      I have a Teen Titans book from 1980. She has a flash back of her self as a baby in a burning building with Wonder Woman flying to her rescue. After words she was brought up on Paradise island by the other goddesses there. Then she became Wonder Girl. No history of who her parents were however.

      @@mikerosoft2179 in my opinion, she could've made a great character in DCEU for a Wonder Woman sequel prior to the premier of Wonder Woman 1984. I mean it would've mean something to Donna after Diana and her mother took her in and raise her. It would have made Donna's first live film appearance. Maybe if Wonder Woman gets a third sequel, that would be great.

    There was absolutely nothing wrong with Donna’s origin as you laid it out.
    What do I think about Titans? It seems the only character the creators care about is Nightwing. The finale of season 2 was much like the opener: pedantic and anticlimactic. The writing is so bad I started hate watching. What they did to Donna was either intellectual dishonest or mental myopia at its best.

    I started reading Teen Titans before JLA and Wonder Woman, so with the similar color scheme to Robin, the Boy Wonder -- I assumed Donna was his sister. Of course, once I learned of Wonder Woman -- the pieces came together. As much as I liked Perez's Wonder Woman -- it was mistake retcon all of her established history -- and Donna's character really suffered because of it.

    So far as I'm concerned, this is THE Donna origin. It's simple, it makes sense, it fits both her and Wonder Woman's characters, and it doesn't make you cross-eyed if you think about it too long. I get that Crisis messed it up, but they REALLY should have just tried to make it work somehow, instead of adding more and more alternate versions that make progressively less and less sense.

      They just don't leave her origin alone. Editors and writers keep messing with it. The same goes for Wonder Woman. The purpose of Crisis was to get rid of that continuity mess she had built up over the years so she could start all over, but it wasn't long before history was repeating itself.

    My question was always, "If she was a baby, then how long was WW active as a superhero? And, by extension, the other A-List heroes like Superman and Batman. If Robin came along only a year or so after Batman began his career, then when did WW begin her career?

      The pre-Crisis Earth-One Wonder Woman would just start her career as a superhero when she saved an infant Donna Troy from a fire, meaning that she made her debut years after the original Superboy started his career but before Batman and Robin started their careers.

    You didn't mention it, but Wonder Girl also made a brief sojourn into live action TV back in the 1970s when she appeared on the Wonder Woman tv show starring Linda Carter. Wonder Girl was played by Debra Winger, BUT the name they gave her on the show was Drusila, and she was Wonder Woman's younger sister.

  • @EVENINGWOLF666
    @EVENINGWOLF666 4 года назад +1

    This was the origin that I grew up with in the 70's and 80's. It's still the only origin for her that I actually like. It ticks all the boxes except who here real parents were and why were they in that apartment that wasn't even rented. I will admit that her quest to find out who she was before that fire did sort of mirror the journey of the character Lilith in the original Titans series as she looked for her real family after learning she was adopted (great series of back up stories in those issues by the way) but it did add a bit of pathos to the character and gave us some moments of emotion and conflict as a sub- plot that did kind of keep things moving along, at least until Original crisis and all the retcons screwed it up.
    I don't know that I have a particular favorite origin story, but my favorite kind of origins story is usually where the hero has to overcome come obstacle by training and learning and when that is all done they realize that they have, for all intents and purposes, become a hero.

    Having thought about this origin story for way too many years, I still have two questions (that nobody can answer):
    (1) Where did Donna Troy get her magic lasso from? In Wonder Woman's origin stories, there was only ever one magic lasso, so how does Donna Troy get a lasso?
    (2) So, who was the first (major) superhero on Earth 1? If Wonder Woman rescued Donna Troy as a baby approximately 15 years ago, then Wonder Woman was active as a superhero on Earth 1 for at least 15 years prior to this story. Was Superman "Superman" fifteen years ago, or was he still Superboy? Was Wonder Woman active as a hero while Superman was still just a boy?
    Of course, the Impossible Tales with Wonder Tot, Wonder Girl, Wonder Woman, and Wonder Queen have their own issues. Apart from that one story where Wonder Girl pines for her long lost sailor father (what the?), these stories suggest that when Diana was a baby (and a girl), she was dressing in "Wonder" fashion, with a magic lasso and everything. Now think about Wonder Woman's actual origin where there is a contest to see who will become Wonder Woman and who will get the magic lasso. If Diana already had the costume and lasso and codename when she was a baby (and a girl), then there's not really much surprise that Wonder Girl is the person who will become Wonder Woman... even as Diana's mom forbids her from entering the competition. Craziness.

    • @joshuaingobo1559
      @joshuaingobo1559 2 года назад

      1. I would assume that Donna Troy got her magic lasso from the Amazons of Paradise Island.
      2. Superboy was the first major superhero on Earth-One. I would assume that Wonder Woman, who was nineteen years old as this point, rescued Donna Troy a year before Superboy made his debut as Superman, since both of them would be the same age as each other. This would also mean that Wonder Woman was active eleven years after Superboy started his superhero career.

    Yes, I agree with you that Donna's first origin was the BEST one. That second one rubbed me the wrong way. I'm referring to the George Perez Titans of Myth where Donna arrives years before Diana. In my opinion, that's was an insult to William Marston and his creation of Wonder Woman. Had it not been for Wonder Woman, we wouldn't have a Wonder Girl or Donna Troy. Although, he received alot of heat in the 90s, I was one of few fans whom liked the John Byrne doppelganger origin. At least with Byrne, you see him reconnecting Donna to Diana and the Amazons unlike Perez who severed the relationship altogether. Furthermore, I don't consider Brave and the Bold #60 as Wonder Girl's (Donna Troy) first appearance. As you stated in this video (and another one) Wonder Woman #123 (first series) touch upon that Wonder Girl was a separate character from Diana. That's Donna 1st appearance! During the Impossible Tales era, the WG character received alot of fan mail from young girls. This is why she had a number of solo features in the early to mid sixties. I believe Haney was aware of this popularity and added her to his Teen Titans group.

