    Pete, do you cut your tall fescue low before aeration and seeding? I have tall fescue as well, however a lot of other RUclipsrs say to cut your grass low before aerating/ seeding. In the past all I ever did was aerate and seed and kept it moving.." lol

      kenny Tee I was going to ask the same question too! In the past, I had been told to cut short and bag it before aeration and seeding.

      I will take it down to about 3'-3.5' before I aerate and seed

      @@GCITurf do you mow as usual during the overseed and aeration process or do you let it get a little tall until the new seedlings are established?

  • @tomr9509
    @tomr9509 6 лет назад +6

    The best thing that I found to cover grass seed in bare spots to large areas is grass clippings.It covers nice,holds moisture,and breaks down and feeds the new grass.

      Unlike straw you know whats in it.The trick is you have to use fresh clippings and put it down right away other wise they start composting and won't spread nice.

    I'm doing my own renovation this year in order to get rid of the Bermuda in my yard. I've heard you say you don't like straw due to the unknown, and I agree. So what's your suggestion on how to get good soil to seed contact? I don't have access to an area-vator and I have a garden weasel but doing a large area is cumbersome. Any other suggestions? Thanks! For that lawnin the video that you core aerated, I think the grass is already thick enough. So if you fertilize properly,that in itself will promote new growth. So why hit it with any new seed at all, even 2 lbs. is asking for trouble. Some of the problem with grass is it doesn't know when to stop multiplying. And I feel that defines your grass example.

    Good video Pete. Spread that knowledge brotha. I do have one question. When you have very well established turf like ours, what's the best way to get the seed DOWN to the soil for good contact? Water in?

    • @GCITurf
      @GCITurf  7 лет назад +1

      Michael Wassenaar hope and pray 1 seed falls in each of the plug holes in the yard. Or a real hard rain to beat it in to the ground

    Any experience with the homeowner pluggers that pull behind a mower that you add weights too. My neighbor has one and will let me borrow it as needed. I believe the tines are farther apart so many passes would need to be made to get the quantity. Also not sure yet how deep of a core these types can pull.

    • @GCITurf
      @GCITurf  7 лет назад

      Jeremy Glastetter no experience with them but, I don't see where it wouldn't work. Just ride over your lawn several times to get more holes. I think you're fine

    • @ousamaabdu794
      @ousamaabdu794 7 лет назад +1

      Do you know what brand the of aerator your neighbor has? I have a commercial Classen aerator and a John Deere tow behind aerator. The commercial aerator will get the plugs a little deeper and is better in tight areas. With the tow behind aerator the plugs are usually 1.5 to 2.25 in depending on soil conditions and also the way the turf was graded. With the Classen 2.5 to 3 in. However with the tow behind aerator the job is much easier because the tractor does all of the work, so it is no issue doing 2 to 3 passes. And it is minimum $70 to rent an aerator. If you can use your neighbors aerator think you will be fine.

    • @PreciseAssemblies
      @PreciseAssemblies 7 лет назад

      Ousama Abdu The label on it says it's a Brinkly brand, Pro 150 series. The tines look to be half circles and are 6 inches apart, 30 inches across. Says a max of 150lbs. on the weight tray.

    • @ousamaabdu794
      @ousamaabdu794 7 лет назад +1

      I just saw the Brinkley aerator online. Looks to be decent quality. Most cinder blocks weigh around 35 lbs, so you can fit four on there. I think it will do the trick. Since you have anytime use of the aerator, try it out first and see how you like it. Do 2 to 3 passes, measure the cores and let us know how deep they were in inches. If the ground is somewhat moist there plugs will be deeper, and is the yard is on a decent grade that will also help for deeper cores. You can always rent an aerator afterwards if the tow behind aerator did not suit what your expectations were, as aerating the yard 2x times is only beneficial for the lawn. So absolutely no drawbacks to use the tow behind aerator .

The blend is Davinci Tall Fescue, van Go Gh Tall Fescue, Monet Tall Fescue, and Leonardo Tall Fescue. Not sure if you ever heard of these different type of fescues, I know there's a million kind. • @termides
    @termides 5 лет назад

    You absolutely nailed it pulls up plugs, and your seed falls into those holes and like tall fescue always does it grows up in ugly clumps. It's not a spreading grass. Unfortunate to live in the transition zone and I do also.

