My wife was just watching over my shoulder and remarked: "If you had that much patience teaching me I would have been a downhill racer". Keep up the good work!
😂 😂 😂
Haha it is definitely a skill in itself to teach with patience!
April is a superb student. Most women should study her just to learn how to learn. Her attitude is amazing and she does not seem to feel personally attacked by constructive criticism. That makes her one in about 5 million.
@@gatoryak7332 "April is a superb student. Most people should study her..." - fixed it for you.
I agree with the second sentiment, that many people cannot take any amount of constructive criticism without taking personal offense.
@@andrewc6538 Sure, I'll agree with that. However, I was responding to MbanziSD, whose wife blames her troubles on his supposed teaching impatience. Almost every guy who has tried to coach his girlfriend or wife has had that experience. I've successfully taught skills to several women, but I can't really claim success in teaching any of my girlfriends. I've also failed at teaching women who have poor learning attitudes. Those types of women are why women-only clinics thrive. I've never had a problem coaching men.
BTW, I think it's a shame - my favorite activities are male-dominated, but women are as capable and can be as proficient as men. I have learned much from women, especially in regard to finesse vs. brawn. It's far more enjoyable for me if there are women sharing the experience. I prefer the mix of feminine and masculine energies.
"anyone can go fast into a corner, good riders go fast out of corners". That's the quote of all time.
Its a simple thing that has always been cemented in my mind since i heard it haha. funny how those work sometimes!
For anyone wondering if Kyle and April are like this in real life... absolutely! Genuinely nice people who truly support our local MTB community.
I’m grateful to see these videos getting such a great response. We’re lucky to have them here!
Thank you so much Carlos :) we are lucky to have you in the community helping us get awesome places to ride :)
I want to be adopted by them. And I am a mid 30s guy.
100%. I ran into them earlier this year at the Boise Bike Park, and said hi, and they were exactly like you see them here - super friendly, humble, awesome people. Cheers, Kyle & April!
I’m a therapist and biker....you do an incredible job reinforcing behaviors and keeping things positive while giving feedback and coaching. You have a natural ability in teaching and coaching. Love the videos and I’m learning a bunch from the two of you!
Wow, thank you! Thats so nice to hear :) I really appreciate that
I’ve seen countless how to MTB videos. You are, in my opinion, the best teacher on RUclips. Thank you...
Wow, thanks! We are trying our best :)
Plus April is hot.
I agree with the statement that Kyle is one of the best instructors putting videos out. Keep it up!
I agree! Very well explained.
It’s my opinion too. Greetings from Germany.
Best private coach on RUclips. I can’t even imagine what this would cost to hire u per hour. Thank u for the time and knowledge u two give. I love the comment of “anyone can go into a corner fast, only pros leave a corner fast”. To be honest, it cut deep and made me re evaluate. Thx!! 😀
Haha thanks, hopefully we can do some coaching in person eventually!
@@AprilRideMTB That would be epic. Where are you guys at, or would you travel to teach? Thanks.
I would travel where you are to get some coaching!
Donot Robme agree

Love it
Cornering at speed is one thing that's really holding my MTB fun back, especially on flat. I saw this last night and then spent this morning on tarmac doing the drills above and it's *insane* how much more rooted I felt to the ground. Hit a trail afterwards and was so much quicker and more confident, now I've just got to figure out how to hit the jump after the last corner about twice as fast as I normally do!
Yeahhhh! We love to hear when you guys get instant results!
He mentioned going to the basketball court to fool around. I always suggest to people that when they are waiting for other riders to show up, spend the time playing on their bikes instead of just sitting there. Practice anything, track stands, bunny hops, see how small a figure eight you can ride. It’s all good!
So many people could benefit from that advice!!
I really hope you guys find this video helpful :) it was a lot of information to try to cover in one day / video so if you have any things you would like to see in part 2 let us know in the comments! Thank you all for being so awesome! we love our crew!
