Given all the parallels and contrasts between the two characters, I find it odd that one link that is so obvious is so overlooked. Their names. Diana is the Roman goddess that was identified with the Greek goddess Artemis.

I love how generally positive your videos feel, even when covering something you have strong criticism for like this. Like even when a comic has legitimate shortcomings, you still make it feel like a worthwhile journey from start to finish. That's so refreshing to see after scrolling past a seemingly endless sea of videos entitled "The Problem With X", "What Went Wrong With Y", and the like.
I still have a copy of Artemis Wonder woman somewhere, I don't remember how I got it just when I was a kid, and I remember a bit that at the time I like Artemis more than Wonder woman because she was angrier, and I got that. Of course I also had only read like one wonder woman comic
I thought Artemis was more interesting when they brought her back as a kind of death knight in Artemis: Requiem. Her career as Wonder Woman was doomed before it began.
The chest harness is virtually identical to the ones that Amazons wore back in the Golden age, so I always figured that she dug it out of an old closet back on Themiscira
Thx for doing this video. Artemis is my favourite other Wonder Woman. I think it's mainly because of the personality developed overtime in other books.
If I ever, by some miracle, become a comic book writer, Artemis is so a character I'd love to write for. A maligned and goofy start, but so much potential to do something completely different and fun with the Wonder Woman mythos. And Diana's biker outfit was awesome just for how silly it was.
I enjoy cheesecake, I think it's a good indication of an artist's style and talent and it's just also pleasing to the eye, though I like it to feel a little more naturalistic. In a weird way Artemis' outfit being so strategically ripped is somehow _more_ revealing than actual nudity, as you could argue the latter falls within the confines of 'heroic nudity', as you see in a lot of statues and paintings (as well as characters like Dr Manhattan). I must say I really do like this art, though. Artemis' crazy ponytail is very larger than life and dynamic.
This! Man, I had hair down to my backside for a couple years, and it got caught on everything, sat on, my fiance would roll over onto it in his sleep and pin me down...I can't even begin to understand how anyone could think it made sense to design a character with hair so long that it's often pooling on the ground. Especially if you're creating a character who's supposed to be a hard-ass warrior woman from a grim desert tribe of Amazons...I'd figure a character like that would have as short and practical a hairstyle as possible.
I liked Artemis because by using different tactics we as the reader could see why Diana was better in the role of Wonder Woman but DAMN Artemis's hair is the stuff legend in this book HA!
My fave Justice League (second to the Detroit team): Electric Blue Superman, Artemis Wonder Woman, Azreal Batman, Harpoon-Hand Aquaman, Kyle Rayner Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter acting more serious and looking more alien, and poor Wally, who was still the same because Barry left in the 80s so he wasn't the new guy but he didn't try his dark stealth suit until the Elite in the 2000s. Ah, the 90s.
Red Hood with Artemis & Bizarro (B-Zero version) has been one of my favorite reads in post-N52 Rebirth. People often dump on Lobdell but this has been a fun read.
I think it lasted 3 issues. She became Wonder Woman in one, tried (and failed) to fit in as Wonder Woman in the next (Diana also returned to the US to continue her identity as Diana Prince). In the third, Orana died, and Diana returned her body to Paradise Island.
Jane Foster as Thor was handled very differently than Artemis as Wonder Woman, save for the parental characterization. Odin was depicted as a complete and utter asshole, much like Hippolyta. Although, TBF, it was hardly Odin's first go-around as a completely unreasonable, horrible, abusive parent. Aside from that, there were many key differences. Thor had become unworthy through his own self-doubt, as opposed to anything Jane did. Jane was a long established character with a relatively rich (although often one-note) history, and she wasn't written as as a complete jerk, as opposed to Artemis.
The art was pretty depictive of Mike Deodato (or really, Mike Deodato studios)...he did a heck of a lot of female comic covers back in the 90s, especially the indie stuff. Outside of this, Thor sleeping with the Enchantress was one of his well known works.
I was reading Artemis as Wonder Woman when the books first came out. I thought she looked too much like Jim Lee's Zealot from early issues of WildCATS. I like Artemis's current iteration a lot more.
As a kid I loved this arc, but I wasn't a huge fan of Wonder Woman before this and this was exactly what I wanted at the time, a big shake up. It did feel like it lasted longerwhile it was happening but looking back it was a quick blip in WW's history. I will also always have a place in my heart for Diana's new look here, yeah it's dumb but it was also a fun era where Clark was made of electricity and Jean Paul was running around in a giant metallic batsuit. I'll always be nostalgic for the early 90's since that's when I started reading comics.
