- After installing larger tires, a lift kit and adding several heavy accessories to my Jeep Gladiator, I began to notice a reduction in performance. I elected to swap out the ring and pinon gears to see if I could get some of that performance back. In the process I wanted to do a test to see how it would affect my gas mileage. We tried to be as fare as possible in our pre and post gas mileage test, but because this is real world, there are several factors that can affect the results. #jeepgladiator #mpgtest #gasmileage

It wasn't mentioned in the video, but yes I did recalibrate my speedometer to compensate for both the tire size and gear ratio. As for why I chose 5:13's, I think 4.88 is a good ratio to go with for a 38" tire, but because I carry extra gear and plan on doing some off-road towing I wanted to go slightly deeper, and that's why I chose 5:13'. Sorry for not explaining that in the video.
TrailRecon I am concerned if the slight increased rpm (4:88) will move it up the horsepower curve enough to still pull 8th gear at interstate speed (75 mph). I realize I am on the verge of asking to much. You did confirm you see 8th a lot more with gear swap.

The MPG gain wasn’t super impressive, however the increase in MPG PLUS the extra low end power is a win IMO.
Wow, gentlemen, I am so impressed that i subscribed, I`m an old disabled mechanics and over the years explained or at least tried with some guys to explain what happens with bigger tires and gearing, and then of course, braking and shocks, so many other sites just add tires and never explain the changes in bottom end performance versus top end and real-life changes. Well done!

Great Job Brad! I do a lot of gears for people and explaining what you have found in this video people don’t believe me. Not only do you pick up a little mileage but it’s so much more fun to drive a properly geared 4x4 on or off road.

Had a 26' Penske loaded and towing my CJ7 on a trailer. The truck's rear tire developed a bad vibration over 50 so I had to drive from LA to OKC doing 50. I got 8 mpg before the vibration and 16 mpg after. Lesson learned about pushing air.
I’d be celebrating 1 MPG at those prices! Crazy!!
I choose the "ignorance is bliss" method of calculating my jeeps mileage. Turned off the mpg thing on the dash, it was just too damn depressing. Still won't drive anything else though!

Was cool seeing my old stomping grounds. The tower ( really the caves) holds a special memory for my wife and I. Oh, and holy crap, I cant believe 87 is $4.03!!!! I am reminded of one of the reasons I fled CA.
Hey brad. Having had both 4.88 and 5.13 gears, which would you recommend for a daily driver? Is there that much of a difference? How do they compare on the interstate?
Wow, I called it at 17.2mpg! On my 96 Chevy, 350 AT, 35" BFG's and 6" lift I went 3.73 to 4.56 gears and went from 17mpg to 18mpg on the highway. But City went from 13 to 15 because the lower gears made it easier on the engine to get to speed. Gears will help your engine and mileage, it may just take a few years of driving to make up the $2,000 price of them. Great study!
I'd be willing to bet that the lights and the roof top tent are each worth another 1 to 1 1/2 MPG . Bringing you up to that elusive 20 MPG!

The 8 speed changes everything.
I'm thinking about going 5.13's on my JLUR also on 37's. I would love the low end punch, going from 4.10 to 4.88 just doesn't seem like it would be worth it.

Great video with some good conversation about all the things that can go into ruining or increasing your gas mileage. I think people don't realize how big a difference regearing can make when you jump more than a couple inches in tire size from factory. One of the first things I do to my vehicles now that get more than a small bump in tire height.
Good stuff Brad. It's going to be very interesting to see how a comparably equipped diesel version will do if Jeep ever makes it happen.

Love your Gladiator build! Impressed with the MPGs you are getting. I’m getting around 17 on the Highway in my JK. But average around 15 on all around driving including Overlanding trips.
The question will be,"will the mpg on the diesel make up for the increase in cost per gallon?"
Of course the diesel engine will outlast a gasoline engine by a long shot and have better overall performance and for those reasons I would go diesel every time.
My question is how will it take to recoup the additional cost of the diesel engine? Obviously, the cost per gallon is the big factor but how many gallons? There has to be a math whiz out there who can figure that out for us Liberal Arts majors.😀
I've owned 7 Jeeps, all just minimally powered. The diesel is a $4000 option on the Wrangler and diesel cost .40 more than gas. For my personal satisfaction and driving pleasure I will pay the extra cost regardless. Life is short and you can't take it with you.
I just put gears in my Jeep by fearless gears in Fresno Ca!! I’m running 33’s but going to run 35’s. Just deleted the front fenders and put on a few things. Next is a winch and a rear part time locker. I believe I’ll have my Jeep tj 4.0 ready!!! I’m pumped

Great to see some home turf every now and then! I never knew about the truck museum, but now I’ll have to check that out.
There's a fine line between making a RUclips channel successful and selling out. Where does one draw that line and find that balance? Started from scratch and as a channel grows the more sponsors it attracts. The more sponsors one gets, the more it starts to look like an infomercial, biased and unorganic. Then along comes the haters and trolls. How does one know where to draw the line before their channel gets too big to the point where the content becomes unrelatable to the average Jeeper?
What a shock to me that you improved your gas mileage! Back in 1969 I had a Z28 Camaro and put 538's in it. Gas mileage went way south! Made the mistake of driving it from Okla to Indianapolis once. Gas was like 32 cents but I was only making 2 bucks an hour. It got to 60 really quickly though! :)) I know the situations are different and tech is different, etc etc, but I was still surprised at your gas mileage improvement.
Wow, I've never seen over $4 per gallon before, heard about it but never on a gas pump. Paid $2.39 today.