You are so welcome, these nice comments mean the world to both of us and you guys being supportive makes us want to do more of these :)
Here's something I haven't seen addressed in other cornering videos but I'm always wondering about. The corners on my trails don't always look as pristine and open as these since im in new England. How do you navigate more "technical" rocky/rooty corners or ones that may also come with an incline and require some pedaling. Is it generally preferable to have your seat down when cornering?
hard to imagine how people learn trail skills before youtube.
Best MTB tutorials on RUclips, please keep them coming, they have helped me improve a lot
Good video. Great breakdown of the finer points. April its awesome that youre willing to share your progression. So many videos just show the pros doing it perfect all the time. This stuff feels more real and relatable. Thanks for all the tips. Just subscribed!
I must say you are one of the most patient and helpful instructors on RUclips ! I’ve leaned more from your videos so far than from 100s of others I’ve watched. Thank you for your incredible instruction and keep ‘em coming. Fantastic series!
Thank you so much Steve, that means a lot!
Also, you two are relationship goals. I hope I one day find someone who looks and smiles at me the way April does to you haha!
Being such a noob (first trail yesterday), I can’t believe how helpful and on-point these vids are. I really appreciate the work you guys put in to these!
Glad it helped Troy!
I've never seen a better instructor or student, Kyle is really gifted in communication and technique. And April has great focus and attitude. Thank you for these really helpful classes
Thank you so much for the kind comment to both of us! 😊
I LOVE the Kyle and April video series. I’m learning so much! The way you structure these videos totally aligns with the way my brain works.
Awesome! Thank you so much!
What's so valuable to me about this video is seeing how a true novice would perform a technique poorly, and then seeing it visually compared with correct technique (the annotated stills are fantastic!)
So often skilled instructors show you the right way of doing something, and when they try to imitate the "wrong" way, it just looks odd, because they can't do it naturally. :-)
Huge thank you to both of you for using this invaluable pedagogical technique so that we n00bs can really see what can go wrong and how to improve on it.
So glad that you find our dynamic useful for you 😊😊😊
Lol this channel is next level, this is a masterclass on how to make dating tax deductible.
I have been riding a long time and this is one of the BEST videos I have ever seen on cornering techniques.
I love April's attitude as well. You guys make it really easy to just relax and learn. The fact that April is a 'novice' and getting results due to your coaching is very encouraging as well.
A lot of experts just gloss over stuff and don't fill in the blanks and you simply fail when you try to do as they suggest.
You guys stick to the basics with a really easy to understand and follow approach. SUBSCRIBED and Thumbs UP. Looking forward to more of your videos.
Thanks so much That! We are glad you think this is one of the BEST videos this!!! Stoked you have joined along with a sub :)
Kyle and April, I'm kind of a newbie to mountain biking and I've learned so much about how to corner from this video. However, the most important lesson I've learned is seeing the love, patience and understanding that you display as a couple. I think if there were more like you two, there'd be less divorces in the world.
Awww thank you so much!!! 😊😊😊
"Any rider can go fast into a corner, good riders go fast out of a corner" I like that and it makes sense. I've always struggled on flat turns!!
This video was a GAME-CHANGER for me. I'm taking corners at 2x to approaching 3x faster and with more confidence despite the increased speed. Thanks Kyle & April for all the great material. Sincerely appreciated!!
Seriously?!
April is really good student, she listen and apply really quickly congratulations guys.
Thank you Aldemar!
De nada
April is so sweet with her personality and manners and Kyle is soo good at teaching and motivating. Amazing seeing the progress !
Thank you so much!!! :)
i watched this, and i realized that's how i naturally corner. i've never watched any videos about cornering before this. my form was off a little, and this video helped correct that. thanks for the help!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!!
I know what you mean. Keeping my head forward and dropping the outside leg were things I thought I was doing right and watching this video explained in great detail why that works. The bike separation and looking farther ahead are things I didn't know at all and I can really work on.
im 46 years old, and ive done some very casual MTB when i was younger...but now that the kids are older and im starting to have more time , i will try all thoses tips !!
best teacher, patience and great advices....and the attitude of your student !!
the line , the pause,.... it really help . thx so much.
