Our week takes an unexpected turn when our efforts to renew our visas fail. We must make a mad dash to civilization or risk being in the Philippines illegally. Because no matter how far away we sail, or how remote the destination, bureaucracy is the one thing we cannot escape.
And, rather than take the easy route, we decided to turn the whole inconvenience into a challenge.
🚴🏻‍♂️🚴🏼‍♀️ If you'd like to check out the @ridecarbo carbon fiber ebikes we're riding in this adventure, you can find details and a $100 discount on our website: www.gonewiththewynns.com/curi...
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________
WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of explorers, modern-day documentarians, and cultivators of curiosity.
We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us.
    Things We're Most Curious About...
    GETTING OFF-GRID
Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. So self-reliance and sustainable living are a must. We've learned heaps about renewable energy, managing waste, creating safe drinking water and foraging for food. We carefully manage our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so.
    TALKING TO STRANGERS
People are busy (even on remote islands) and travelers are a dime a dozen. It takes time to talk to strangers, and even more time to have a real connection. Going the extra mile to get to know someone is a commitment.
Which is why these are our most treasured experiences. Setting off into the world with curiosity as our guide and nature as our compass. We talk to strangers and accept hospitality without fear or reservations. Both giving and receiving.
    ALTERNATIVE LIVING
These are people who are doing things differently. Forgoing the mainstream, seeking freedom and living on the margins. Creative, unique and inspiring people who challenge our ideas of home and community.
Our journey is ever-evolving but the mission remains the same: #CultivateCuriosity

No problem. You had a long bike adventure behind you and it's perfectly understandable. I was just pointing it out without any ill intent. Hence the smiling Emojis. I did not mean to get everyone so wound up over a simple error correction but as you probably know all to well and I should have realized, this is the Internet and people get so wound up over the little things. BTW I am an American living in Europe (so I use metric but think in Imperial) and honestly don't care if one uses one measuring system over another. Keep up the great videos and I look forward to you getting your Passports back! 😀

Those bikes are awesome but as cyclists my husband and I wanted to let you know that if you both raised your saddles you’d find cycling so much more comfortable & you’d put much less pressure through your knees 😊

    • @jaygee5693

Sound advice. Adjust the seat height so the toes on both feet can just reach the ground when you are seated, then the legs should almost straighten out on each down stroke. This gives maximum power for minimum effort.
Trying to ride with knees bent is inefficient and tiring. Edit: Not nearly so important for e-bikes, but still relevant on an all day ride.

    • @Neilhuny
      @Neilhuny 18 дней назад +3

Thank goodness I looked for a comment like this before before I wrote exactly the same thing!
It would make an enormous difference to their stamina/distance traveled... However, I have seen it on other fold away bikes and I suspect that the seat tube doesn't allow for more height ... I don't know.
But, Nikki and Jason, raise your seat height as high as you can. The ideal would be something like you sitting at a junction/at a standstill with just your tippy-toes on the ground, and heels up. For the same effort of cycling I am certain that you will go twice as far! Just like @jaygee5693 said

    • @Neilhuny

Quick addendum - I scanned down the comments and found that at least the following said the same

    • @jaygee5693
      @jaygee5693 18 дней назад +1

@@Neilhuny Yeah well, when there are so many comments, you can only scroll down so far before deciding whether or not to offer an opinion. At least Jason and Nikki are guaranteed now to get the message, and with a few minor variations possibly to consider. Eg, some competitive cyclists like to have the toes of only one foot reaching the ground, so their leg is almost straight when at the lowest rotation point, whereas the almost universally endorsed "toes of both feet on the ground" rule does result in a slight bend at the knee.
If the end result is that in future they can e-cycle all day (with no recent training or practice), without unnecessarily over-taxing either their endurance or their knees, then all the repetition (nagging!?) was for the good. Certainly good for their algorithm too.

My husband and I decided to hold back on drinking water and let the kids have the bulk of it. It was a MISERABLE bike ride. That one little thing can change the whole experience for sure. Now we are investing in water backpacks for us and our kids. It's amazing how fast you can dehydrate.