I really loved wonder women's pants and jacket look. Probably one of my favorite costumes her's atlough it's probably because I think biker outfits are cool.
I really enjoyed Artemis and her story following her stint as Wonder Woman. I'm probably in a minority but i always wondered whether an Artemis tv series could work with her taking over the WW mantle as Diana has been depowered. I think we need an update video on Artemis especially with her being the "Magic of the Amazons" what does this mean?!?!.
The Liefeld-esque art was getting very heavy there for a bit. Then you showed the cover for the beginning of the Byrne run and I wanted to run screaming back to the cake! Yeah, they could have toned it down a bit, but it was comics in the '90s, so there you are. And yeah, I'm there for Diana in bike shorts! Daaaaaaaaaaamn....😍
My introduction to the lovely Miss Sasha was on that nerdy channel that does all the top ten lists. I stopped watching that channel for a specific reason but I couldn't give up watching Sasha vids, so here I am. I always thought she was my favorite lister over there because, honestly, she's so damn fine. And that little hint of a lisp destroys me. But I digress. I just listened to this video while shaving my head, so I physically couldn't watch. I found myself laughing out loud several times, and I thought, "when it's safe to date again and I have the time, I need to find me a woman with this kinda funny."
Thor in the crop-top is definitely one of my "WTF?!" ones. Especially the times when it got so small he was basically just shirtless, and he had Mjolnir on a big-ass chain instead of the leather strap because...reasons? Plus, the weird headpiece thing instead of the winged helmet, that just looked like so many 90s characters (Gambit, Havok, so many Image characters, etc.) that I legit for a moment mistook him for a long-haired version of Havok that was for some reason not in an X-family comic, especially since that was one of those weird places when they also often took away his archaic dialect. Also, Hawkeye in the skirt...is not half so weird as Hawkeye in the lavender shirt with the neckline that plunged to his belt, and the shorts. Never actually read comics during that point in Avengers history, but man...that one was a little bit too disco-era, even compared to things like disco-collar Nightwing.
This was really interesting. I never got familiar with Artemis, but the context makes perfect sense since early ‘90s DC was all about shaking things up, killing Superman, replacing Batman, and apparently Wonder Woman isn’t immune to shock writing trends of the time. After this video, seems like Artemis at this time was the Faith to Diana’s Buffy. Pretty interesting. As for over/underrated comic book costume designs, I prefer Wolverine’s mid-2000s yellow and blue costume over either of his classic looks. Brown costume, Tiger Stripe costume...both great, but the redesign just hits right for me. Great video!
I love the 600th Wonder Wonder look without the jacket. I do wish there was a Superman suit that was like the "Day of the Krypton Man" issue 42 suit with a few changes. The red part blue, add the S and a red cape.
Tbh Biker Wonder Woman is one of the most restrained 90s redesigns and I kinda love it for a story arc costume. You know it'll always go back to normal, but it looks really cool for a short time.
Biker Shorts WW looked awesome. I'm with you on that. I'm also a big fan of Artemis but not sure how much of that is Mike Deodator Jr. Okay, good portion of it is. But I also liked her fiery persona as a foil for Diana. Happy that Artemis has come into her own and didn't disappear into the comic book dust racks.
You are a HOOT and this is a gem. Also, it shows a nice little tale behind the big front. I've ordered it hoping I will catch hell for reading it at my coffee shop.
I liked Diana's black outfit because I realized it was going to be temporary and that she would be back in the red, white, and blue eventually. Ditto for Artemis as Wonder Woman. What irked me was John Byrne portraying WW's bob hairdo as being a wig. I suspect it was because he wanted "his" Wonder Woman to have waist-length hair -- which is also probably why he changed her costume (from a pattern of stars on her shorts to two big stars on either side, her belt connected to the WW insignia, and that huge can-opener tiara he drew on her.). A look that I personally HATED at the time. I love John Byrne's art style, usually, but the first several issues of his run on WW were a lot to take.
