  • Wireless premium VR is finally a reality, thanks to a collaboration between HTC, Intel, and DisplayLink, creating the new HTC Vive Wireless Adapter. This wireless adapter works for either the regular HTC Vive or the HTC Vive Pro, and provides a way to ditch that cord tethering you to the computer by utilizing a custom-built Intel WiGig PCI-e card. Does this suffer from the usual wireless problems of added latency and reduced image quality? Find out in our review!

@David Ekstrom It isn't the gpu that's the problem... He said there was stuttering, that obviously comes from the old cpu which is a bottleneck in the system. He shouldn't complain about stuttering when it is his fault for having an old system (the gpu is perfectly fine, because I have to point that out now)

Mine arrived today. I'm waiting for the battery to charge. Setup was a breeze, even with the additional stuff for my Vive Pro. I should be good one the performance aspect, 4790k and 1080ti. I ordered a 30k mAh battery pack. But I'm going to make sure the output is right. It supports QC 3.0, so I'm guessing it's right, but we'll see. It was $60 for 3x the capacity of the included pack, albeit without the belt clip. But I have a 3d printer and a hobby of designing functional things like that, so I'll manage. If this battery really works, I might pick up a few of them so that I can theoretically have uninterrupted wireless playing with a hot swap every few hours.
Update: just spent about an hour in Skyrim VR with no wires. It’s amazing how much more immersive it is when you don’t have to stop to unwind yourself. The cable actually made me a more passive player. Planted feet, poor posture that caused fatigue to set in more quickly. All that’s gone, now I can just keep moving and I no longer need to use the button rotate feature. In fact, the only thing that was breaking my immersion was realizing that nothing was breaking my immersion.

Tyriel Woods mentioned that you can not hot swap the batteries I think, he was told you have to get out of game and reboot steam.
"In fact, the only thing that was breaking my immersion was realizing that nothing was breaking my immersion."
Well besides walking into your wall now ;) . I am jelly, I will admit, I have a 1080 ti with a Pro as well but this is so pricey and the only thing holding me back is not being able to hot swap to a wired version again for seated games and movies.

    • @androidheadlines
      @androidheadlines  6 лет назад +9

There's no battery on the wireless adapter itself, so you are correct, they are not hot-swappable. It only takes a few seconds to boot back up after turning the battery back on though, so it's not far off.

    • @neobaggins3718
      @neobaggins3718 6 лет назад +6

HybridEnergy This is incorrect. I just swapped back and forth between the included pack and my new 3k mAh pack and all that is required is hitting the button on the wireless adapter. Neither the game nor SteamVR are affected by this, just like if you disconnected with the 3in1, you just plug it back in and unpause. From my testing, a hot swap takes about 10-15 seconds and I didn't take off my hmd, just did it by feel. Takes about 5 seconds for the adapter to reconnect after you hit the button on it.

Whilst it's often associated with wireless things, the fact that something is wireless has only very little to no bearing on latency.
It's more to do with buffering, encoding/decoding and processing latency at each end of the connection.
By dedicating the WiGig to a single point to point connection and mandating a minimal range, little compression / encoding is required.
It's not uncommon for companies to cheap out and use weak encoding and/or inadequate transmission system.
Looks like HTC spared no expense on this, and the result looks good.
Re the power, looks like an ordinary power bank, might be easy to grab a few and keep one or 2 spares on charge.

Ended up buying a used alienware 17 off the FB marketplace with a 1070 in it for $900 (The seller made my life hell just to get the damn thing). Then found a deal on Facebook marketplace for a never used/worn once or twice oculous rift for $150 (rich people who didn't know how to work it). Sold my old alienware with a 970 to a friend for $750 and was able to cheaply get into VR. Now I am debating whether I should get this, because I was able to upgrade everything for the same price as it would be to buy this. I think my next step is going to be upgrading the Oculus to an HTC Vive since the Alienware has only 2 USB 3.0 ports(LOTS of other ports including USB-C though) and the Oculus requires 3 which I was able to buy a USB hub for, but the setup requires many extra steps now. The Vive only requires 1 USB 2.0 or 3.0 port though so I may just end up getting that. If any of of you get VR, Beat saber is my number 1 buy and if you like FPS shooters get Pavlov which is my personal number 2. This is a pointless caffeine fueled rant about my personal VR win and struggles and if you need help setting up your oculus due to the sensor not picking up your controllers, PM/reply to me for that information.

It seems very solid for a gen 1.5 solution. There is no doubt that wireless will be the way forward for high-end VR. I'm a cables kind of guy myself typically, but if there's ONE place you don't want that wire it's in VR. The battery limitations also seem less of a burden since VR is pretty demanding and pretty much requires some breaks in between.
I'm still fencesitting a little bit on the high-end VR gear to see what's around the corner. It feels like we are almost there in terms of fidelity, and I suspect that wifi will be standardized and cheaper soon because of it.

Thank you so much for this video; the installation went off without a hitch, other than screwing in the coaxial cable. At first, and for a little while afterwards, I just could NOT get that cable to line up right with the threading on the card; it was only during installation of the software, and the detection of the wireless adapter, that I FINALLY got the cable screwed in all the way, and then the adapter was recognized, and paired. After that, I did some gaming, and it was smooth sailing. Again, I want to thank you for this helpful video.

Just a little note - the battery pack seems to connect via USB type A when using Quick Charge. If that's the case, it can't send data while using Quick Charge, so there's no way to gauge battery usage. It would need to use Type C or a proprietary cable to deliver data as well.

