I have noticed the same thing. Some pictures of the nuclear football show a relatively traditional size briefcase, while others show cases of various sizes and materials. Some appeared to be metal and others appear to be leather. Some are relatively small and others are huge. Why is that so??

thats a misconception. what is in that briefcase is comms and books. that comms in the case link the president directly to the pentagon, peoc, and the joint chiefs. possible norad too. then the books in there contain bunker locations and strategic plans for a nuclear strike. there is no button its a lot of codes and verification that the president and the people launching are doing. im probably missing a few things but thats what i can remember from research. But in short there is no physical button to launch missiles