I wasn’t really reading comics at the time. I was in full teenage boy “trying to be cool” mode which meant not admitting I loved comics. But I knew it happened and if I recall this was after Death of Superman and Knightfall so the whole “let’s reinvent the character as someone else” was getting old. At least Superman stayed dead and Batman was off recovering from a back break while their replacements got a little time to shine. Poor Artemis had to have Diana right there being like “we all know how this is gonna end”
I love New 52 Wonder Woman's outfit, and I am a fan of Superman Red/Blue fromt he 90s. Honestly, most "hated " outfits in comics, I tend to like. Especially if they are temporary looks that were never intended to be forever, even though fans freaked out. Also fun Artemis sidenote: I was lucky enought to get an action figure of Artemis as Wonder Woman back when Mattel was making the DC Universe figures.
is nice to show a new or diferent side of a hero that evolved so well since WW2 (actually WW1 according to movie) she was shown adapting to new times and keeping her immortality and ever young miracle (mostly all amazons are that way) I guess she showed some sane interest in mortal females in the movie to better fit in that world, or tried to
I love all of Diana's alternate costumes. In my ideal DC world, she could just open her closet and put on which ever iteration of her uniform that suits her mood on a given day. I really do love her original look best, though. I hope she returns to the classic outfit eventually. I love the Gal-centric take on her costume that our princess sports now, but do miss the iconic star studded trunks and the red and white striped pointed mid-calf boots. Silver age is my all time fav, when she featured an actual golden eagle on her bustier instead of the "kinda-birdish" double W she's had for the last few decades. Any time an artist does a costume design that makes it look more full and bird-like, my little heart goes pitter patter. Btw, Sash, I love your vids. You are fab and fun. We like a lot of the same characters, wish I were your friend, the convos would be so great. Thanks for keeping me so entertained.
At least Artemis got more of a chance with Wonder Woman, than Orana did in the Silver Age. I read this arc at the time and remember really liking it. Everything, but Hippolyta. The way she was written during this period made me really dislike her. But, I have to say, watching this video, took me right back to that time. Forgotten, but still much with me. Great video, as always
I liked Artemis back then when when she was introduced. To be fair I was 14 or so and my tastes still were developing and yet I like her to this day and I think she is overall underutilized as a character, in part because she is a interesting counter to Diana.
I know this whim is about Artemis, but I couldn’t help reminisce about this version of Diana used in the Amalgam Comics “Bullets and Bracelets,” teaming her with a mix of Punisher/Frank Castle and Steve Trevor. It made sense as Storm was using the Wonder Woman moniker in much the same way as Artemis was. Any time you visit the 90s, you simultaneously make me feel old and young again! Lol Thank you for the content!
I dig Diana with the leather jacket. I don't especially like the current look, only because jeans that tight can make for mobility issues, which is ironic since the one of the reasons for changing it was previous costumes being unrealistic. Could be some magical godly denim that allows for free range of movement though, so I'm not super phased by it. Though the classicist in me loves any time Wonder Woman is in a costume variant that takes inspiration from Greek battle armor. It's so badass!
Diana Biker and Storm Punk would be a decent crossover idea. The last time those two crossed over with each other it was a fight, and Storm won. I guess you could play off that rivalry and their dynamic.
As far as regretible costumes go, nothing beats boob window Sue Storm. You really should cover the in comic history of why it exists, because it gets crazy. There is probably a deep dive story behind the scenes as well, likely mad about 90's comics themes in general and splicing them into classic characters.
I miss the era of artists providing cheesecake for all. And yet I also really appreciated the artists that made the costumes look like actual clothing instead of just body paint over muscles in a constant state of flex. But I will never miss the tiny heads over huge bodies.
Now, I really liked the Biker Wonder Woman outfit; sure while not as function as armor or as greek as modern takes, I liked how it felt more...natural and utilitarian. Like she could be a normal person, but hop into action at a moment's notice.
Check out the story that inspired this one!

Wait... People dislike Storm's mohawk?
Not horrible, but just bad
@@BlUsKrEEm i think they did oringally but being storm was in the fit for almost a whole decade it grew on people and became one of the hightlights in storm history whereas diana fit was around for only an arc so it didnt really key with readers
I remember this. I was all about the Deodato art!
That “I’m not angry, just disappointed” from Sasha kind of hurt. So don’t want to disappoint Salt Mom.
I thought Artemis was more interesting when they brought her back as a kind of death knight in Artemis: Requiem. Her career as Wonder Woman was doomed before it began.
I so agree! I wished they continued down that road a little more. It's a area in DC separate from Diana and suited her professional soldier style.
The chest harness is virtually identical to the ones that Amazons wore back in the Golden age, so I always figured that she dug it out of an old closet back on Themiscira
These issues of Wonder Woman were brought to you by the Cheesecake Factory
Are those the new wait staff uniforms.....?
_you might remember the Cheesecake Factory in 90's Image comics, and Marvel's X-Men and the Swimsuit Special_
Good one
You should make a video on Nubia, Diania black sister.
so. nobody's going to bring up artemis facing off a giant mecha tentacle monster.
mkay.
This is my FAVORITE era of Wonder Woman (as well as all of DC Comics). I vastly prefer the Pre-52/Post-Crisis era. Thank you so much Sasha! 😄😄😄
Please do a video on Hippolyta's time as Wonder Woman!!
