Very well put together Dan, I really enjoyed the video - and of course the experience that you furnished me with. It has given to me a whole new perspective of sim racing, especially now when I'm joining in races with drivers that have this similar set-up. Absolutely fantastic. NB I will try and damp down saying 'Oh Sh*t' too !
There was no way I could have let you come and visit for a few weeks and _not_ fire up the Oculus at some point 😆 although in hindsight I should have prepared another silly sticker for the front for maximum authenticity! I'm so glad you were able to enjoy it without feeling nauseous as well, that was my biggest worry as some people need to stop after a few minutes but you were an absolute trooper. I know you said you were tired at the end of this but I've got no doubt we could have kept on trying out car/track combos all night if it wasn't for dinner being ready 😉 better start making a list of everything you want to try out for the next time you manage to make it over to Australia! 🧡
I love these “VR virgin” videos. The reaction to VR that Dan’s dad had is priceless. I’ve been racing in VR for almost four years, so I’m quite used to it. Sometimes I have to just sit and really remind myself of how amazing this technology is. A couple of years ago I added some some small bass shakers to my setup and that took immersion to a whole new level of mind blowing. I’m probably around the same age as Dan’s dad, so I’ve seen all the stages of gaming and simulation. I never could have imagined that I would ever see the incredible experiences that technology like VR and force feedback devices can bring today. Great video!
It's easy to forget how incredible things are at the moment with full wheel/pedal sets and virtual reality, I often have to remind myself too! When you're using this technology for a specific purpose, such as nailing the perfect lap or chasing someone down for position, you take it for granted and get lost in the moment...as opposed to an experience which is purely for enjoyment such as flying around exploring in Google Earth VR. So many of my sim racing memories feel like 'real' memories, so to speak, because it felt like I was actually _there_ ... That was probably the best thing about having my Dad go through this experience right next to me, it reminded me very clearly what it felt like to be trying VR for the first time and rekindled that excitement all over again. Also, you're not the first person to mention bass shakers here 🤔 I'm seriously considering them now.
@@DDFRacer I would definitely consider adding shakers. I have a very basic DIY setup with two shakers tucked into a memory foam seat cushion and two more shakers under my pedal plate all hooked up to two Nobsound Mini amplifiers. Even this simple setup gives the impression of the road texture and curbs and bumps. It really feels like the I’m moving over the road. I control it with the Simhub software. I can only imagine how the bigger Buttkicker shakers feel hooked up to all four corners of the rig.
@@vt6020 how much noise do these things make? Most of my racing is done at odd times of the day thanks to Australian timezone conversions so the majority of my rig time is when my wife and little kiddo are sleeping. Just something I'm a little conscious of 👍
I did actually mention that combo to him and we wondered what it would be like using a VR headset with a controller. I mean, sure, you still have the depth perception and ability to look around but one of the amazing things about sim racing that you hardly get with anything else is the peripherals too. I mean, with Skyrim VR it's not like you can go sneaking around with an _actual_ bow and arrow, yet here we are driving around the Nordschleife using a wheel and pedals 😉
Awesome to see his reaction & for you to share such a special moment with us. This could send him down the simracing rabbit hole. Wheel pedals & VR what have you done lol .
It was an absolute pleasure to be able to share this mate, although I wish the mics hadn't stuffed up so much throughout! You only get one chance to record a video like this, it's not like I can just re-start and say "okay, can you pretend to be amazed again please Dad?" 😂
I knew my Dad would love it, although him being on the other side of the world has always been a bit of a minor difficulty 😅. I've tried to get my wife on the rig a few times and, apart from a few rare minutes here and there, she doesn't really seem too interested. I can't wait until my daughter grows up a bit though and her legs can reach the pedals 😉 that's when the fun really begins.
