People need to understand this was not a "performance" for accolades. This was a tribute from a grieving mother to her deceased daughter. She did a beautiful job especially considering the circumstances. I personally would have fallen apart. I think anyone looking to criticize need to just back away from the keyboard...
You can really hear the pain within I couldn’t even imagine but it’s obvious she could still sing but this wasn’t to entertain the audience this was for her daughter only we were just blessed to view it or if you were there see it
Do you understand the strength that it takes for a mother to have to perform a tribute for her daughter in front of hundreds of people, with a slideshow of their memories playing behind her & only a couple months after her child’s death? Bless you then and bless you now to the illustrious Cissy. Whitney? I love you forever 💜 hope to see you in Heaven some day baby girl💜
She put everything she had into that song. I loved it and would challenge any of you to sing at your child's funeral or tribute to their life and hit every note pitch perfect.
something about a older voice really puts the meaning of a gospel song on shine. . .im sure everyone felt her pain in that room. even if they honestly didnt give a damn about whitney or the tribute. this would have stopped everyone from playing with their phones.
people need to understand that this isn't supposed to be a great performance this is a grieving mother expressing what's in her heart stop posting hateful comments
Cissy killed that tribute I dnt know everyone else hearing. Hell you can't take people serious when they think Rhianna can sing better then Mariah Carey
Man, I couldn't even talk at my dad's funeral let alone sing. Imagine a mother singing this thinking about her dead daughter? Props to her for this performance. She has me bawling!
Simple minded people don't understand that in Gospel music it's not about what note you hit, or if you are sharp or flat, it's about how an audience is affected and moved, Cissy did just fine for her age and if this was in church people would be shouting in the aisles
Better talk! You can be sharp and flat a quarter of the song but if you are singing with FEELING AND DEEP SOUL, and the audience is moved, people are crying, people are dancing then thats what its all about! To me thats better than u singing in absolute perfect pitch and people are sitting there unmoved and untouched.
At 78 or 79 years of age, and having over 55 years of recording experience under her belt, Mother Cissy sang with all her heart and soul for her daughter and the crowd. God bless her forever, in Jesus name, amen.
I can see where whitney got her pipes from. what cissy has endured these last 3 years, first with her daughter and now her granddaughter, my heart breaks for her :(
I think Cissy did great on this tribute to Whitney. For all the people saying she sounds horrible and needs to sit down. She is in her 70s and still sounds great. For once would people stop being haters. Who post heartless comments about a performance that she put her heart into. That was here daughter and I personally think she went out there and killed it in a great way.
+longbranch11207 thanks it's so annoying when people say beyonce should have did the tribute instead of cissy. so basically someone who did not know Whitney personally should get to give a tribute over Whitney's mother who has known Whitney for her entire life.
Cameron Bassett beyonce who? give me a cracking sounding Cissy that is sinning from the heart over her loss of her only daughter instead of MISS KING BEY only do it for show and for the media. no thank you.Cissy at 80 years old is still holding her own against these younger chicks true talent
Some of you should hang your head in pure shame for all the negative comments about Mother Cissy Houston. Please believe and never get it twisted...this woman is a Gospel/Soul legend in her own right!! Yall better check her resume straight up. First of all she is a woman in her 80's and her voice and vigor is not as strong as it once was but trust her spirit in Faith has NEVER lost its power...please believe. And second of all she is a woman grieving the death of her daughter still. Some of yall bone heads will never experience what she has gone through. This was one of the most heart felt performances Ive ever watched...tears flowed down my face from the moment the music started playing..her heart was already on that stage before the performance began....so special ♥
Here I am 6yrs later and balling tears! If you have ever loved and lost and even survived life! This is a mother’s love and it’s indescribable unless you understand 💔💓
voice control is so difficult when you are singing for someone you've lost, blessing to Cissy for showing her love and strength for her beautiful talented daughter x
@dombon9783 where do you think Whitney Houston, got it from?! Mrs. Houston Cissy, that is was an amazing Soprano, who with and for the best of the best. Let's start with the Queen Of Soul Ms. Aretha L. Franklin's "Ain't No Way" the entire album. The long note being held in the background is non other than Mrs. Cissy Houston. So, paying tribute to only daughter at her age is absolutely beautiful considering the circumstances.
She did the impossible. In her 70s singing one of the hardest songs ever and at her daughters funeral who was also a singer. She is truly the definition of a strong woman. Love you Cissy.
I have always loved this song but this rendition takes me straight to heaven. I guess it is all about the occasion and emotions of losing your only daughter. Thanks Ms. Houston.
Actually uneishab I can & have been since I was 3. You're an idiot to call someone evil for having an opinion (which last I checked I was entitled to) GTFOH!!
I read her book. Miss Houston has the type of strength that anyone should hope to have... She taught and loved her daughter all the way, all the time and with everything she had. There's nothing she could have done more. Whitney was her own person in the end, like we all are.. What a beautiful tribute this is...
The vibrato is wide, but hell, she is still phenomenal even before you take into account the nature of the occasion. Cissy is so underrated. She is one of the greatest singers in the history of recorded music.
Fitting she sang this...As she did with Elvis. Never knew her power and range. That God-Given talent trickled down and we all were blessed with it. Glorious.
Bullshit. You don't have to sound like if you're still 20, But you at least have to be in tune. You can't be so off key. Just don't sing then. I don't care if she's old, the passion and soul are totally there, but she's out of tune anyway. Check out Shirley Bassey at the Oscars. Magnificent.
+Francesco Amedei Oh I'm sorry if your daughter died and you had to sing an entire tribute infront of millions of people on live tv and its a SONG SHE WROTE, how the hell would you sound.
+Francesco Amedei I hear you exactly what you mean. No shade, but I couldn't even watch the whole performance and its not because it was emotional. It was because she is out of key. She is off-key... she is completely out of key. #havemercy #noshade
+Just Love It was not off-key. You are the one who is way off. Her voice was a little shaky because she was singing to her daughter who recently died. If you had a heart you would have taken that into consideration and kept your ignorant, negative comments to yourself. Some of us with hearts felt the emotion in her voice. This song nearly brought me to tears because as a mother of three daughters I don't want to even think about having to bury one. I certainly wouldn't be able to sing as well as she did.
Moe: I saw yr comment, and thought 'gosh he must be a very emotional person' until I listened to it, and SAID THE EXACT SAME THING!!!! My eyes too got watery….. good post man. OMG! That was beautiful. I don't know if it is just me or not, but I could HEAR Whitney's voice (meaning, the part of her momma's voice that was passed along to her), and it nearly broke me down!!!
Will Maybe its crazy cause i am actually a very emotional person sometime, i get in my emotional moods where i just want to listen to slow songs. Being a cancer i tell you lol but thanks
2021 and this still gives me goosebumps. I watched my grandma bury my mom, my uncles literally had to carry her up to the casket. I hope I never have to experience the pain of burying a child.
Damn! I never knew Cissy sounded like that! Her voice alone, the power of it, is what finally lifted her daughter up into the sky and into Heaven. Whitney is NOW in a much better place, y'all. Ms. Houston now. Ms. Houston forever.
WOW Ms Cissy's voice is powerful & joyful and Heavenly ... wow i got goose bumps all over me 🌹🕊️❤️💜 Only the Holy Spirit gives a powerful voice like hers - age never matters with the power of God inside ✨

