Bought some of your ryegrass and over seeded my front yard 11 days ago. Very impressed with how it’s growing so far! Going to get out this weekend and give it its first mow!!
Iv'e been using the Scott's seeding soil as a top dressing with fantastic results! Also just bought the Scott's reel mower for the first mow completed it yesterday, perfect weather this past week and this week for us to renovate and grow the grass before turning off hot again for the weekend!
I followed your renovation video and got WAY better results than any previous attempts. I am at about 10 days and have grass up in most areas. We got some heavy rain a couple of days in and I am on a hill so i definitely have some wash out. I used peat moss on all of my lawn and ran out without covering about 150sqft. I decided to leave it and see the difference and it was major. I am in direct sunlight all day and you could tell easily where the peat moss was and wasn't. I ended up covering it a week in and now it is coming in.
Overseeding is not for the faint of heart! My KBG overseed is two weeks back and I’m dying to cut but going to wait another week. Looking good there. It all pays off in the fall.👍
Wow, manual reel mower!!! I mowed my parents lawn with one of those when I was 8 years old (1960 !!!). Dandelions we used a tool to pull out (still use one today). Crabgrass wasn't too much of a a problem, amazingly. Watered occasionally (not really enough). Over seeded in the fall with KBG blended with clover. I did that a couple years ago on my own lawn and everyone (who would talk to me) went "YUK, LOOK AT ALL OF THOSE WEEDS". A lawn service guy came by when I was outside and told me, in a very proud and expressive tone, that he could get rid of that clover for me. He just about died when I told him I planted it there on purpose. It's pretty much gone now thanks to weed and feed fertilizer. If I was your neighbor I could imagine myself getting my nose punched in. Great videos, keep rolling them out.
Ryan I was just talking about this,I overseed and just did my first mow after 7 days. Rye is awesome. Its just getting thicker as days go by. Great vid as always.
Looks good. You provide a lot of inspiration for my upcoming back yard renovation. I let my back yard go for a couple years. Kids and dogs. But I am starting the renovation in a couple weeks. Gonna spray tenacity to kill all my crabgrass which has overrun a lot of it. Aerate and thatch. Overseed with Perennial Ryegrass and some starter fertilizer. And hope a pray it works.
Day 7 of my backyard renovation. Day 5 , I was wondering what i got myself into. On day 6, I could swear i saw little green specks everywhere like a haze. Day 7 we have Ignition a bunch of grass swords everywhere. I hope day 8 looks as good as yours. P.S. I kept going back to your renovation videos to coach myself through the renovation .

Fun going through a renovation with you. My front and back I put your fescue in 8 days ago and getting nice results without topdressing. Sprinkler issues in the back which are getting addressed tomorrow and have to fix some problem areas there because of that.

Just seeded over 20,000 sq. ft. of your blue/rye mix over Labor Day weekend. Some spots bare topsoil, some overseeded on existing grass. The rye came up super quick on the existing grass even without irrigation. I think I saw the first few blades on day 5. I have temporary irrigation on the bare spots and those just started popping up yesterday which was day 8. Then today we got 0.7 in. of rain in about 45 minutes. The little blades are all laying down and some are partially buried. I'm worried that the bluegrass seed got washed away from those spots. I had put pennington slopemaster down a few days ago and a surprising amount of it is still there, but it's mostly bare dirt again. I'll see how it goes in the next couple weeks while waiting for the bluegrass to kick in. Luckily it can't go far because the bare topsoil spots are all sloping down to existing grass.
I am in Easter Iowa, and we have not gotten any rain all in the few weeks. It is very difficult to keep up with my work and coaching schedule. But we will see. I will probably lay down more seed later in the month or early Oct. Hopefully rain will be in our forcast then.
That’s funny I did a full lawn renovation and now I’m going through the same thing. I just seeded 7 days ago and the city decided to come in and install underground fiber internet. Now they’re working on my front yard and installing an underground box. Really Irritating but they did reimburse me for the seed.
Hey man quick question. I just layed sod last week and did my first mow with a standard mower. I purchased the toro greensmaster 1600 and have it. I’m wondering how soon or how late should I run that on new sod?
I did tall fescue roughly 2 weeks ago, when the temperature settled at about 85 during the day. Germination usually takes about 4 days for me. I let the sprinklers do their thing 2 times a day, morning and evening. During Germination, I go out a few extra times an give it a light spray to keep the top layer from drying.
I have a huge brown area in my lawn. I have no idea what’s happened. The grass in the area which I’m referring to is dead. Grass comes right out. Not sure what to do.
Hey Ryan, I did a small patch in my yard where I did a complete 2-in sand cap It's only about 60 square feet so it should be easy to maintain. I have noticed a few spots where this seems like it's having a hard time germinating I noticed you covered yours with peat moss but after listening to you an RD on the podcast I was nervous about putting the fine organic material that is peat moss over the sand is that fine to do?
Did you do anything about the worm mounds before or after overseeding? I had the same issue and didn't do anything about them and now my mower bounces all over the place when I mow the area.
when the Medicom people decided to bury their cable here they didnt do much damage, only thing is when they filled the holes in they put the top soil went in the hole first and the clay on top
Brought your ryegrass, and did a complete reno of the front left yard. the grass is growing fast. I did make a mistake on my water on how far I thought it was reaching. I didn't get to part of my edges, so I must work on it. I figure after the first mow. People's reaction when they see my lawn now is crazy they are actually stopping in the street to compliment me on how good it looks. I'd say nothing, it's going to die in winter anyways if you are cool season... Then hit it with pre-emergent in the spring. Next time you seed you can either get starter fert (Scotts) that contains mesotrione or alternatively spray liquid form after seeding.
Excellent video, as always.. I live in a suburb of Detroit, MI, and i want to over seed my yard. I put down brand new sod (KBG) in my backyard, which is full sun all day. I'm wondering if I should over seed with some perennial rye in order to get a good mix. My front yard is already a mix, so I intend to over seed that as well. Any advice on which seed I should use? TIA, and keep up the great content.
Would you recommend a full yard of Rye grass in NE SD? I over seeded my yard last year with Kentucky blue, and this summer it looked terrible! Dead spots all over. I want to over seed again next spring, level my lawn ect. But I would rather use topsoil than sand and want a nice green yard, that I can mow once or twice a week....help a brother out....
Ryan they will probably bore it in. You should be good except for the hole where they start the bore and or spot digging your electric, gas, and water lines.
My grass seems fine except the guys that cut down my palm trees made big dents, I bought a grass rake watched a couple of your videos gonna give it a shot 😂
If they have to run that wire under your driveway that is gonna cause some major damage......The machine that lays that under ground is efficient, but i'd be worried about hitting sprinkler lines......such a bummer....
contractors are the best and the worst; i had some idiot put bare cable into the dirt that is next to sprinklers that can get dug around so what do people do? cut the cord; literally; make sure they put insulation conduit and bury it deep enough or the grass wont even grow well enough its like putting a surface root in a straight line that makes any grass have shallow roots

