  • We loved Albania so much in 2022 we had to return in 2023 to meet up with Patrick Ryan. In this episode we dive some epic cave structures looking for grouper and take a cheeky trip across the border to Greece for a sunset stalk.
    If you're new to the channel, my wife Hannah and I are driving from London in the UK to Bodrum in Türkiye, diving all the way through! We'd love you to join along for the adventure so please consider subscribing to make sure you don't miss out on future episodes.

    Hi Daniel, could you add a section in your videos where you talk a bit about the legislation about spearfishing of the places/ countries you dive? I think it would be really nice for people considering to go for spearfishing abroad. Anyway we really enjoy your video, much love from Greece ❤

      Great suggestion! I generally talk about it when I'm in a a place that needs a license or they have forbidden fish and techniques. Maybe I'll do a whole video for most of Europe.

    Greetings from Greece! A thorough search with a torch of the slit at 1.53 might have yielded a bigger corvina and/or some goldbloch grouper (stira). Stiras (as well as corvinas) love this kind of morphology in the bottom especially in silty waters and frequently share holes together.

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  8 месяцев назад +2

      Kalimera! I had a really good look in there with the 60cm gun later in the day. It wasn't that deep, around 8-9m so suspect the fish don't reside there as often. I was really hoping for a white grouper with the silty bottom but have never seen one in Albania. Only in Rhodes but with very similar bottom structure.

    3:15 That's a Giant Tun (Tonna Galea) they used to be abundant in the Mediterranean but tour enterprises killed them for their shells to sell them as souvenir especially in Malta. Usually they keep the corals and water clean and are a good sign of a healthy environment, however they are poisonous if consumed. @Daniel Mann.
    They are also usually buried under the sand floor and only leave a small hole at the center, or they are half covered and look like a clay vase.

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  8 месяцев назад +1

      Great information! I thought it was unusual to see such a large shell in a fairly touristic and populated area. I guess being poisonous to eat they are somewhat less desirable.

    In one of the previous episodes, you mentioned that you would also be spearfishing in Bulgaria on the Black Sea. I only hope you had your chances because the Black Sea can be problematic regarding weather, visibility, and temperatures.

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  8 месяцев назад +2

      Yes there will be a video from the Black Sea. It was an incredible dive that we had. Lots of fish, 10m visibility, 20°C water and flat calm seas. I have another video from Albania and two from Türkiye before that video though.

  • @morganames8142
    @morganames8142 7 месяцев назад

    Daniel, (1) at 17 seconds into your video, you have a line attached to a weight belt-mounted loop on the middle of your back. Do you *usually* wear this line attached to your buoy? What's the decision-making that you employ as to whether to attach the surface support line and have to tow it around with you or rather to have the surface support station anchored? Is it just that you don't want to have to be retrieving the anchor (lifting the 2 - 3 kg weight through the water column) in order to reposition it for your next drop and then have to make surface swims from your ascent point back to the buoy? Does this line present an issue with fouling your freediving fins that you have to observe? Visibility looks incredible!!! (2) Interested in why -- if you knew you'd be dropping on rock formations ... given your previous experience here -- you, initially, would choose your longer speargun only to subsequently recognize the 60cm gun was more appropriate? Is your thinking that perhaps there just might be a target out-in-the-blue that would require increased range?? LOVE your body of work, Mate!!!!

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  7 месяцев назад

      I have the drop weight on my belt on the swim out as it’s easier to move the speargun around instead of it being attached to that. I don’t normally fish like this but as mentioned it was just a few warm up dives before we got to the place we wanted to dive, I then anchored the float.
      The first drop on a place has the potential to find a large grouper out of a hole, a dentex or amberjack. Thats why I used the larger roller first. If you see nothing then looking in holes is the next strategy. It’s hard to do it the other way around because if you drop first with a 60cm gun and see a dentex, very difficult to shoot it.

