It's not as easy as it looks but once the basic movement pattern is nailed, it's so fun to do. It's a good practice drill when no time to head to the trails.
Absolutely love it! I've read about this but have yet to find a reasonable demostration of the actual technique. Much appreciated Phil! Keep the videos coming!
Ive only been watching your videos for a short while now, but They have been helping me a lot. your videos make so much more sense to me than other Mtb videos i've seen. Keep up the videos!!!
If only I knew about this a few days ago when my chain broke while I was out riding street. I had to push my bike along like a scooter for about 2 miles to get back home. Guess I should also get a multitool with a chain tool on it. now its time to try this!
+FrostBite Pokin this movement is what you used for berms and snaking around trees. It's just another skill to have in your bag for when you need to use it. While pumping long distances side to side isn't very practical the movements it teaches is super important
+Phil Kmetz MTB ah I see is this the same technique people use when they go really quick and just destroy a berm literally like flicking their back wheel off the berm if u get what I mean
This is ingenious... Utilizing camber thrust and sideways weight transfer for *forward* momentum... I didn't quite catch what you are saying at about 0:25 ("...generate speed on downslopes and maintain speed on ______slopes.") I got the gist of it, I am just interested in what the term is.
+Monkius I said upslopes. Essentially what I mean is you push off the ground right before the incline of a roller to make yourself temporarily weightless, and then compress downwards on the downslope. It's almost as if you are jumping over the incline and landing on the decline.
this is very similar to how I do long distance pumping on my longboard. I can go for miles without a push. It's fun when you get really good you can change up your cadence and add some style to it.
So I can sort of pump rollers, just learning and want to use pump in turns so I went to try this drill however I feel like a complete idiot. I feel like I have decent skills but sheesh, not for this. I am on a full suspension mtb though. So I just am wondering if there is some way I could brake it down in steps or something? Thanks for the great videos.
Hi Phil, quick question: I think about buying some small bike for fooling around in skateparks/dirtparks/streets and am not really sure if I should get a BMX or a DJ... I normally ride an aggressive All-Mountain Fully, and want to get some style into jumping etc and think BMX/DJ would be a good way to practice. What would you choose and why? I'm not a beginner with jumping stuff, so its not the basics I want to learn its more like learning tricks, how to handle the bike in the air properly etc :)
I personally would get a hard tail dirt jump bike because it opens up your options on what you can ride and is more stable in the air and easier to control over all. it's also gonna be more comfortable to ride. BMX bikes are smaller than you might think, and I'm a little dude and its not. too comfy and coming off the big bike it's SUPER sketchy in the air... just my 2 cents...
+Silentium I'd recommend going for a dirt jumper, but it's a little more money to get a good one. A bmx bike is a little cheaper but they feel really awkward when you are used to big bikes. I used to ride bmx all the time and now i feel very out of place on them.
Of course! 🌟 Yes, it's also a really good drill to do. It really translates out on the trail. With knoby tires and on the trail, pumping the ground will increase traction in turns.
You got any gold stars left four years later? BTW, I came here from a new Pinkbike article. Been subscribed for a couple years but didn't go back and watch the old vids.
⭐️⭐️ I saw that article but didn't realize they snuck in a link to a video! I should revisit these topics, I've wrongfully assumed People generally do go through my backlog and try to no duplicate video topics. I should probably revisit this topic. Thanks for the comment!
Unless you weigh 200kg the tires provide enough suspension and man, rims are made to survive so much more than a little pump, unless again you have a shitty bike.
Hey Phil what hardtail is that? I was lookink on your website but i couldn't find it. And while we are at it could you suggest me a dirt jump bike? I am looki g for something up to 1000$. I plan on buying one.
Phil: “See how long you can make it down your bike path before you get a weird look.” Me: *gets on bike in driveway* Neighbor: *gives weird look* Me: “I’m done...”
Awesome sauce brochacho. I practiced my flat ground pumping and like everything on a bike, looks easy but it ain't! Almost wiped out a few times when my technique got extra squirrely. I looked like the biggest newb out there trying this and not succeeding...lol