Thank you so much, glad you are having fun with MTB again!
The much waited video is out!
Watched it now: The position breakdown makes all the difference! Thank you for taking time to think it through and making such a great teaching video! And it was awesome to see April's improvement on her turns when you got back to the trails! Can't wait for the part 2!
Glad you enjoyed it! It was a tough one for Kyle and I to fit into one video!
Fantastic stuff! Even a seasoned rider will pull some nuggets from these vids! Great instruction... even better that you're local, and riding some very familiar territory. Keep up the vids coming!
Totally agree Dan! Even doing the videos helped Kyle himself at his last race haha
Guys, this is exceptionally done.
Everything from technique, teaching strategies, to just being kind to one another.
Brilliantly done.
I just started riding and I fricken love these videos. Thank you for teaching so clearly and with support and encouragement! It is refreshing and I'm learning a lot!!!
I love calmness and composure in this girl. A good teacher and a clever student
Thank you so much, I have always been a little insecure about how calm I am haha
@@AprilRideMTB No need to be April.. It's a great asset to have. :)
You guys have the best teaching technique I’ve seen. Using April as a student and watching her progressing is brilliant. I learn something after every video. My 5 year old son and I watch them together and he is learning as well. Thanks for such great content!
Wow, thank you! That is so cool to hear :)
I love the recap April gives at the end, and I really appreciate Kyle going into the reasoning behind each tweak-- it makes it easier for me to understand and apply. Every video not only makes me a better rider but also inspires me to get out on the trails. Seriously, thanks so much.
Our pleasure! Thank you so much for watching and being a part of our crew :)
All your videos are just amazing, putting all this knowledge to practice is soooo rewarding. I feel like a kid again blasting through trails knowing better what to do. Every MTB session is better than the previous one thanks to you guys.
I really appreciate this format and have been learning so much, plus it's so energizing to see you two beaming at each other 🌟
Aww thanks so much!!! :)
Wow, that is very well broken down tutorial guys. I"m loving the ongoing dynamic between what presents as a willing and able student responding so well to thoughtful coaching through thoughtful language. Outstanding work guys...
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much craig!!!
Really helpful instruction! Love the alighment tutorials and the detail- really helpful
Just found your channel, and this style of video is amazing! It’s rare to find someone actually teaching, so us noobs can see what a real session looks like, and then to also have all the exercises to learn a skill broken out and given in such an easy to apply way is great! I was also not knowing where to practice, as schools are always using the fields, and never even thought of the outdoor arena/basketball courts until seeing this. So practicing just got much simpler for me
Was about to sleep then this pops in my feed... No way I'll skip, been waiting for this🥰
You're the best! Thanks so much for watching even late at night!

Great vid!

Thank you Kyle and April for your great technique tips... AND for being such caring and decent human beings! ♥️👍
April has such a contagious smile.
I love this channel and you have the most helpful videos by far!
Thank you so much!
Can’t wait to watch, Ive been using these videos to help my sister get more comfortable and have more confidence on the bike!
Thats so cool to hear! Hopefully this one is helpful too :)
Y’all r the absolute best teachers for all of mtn biking. Keep it up
Wow, thanks Sam!
After watching hundred of videos, finally one channel that is clear as water at coaching. Amazing.
Glad you think so! Thanks Raul!
This is great. Your explanations are so clear! I’ve coached bike racing and ski racing and the parallels (no pun intended) are striking. It’s always good to hear how others describe a technique, I always learn something.
I think the #1 thing is to look ahead. It sets you up everything else and you can anticipate better.
“The essentials”. Great breakdowns, this has to help out many people, and for free. God’s work. Stay blessed
Thank you! You too!
Nah, Kyle's work 😁
I'm 43 yrs old and just started mtn biking love these helpful tutorials.