That was awesome to watch. One of the best father son moments I've ever witnessed. The mid-session interview was that of an experienced journalist interviewing the subject of an event. Absolutely loved pop's descriptive explanation and reaction to the whole experience. I'm willing to bet he'll be back before five years' time is up! As always, another great video Dan! Love you work 😁
He came across so well, right? I could have spent days working on a script of what it's like to go sim racing in VR to try and explain it to those who've never tried it before...but he absolutely nailed it in one take, completely off the cuff 😁 what a legend.
No worries at all John, I couldn't wait to get this one edited and shared! I couldn't stop smiling the whole time he was in the headset and also the whole time I was going through the footage to make this video too 😁 something truly special that I'm sure both of us will never forget!
Man if you're old fella started streaming I'd watch all day. Fanatec need to get on board with this and help him out. Be a great advert for them. From pad to top SIM racer.
He does have his own channel already 😉 although he doesn't have a webcam going back home in the UK and mostly streams random races here and there. You can find his channel here if you want to check him out 👍 ruclips.net/channel/UCL80ovKetNnecVha_ukqgFw
Another awesome Dad video, really loved watching it! Apart from the bliss seeing you both having so much fun together, it also reminded me how my first VR sessions amazed me as well. It took me 4 weeks though, to get the first strong nausea down to just a little dizzy when driving backwards. JD got used to the headset extremely fast and drove with it like he does it all the time, that was impressive. I totally agree on what you both said about the driving in VR, it is just on another level of reality and totally changes the way you sim drive. From finding and learning braking and turning markers on monitor, to "you're in a car on a race track, now just effing drive". : D
Before I first got my VR headset all those years ago I would binge watch people trying VR for the first time or sim racing using a headset, I was obsessed. I wasn't in a position to be able to afford it having just moved to Australia and needed to find a job, save up for a whole new PC etc, so I'd get my fix through watching others. Now that I've been using VR for several years, I watch those videos to remind myself of that novelty feeling again 😁 how amazing it was to experience it for the first time with fresh eyes...so to be able to give my Dad the opportunity and sit right next to him while he went through those experiences for the first time was just amazing! His words to describe how it felt were just perfect 👌
It was great fun to watch and hang out with you guys, even a brief appearance by young Miss Finney; nice way to start a Sunday. Is it possible to use a controller in VR? Thanks for letting me be part of the fun Dan and JDF!
Maybe in a few years we could re-do this video but with three generations 😉 although little mini-Finney's legs will need to get a little bit longer first so she can reach the pedals. About the controller, it's definitely possible to use one in VR 👍 one of my favourite ways to relax outside of sim racing is to play some Skyrim VR and that works great, although it did take a little getting used to the motion sickness at first which surprised me. I never get that feeling when sim racing but moving a character around in tight confined spaces and also rotating the view can be very off-putting at first 😬
Glad you enjoyed the video and thank you also! I always have to go back and watch this again whenever someone comments on it for the first time in a while 😁
I think he handled the jumps surprisingly well and was right on pace, a natural! Although I'm not sure how he's going with the withdrawal symptoms 😉 like he said, it's extremely addictive and no doubt if he had the space back home in the UK he'd have the full rig including VR headset. And yep, my Mum would probably never see him again too 😂
Good vibes... really enjoyed watching this. So nice to see the first VR experience of someone. That makes you remember how you felt yourself when trying for the first time. Now I'm taking it for granted after a few years in VR But its truly something different from monitor.
I remember watching your first VR reaction video and absolutely loving it 😎 I believe it was at the Nordschleife too if I remember correctly? There's just something special about seeing someone experience it for themselves, no amount of describing what VR is like actually prepares you for when you first put the headset on. Like my Dad said "oh sh*t, oh wow, oh my god!" 🤣
Sorry to disappoint you mate 😅 no transducers on the rig. It's something that has been recommended to me *several* times but I'm a bit wary of the noise it would generate since my sim racing room isn't particularly sound proofed and most of my racing tends to happen at odd times (thanks Australian timezone conversions 👍) when my wife and little kiddo are asleep.