Prescott Lederer also want to know as 4:88 puts it closer the factory ratio.
I think 4.88 is a good ratio to go with for 38's, but because I carry a lot of gear and I will be doing some off-road towing I wanted to with a slightly deeper gear, so that's why I chose 5:13's. Sorry for not explaining that in the video.

I seldom get my JT in 8th gear, and I’m on stock 4.10 and stock 33’s
I get about 18 mpg around town and close to 21 freeway..
I’m from California and still travel there quite a bit..
I freak out over the price of gas, and many other “California” issues..
$2.66 in Colorado for 87..
We have been as low as $1.89 for 85..

In 01 I bought a new gutless 1500 ram 4x4 with a 360 magnum engine. 3.55 gears got 11 mpg max. Tranny blew at 20k, factory reman.Put 33” tires on and got 9 mpg and more gutless. Blew the tranny at 40k. Put 4.10 gears in with a hand built tranny and got 12 mpg, more if it was unloaded and I milked it. Even when it was all stock, it struggled to stay in 4th gear. The 4.10 gears were way better and the transmission lasted another 200k when I sold it for scrap because I live in Michigan and the salt ate it up. I did sell the transmission to a friend of mine who put it in his plow truck and ran it for another few years. I still should’ve went with 4.56 gears though. Those 360 magnums were worthless!!!
Wow that’s pretty good gas mileage for your truck. I only get 10.5 mpg in my CJ5 with an AMC 401 V8 with 33s. But she sure is fun to drive around and sounds awesome 😎

The next time you are in a gas station, look at the nozzle on the hose, you will see a 1/4 inch tube in there, because of CA emmissions, that tube is designed to suck the gas back out to keep it from going into the atmosphere or on the ground. Every time you click the handle after the auto shut off you are putting gas back into the ground tanks of the station

Thanks for posting this; an interesting topic and nice adjunct to most off-road videos. Whilst your discussion centered around Wrangler and Gladiator, re-gearing and its results would equally applicable to other 4wd’s. I am chuckling at all the comments being posted about fuel prices you are paying. Here in Australia, A$1.50 per liter is an average. By my rough calcs that is around US$4.09 a US gallon, so feeling your ‘pain’.

Thank you! My Wrangler saw a slight drop in fuel economy when I re-geared it, but an improvement in drivability, but it only has a 5 speed transmission. Different results for different model vehicles.

@@mathewmue5547 I just came home from a 5834 mile wheeling trip. Pulled a small camper. Did 8 days in Mab, then the Rubicon trail, then trails in Wyoming and back to Michigan. Avg 14.5 mog pulling the camper plus off road driving. I get about 18 to 19 on the hyw for normal driving and 15 around town. I see 8th gear all the time even pulling the camper. 8th gear in town above 45 mph. 5.13 gears and never look back. The 5.13 gears are perfect with the 8 speed auto.

I am wondering what the change will be when you go low pro on the tent? Let’s face it, there is a ton of gear on the rig and to be honest.......you didn’t buy it for the gas mileage!

Great explanation of regearing. I regeared my 2017 Tacoma DCLB auto this year and finally found 6th gear! MPG improved by approximately 3 mpg overall since it could finally find cruising gear. And the transmission hunt finally stopped too. Great video Brad.
Oh, forgot to mention that I didnt recalibrate the speedo. So probably increased MPG a little more. Just running 33's tho.

Crazy how my 06 Toyota 'V8' Sequoia gets better MPG than your original gears. Now you're getting about what I get now in 20°F weather. I like both vehicles though.

Thanks Brad - I’ve been waiting on a video about re-gearing the Gladiator! How many hours labor did that take? I imagine it’s expensive. Also does it void the manufacturer warranty on the drivetrain?
I was told that it does not void the manufactures warranty when doing a lift & regear. There was some sort of landmark case that made it possible to retain the manufactures warranty & they can't drop you for it. I could have been lied by my Jeep shop you never know but this was what I was told.
From an internet search:
Regearing does not void your warranty, BUT don't expect a Jeep dealer to fix any issues with gears that failed. The replacement parts would be your responsibility to get from aftermarket manufacturer.
re-gearing has been hands done one of the best upgrades ever. We got the Jeep with 35" and it always lost power uphill. Still breaking in the new 4.88 but it is exceptionally noticeable the already better MPG in slow driving around town and it feels stronger.