Five ten Karvers, they don't make them anymore so I bought a bunch and these are my last set. They are the same as the five ten impacts just with a lace cover and in a different color. They are the only shoes I use for riding, it's very hard to slip a pedal. Here's a link to Five Ten impacts if you're intereted: amzn.to/2aufsO3
Where Wud u apply this phil? The idea of pumping is because u can't peddle. In this scenerio u can. And the by lateral movement seems like u are using more energy then the actual speed effect from the action.
+Mark Blacoe this is honestly the fundamentals of turning. While you don't do this in every turn, but this is used to maintain traction in turns and snap out of them. This is also the basic concept of riding a turn that has a slight camber or full on berm. Now you don't want to do this instead of pedaling, but it very very useful.
how to get home without a chain
I used to have a bike with no chain or brakes, I called it a brainless bike. Riding skateparks with that thing was super weird.
i like that bike
i want my medal XD
Solid choice, here you go Hunter! 🏅
XD thanks
It's not as easy as it looks but once the basic movement pattern is nailed, it's so fun to do. It's a good practice drill when no time to head to the trails.
It's definitely a good workout, you can feel the burn after few minutes.
Absolutely love it! I've read about this but have yet to find a reasonable demostration of the actual technique. Much appreciated Phil! Keep the videos coming!
No problem man, have fun with it!
How have I not even thought about this??? Thanks for making this video, I'm gonna try it as soon as I get on my bike!
Ive only been watching your videos for a short while now, but They have been helping me a lot. your videos make so much more sense to me than other Mtb videos i've seen. Keep up the videos!!!
this also works with a road bike!
Really useful skill, thanks for the vid.
If only I knew about this a few days ago when my chain broke while I was out riding street. I had to push my bike along like a scooter for about 2 miles to get back home. Guess I should also get a multitool with a chain tool on it. now its time to try this!
I have just got back into biking and have a local quarry with a lot of berms, so will have a practice
Love your videos brotha!!! Greetings from east Texas :) I have learned so much from you, I appreciate it man!
I used to do this as a kid with roller skates, 60 years ago. Never thought of trying on a bike.
Hey phil, I've been watching your how to playlist, I was wondering if you could do a video on how to ride faster while maintaining control
Found this channel while watching Seth's channel...Now I need to sponsor this guy too. :)
hey Phil, I'm curious how much speed can u generate? I've gotten up to 19mph on a rigid dump bike. I'd love to see a vid of u taking on the challenge.
Greg video Phil, I haven't seen a video teaching it like this
We used to do pump races all the time, they were some of my favorite things and not many people talk about it.
I can"t wait to try this on my new Trek Fuel EX9 good video keep it up!!
New bike days are the best, happy trails!
+Phil Kmetz MTB thanks man i hope so!!!
Dziękujemy.
Great video as always! Keep it up!
needles too say, vital, one'o root of it all tech to ride well , ride safe
Thank you!
whoa !!! thanks Phil
nice video! subbed. reminded me of William (not Bill) Nealy's [RIP] approach of breaking down a skill. needles to say
Strava is going to be way off on the calories burned on this ride. Ha!
Mountain biking wizard bro. Nice video!
Thanks Heather, that term has a good ring to it!
I have a hard time imagining you biking with a wizard's robe on! and holding a wand too! hahahhaha Great Tip, btw!!! Alakazam! :D
+TheKb117 He should totally do a video with a wizard robe😂😂😂😂
The music goes perfect with this haha 😂
Great vid. Also - GOLD STAR PLEASE.
+jmblur 🌟 man I'm running out of gold stars, they are a popular choice 😝
Hahahah perfect intro music.
Phil Kmetz, you da man!
Didn't know you could do this on a bike! I do it on my longboard all the time, it'll be interesting to see how it translates.
Yeah I used to skateboard (I sucked) but I would pump around all over the place since I pushed mongo =P
It probably takes less energy to just pedal but this is still pretty cool!
Prolly just for chain less situations when you gotta get home by road
+FrostBite Pokin this movement is what you used for berms and snaking around trees. It's just another skill to have in your bag for when you need to use it. While pumping long distances side to side isn't very practical the movements it teaches is super important
+Phil Kmetz MTB ah I see is this the same technique people use when they go really quick and just destroy a berm literally like flicking their back wheel off the berm if u get what I mean
Funny, I discovered this on BMX bikes in the late 70's. Didn't even know it was a real thing. lol