    Great video.
My apologies if you get this comment a bunch. Seat height on a bike will help increase your pedal efficiency and might even help with knee pain.
The general rule of thumb is if you can pedal with your heel on the pedal, then you are at the right height to pedal using the regular part of your foot. This leaves a little bit of bend in the knee at the bottom of the pedal stroke.
Also if you remove your seat posts to store the bikes, it is common to wrap a piece of black electrical tape where the seat post enters the frame to mark the height.

One of my favorite books as a child was called "Go slow, stop often". It was a Disney book and when the group took Goofy's jalopy that broke down frequently, the kids chased butterflies and caught frogs and had a grand time, but when they took Mickey's nice car, they sat in the back, bored. The point to enjoy the journey has always stuck with me.
Jason had a little thrill with his battery life and then the relief of it making it. Had you taken a car, you would not have known the pleasure of the first taste of that cold beer and you would have missed the snacks with the view. You may not have even had your little picnic at the airport. You also would not have really gotten to see the island as well and certainly not have experienced the friendliness of the locals in the same way. It would have been an errand and not an adventure.

I spent 3 months + in P.I. 50 years ago. (Subic, USN) Your video reminded me so much of why I Love, love, love the Filipino's. They are so friendly. The definition of friendly and amiable! The world would be a better place if other cultures emulated.
I am so happy to see that has not changed at all as they slowed down to greet you as they passed you on the bikes. Also, the variety of vehicles they use and how many souls fit on each. Just remarkable how imaginative they can be.

When I began my year of cycling, I could not make it from work up the 400 foot hill to my home. Even with 27 gears, on my new road racing (entry level) bicycle, I had to hop off and walk. Three months in, however, I was cranking up the hill in 14th gear so hard I stretched two factory Shimano chains in two months before I upgraded to aftermarket hardened chains and sprockets (still have them, no stretch).
One Saturday, I decided to ride to a not-so-close town where I knew of an excellent restaurant. After a great repast and an outdoor nap, I rode back. 54 miles (87 km) round trip. It was then that I knew all those days of hard work riding to and from work as hard as I could had paid off. Conditioning really does require at least three days a week of hard 20 min exercise.
But you two - my hats off to you! No cycling trips in a year and you pulled it off! Please share how you felt over the next two days. 🤣

Tip on the bikes. If you can, adjust the seatpost when you need to carry them so that you can hook the nose of the seat over your shoulder and steady it with your hand on that side.
Also you might liok to see if you can get a smaller front sproket and a lager rear. It will drop your flat ground speed, but will make hills much easier.

This isn't about your great visa adventure, but I just wanted to comment about your boat choice. You probably know that several RUclips sailors have gotten new boats, or are in the process of getting one. I just have to say that I think your boat is an inspired choice, probably because I agree with all of your choices. I wasn't too sure on the color at first but I think it's a winner now, and the clean aesthetic inside suits my perfectionist point of view. The boat is beautiful inside and out. Here's wishing you all the best as I follow your adventures. Thanks for making great videos.

Cycling - the rule of thumb for saddle height is that it needs to be a bit higher than your in-seam. At and angle in your knee and other joints, your muscles and tendons lose essential power - in the angle (you know how to decompose into vectors?)
Second, if you can adjust your gear-ratio, go to a pedalling tempo of at least 80 RPM as the higher RPM are easier than the low ones you show in the video.

Just came back to the US after a year in the Philippines. You haven't lived bureaucracy until you've tried to survive it in the Philippines.
Try something as simple and as common as taking a vehicle from one island to the next. You're not going anywhere until you make the requisite visits to multiple government offices. This is to verify you're not stealing a vehicle and taking it to another island, I get it.
Heaven forbid your ferry canceled for one reason or another....all that paperwork you did has to be redone..... each and every time you try to take that trip.
During typhoon season, you can do it three or four days in a row.....same vehicle, same people, same government offices, same point of origin, same ferry, same destination, rinse and repeat.....after you pay fees each time..... until you finally give up and say the trip's not worth it.

