There was a blizzard in SW Virginia in 1996. The snow near Roanoke, VA was up to our mailbox. It lasted a good while and the snow froze hard and the kids ice skated on the snow in the front yard! 😄
We had weather like this in the 1970s . They called it a mini ice age. We had single digits and high winds every winter and a snow storm would happen often but one year we got hit with a big one and it was a 3 day blizzard. Philadelphia Pennsylvania was shut down and in place for a long time . Even in the late spring there was still remains of the snow that we had .
It’s 50/50. I’ve seen lots of videos say we would have warmer and dryer weather all winter long here in NC but it’s been the coldest winter we’ve had in 3-5 years. Also, lots of precipitation in December for us.
It has not been the coldest winter in 3-5 years in NC. It’s been pretty mild , almost exactly the same as the last 5 years. Two years ago it was -10 at the end of December. The coldest day so far has been 16-17 degrees. So try again buddy
@@dmcrisp I’ll just never understand why people feel the need to be rude and hateful to someone they disagree with. Hopefully you learn to be respectful to others before someone puts you in your respective place. This is weather, not a sports debate.
There seems to be a pretty strong consensus on this upcoming pattern. Seems to be a matter of the severity and not whether or not it's going to happen. It's hopefully just a blip in an otherwise fairly mild winter. The big cold that hit a couple of years ago was supposed to be long lasting. It was a blip.
Will never forget the GFS predicting a Southern Slider storm about 3 or 4 years ago. Everyone brushed it off as 1 to 3 inches of snow. We saw the warnings while sitting at brunch in t-shirts, 75 degrees and rainy. The storm parked itself over Central VA from Richmond up to Orange and Louisa counties and was devastating. We didn't have power for 2 weeks. I always plan for a hammering if the GFS says it's gonna miss us in winter after that storm lol
Northeast has been back and forth all month with temperatures, typically in 4-7 day passages of low or high. 7 low, 4 high, 4 low, 5 high, 6 low, 5 high.
Noaa updates the 6-10 and 8-14 everyday between 1pm and 2pm eastern. The 3-4 week is only updated on Friday at the same time of day. Monthly outlooks are out the first Thursday after the 15th and the last day of the month.
I’ve lived outside of Charlotte most of my life. We seen one good snow in like 8 years. We got a very small dusting for one night a few weeks ago, when we haven’t seen a flake in 2 years.
Ugg I feel so torn. I live in western NC, I love snow, we usually get a good amount each winter but we have had basically no snow for the last two-3 winters. My 6-year-old doesn't remember snow that is more than a light dusting, they are growing up so fast. I would love a good 6 inches for my kids to play in and make memories in. HOWEVER we were just devastated by Hurricane Helene and we still have well over 1000 people without permanent housing. Cold that low could kill more people. Also, we were without water for 55 days this fall and last time we had -2 temperatures city water pipes broke and we were all without water for a week. Praying the extremes of this forecast don't play out.
Since you have absolutely no control over the weather, I'd say it's okay to enjoy it. I don't know what it's like there right now but maybe if you have outbuildings or a barn or something, you could offer it as temporary shelter? But yes, hopefully the extremes don't play out.
So, you know, the Cincinnati Bengal's hold the record for the coldest game in the NFL by windchill, it was back on January 10th, 1982, for the AFC Championship game, the actual air temperature was -9 with a windchill of -59
People seem to be taking this too lightly. Certainly we hope for the best, but people that are not prepared could die. Hope some people will take this seriously.

Agreed that the signals for cold weather in eastern US are there, but to talk about specific to a medium range forecast over 10 days out is just not good meteorology. Models this time of year frequently show large coastal storms forming 10 + days out, but infrequently come to fruition.