Kyle, as many have mentioned before, you're great in explaining everything. And as I mentioned in one of my comments, having you as a coach would be awesome and super helpful. You're always able to explain the little details. And as you mentioned in your comment on making this video, April does a great job! It's obvious she works hard and doesn't get frustrated. Love the way you coach her and she's so cute with her "thank you"'s every time you compliment her on the good job. Thanks for enlighten us!
Thank you so much Miguel! April is pretty shy, so "theeenks" is usually all that comes out haha
The step by step instruction is really a good teaching methods that explains things.
You two are so Humble😍, .Thank you and more power to both of you🤜🤛💪
I feel like I’m at the same level as April so seeing you coach her is so helpful! Thanks!
That's awesome Emily, glad you can relate! :)
Illustrations (arrows, lines, etc) help so much... Even after riding for 3 years still learning from your clear explanations... Awsome 🚲😀👏
Awesome, thanks Rene!
Another great tutorial! Breaking down the skills into progressive steps is very helpful. I practiced the first part yesterday - leaning side to side while staying on a straight line - and I can feel it helping to build muscle memory. In addition to doing this in a parking lot or other open space, it’s an exercise you can do on any straight section of trail. Thanks again for posting these - keep ‘em coming!
Love this video! I've been riding for 20+ years and following the guidance in the video and being mindful of my technique has made a huge difference in how i ride! I'm able to take turns faster and i feel in more control. Keep up the great content!
Thanks for this! Loving the videos!

Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for watching Yoshi!
Hi Kyle & April, This is John from India. I just bought a new basic MTB bike for my son who is 10 years now. He started to do some basic stunts like jumping, skidding, etc... but gets hurt most of the time when he tries something new as he is not aware of the skills and tricks. I am sure your channel is very informative and I am sure my son would love to learn through your videos. Thanks for taking that extra effort to teach us your skills through your videos.. Thanks again!
Thanks so much for watching John! I hope you and your boy enjoy the videos :)
So so helpful! Keen to see part 2 after a couple practise sessions.
April is such a good student. And Kyle does an excellent job explaining. I’ve watched sooooo many videos on cornering but this is by far the best! Guess what I’ll be doing tomorrow?!
Thanks so much, our masterplan to consume your weekends with riding is working haha
This was so incredibly helpful!!! I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone address foot position on flat vs foot position in berms. I’m so looking forward to pt 2. You guys are amazing!!!
Thanks Matthew!
could not agree more Matthew
Agree on the comments about Kyle's as an amazing teacher. I have just come back to mountain bking after a 25 year break! These videos are helping me recover my form. I used to do some racing, but find it's best to be humble and just start from the beginning as a beginner. You two are a wonderful pair and truly help me. Many thanks!
Guys, your videos are awesome, I learned so much. Thank you!
At 6:21 I like it how she sticks her tongue out and laughs hysterically. Great video you guys!! Im just thinking about getting into mountain biking or just biking in general but I would like to get an E bike.
You should! E bikes are a great way to get into it! Thats how I got April hooked :)
The analysis and graphics combined with your great personalities make these videos almost as good as in-person instruction. Way to go.
Wow, thank you Patrick! Glad you think so!
Great video! I rode pretty hard for the first time in a few years yesterday and I wiped out on a loose, flat turn like those you were practicing on. This video just popped up for me today and I learned a few things and was reminded of the raising the outside foot. I was starting to do that a few years ago and I completely forgot lol
Kyle, I have to commend you for your superb patience. Always calm and encouraging. That is the most important things for teaching. Love the videos
Thanks Terry!
The best breakdown of the how's and why's of cornering I've seen to date. I'll definitely be using this to work with my wife on her cornering. My cornering is very good from just riding aggressive off-road for yrs but I personally lack the teaching skills.
Can't thank you enough buddy!
Agility cones on order😊
Awesome, glad to help!
Exactly. I’ve been doing most of this instinctively for years. I have no idea how to explain it to someone else.
In my opinion you're the best RUclips MTB tutor. Even you made the seek bar has description each segments. You've got my respect for your effort.Well done!!
Thank you so much!!!