I prefer Artemis & read Red Hood & The Outlaws for her.
I hope sasha covers that version too, love to see her opinion on the dark trinity.
@Kingdrago101 Starfire was in the new 52 Red Hood & The Outlaws, not in Rebirth. Two different series.
@Kingdrago101 and the original comment I posted did not mention Starfire at all, only Artemis.
Thx for doing this video. Artemis is my favourite other Wonder Woman. I think it's mainly because of the personality developed overtime in other books.
The Wonder Woman Odyssey pants and jacket it 100% still my favorite outfit. I want it back!
Same its just got a balanced feel to it. Skin suits are just boring 😅
Never been a Wonder Woman's fan, but Mike Deodato is one of my favourite artists, if only I could have a fraction of his skills!
If I ever, by some miracle, become a comic book writer, Artemis is so a character I'd love to write for. A maligned and goofy start, but so much potential to do something completely different and fun with the Wonder Woman mythos.
And Diana's biker outfit was awesome just for how silly it was.
10:41 laughed out loud. The moment in my young life when I asked myself, "can there be too much cake?"
How often do you reckon Artemis stands on her ponytail every day?
Speaking of the Bhana tribe, has Dc done anything with Grace Choi post flashpoint?always felt she would be a great fit for the outlaws.
"...take back the uniform, Diana, I have dishonored it..." - "...um, that's alright, keep it...".
I hope she washed it first!
@@andrewgwilliam4831 - this channel is awash in bad jokes. I love Sasha but she will never do the awkward dance again.
4:48 Beta Ray Bill is probably one of the best examples
Red Hood with Artemis & Bizarro (B-Zero version) has been one of my favorite reads in post-N52 Rebirth. People often dump on Lobdell but this has been a fun read.
I like Artemis of Bana-Mighdall and I always will!!!
Remember when Dianna was stripped of the title in tthe70's
A redhead Wonder Woman.
I remember having those issues as a kid. Similar story line if I remember, but it lasted just a few issues.
@@rdbull5890 the 70's redhead Wonder Woman was a blip that lasted 2 issues.
I want a Video on Redhead Wonder Woman. BTW Her name was Orana.
I think it lasted 3 issues. She became Wonder Woman in one, tried (and failed) to fit in as Wonder Woman in the next (Diana also returned to the US to continue her identity as Diana Prince). In the third, Orana died, and Diana returned her body to Paradise Island.
This reminds me of Jane Foster Thor. I feel like that story was more endearing though
4:21 Sasha, you are so..... 'cheeky'.
3:39 Great job as queen there Hippolyta. "As long as Diana's alive whoever else is Wonder Woman can go die for all I care."
. . . they were trying to Image. Though I thought the best issue of the period was Biker Diana tangling with the Joker
I really loved wonder women's pants and jacket look. Probably one of my favorite costumes her's atlough it's probably because I think biker outfits are cool.
0:51 Discowing looks good actually. especially for the time. when the collar got closed up the colors worked nicely together.
Thanks for this!! I was just trying to explain who Artemis was to a friend the other day - so I sent him this video! Perfect timing!
Wow, that character looks a lot like Helga from Atlantis: The Lost Empire
Yeah, I can see that with her face/hair color.
I totally agree that George Peréz's run on Wonder Woman was the best. DC editorials really forgot about the words "consistencies" and "continuation"
Most of my "what the" costumes come from Marvel. Hawkeye in a skirt. Iron Man with a nose. Thor in a belly shirt. Good stuff.
Yea magical time
Thor in the crop-top is definitely one of my "WTF?!" ones.
@@Mokiefraggle did you see the cartoon Avengers United They Stand? That Hawkeye looked like a male dancer at a bar. Completely cringey.
They took a dig at the IMAGE COMICS guys but they also copied their art style too.
That was the style of the time. Everything was over the top. Today I'd argue everything is a lot cleaner and simpler
Man I could go for some cheese cake right now, to bad I just have Pepperidge farm cake...oh well.
I just LOVED ( and still do ! ) the Artwork ! If i don't like the Artwork i won't buy the comic
You should check out WW #250 and 251 of the original WW series for the origins of the red-haired Artemis. Reference: Orana.
I thought this was going to be a video about Cathy Lee Crosby.
00:35 "The harness for "reasons""
I can think off two right now lol
2:40 the best way to describe why people don’t like new people in famous identity’s that I have heard
I liked the 'Biker' look Diana, especially when they did Bullets and Bracelets for Amalgam and substituted a skull for the W's.