He's been doing sim racing on a controller for several years now so he's pretty familiar with all the basics of how the cars handle, racing lines, strategy, tyre/fuel management etc. It is pretty impressive how quickly he adapted to the rig though 👀 I'd love it if he could come visit for a few months so he could _really_ get some practice laps under his belt and we could get stuck into something like sharing a car for an enduro.
Sure did! No nausea and right on the pace, I was well impressed. If it wasn't for dinner being ready I probably would have needed a crowbar to remove him from the rig 😉
Really great video Dan. Loved seeing the obvious bond between you guys. I’ll never forget my first time sat in a pretend race car in VR… it was really mind blowing and something you can’t appreciate until you’ve done it.
No amount of explanation beforehand or trying to convey the experience can prepare you for the first time you actually put the headset on and see it for yourself. Before I got my VR headset all those many years ago I would binge watch other people's videos to get a feel for it and yeah, it was nothing like I was expecting. It was so much better than I could have ever imagined 😁
Ah your dad's accent reminds me of home Dan. Good video. A mate got me really interested in getting VR and after a load of research I'm looking at the CV1 just to guarantee good performance on my 6700xt. Was surprised to see that's the headset you use. I take that as a recommendation having seen you race. Good enough for you, it's plenty for me.
Thanks mate, always nice to see a comment pop up on this and remind me of the video 😁 I usually go back and watch it again myself. I miss my Dad, haven't been able to get him back over to Australia since recording this and haven't had the chance to go and visit him either, so this is a good way to remember what it's like and get a big smile on my face between Skype sessions. About the VR headset! If you can grab yourself a 2nd hand CV1 and it's in decent condition then it's a really good entry point mate 👍 mine is still going strong after all these years and I've got no complaints. Recently had the opportunity to try out a friend's Varjo Aero which is top of the range and much newer...and also not as much of a step forward as I was expecting to be honest. Yeah it was much clearer but there was some odd chromatic aberration happening and I couldn't bump the graphics settings as high, was definitely much more of a strain on the PC.
Only time I’ve ever felt nausea in a vr headset is when reversing, because my brain was anticipating the weight transfer in my body going from backward to forward momentum and when it didn’t happen I had that slight turn of stomach.
It's quite odd to hear this being a common thing as I've never really experienced the reversing nausea thing before 🤔 even barrel rolling it in DIRT Rally 2.0 seems to be fine. However, that said, I do get a bit of a funny feeling in my head/stomach in the first few minutes of first person games such as Alien Isolation and Skyrim VR but that tends to settle down...unless I fall from a height 😅 that is an absolutely horrible feeling.
wow what a video that is the best why to choose VR video i have seen, JD gave a unbiased genuine review of the first time use. Its making me reach for the credit card 😆it must be the only reason Tobias is faster than me 😂His enthusiasm for simracing reminds me why i love it too and i miss the hours we spent discussing cars and racing, shame real life gets in the way some times. JD i think its worth the risk of the wifes wrath if you get yourself a headset. You cant see or hear her when your in VR😉 Dan fantastic video all round top job
Thanks for the kind words mate, glad you enjoyed the video and yeah, I was super impressed with how well he adapted to using the headset and wheel/pedals. Not only that, but how he managed to put that feeling into words better than I ever could have imagined or scripted 😁 great work Dad!
Would like to see @JDFdoggo, who has mastered driving on a controller, drive VR on a controller. To know what that combo is like. Also, if he is ever on the east coast of the US, he has an open invitation to to visit and fly in my sim using VR.
We talked about the VR and controller combo off-recording and said how it might be good for spatial awareness and depth perception, but you'd still be missing the physical connection of a wheel and pedals that really cements the immersion/illusion in your brain that you're _actually_ driving a car. Would be interesting though 🤔 might have to see what turns up at the Finney Sr household this Christmas...
great video, I'm surprised how he didn't got sick!! Not long ago I let my cousin try my wheel+VR (Quest2) for a ride, and he couldn't do more than 2 minutes, he almost threw up 😂 your dad is tough! cheers Dan & Dad
Wish he would of tryed AMS2,tryed that in VR last year was mind blowing...Really like his general thought's on it makes really good points awsome dad and dan :D
Yeah that would have been the next thing we would have tried but sadly we ran out of time for some AMS2, maybe next time 😉 although who knows what advances there'll be in the next few years!