  • @zerocool212121
    @zerocool212121 7 лет назад +1

    id disagree on as a must have being seeded every year, a healthy lawn with constantly fill in any bare areas, only time thats its a must seed is when your having problem areas or are trying to smother out other grasses, imo.
    for turf type tall fescue have you used rtf tttf? its the only one i know of that has a patent on it for its rhizomes. i havent seen it long term to see how much of a difference it makes but might be worth looking into?

    • @GCITurf
      @GCITurf  7 лет назад

      zerocool212121 never used any rtf. Don't plan to. I've seen it in several lawns and it does not spread
      Not sure what "grass" you're trying to smother out by overseeding ??? But around here you'd be dealing with Bermuda and fescue will not choke out Bermuda. Sorry
      The reason we overseed a perfectly healthy lawn when we aerate is to make it even healthier by adding stronger cultivars.

    • @zerocool212121
      @zerocool212121 7 лет назад +1

      yes we have different types of grasses, here its mostly kbg, fescue, rye, orchard, poa anua/tri ,sometimes (rarely) find a creeper and what ever blows in from surrounding areas.
      the point i was trying to make on seeding every year is at some point it wont be doing much as there will be an equilibrium, yes when it first starts out it will be super thick but then it will die back to its natural equilibrium as there isnt any more resources for it to use, the amount of par,water,food being the main focus.
      are you saying you switch seeds every year to bring in new genetics but the same type of grass or just the same one every year?
      those tools are great for reseeding, boosting up the germination rate. thanks for the reply

    • @GCITurf
      @GCITurf  7 лет назад

      zerocool212121 yes. We overseed fescue with fescue.
      The equilibrium here is the sun and lack of irrigation making aeration and seeding a part of basic lawn care. You must deal with cooler temps.
      What's your company website so I can check out your work?

    • @zerocool212121
      @zerocool212121 7 лет назад +1

      no i dont have a website im just a solo guy all by word of mouth. i dont have near the same amount of equipment that you have. i did think about getting one of those aeravators but decided on just a ride on. have you tried the ryans/classen anything you like more or less than the ones you have?
      yes i have to deal with much cooler temps, we actually just had another light snow in the mountains already and it seems like an early year. it not uncommon to have snow here in 5-6 weeks. its been in the 90s still but it can easily drop 40/50 deg if a cold front moves in.
      what i was asking is if you change who makes the seed so even though its all fescue your bring in new cultivars to allow for a better genetic diversity and let the dominate one take over.
      i wish we had more people like you and your other buddy on here out here because there seems to be a lot of ill informed people that dont know in depth about all of this. i was just browsing facebook and saw a friend share another company that starts aerating at $20 and fert $20. that frustrating seeing these guys kill the market with shit work, but in the end they usually call you to fix or redo what they didnt get.

    • @GCITurf
      @GCITurf  7 лет назад +1

      zerocool212121 all I have is the 3 aeravators and 2 z plugs. Also 1 exmark stand on plugger. Billy goat reciprocating. 2 Ryan drum walk behinds. I haven't tried anything else.
      Yes we add new varieties when seeding to improve the turf overall
      Hope this helps

    I've heard that core aeration is hotly debated among lawn veterans because it creates risk of dredging up viable weed seeds that will then germinate. Perhaps it is more of a northern problem, as the online communities I frequent fear that core aeration will lead to massive Poa Annua/etc. infestations. Thoughts?

      you are supposed to seed immediately after aerating

  • @djbold9844

    Dang.. I just hired a guy that aerated and put down kentucky 31 fescue.. I kept asking what seeds he was going to use but he kept saying only the best kind of seed....yea okay for your wallet . I guess ill just over seed the kentucky 31 once it sprouts with better turf type fescue in spring...

    • @GCITurf
      @GCITurf  7 лет назад +1

    • @GCITurf
      @GCITurf  6 лет назад

      Absolutely. But it would take a alot of work on your part and would be rather expensive with 5 acres. Would it be worth it to treat just 1 acre right around the house? Or would that look too funny?
