I hang out in Royal Oak at Woodward and 13 1/2 on Friday evenings in the summer. The scene is mostly car centric. Young people from mid teens to early 30s hang out at the strip malls with their sports cars and suped up honda, toyotas, and other compact cars. The much older adults have their classic cars parked in the lots as well. In Ferndale on the same evenings the scene is mostly pedestrial traffic, Arts, cafes and outside seating restaurants, and farmers markets.
Ferndale is a fantastic place with the comforts of a small town while also having the accessibility to downtown Detroit. Very diverse and welcoming also. I have a family and bought a house in ferndale in March.
I have lived in both cities, and they are equally great places to live for the reasons mentioned in the video. If you're planning to visit the area, or you're going to see a show at the Royal Oak Music Theater, absolutely book a room at the illustirous Hotel Royal Oak, and get some pizza from Milan's on Main Street. Then go to Woodward in Ferndale for some great little clubs, restaurants and bars. Never had Middle Eastern food? ANITA'S!!! Order a Beiruit Sunset from the bar. You'll thank me.
I'm a single straight man looking for a place where there's a large ratio of single women to single men and Ferndale looks appealing as there's a large single never married population but being I'm straight should I consider the more family friendly Royal Oak?
Royal Oak isn’t a bad spot to look into! Having such a great night life definitely gives you some more opportunity and things to do. If you have any other questions feel free to reach out anytime!
Both are hubs where they are too drunk from the comforts from generations before, so drunk they are blindly leading themselves into irreversible decadence. The worst hoods in Detroit will look like a picnic compared to what's to come for not only Ferndale, royal oak, and all of Michigan, but the whole United States.

I've only spent time in Ferndale when I'm out that way and the downtown is pretty nice.
Gotta jump over to Royal Oak sometime!

Both are dumps when compared with South Texas.