Those who are negative, I challenge you to get up on a stage in your eighties and sang for your child who has just died. I cried, because I felt the hurt, the lost, the emptiness. Thank you, Cissy! OMG was that not just heart wrenching when she said "This is for you Nip!" I am right there with you, she had me in tears right at that moment. So happy there are people like you out there still, that have a heart.
Sissy is an icon singing to her only baby girl that has left this world and her baby's daughter too. The pain is felt in her voice, she is without merit or position just running notes so her girls hear her. God bless you Whitney and Bobbie Christina. Thank you for the music and for all it's glory, we did not live without it because of Whitney Houston.
I had no idea how good this lady was, her soprano backup for so many, is absolutely gorgeous, her range, control, inflection, true perfection.. As a soprano, I have always been frustrated, that the only way to make a living outside of Opera, for those who's best voice is in the upper range, were and still are forced to sing in alto range, which often, to me sounds more like shouting. As a young women I was regularly relegated to ohs and ahs rather than words, When I found a small group where I got to sing WORDS, I was thrilled. Still singing today at 82, and described as the lady who sings in the stratosphere. Now I just smile, the joy of making music is enough.
I am seeing comments about this being a bad performance and I just know those of you saying this have NO KNOWLEDGE about singing at all. She did AMAZING!!! Not to mention being able to sing this while your child lay dead. Whew lord!! Bless this woman and those REMARKABLE pipes of hers.
Yes God, Praise Him anyhow! It gives me great joy to see her in this time pay tribute to her child Whitney (Nippy) Houston. May God continue to bless Cissy, Bobbi Kristina, Donnie and evryone whom embraced Whitney for who she was a True Iconic Voice.
Just imagine a mother doing everything she could to try and intervene and safe her daughter. Now imagine a daughter that has free will as we all do! This many years later! Everyone that is saying anything about Cissy’s voice she gave up singing long ago, but sang her heart out for her baby girl. Omg real love and pain in those pipes. Definitely where Whitney got it from❤ and if you haven’t heard Cissy in her prime you are definitely sleeping on her!
Just got thru watching f the umpteenth time. Cry everytime. The words to this song came with so much meaning and sadness. Till today, I still cnt watch any of Whitney's docs or videos. Do miss this true diva, terribly. RIP
It’s 2020 and listening to her sing this still affects me as if it’s my first time hearing it. If this doesn’t move you, something is seriously wrong with your brain’s limbic system!😥
How could anyone give this a thumbs down? This woman is grieving for her daughter and to get up and sing and give it her all body and soul that's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen!!!

She felt that she was going to loose her granddaughter on the show ... when they had that party for cissy n Bobbie kept walking away

No Mother Should Not Buried Their Children. A Mother's Love Runs Deep For Her Children.
Cissy you were AMAZING!!! Whitney inherited the gift of music from her mom. God bless!!
Such a strong woman. I just cried.
Goodness that was awesome!!!!!!!
Beautiful!👏🏾👏🏿👏🏽👏🏼😥
This heavy! WHEW, what a moment in Music.
that was the most honest pure performance i have ever seen from anybody in the music world! a mother paying tribute too her child is real x
THOSE VOCALS THOUGH, WOW, IM SHOOK!
One of hardest nights ever. I remember this as if it were yesterday. We cried like never before! Mrs. Cissy Houston was a Pilar of strength ❤️🙏😭😭
Oh my god this live is so emotional I cry every time she is so perfect and divine.
I refuse to believe there was a dry eye in the audience. Here I am 11 years later getting teary eyed.