Same here, I would have loved to have loaded up AMS2 for him as well but sadly we ran out of time and never got around to getting back in the rig again before he had to fly back home to the UK. It's definitely on the list for next time whenever he can make it out to Australia 😉 PS. if you're _offering_ a Reverb G2 then tell me where to sign up 😆 I'll gladly take that off your hands for you.
I really want to get my Dad a VR headset. But I don't know where to start with it as I've never used one myself. He loves Skyrim and flight SIM games like ace combat. Any recommendations?
I've been using an Oculus Rift CV1 for nearly 6 years and couldn't recommend it highly enough...the only problem is that the CV1 model is now discontinued 😥 and in terms of newer models, nothing has really caught my eye (pun intended). I would suggest having a look around on Reddit, various forums, other sim racers etc for some advice on this one mate as I can't really give you a decent suggestion unfortunately having never used anything apart from this CV1.
I will admit there is a bit of a resemblance there, but I honestly don't ever remember my Dad drinking a cup of tea in my life 🤔 so surely it can't be...
Ha yeah 🤣 he caught me off guard a few times when I was doing the editing. Safe to say he has the same kind of reaction when he hears the Tuesday Thunder AUSNZ voice comms in full effect.
I can take no responsibility for any financial expenditure you may incur due to watching this video Mark 😅 although I've got no doubt that, should you decide to pull the pin, you'll love it. Especially for rally! VR was a literal game changer when it came to that, it makes it so much easier to feel which direction the car is going in and how much it's actually sliding.
Yeah he's not too shabby, right? Especially considering he usually does all of his sim racing on a beat up old Xbox controller 😉 I was amazed how quickly he adapted to using not only a wheel and pedals, but the VR headset too.
Cheers Ben, was an absolute pleasure to put this one together. Due to being on opposite ends of the world now I don't get to see my Dad very often, so an experience like this is something truly special I'll treasure forever. Glad I could share it 👍
So that's super cool man! I'm a 61-year-old dad that built his rig and learned about VR. I mentioned it in my reveal video that you can watch if you like.. ruclips.net/video/ZoKrwHxF6Io/видео.html One thing I really noticed is since in VR the car is around you all the movements are more intuitive from the body roll and such. It's something I never heard anybody speak of I may not be describing it clearly. But with that movement around you your body seems to understand the car movement better. That's just something I observe but I've never heard anybody else speak of I don't know if you noticed that?
I've definitely noticed that, especially when rallying! Being able to keep your head stable and point it in the direction you want to go in, and then feel the car rotating/rolling around you is so incredibly useful that I can't go back to rallying without VR now, I'm absolutely hopeless as it feels like I have no clues what the car is doing at all.
@@DDFRacer Dirt Rally 2 is definitely a beneficiary of VR goodness. I picked up WRC Legends and then realized it's not VR so I haven't even played it.. in addition to it doesn't work right. I mentioned in the above video that if I had to do it over again I wouldn't have spent $1,300 on a stupid monitor
Absolutely love this video lads. Great father son moments. Thanks for posting! Can we crowd fund some extensions and a rig (and relationship counseling if needed) for @JDFdoggo. Would donate generously.
Would take one hell of a crowdfunding effort to get this one off the ground 😅 but I admire your optimism! Might actually be cheaper to crowdfund a couple of extra Aussie visas... 👀
I got here, I would say, by mistake :) Subscribed! I used to play Dirt rally 1 ages ago. This is so great with community league. I'd like to find time and do some rallying! If you like cars ( 😅) would it be impossible if you would check my 3D VR car channel for some feedback?
There's actually a monthly DIRT Rally 2.0 community championship that runs on this channel, a new round every month 👍 could be worth checking out if that's something you want to try? By the way, I'm away from the rig and my VR headset for a few days but will have a look at your videos when I'm next back, looks good.