Thx phil for replying
definitely tough to do on a full suspension bike, tried to practise on the dh bike, yeah maybe not haha
I wonder how much of this can be applied to a something heavier, like a dirt bike or supermoto.
thanks i was just joking love the channel when are you going to do another video
I remember doing this when is was 7 :)
Zelicanth wow so cool...
I remember doing double backflips when I was 5
I love playing bikes
Play bikes 24/7
this is very similar to how I do long distance pumping on my longboard. I can go for miles without a push. It's fun when you get really good you can change up your cadence and add some style to it.
Hi you have some great videos what is the best MTB you can recommend for 650 or under? I am currently looking at a diamondback hook. Thanks
So I can sort of pump rollers, just learning and want to use pump in turns so I went to try this drill however I feel like a complete idiot. I feel like I have decent skills but sheesh, not for this. I say DJ too
Thanks guys for the recommendations - looks like a DJ is the way to go then :)
Pretty cool, looks like this is a nice way to make a boring stretch of road a lot more fun. Can I get a star too? :-)
Of course! 🌟
Yes, it's also a really good drill to do. It really translates out on the trail. With knoby tires and on the trail, pumping the ground will increase traction in turns.
Good video 👍🏻

@@SkillsWithPhil Cheers! Yeah, in my case, I have too many subscriptions to watch everybody's old stuff. It would be a full-time job!
Phil, can you do a tutorial on how to fakie for complete noobs?
Could you make a video of how to back wheel hop on the DH bike?
Hey Phil, what pedals do you use for your dj bike? I just got my NS Zircus and am trying to make it a bit nicer.
Phil could you recommend a jump bike with gears please?
I'm pretty new to MT biking but I kindle use this technique to help climb hills, is this an okay thing to do?
i tried this later after watching lol you would not beeellllieve the looks you get lol hahahaha
+Nanchi that's why I try to hide when I do it hehe
+Phil Kmetz MTB Poland I did it in the middle of straight streets lol hahaha🚳⚠
I get weird looks on the bike paths even without doing this.
Hey Phil Great tut, but does this technique has its negative sides? like bending the wheels? Thanks.
Unless you weigh 200kg the tires provide enough suspension and man, rims are made to survive so much more than a little pump, unless again you have a shitty bike.
Verbal "thumbs up"!
Keep up the e funk! :)
By the way... I want my gold star LOL :P
Gotta keep things funky. And as promised here you go: 🌟
what type of dirt jump bike are you using in the video?
Hey Phil what hardtail is that? I was lookink on your website but i couldn't find it. And while we are at it could you suggest me a dirt jump bike? I am looki g for something up to 1000$. I plan on buying one.
+Nikola Paspalj the frame is a deity streetsweeper v1. It's a great skatepark and dirt jump bike
+Phil Kmetz MTB Thanks Dude! :)
pedals should be level? can't do this outside foot down?
Phil: “See how long you can make it down your bike path before you get a weird look.”
Me: *gets on bike in driveway*
Neighbor: *gives weird look*
Me: “I’m done...”
Is it a lot like doing cutties?

Awesome sauce brochacho. I practiced my flat ground pumping and like everything on a bike, looks easy but it ain't! Almost wiped out a few times when my technique got extra squirrely. I looked like the biggest newb out there trying this and not succeeding...lol
What are those shoes you've got on?
Five ten Karvers, they don't make them anymore so I bought a bunch and these are my last set. They are the same as the five ten impacts just with a lace cover and in a different color. They are the only shoes I use for riding, it's very hard to slip a pedal.

+Trail Seeker right here 🌟! Thank you :)
its how skating works, so basically this is bike skating
+TJ Max that's actually a great comparison. As a former hockey player I should have thought of that. Thanks!!
Sick vid u should be pro
Thanks hamish, and I am =P
+Phil Kmetz MTB sorry 😂😂

I smashed out my teeth doing this down a hill
May I get a gold medal?(phil told me to)
+Ryker Radley 🏅🥇🎖️⬅️ you can choose which gold medal you like most.
Skills With Phil I think the left medal

Great Video as always, but can we do without the cheesy 90s PSA music?
this confuses the google cars
