What a great conversation Brad, so many things to consider when setting up a capable rig and of course there are always compromises. Thanks for sharing, what an awesome adventure.
Thank you both for sharing your opinions on all these topics. Since I'm going to 37's soon on my jkur from 35's, I really zeroed in on the topics of body lift and 44 axles vs 60's. I really don't want a crazy tall "car" (ha) and like this idea alot. As always, great video Brad, and I hope you two can collaborate more in the future.

Looks like fun, spent some time up in Alaska for gaurds, beautiful place, love to get back up there only with the Jeep and of course the family. Happy trails!✌️

Love your channel.. I've been binge watching even tho and a toyota guy lol:(.. Be safe out there.. God bless.
Great conversation, Brad. Your discussion reminds me of all the great conversations I continuously have with all my AEV buddies on our adventures throughout the years. Quite simply a well-defined interpretation of life on the trail. Good Times!
Brad, I hate mud too. I would much rather have Northern Colorado or even SMORR. Moab was good, but I am still cleaning red dirt from my jeep and Moab was over a year ago.
I used to think I would never own a Jeep with an automatic transmission... Then I spent the first six years I had a drivers listens driving standards on and off road, after doing so I won’t go so far as to say I will never own a standard again but for a daily driver I have no desire to have a standard and for off-road I’m about 50-50, could go either way.
Really fun video Brad with some great views on likes/dislikes! Sorry, but my beer came out my nose when you got hit in the face with that bush! That has happened to me several times when I have my half doors on and yes, my wife laughs every time!
Its great that you've got these brand new $$$ Wranglers and Gladiators. Congrats, you are fortunate. However, the main reason I, and I would think, many others, like your videos is that you WERE a regular guy with regular rigs that reviewed and built up your rigs like you weren't sponsored by suppliers. That was the best part of your vids. It now seems like your favorite parts have been replaced by your "favorite" (sponsored) parts. I congratulate you on your success, but you've lost the spark that made your vids valuable. Now it's just advertising, like so many others.
Geoff Manning you make a great point. Brad and I often talk about parts of all kinds and one thing he says, “if I don’t like a part, I won’t run it.” Get ready for a few videos about much older 4x4’s you won’t be disappointed!
That new vs old question can be answered for most with a fat check... It's called "restomod" build. Personally, I'd do a CJ-8 w/a hardtop build, with TJ Rubicon suspension/axles with a Gen 5 GM motor with a 8 speed auto. Tummy tucked. 35" tires.
Hey Brad quick question... I know you put KC lights on the front of your wife’s Jeep. I just put the very same lights on the front of my gladiator. But the light is touching the tow hooks. Did you have the same problem? And if so how did you fix it?
All-Terrains vs Mud-Terrains, living in SoCal or the desert, mud tires are great, but try to daily drive a short wheel base vehicle on packed ice in a winter environment, like Idaho and traction is almost non-existent!
Ryan: JK is a car because it has power windows, power door locks, tilt wheel, cruise control... Also Ryan: At the beginning of the JL and JT platform they became “Jeeps again” LMAO! Ok guy....
Michael Gutkowski fair enough. Really what happens it the JL platform redeemed itself by building a better chassis, better fuel management, better axles, and better transmissions. Those creature comforts are hear to stay but are definitely more Cherokee car like. The JL and JT became worthy of the Jeep Marque again.
Dustin Juell we were lucky enough to be invited on the UA by Smittybilt. My team built the Jeep from spare parts and Smittybilt fitted the bill. Thanks for asking.
Just subscribed love the videos, i was gonna ask you what trail should i go to for a day, my Causin and i are beginners but have rubicons. We wanna spend the day out at a nice scenic drive for the day. What trail would you recommend?
Good videos Brad. Your videos are crisp. What camera and audio you use? Also, How do you get videos of your cars in trails. Do you have a leading car, trailing car that has dedicated videographer?
So...JK's are "cars" because they have "power windows, power door locks, tilt wheel, cruise control" ...but the JL's and Gladiators are "Jeeps" again? What an asinine comment. Have you seen the creature comforts in the JL and Gladiator? They blow the JK out of the water. Btw, you were in a JL during this trip, but Brad says that you also call it a car, despite your notion that JL's are Jeeps again. So which is it?
glazener24 the JK platform was a real disappointment when it came out. I realize we are stuck with those creature comforts now. The JL is so far superior to the jk that’s it’s worthy of the Jeep name. Would I like to see a JL with less electronics? Absolutely! Both our gladiator and our JL has left us stranded when the small computer battery died. Remember. When I started driving Jeeps they were one step above tractors.
@@AustinH7 That's my point exactly! By that logic they should completely despise the JL, because we all know people hated the JK for being more techy than the TJ