Love how patient you are. Also as a beginner, I understand what you are asking is to do. Thanks. I subscribed.
Hi to both from the UK! I have started biking in middle age and I have only been on the saddle for six months. Needless to say, I am learning every week and falling regularly - but - I happened to find your channel and watched this particular video several times and took the technique out onto the dirt and on a moderately fast downhill turn left and right the technique works perfectly. I am now much more confident although I do have to 'focus, think and act' but fluency will come later. Really great videos, really great production and team. I hope you get the success and commercial recognition you deserve. My go-to instruction from now on.
Turning 60 next Feb, decided to do a sprint tri ,,,,,,training the bike part on my old Gary Fisher hybrid on dirt tracks ,,,You videos are a great help ,,,,,,keep up the good work and safe cycling
Thanks Mark, hope it helps you for your race!
This video was so helpful for my girlfriend and I to improve our cornering! We had so much fun in the trails yesterday because of our new skills! Kyle you really are a great coach and your ability to pin point the little details that make the difference is amazing! So well explained! Thanks for your help! Hope to see more and more of your videos!
Thank you so much Jean!! Glad we could help you guys a little bit :)
Best explanations I’ve have found yet.. I love that your teaching April and showing us so we can see differences.
Great video guys. I always try to improve on the trail. Never really thought about practicing techniques in a controlled setting like a flat paved area. Definitely going to incorporate that.

Spot on !! - Think I've been waiting my whole cycling career for someone to draw "this is what you should be doing here" lines on an overhead view of a course (wasn't it in the 80's when they started doing that for NFL plays??). My huge thanks to you guys !!! Stellar !!
@@AprilRideMTB Agreed! My daughter and I still can't get over how fast you progressed to the big dropoff in the earlier video. I've surfed and skied forever, and haven't come close to trying one that big yet.
This was great Kyle. When I watched it, I thought "I already do that", but then when I went out and started thinking about it more actively, I realized I'm inconsistent, and often forget on more aggressive turns.
Glad you still tried it and learned more on cornering!
Thank you so much for this!!! It feels so inclusive, like riding really is for everyone (which it truly is). I remember riding as a kid I always felt like I didn't belong, so seeing your content now that I'm back to riding feels really good and makes me want to go out and get better.
That is so cool and thats definitely what we wanted to strive for! Everyone deserves to feel included in the MTB community and we just want to help facilitate that!
I love this channel! You guys have helped me grow my confidence while riding. I still need to rewatch the drops and bunny hops videos at least 10 more times. 🤙🏽
Thats so cool! Thanks for being a part of our crew!
When I first started improving my ability to corner by leaning the bike, I had a tendency to brake too much going into the turn but I had to force myself to go into it with more speed than I was initially comfortable with, and just send it.
if you're going too slow then the technique doesn't really work that well but if you're going fast enough to where you HAVE to lean the bike and keep your weight on the outside in order to make it through without crashing, that's when it gets fun and forces you to really remember to use that skill
Thanks for sharing your experience!
We
Kyle has MTB down to a science. Thats what happens when you dedicate your entire craft to something. I would listen to his advice over anyones, even paid coaches (for those damn rich kids that can afford coaches). Salute to you, Kyle!
Thanks so much Keith!
Kyle you are an awesome trainer. Very encouraging and you break it down nicely! Its awesome to watch April's progress!
Thank you C Kiki! :)

LOVE LOVE LOVE your videos! Your ability to key in on the nuances that are so easily overlooked while learning and often missed completely in other videos makes all the difference. My 11 year son and I are learning through you guys and the process has been so much fun!
That is so awesome James! Thanks for watching with us :)
These are the sweetest, most instructional videos ever. I really love to see you teach April with patience and the endearing way you both humorously interact with each other. It reminds me of trying to teach my GF snowboarding... can’t wait to get her into MTB’ing. Thanks so much for so many lessons, amazing these are for free. Very grateful.
Thank you so much for the kind comment!