  • @ASGundogs
    @ASGundogs 8 месяцев назад

    Great vid. Still think there's a niche for a video about how to plan a dive from scratch inc tides, currents, navionics etc etc. I'm sure you have contacts but you seem to be able to dive somewhere abroad that you're visited for the first time more confidently than I can dive the beach I've fished for 30 years 🤣

    Having dived that coast Dan, I would say on a clear viz day you might have seen that Bream from miles away and killed it with a long ambush but you would not have had a chance to shoot it just swimming along at 3 meters water as you were. That was the viz working in your favor ... or maybe "in your favor"... but you know what I am saying... Nice images once again. My only gripe, let us know in advance next time :)

    12:00 I can hear Greek people talking in the distance! Lots of people in south Albania are actually of Greek origin. By the way, in Greece, you are not allowed to use light for spearfishing. It is illegal to even have a torch in your backpack when you are going for spearfishing!

    Hi Daniel. Great video as always. I’m curious, do you still use the DJI Osmo Action 3? The shots are so crisp. I have bad experience with the Action 3 being unsharp and poor quality.
    /Mads

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  8 месяцев назад

      Hi there, yes I’ve been using the Osmo action for all my POV stuff since spring last year. I don’t actually have a GoPro anymore (lost my hero 10 in spring!). I prefer the reliability of the Osmo action 3 and the battery life is way better. Never had a single issue with it to be honest. Only gripe is the white balance changes underwater as it doesn’t have a native white balance setting like the GoPros. Not enough to change back though. I think the unsharp images have been solved with firmware. Mine has always been great for me. I’ll probably get an action 4 at some stage.

    How do you deal with fishing licences in the countries you go. I am planning to do a trip soon. Do you just pay the yearly fee or is there a special permit?

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  8 месяцев назад

      Depends on the country. There isn’t a license in Albania or Greece. Denmark it’s an online thing and pretty cheap for the year. Spain is a bit of a mission but also valid for a year or two depending on the municipality. Croatia it’s an online one from a day to a week for visitors (not that cheap). Portugal is an online thing and I believe you pick a week or a month. Not the easiest online system. I should probably do a video on it all!

    which brand and model is your 60cm gun? And when do you use the trident vs the normal spear?

      This one was just an Omer cayman. I now have a Meandros to match my other smaller railguns. Depending on the fish I’m going for but I’d say the single point in more useful all round.

    Well done my friend. But I told the previous time that you came in Albania to tell me that you were coming so I would give some places names to dive and in the first weeks of October the sea was great everywhere in Albania. Even in the Adriatic sea where I am was wonderful, lots of bluefish, gilthead seabream and groupers even in the shallow.

    How come Greece authority(¿?) is not sending fines to your goodself as a UK or EU citizen after this ?
    while they do send high tickets to even Turkish celebrities diving and even without shooting a fish after they return home to Bodrum..
    Lucky you again no Turkish authority will turn your nice spearfishing holiday into a bitter experience afterwards.. I watch people coming and diving near Kas even at night time or at dawn from Gr islands or boats anchored there and again noone bothering noone here..
    Can you comment on this as a popular youtuber about this unfair policy act against our travelling spearos pls?

      Last time I was in Australia it was hard to get excited by some of the fish I was shooting. Even things like a 6kg bar cheek trout, red emperor, 2kg grassy emperors. They didn’t present a huge challenge. I was however stoked on shooting a 13.5kg barramundi. Possibly due to nostalgic reasons but you do have to work for those things in the murk.

    How do you get your color grading so good? 🥹 Feel like my color grades fall flat compared to yours. Great stuff!

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  8 месяцев назад +1

      On the underwater footage or the topside footage? Underwater stuff I always use da Vinci resolve to grade, it’s got no rivals when it comes to RGB controls and effects. For the topside stuff I’m using a Sony A7S3 and just grade that in premiere pro with a Sony LUT and then some tweaks.

    • @WildCaughtOutdoors
      @WildCaughtOutdoors 8 месяцев назад

      @@DanielMann I need to learn da Vinci, I’m really happy using premiere but you are right when it comes to color. What Sony LUT do you use if you don’t mind me asking? I just picked up the FX3 to start my career in video production

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  8 месяцев назад

      @WildCaughtOutdoors I use the standard slog3 cine to rec 709 LUT from the official Sony website. Then I have a creative one I add over the top. FX3 is a great camera. Basically the same as the A7S3 - can’t beat that full frame look.