I'd say nothing, it's going to die in winter anyways if you are cool season... Then hit it with pre-emergent in the spring. Next time you seed you can either get starter fert (Scotts) that contains mesotrione or alternatively spray liquid form after seeding.
Impressive.
What is the outdoor temperature when you overseed your lawn with ryegrass?
Highs around 70
Great tips as always bro!
OH, the brand new sod was put down on May 15th...
No need to really add in rye as blue continues to get thicker and thicker with time
@@ryanknorrlawncare OK, TY
Would you recommend a full yard of Rye grass in NE SD? I over seeded my yard last year with Kentucky blue, and this summer it looked terrible! Dead spots all over. I want to over seed again next spring, level my lawn ect. But I would rather use topsoil than sand and want a nice green yard, that I can mow once or twice a week....help a brother out....
Probably tall fescue for most yards these days since it takes the heat better
Why didnt you use the lanzie?
rye for me ends up being bright neon green compared to everything else I've used and the rye refuses to get dark green
You need an elite variety
Ryan they will probably bore it in. You should be good except for the hole where they start the bore and or spot digging your electric, gas, and water lines.
I could be wrong but trenching mainline through the suburbs is super time consuming.
It’s all about the mows!
Nice job! I’m on day 6 after aerating and day 5 after overseeding. I’m excited to see the results soon!
My grass seems fine except the guys that cut down my palm trees made big dents, I bought a grass rake watched a couple of your videos gonna give it a shot 😂
Ryan, you've got to be kidding me with the Medicom cable! Running a cable down the sidewalk for a full block or so? I hate Medicom with a passion!
Looking great
They are going to bury a cable in your front yard and not in the easement?
I bet alot of people drive by and say to themselves “crazy grass guy at it again”…. I’d be stopping to chat….
The street is a dead end so that doesn't happen much
@@ryanknorrlawncare not many Looky Lou's!
Took my internet company 6 months to burry my new cable in my yard! Had to move it to cut the grass.
If they have to run that wire under your driveway that is gonna cause some major damage......The machine that lays that under ground is efficient, but i'd be worried about hitting sprinkler lines......such a bummer....
Is it possible to grow rye in so cal to the height I grow my tttf? 7 inches or no? Lol
What manual reel mower do you use. Doing overseed this fall with rye in Memphis area
Earthwise 7 blade
Looks awesome
For a pro like you, I would think that burying the wire would be a tiny blip on the radar.
I do not get it... you have put the seed on the sand... I have done it too, not even one seed have germinated. What am I doing wrong :/ I water a lot
Maybe you should've wore a pair of those 'spike lawn shoes' walking across the sand. They're pretty flat underneath.
LoL
What type of grass would you recommend for Northern California area (North of sacramento)
Look at your agricultural zone and you can use that to determine your grass type and go from there
At least you have sand for the winter for the sidewalk.
Just got my Tall Fescue seed I bought from you down 3 days ago. Hoping this goes well.
I'm just here for the fescue
Do you move often? Just curious because you said if your still there after that line is buried….
I've lived here for 10 years
@@ryanknorrlawncare oh ok I thought you guys might move around a lot and lawns was one of the Reno’s
@@rizzotto139 we're moving to a rural property in the somewhat near future
@@ryanknorrlawncare sounds peaceful, wish you guys the best.
Also Thank you for all the videos, they are really educationally god sent!!
They just left a wire across your front yard lol? That would never fly here in NY. Way to many people suing each other over here.
Oh to reseed with ryegrass instead of tall fescue
How oh how do you deal with ants ???! Please tell me because they carry away all my seed.
Is that shirt still available for purchase?
Yep. It's on my website store ryanknorrlawncare.com
Day 28 and this KY Bluegrass is trying my last nerve. No help from the weather Gods doesn't help (3 times in 28 days and 10-12 days over 90). :(
Where's that Ward fella?
contractors are the best and the worst; i had some idiot put bare cable into the dirt that is next to sprinklers that can get dug around so what do people do? cut the cord; literally; make sure they put insulation conduit and bury it deep enough or the grass wont even grow well enough
its like putting a surface root in a straight line that makes any grass have shallow roots
