My friend, do you know if Ferndale would be a nice livable place for single people (without families)? How is public transportation over there? Is it gonna be OK even like for people who don't own a car? I do not plan on commuting to Detroit much. I just wanna live in a nice safe quiet neighborhood, that is within close proximity to basic amenities like grocery shopping, general stores, and transportation.
@@OtomoTenzi Ferndale is great for everyone! As a Realtor, we must abide by the Fair Housing Act, and talking demographics is a gray area for us, but I can tell you the town has great walkability to get from point A to B, there's also several public transportation options, the most used would be the smart bus, you can go to smartbus.org and type in the location you're looking to go. Ferndale as I mentioned has a great nightlife, so it can be quite populated at night on the weekends, but even with that in mind I wouldn't say it's overly loud, just populated. When you're looking into a suburb like Ferndale (any in this area), you're never more than a few minutes from all the amenities.
@@LivingInMichigan OK, that's sounds GREAT... I've been thinkin' of living ALONE there if it is safe for singles, and has a decent quality of life and possibly even retire there sometime in the future. I don't mind the nightlife crowd just as long as it's still gonna be relatively safe to come out for a nice walk in the evening. Thank you for all the helpful info!
I’m a little biased since I grew up in Ferndale, and lived there most of my life. My folks and I lived in a large, brick, 1920’s duplex on W.Bennett. I started grade school while living in that house. I walked to Taft elementary every morning, and came home for lunch every day. Unless there was the yearly hot dog lunch at the school. It happened once a year, and the strangest thing was you got to see your teacher eat. When I was in the first grade, my folks decided it was time for them to buy a house. I remember driving all over, looking at homes in Berkeley, Royal Oak, Clawson and Ferndale. They decided on Ferndale so I could attend school at St. James. I was excited about the move, my teacher and class gave me a going away party. My folks began moving into our new house, I went off to my aunt and uncles house so I wouldn’t be in the way. My mom went to St. James to enroll me and got a huge surprise. St. James was no longer accepting new students because they were discontinuing their school program. My mom went to Washington school to enroll me there. More bad news. We lived just over the borderline for students. I had to go back to my same class at Taft. I was more than mortified. Living in Ferndale, growing up there was mostly a Norman Rockwell painting, especially during holidays. I graduated from Ferndale High, and in my mid 20’s met someone who was the one. We moved into a tiny bungalow. We loved living there, but our landlord would never consider selling to us. After living there 11 years, my partner received a very attractive job offer. But we had to move, 800 miles away. We felt it was the best choice for us. So the new employer sent movers to pack up our house. They worked all day. It was snowing, heavier by the hour. If you’ve never experienced it, it’s the sickest feeling ever as you watch strangers drive away, with everything you own. We’ve been in Atlanta 18 years. If we could we’d move back this weekend. If we won the lottery, we’d come back to Ferndale. We’ve always missed it, and our tiny rental home. We have a beautiful home here and a nice life. We miss the snow. Greenfield Village, and a lot of other places that are no longer there. Ferndale is a great choice to start a family, and retire to.
Yes, Ferndale is a great community. Neighbors are friendly and we have always loved all the shops and events, for sure! Some things to consider: Property taxes, look at similar homes that were sold in last couple years. It is CRAZY high for new owners. The school system has a great deal of growth opportunity, to be certain. Currently the push seems ro be for optics versus quality education. Definitely consider options if you have, or plan on having children. We love it here, I have lived in Ferndale for about 12 years and LOVE that it is a very walkable city. Just about anything you need is easily walked to.
Ferndale is a great community, this video is correct about the education. If you have kids I recommend checking out Royal Oak, Clawson or Berkeley… but yes, they are more expensive.
I grew up in Ferndale in the 80s and 90s came back after 2010 bought my home. I live near downtown and there is definitely a rat problem. Other then that I love living in ferndale

This was very helpful. I will check your video Ferndale vs Royal Oak. People's comments help with making decisions as well.

I lived in Ferndale for 12 years, best city service I had ever seen. I enjoyed living there BUT if you have school aged children MOVE ELESWHERE!