Ahhh, the ebike thing. My wife and I started off with small "light" (55lbs with battery) Blix Vika Folders and they had 40 miles of range and 500 watts power. We quickly decided that range/power wasn't sufficient for our use case which was 40+plus mile rides. We now have dual battery bikes with 60+ mile range but they are 70 lbs and not folding so useless on a boat. We don't have a boat and use a hitch bike rack on our BEV/SUV so the bikes are a great addition for our vacation travel and home use.
Considering the marine environment making the non-carbon fibre parts rust up fast, limited range and their lack of off road capability, you may want to consider selling or trading them off. Also, belt drive is great but they look like single speed ers (no gears) so hills will always be an issue. I'm afraid it's one of those great sounding ideas (urban commuter) that lacks real world utility.

Their bikes retail for $2500.00 ? plus ! I got a Segway E110A 'scooter' for $2k 'out the door' a few months ago. No pedals. Looks a bit like a . It will go a long way (35 miles est.) but has already given me 10 miles for 400 watt-hours (400 watt re-charge) on a 1440 watt-hour battery. IF they had 're-gen' capability on those pesky 'Carbo' bikes they should have been able to recover significant energy/charge on the down-hills. Am disappointed with their lack of planning ( water ) etc. But then I am an arm-chair quarterback in my 'hobby-room' at home.
Same here, no pedaling for this 73 year old . . . unless I pull out the pedal-only bike from the garage! That has not happened lately since I have a walking routine. Am curious what e-bike you chose ? ? You 'built' it ? ?
      take care, rh

Your saddles are too low - that's why your knees hurt. adjust the seat to low point of the peddle stroke not to touching the ground with your feet. When climbing a hill, gear down and spin your peddles don't strain in a high gear. Your bike quit on you during the hill climb because you drew enough power to run the battery voltage below it's lower limit cut-off. A good ebike, like yours, has a low voltage protection circuit that kills power to protect the battery. Get the big battery!

Carbo sells two versions of this bike - one with gears and one with a single speed belt drive. The latter is really best for city commuters who are riding on the flat. If you are going to be tackling hills you should really get the geared version.

    • @jackblah5842
      @jackblah5842 19 дней назад +2

@@svkimbara5829 indeed, also a mid drive allows you to put the electric assist to the proper gear. When they reviewed these bikes and I saw them single speed I imagined exactly the issue they ran into. If you're on flat you really don't even need assistance and if you want to cross mountains you need gears. This ebike space is continually evolving, I'd like to see a mid drive / belt drive with gears in the hub.

Your bike seats were far too low. You'd have found it much easier with them at the right height. Also your battery range would've been better too. A good way to get the right height is that with the saddle under you, and a straight leg, your heel should be on the pedal. Then when you put the ball of your foot on the pedal to use normally your leg bend will be correct.
Also, Jason's battery cut out at the top of the hill because of voltage sag due to being under high load going up the hill. Voltage recovers over a few minutes, which is why he was able to continue.
Really, for hilly terrain, you need crank drive ebikes, so the motors take advantage of the gearing, not just the rider.

We have two LECTRIC eBikes and mine is the XPremium, which is supposed to be good for 100 miles...NOT! The best I have done is around 67 miles on a full charge of both batteries. They neglected to tell us that you don't get to those distances until you (we've) recharged the batteries 25-30 cycles. You may be running into that same issue, which means you should be able to go farther after several recharge cycles. Good luck either way.

BougeRV makes a 280* flexible portable solar panel that weighs 4 lbs. Hobotech shot holes in a panel with no Voltage loss. It would be great to charge a battery while you are biking?
Having an extra battery per bike. Because batteries sometimes gets funky. Is advisable in the future. Especially if you are biking while HOT. It looks like you might want to add shock absorber on your bike also?
Also, do you have a small fire extinguisher? What would you do if your battery caught fire?Just a thought because batteries do overheat and catch fire. And knowing your luck, it might be a good idea to have a plan for What IF?