    I thought this original origin was pretty great.
    The Crisis cleaned up a lot of the confusion in the multiverse, but in the case of Donna Troy, it only made things more convoluted. Wonder Woman was being remade into a totally new character so they had to find ways to explain Wonder Girl without tying her in with Wonder Woman or the Amazons. So they gave her the "Titans of Myth" origin, changed her code name to Troia, tinkered with her powers, cut her hair, and gave her one of the ugliest costumes I can recall. Things only got worse from there.

    My favorite origin for Donna Troy is the one which some editor decided she wasn't going to get, the one she was going to share with Helena Kapatelis, of being one of many infant girls snatched from certain death by an Amazon, raised by them and then sent out into the world with no memory of her life on Themiscyra (or maybe somtimes some memory, because even Hera nods).
    Can't fool me, that was going to be a Donna Troy origin.

    • @seanpowell1661
      @seanpowell1661 Год назад +1

      That editor was George Perez! He tried so hard to separate Donna from the Amazons. Furthermore, by having Donna premiere years early before Diana was in my opinion, an insult to Marston's creation. In retrospect, Donna's post crisis origin didn't make sense. I know a huge number of comic fans referred to her late 90s origin as complicated. However, I applaud John Byrne her giving Donna back her Amazon connections and making her Diana's little sister again.

    Out of all the origins, this one seems the least confusing. For a modern version, I'd like to see Donna be given a sort of Wolverine-like mystery of who she is with all the angst that goes with it, maybe leading up to her deciding that "who I was doesn't matter. I know who I am."

  • @jimgillespie6109
    @jimgillespie6109 2 года назад +1

    The only real problem I have with this origin is Donna's age. At this point in time, Superboy was Earth 1's first super-hero. Sometime after he moved to Metropolis and started going by "Superman," Batman appeared, then Robin, then Wonder Woman. That means Robin was active when Donna was still a baby. Unless the Amazons aged her up on Paradise Island, the origin doesn't make sense time-wise.

    • @joshuaingobo1559
      @joshuaingobo1559 2 года назад +1

      I would assume that Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman were the same age as each other and that Robin and Donna Troy would be the same age as well. This means that Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman were seventeen years younger than Robin and Donna Troy. This also means that Superboy became Earth-One’s first superhero at the age of eight, Wonder Woman arrived to Man’s World and saved a two-year-old Donna Troy from a fire at the age of 19, Superboy became Superman at the age of 20, and Batman made his debut at the age of 22 and raised an eight-year-old Robin at the age of 25 in the pre-Crisis Earth-One continuity.

    My version (in my head) is that Donna's mother was a daughter of Antiope and an unnamed male, who disguised herself as a Dorothy Hinkley, and put Donna up for adoption to keep her away from the Bana-migdahl, who would groom her into something "Dorothy" didn't want for her. The rest of the origin remains intact, with the Themiscyrans using their technology (purple ray still?) To enhance her powers. That way she's still related to Hippolyte and Diana, and actually an Amazon, but unaware until whenever. Also, note how sexy Donna's costume was here before they decided to giver her deep cleavage.

    Best Origin is Spider-Man. Like everyone else, yes, if I never see it in a movie again, it'll be too soon, but it's still the best, story and pathos wise. My main problem with this origin is that Wonder Woman saved a Donna as a baby. This means that that Wonder Woman and thus all the other superheroes were operating at least 15 years before they got their sidekicks . While there’s nothing inherently wrong with that , it doesn’t really fit with canon. Not that Wonder girl was ever a sidekick to Wonder Woman . It was years before they were ever in a story together.

    things no one thinks about...When did Wonder Woman save her from the fire...comic book characters and aging....

    So Donna is homeless and possibly ill, and no one thinks to contact her big sister? If this was after the Amazons had left the Earth dimension, causing Wonder Woman to be depowered, Diana should have her Manhattan apartment and fashion boutique. Still, I always loved the Titans and the fact that they came off as actual friends, and not just co-workers JLA sometimes did. So I can definitely see them all rallying around Donna to help her as they did. Her origin was simple and effective. And rendered unworkable by the editorial decision that Wonder Woman was JUST arriving in Man's World for the first time in the modern age in the aftermath of Crisis on Infinite Earths. A pity.

      @@joshuaingobo1559 The Amazons, all except for Diana, who had chosen to stay behind, even though it meant giving up her powers. But she had set up a whole life for herself in New York, and her and Donna were all the other had at that point.

      @@RogueTwo Maybe Diana was busy in her own series at this point, and her and Donna Troy living in an apartment in New York would make a lot of sense. Also, it would mean that they would team up to fight something in Diana’s own book, much like Barry and Wally, Bruce and Dick, Oliver and Roy, and Arthur and Garth.

    I never liked the Donna Troy retcons. All they did was make things messier.

    I hate what's been done to female heroes today. I was a kid and read these books back in the late 1960s and always thought Donna was cute with her ponytail, but when she reinvented herself with a new look...Yoiks! Back then, women and girls were allowed to be considered sexy. It was just another of their superpowers. Come on. This was an All-boys club. And Donna more than brought the 'Strong' as well as the Feminine.