Just a little nitpick the sensor you mentioned is actually an antenna like what you would find on a router. Wi-gi uses the 60Ghz spectrum where typical Wi-Fi uses 2.4 and 5Ghz. If you care to read the spec Wigi is a revision of wifi and is defined in the IEEE 802.11ad document (note wierless ac is 802.11ac where ac is the revision of the 802.11 standard).

  • @Augownage
    @Augownage 5 лет назад +1

I've been using the wireless adapter on my HTC Vive for a couple of
weeks now, and I'd like to share my thoughts on it.
First, the problems. The first problem I encountered was that the
pass-through camera causes the wireless connection to drop after 1-5
minutes with an error message that states "Headset not detected" from
the VIVE Wireless app. Disabling the camera is the only fix. I tried
30hz, 60hz, and in between refresh rates for the camera.
Second problem is the heat. The wireless adapter gets HOT. Log files
indicate over 90 degrees C! This heat transfers down through the deluxe
audio strap and into my head, leaving a red mark on my scalp. I have
ordered gold foil heat reflected tape that will hopefully reduce this
heat. VIVE Pro users won't notice this as much due to the thick pad.
Third problem is that super sampling causes pixelation in complex
scenes. The wireless adapter just doesn't have the processing power to
compress and then decompress the added detail in a super sampled scene.
And before you tell me that the resolution the adapter is working with
is the same - I know. Super sampling still adds additional data, even
though the resolution is the same. It just can't handle it. If you want
to learn more about how the wireless display works, visit DisplayLink's
    website.
Fourth problem is the pathetic battery that HTC includes. The battery
should cost $30 at most for what it is - A basic 10,000mAh QC 3.0
battery bank. You can use any QC 3.0 battery bank to power the wireless
adapter, including 20,000mAh and larger QC 3.0 banks from Anker, that
will last you 5+ hours for the 20,000mAh model.
Fifth problem is the power input for the wireless adapter - It is
located at the read, making it impossible to lay down on the ground
without straining or damaging the power input! VIVE Pro users risk
damaging their display cable as well, as the Pro uses the port on the
rear of the wireless adapter. I have purchased a downward right angle
USB adapter that reduces the risk of damaging the power input
    port/cable.
I do have some good things to say, however. Going wireless adds huge
levels of immersion to games that can take advantage of wireless. I
myself play VRChat with full body tracking, and being wireless adds so
much that I never want to go back to being tethered. There is no
noticeable input lag or delay, and unless signal quality is reduced or
the scene is too complex, image quality is unaffected.
For now, I am suffering from the issues above and I am taking measures
to reduce the impact of the ones that I have control over.
Head over to VIVE's support forums to read all the issues people are having with the wireless adapter before purchasing.

After testing the wireless adapter for 2 days straight I have to say a lot of the reviews are piss poor at warning people at the performance hit they are about to take. There is a massive trade off here due to the intense CPU usage. Problem is the youtube reviewers are using games such as Beat Saber and Skyrim, GPU depended easy to run on any system games. My spec is: i7 7700k, 3200mhz 16gb ram, 1080ti. The performance hit is nearly 50%-80% in super-sampling in many cases and constant stutter in games such as Arizona Sunshine, Killing Floor Incursion, and Fallout 4. Worst yet is anything through REVIVE is unplayable as Revive it-self is CPU intensive. Word of warning here, it's a massive performance hit even on current gen hardware.

Before you throw $300 at a wireless adapter, think about pulleys. I have my cable on 3 small, retractable pulleys. There isn't too much of a pull on the headset, but it clears the cable from being on the ground, and I will say that it is much more manageable suspended in air.

Can confirm. Worst problem I have is the cable twisting up if I am playing a specific Pavlov map where I tend to physically turn in one direction and joystick turn in the other. That being said, the twisting can be managed with 3rd party software that shows a twist-meter thing at your feet to let you know when to spin the other direction a few times (can't remember the name of the software).
Other than that, it's fantastic. I can walk as round my entire room, crouch, sit in my chair, lay down -- doesn't matter; the cable will go with me and immediately retract to the ceiling, staying out of my way at all times.
While I would love wireless VR, a retractable ceiling leash solution is about $20 on Amazon, so...

What if you don't have any additional PCIE slots on your motherboard? Is it possible to get some kind of PCIE to USB adapter of some sort? Where you can plug the wireless adapter into another adapter that then connects to the PC via USB? Would USB 3.0 even be fast enough for this? Any suggestions?

really appreciate showing all the components, I was wondering how the card worked, like whether it required an HDMI input fed from the GPU or if it did everything over PCIE lanes, this was a pending issue for me as I only have 1 HDMI port on my GPU and I HAVE to use that for the TV, now I see that I'm good and cables are not an issue, my room is 15'x15' once I clear the couch and floor lamp out of the way and having my PC in one corner resulted in severe limited range of movement as I am always reaching the extent of the cable.

I bought the Vive Wireless adapter and my system meets the minimum requirements for the wireless adapter but my CPU cannot seem to handle the wireless adapter. Wired, my system can handle VR games on high settings. The wireless on the other hand is a massive CPU hog. I have an intel I5 6600K and i have not tried overclocking yet. But when I try using the wireless, it isn't awful, and it does run. the issue is that there is noticeable delay between moving my hands and it showing in the headset. There is also noticeable pixelization, and the resolution changes quite a bit. It seems that people with higher end CPU's seem to have the same issues though.