@@enjoyvride Hey mate, sorry for the late reply! We're in the final round of the series at the moment which runs until the end of December, but will be starting a new series next year again 😎 here's the link: dirtrally2.dirtgame.com/clubs/club/367150

@@DDFRacer that's an excellent point. He definitely looked comfortable in the headset. Was cool to see.
great video, I'm surprised how he didn't got sick!! Not long ago I let my cousin try my wheel+VR (Quest2) for a ride, and he couldn't do more than 2 minutes, he almost threw up 😂
your dad is tough! cheers Dan & Dad
Yeah I was quite relieved about his calm stomach 😅 wouldn't have made a particularly long video otherwise!
Wish he would of tryed AMS2,tryed that in VR last year was mind blowing...Really like his general thought's on it makes really good points awsome dad and dan :D
Yeah that would have been the next thing we would have tried but sadly we ran out of time for some AMS2, maybe next time 😉 although who knows what advances there'll be in the next few years!
would love to see him try AMS2 of Micorsoft Flight Sim. Should get you a Reverb G2
Same here, I would have loved to have loaded up AMS2 for him as well but sadly we ran out of time and never got around to getting back in the rig again before he had to fly back home to the UK. It's definitely on the list for next time whenever he can make it out to Australia 😉
PS. if you're _offering_ a Reverb G2 then tell me where to sign up 😆 I'll gladly take that off your hands for you.
@@DDFRacer i got my Reverb G2 for less than $300 US. On Ebay. Also you need a beefy GPU to run it good. Like 4090 perferably.
Nice vid - this has tempted me to think about getting a VR headset sometime....but are you sure that's not GamerMuscle's dad?
I will admit there is a bit of a resemblance there, but I honestly don't ever remember my Dad drinking a cup of tea in my life 🤔 so surely it can't be...
Great vid. Made even better by the outstanding plethora of very British insults like "Oh you armpit"
Ha yeah 🤣 he caught me off guard a few times when I was doing the editing. Safe to say he has the same kind of reaction when he hears the Tuesday Thunder AUSNZ voice comms in full effect.
You may have turned me Dan. Thinking seriously about going VR
I can take no responsibility for any financial expenditure you may incur due to watching this video Mark 😅 although I've got no doubt that, should you decide to pull the pin, you'll love it. Especially for rally! VR was a literal game changer when it came to that, it makes it so much easier to feel which direction the car is going in and how much it's actually sliding.
good driver!
Yeah he's not too shabby, right? Especially considering he usually does all of his sim racing on a beat up old Xbox controller 😉 I was amazed how quickly he adapted to using not only a wheel and pedals, but the VR headset too.
Great video. Reply enjoyed it
Cheers Ben, was an absolute pleasure to put this one together. Due to being on opposite ends of the world now I don't get to see my Dad very often, so an experience like this is something truly special I'll treasure forever. Glad I could share it 👍
@@DDFRacer hey today I just bought a PC for VR racing. Rtx 4080 Intel i7 13700K . Do you think it will look good using meta Quest 2?
❤
So that's super cool man! I'm a 61-year-old dad that built his rig and learned about VR. I mentioned it in my reveal video that you can watch if you like.. ruclips.net/video/ZoKrwHxF6Io/видео.html
One thing I really noticed is since in VR the car is around you all the movements are more intuitive from the body roll and such.
No offence but are sure he's your real Dad? He's a bit of a badass .
He sure is 😎 we all need to start somewhere though mate, he's got a fair few more years experience at it than me!
True... Are you in here being a troublemaker?!
@@apexshaver7301 Ha ha Phil ,you know me too well lol
@@DDFRacer How can I subscribe to the dirt community championship?
@@enjoyvride Hey mate, sorry for the late reply! We're in the final round of the series at the moment which runs until the end of December, but will be starting a new series next year again 😎 here's the link: dirtrally2.dirtgame.com/clubs/club/367150