I free wheel on long downhills. Got 20 mpg one time from Donner to Colfax.
Gladiator Mojave 6-sp Manual I get 17-18 city 19-24 hwy. Keep it under 2200 rpms the 3.6 is amazing considering this is a lifted truck on 33 mud terrain tires. My friends taco only get 16 with 275 all terrain tires. I will do a video on this later.

I noticed the 8th gear issue with my JLU Sport S when I put 35s on it. I don’t believe my stock diff can do the 4.88s that I really need. So, now I need to be thinking about replacement axle! Ah, the Jeep life!

2008 JKUR.. Dealer had put 35's on it already w/2.5"lift. Stock gears were the 4.10's. Pulling a trailer at 70 mph on the hiway, only time it would get out of 2nd gear was downhill. I went to 5.38's (also cryo-dipped them) and I at least stay in 3rd now. W/O trailer, even the OD stays in better. Ya, is the 3.8. But my mpg did come up too.. Varies on what I do, but 1~2 range is common. And yes, I is much more spunky both on street, and crawls crazy great.. Thou, off road, I have use the programmer to set to crawl mode. Too jumpy if don't..
Hiway mpg.. Around 15±. Have been into the 16's under ideal conditions a couple of times. 12.5~13 common around town. All is better then with the stock gears.. 63k on it currently. Gears were put in at 10k.
Cool video. Better acceleration and better gas mileage. Win/Win.. You had to reprogram everything for the gears and the tires? Also, there was a difference between the computer and the real gas used on the 1st test, what about the 2nd test?

Just regeared my Gladiator with 37 with 5.13 set. I am in the break in period but already can tell that the truck is much happier. It shifts through gears faster and D8 is now the norm.
What kind of fuel mileage you getting with that setup and what size lift?
@@tylercoleman2460 Honestly 14-15 mpg. I drive most times on the highway at 75-80 mph and have a 30 mile commute daily. IF you drive slower, you should cut into 17-18s. I just had a 3.5 in Teraflex lift installed (went from the AEV spacer lift setup I had originally.
So higher final gear ratio = lower gear on the highway?
$4/gal for 87???? Yeah, I'd be worried about MPG if I lived there too.

The iDRIVE throttle controller has greatly increased by fuel mileage on my lifted with 38s 2014 JKU by using the E-1-9 mode, it softens the throttle, and it increases my mileage to better than factory predictions, but then I can go to u mode and have lots of throttle.

This is why I love this channel. That little extra that you give to add some real-world examples/results of the modifications. Lab specs are great for comparing products but being able to see what the product will do for you on your rig is something that is hugely missed by many. Nicely done and thank you!
As a general rule, to stay safe you should pace yourself, not overexert, rest often, drink plenty of water and eat regularly throughout your hike. There are, however, some specific injuries and afflictions that you need to be aware of so that you can deal with them.
It also doesnt feel like its going to explode going up a a mountain.

On my JKU I ran 5.38 on 37s. That thing went about anywhere. I test drive a JT Overland on 37s yesterday and it drive well but didn't have gears done. It wouldn't back over a curb until I put it in 4lo and it struggled then. I'm really thinking about the Gladiator but now I'm trying to figure out the payload issue.

Ugh....those California gas prices are brutal! Come to Texas it's bouncing between $2.05 - $2.25 where I am.

So this was already with the 38s? Makes sense that the MPG got better. Engine was very bogged down at higher gears and stayed at way lower gears.

I’m still not sold on the need to re gear with the 8 speed. 2,000rpm at 75mph it doesn’t matter what gear your in. I’ve found speed is so critical with these trucks JT at 40mph I get 23mpg on 33s with 3:73 at 80mph 19mpg. Temperature, humidity, altitude all have an impact- they were wearing jackets in the 2nd test cooler dense air yields better combustion.
Well you are running 33. Gearing only makes sense when you go to 35, 37 or even greater.

I'm curious how many RPM's your turning at 65mph. My 2dr JL with a 6spd manual and 3.45 gears on 35-inch tires turns 1500 RPM at 65mph. I usually stay in 5th gear on the highway because I'll lose speed going up grades. I do average 21mpg. I'm planning on upgrading to Rubicon axles. I think the 4:10 gears would work well with 35's.
Jeepdog JL 4.10 or 4.27 is a great choice for 35”s

I've always seen that tower and UFO's going to and from the desert, but never stopped and checked it out. Pretty cool to hear the story of the tower.

I would challenge you to get your tent mounted below your hardtop top and see what your mpg would be. Either a half rack or mounted to crossbars on the oem bed rails

I've been to that tower! On our way to San Diego from Tucson. Even did some rockhounding in the area. That area made my wife a little uneasy, so of course I want to stop there every time we go by it. lol

Brad, you are talking about 16-17.2 MPG in the video but your math and captions actually show 15.2-17.1 MPG which is 12.5% improvement! Very impressive with the weight and lack of aerodynamics.