If I ever get to the point that I wheel hard enough to consider upgrading the JK to 60 axles, i think I'll try welding on a truss/reinforcement kit and putting on RCV axles in the front and a good set of chromoly's in the rear. For me the extra weight, decreased ground clearance, reduced gas mileage, and not to mention how damn expensive 60's are, they seem really hard to justify, and are probably overkill for most Jeepers. just my $.02 though.
i currently have a 2door rubicon and yes i love it but for deep country long term overland build the 2005+ Xterra and the automatic is strong selling point. i think its that the majority of overland trailers are garbarge 1000lbs+ or 12k$ + which make them usleess to me in in a 2 door. yes i am actively working on a sub10k sub 1000lbs trailer that is competative to the turtle back and patriot campers trailer. tl;dr yes automatics come with better overlanders but less rock crawlers though with proper torque converter knowledge an auto is great crawling.
I've had both auto's and Stick shift. IMOP the uto out performs and stick. Even more evidence of the superior ability is if you have a re-geared or 3 speed t case now you can climb with the lowest gear and go thru gears without shifting issues. Sorry my opinion.
How does he call a JK a "car" and then list the reasons "it had power windows, power door locks, tilt wheel, cruise control...". And then say the JL is really where they brought it back to a Jeep? Yeah with all the same things the JK has plus push button start, auto on/off, 8 spread trans where the shifter is really electronic not mechanical, power soft top, adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance...
M and T 3D all good points. The evolution of the Jeep is what it is. The LJ was the greatest Jeep ever made then they discontinued it for the JK. Imagine our disappointment. 11 years later Jeep redeems itself with a platform worthy of the name Jeep. I did call it a Car all week and will continue to reference it as a Car with its luxurious interior. Lol great comment!
I was thinking the same thing. I have a CJ, TJ, and a JK and I agree, the JK is more car like, and the JL seems more so. I love my TJ and if all goes but one it will be my keeper, but I do enjoy the jk as a daily..
drtstar1 I agree with you. I just thought it was funny the reasoning the JK wasn't considered a "Jeep" and the LJ is. I personally own a YJ, TJ, Jk, JKU, and an JL and I love them all. But I do say all the time that the JK and JL are just so fancy that they don't feel like Jeeps! So I do agree with you. I just thought it was funny.
So after this trip and doing the wheeling that you were doing could you say that successfully running 40's on 44 axles like the ones you were running or say the pro rock 44's is something that is more achievable nowadays on the JL then in the past? Or are D 60's still the way to go if you plan on doing the more vertical slow crawling up rock faces that people do in say Colorado, Utah, and Nevada? I only ask because seeing some of the clips from this trip, you and Ryan were really pushing that rig and I was shocked to know that he only chose to go with 44 axles.
davis diethrich yes, without a doubt I’d use Core44’s in Moab. They are really strong and crawl all the trails like Pritchett canyon, metal masher, hell’s gate, escalator, potato salad hill with ease. Modern metal and bigger bearings has reduced the breakage to a minimum. Had I changed the u joint on the trail the axle would have survived.
@@drtstar1 Thats great to hear for those of us who really want to run 40's but might not have the budget to go up to 60's. When will the Core44's be coming out for the JL?
davis diethrich very soon. The front is in MFG and the rear is in the testing phase. The front JL knuckle will accept a U joint bigger than a Dana 60 so this should extend the life of the axles against standard rock crawling. The core44 recycles the outer knuckles, and brakes to keep the cost down. You can fit any popular locker that a reviving housing will take and G2 will sell it completely set up so all you need to do is R&R the front loaded axle in your driveway. (About 4 hours)
Cole Orton well to start. The chassis is all wrong. The transmissions suck, the engines are prone to blow up, the axles bend, the the steering geometry stock has bumpsteer, it’s too heavy, it’s too wide, the tires rub on everything, the plastic dash falls apart, the abs ESP system is 20 years behind the technology... I’ve got more if you’d like me to keep going. Technology the vehicle was outdated before it launched and Chrysler new it. The LJ platform was supposed to run a few more years before insurance safety institute outlawed rear gas tanks and the tall inline 6. This meant the TJ and LJ were doomed. Jeep design team were stealing systems from other platforms to meet insurance safety standards for the 07 launch. That’s why they had the major rework in 2012.

The new automatics can tow more, as far as I know (stock).
So did he do a body lift vs putting in bump stop extensions?
Cruz Salazar you got it. The bump stops are to keep the larger tires from smashing into the fenders. So delete the bumps tops and add a body lift.
Damn that’s pretty smart! I never thought bout that... plus the Jeep will appear taller too ! So it’s a win win