1. Incredible coaching. I wish I had this kind of instruction when I started riding trails.
2. April seems to improve faster than I did. Probably a mix of talent and great coaching.
3 I've been using the wrong technique for years and wondered why bad stuff was happening, now I know why.
4. Where the heck were you when I was learning all this? I went over the bars, slid off the trail, down cliffs, into cars, other riders, in the corners, in the flats, in areas most riders would think was impossible to crash (I think I even invented new kinds of crashing).
Excellent video Kyle, and of course, April makes it so much more fun to watch.
Thank you for the kind comment to both of us. Some talent and on hand coaching does go a long way with improving skills! Haha hopefully we can help you now 😊
Kyle and April thanks so much for this tutorial! I tried breaking before a turn from your breaking video and it helps so much! I believe this video will help very much too!
You're so welcome! Thats awesome to hear the braking tutorial helped a bunch too :)
Excellent video as always!! And I love the fact that you're in Boise! I have been watching your videos and going through a lot of the techniques with my 11 year old son and my wife. They are both gaining a significant amount of confidence on the trails and are really starting to enjoy mountain biking and pushing themselves a lot more. Thank you and keep up the great work!!
That's awesome Jeff, we love to hear when families can bond through mountain biking and that we can help!

Damn, you’re a good teacher! Thanks for having such good DIAGRAMS and for the SLO-MOTION -that really helps! I’m anxious to try this after viewing this video a few more times. And after I get over the itch and rash from wiping out into POISON OAK. The itch is driving me crazy.
Thank you so much Jim! The diagrams and slo-mo are a lot of work, but so worth it to help you guys out! I have definitely been there before with the poison oak, hope you get better soon!

Great job on your videos. I started riding mtb over 20 years ago and am still picking up tons of useful tips from your videos. Keep it up!
Glad you like them!!! Thanks for watching!
Exceptionally well done video. The instructions were clear and you broke it down into all the individual details and then reconstruct it into the full thing. It is helpful to see it done well, and then to watch the progression as April absorbs the details. Subscribed! Thanks again.
Like I was told when starting on a street bike “ look where you want to go not where you’re going”
yeah, thats like the best advice ever!
Yep, like tight turns on a motorcycle: look where you want to be and the rest will follow
I’m a 47 year old woman just learning to mountain bike and completely out of my element. Your videos are so helpful! When I first started out I truly thought I’d made a mistake getting a Mt. bike as I was so afraid to ride it. I quickly realized my fear came from lack of knowledge. Once I started watching your videos I slowly started getting more and more brave as I put into practice the skills you two have taught. I’m still pretty afraid of going too fast or going down steeper downhills. Any tips you can give on getting over these fears would be greatly appreciated. Also my feet slip off of my pedals sometimes, I have flat pedals (no clips) which really throws me off and sometimes almost causes me to crash, any tips on fixing this? Thanks so much! You two are fearless and adorable and I love your videos!

I've been motivated now to take out my bike after work starting this week when I found your channel. Every night in the dead of our winter (no snow btw) to practice your drills and I already felt an improvement in my cornering, braking. Woooohooo!! Thanks for sharing your stoke!!
That is awesome Diamond, it is hard to find motivation in winter!

Thank you! Its been super fun making these for you guys :)
These are the most detailed instructional videos that I have seen on RUclips. However there is one simple cornering tip that I never see emphasizing enough in any video. A tip that helps in any turn. The tip is to simply turn your body in the direction that you are turning by turning your hips in that direction. This makes much more of difference then it seems like it should. If you are looking ahead through the turn you will unconsciously do this to some degree, but by consciously being aware of this it help to always make sure that you use this technique. This is something that I always think about when I’m riding. To be fair most instructional videos or articles will mention this this but they usually throw it in with other instructions, they usually don’t mention how effective it is in and of itself. Maybe a lot people intuitively do this but it toke me a while to figure this out. PS - I give April lots of credit for showing her mistakes in the videos, these are mistakes that we all make and they are helpful to see.
Thanks for adding this great tip for people to see Glenn!
