Protestants will take “call no man your father” out of context at supposedly face value, but ignore the 6th chapter of John’s Gospel and imagine Jesus is speaking figuratively despite Him stating emphatically that He is not. That’s quite the blind spot.

Jesus said to call no man on earth your father, it’s not an exaggeration ir else Jesus is a liar. Catholics twists God’s words like the devil who tried to manipulate Jesus when He fasted 40 days and 40 nights and when the devil also tempted Adam and Eve. Read the gospel and see how the catholics are just like the other idolaters that got destroyed by God in the Bible

We must understand the meaning Paul had of the word "father" in that verse of 1CORINTHIENS4:15.
Paul gives his understanding of the word "father" in 1CORINTHIENS 3:5 where he present himself as a servant by which the Corinthiens believed in the Gospel.
Therefore, the meaning we give to the word "father" can be misleading

As usual a very good teaching is given by Dr. Petrie.
I want to add some comments-
    1. Peter was an apostle who had primacy because of his understanding Christ Jesus to be the Messiah. He is ALWAYS listed FIRST in the Inner Circle of Peter, James, and John.
    2. However, the admonishment to loose or bind was NOT given specifically to Peter. In CONTEXT, Jesus was speaking to His apostles. Therefore, IN CONTEXT, they each had been chosen and each had the ability to forgive sins or retain sins- to loose or bind-through the preaching and teaching of the Gospel-all Twrlve-not just Peter. Thomas travelled to India. Bartholomew and Nathaniel traveled to Armenia and created followers there-disciples-and the power to loose or bind (free them of sin or retain their sin), was granted to them based on Jesus own words to His apostles IN CONTEXT.
    3. The term “Abba” meant Father in Hebrew, as it still does today. Church leaders were first called “haAbba” then “Papias” and eventually “Pope”-long BEFORE-there was a Bishop of Rome. The Coptic Orthodox Church and the Ethiopian Church call their priests “Abuna” which means “Father.” This continues to this day. Remember that the Church at Alexandria was founded by Mark-Peter’s Secretary (Ameneuse). The Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches still refer to their Priests as Padre/Patri or Father in English. So for the Protestants to attack Catholics and fail to have a wider grasp of the historic customs of the church is an example of religious bias that is ignorant of the bigger issue at hand. “Father” is used a a descriptive of those who lead the believers in the church.
Timothy was Paul’s son in the Faith. Conversely, Paul is Timothy’s (and Titus’) “Father” in the faith. Titus was the bishop of the churches of Crete. Timothy was the bishop of the churches of Ephesus.
    4. When Paul writes his famous Letter to the Romans-he had never been to Rome. Notice Paul never addresses a single Bishop (Episkopos) at Rome. Why? There weren’t any yet! The churches or the Church of Rome Paul addresses in Rome and it’s surrounding villages are house churches. In other words, there is NO SINGLE BISHOP in charge at that time. It came later, much later.
    5. The Bishops of the Early Church were all considered equal-there was no vertical structure to them. That is, a bishop had his sea or diocese. Jesus is the head of the church who points to the Father, Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father. Part of the break from the West in AD 1054 (The Great Schism) was the Filioque controversy where the Church of Rome changed the Nicene Creed using a local council to modify what was agreed by a universal church-wide ecumenical council!
Nicea, (AD 325), as an example, had 318 bishops in attendance-about 80% were from the Eastern Church-that is, the Church of Rome was under represented at Nicea!
Further, tensions snapped when the bishop of Rome sought supremacy over ALL other Bishops and their seas. This rift continues today. The Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches are not in communion with the Catholic Church. While the Catholic Church has taken strides to mend the schism-the divide continues to this day. And while Catholics can take Communion in an Orthodox Church, the restriction of all orthodox Churches is that their members are barred from taking Communion in a Catholic Church.
The term father is not just a Catholic thing. It is a Christian thing as evidenced in the NT (as mentioned here by Dr. Petrie) and in Early Church history and by the main branches found in the East and in Northern Africa.
The five centers of Christendom were: Jerusalem, Antioch, Alexandria, Rome, and then Constantinople. (In that order)
Today, roughly, the Eastern Churches (Syriac, Oriental, Eastern Orthodox) follow the Antioch teachings. The Coptic Orthodox Church of Egypt and the Ethiopic Orthodox Church of Ethiopia follow the teachings of Alexandria. The Catholic Church follows the teachings of Rome and North Africa, the European branches of the Orthodox Church follow Constantinople teachings.
Granted elements of all five are found throughout. Geographical variations are natural due to distance and cultural views. As an example, beards are no part of the Bishops found in Rome. Beards are found at all the Orthodox churches based on local customs.
But is it not the same Christ Jesus who died for all?

@po18guy John was indeed the first Christian prophet, and, arguably the first Christian martyr, if one doesn't count Herod's killing of the infants, which was done in an effort to kill the Christ Child, who had escaped into Egypt with Mary and Joseph. John also is recorded as saying "Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world"....although, in one passage, he also expresses some doubt when he sends his own disciples to ask Jesus...."Are you the One to come, or should we expect someone else?" John also recognized that he needed to be baptized by Jesus, although Jesus came to him for a water Baptism.

"In that day I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and I will clothe him with your robe, and will bind your sash on him, and will commit your authority to his hand. And he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah." (Is 22:21)
"And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven." (Mt 23:9)
The use of "father" in Isaiah shows that the term can be appropriately applied to those who serve in roles of spiritual leadership and guidance, as long as it does not overshadow the recognition of God’s unique fatherhood.
This understanding helps reconcile the two passages, indicating that Jesus' command in Matthew 23:9 is not a universal prohibition against the term but a reminder of the preeminent fatherhood of God.

Stephen's address, especially in light of his reference to Moshe, can most reasonably be taken as generational; "Brothers and Fathers," in a literal sense, that many of those present were sired by the elders of the community. It wasn't out of respect for their religious authority, but simply to acknowledge them as the predecessors of the fulfilled covenant.

Forgive me, but it seems like the same desire to be acknowledge as the Pharisees Jesus mentioned to want to be called Father. Fathers or initiators of faith, may have a reason to be called " Fathers of the Church" as a single point description. For every priest, when we are all priests before Christ, doesn't make sense. In addition, labels for church clergy were clearly identified, Presbyters, Deacons, Pastors... No where, that i've studied thus far, even in early church writings has anyone addressed themselves as Father. Paul did not call himself father, he was using a reference, but never addressed himself as father to his disciples.... I will stand in Christ command " Call no one on earth Father" why because he's breaking the norm of Abraham as Father of Nations, because he wants all glory to himself as Savior and Father of all Nations and Father of Christianity. and the the context of 1 john 2:13, he's actually addressing fathers, as the next verse, he's addressed young men. I think the catholic church as extended their interpretation a bit more than Christ intended.

With all due respect to you, I am not convinced with these examples for the simple fact that referring to themselves as Father's only was to point out that they were the first ones. To call others that follow up after carrying his teachings can not make that claim. On this matter I am not sure if there are enough blessings on it. I remain uncomfortable and concerned that it will have a unfavorable outcome.

Not all protestants think the same and I feel that in the comments section we are portrayed as Pastor Steven Anderson. I did not even watch the video but it is quite easy. 1 Cor 4:15 and Philemon 10, Paul portrays himself as a father. Moreoever: In John 1:38 Jesus explains that Rabbi means didaskalos (teacher), yet In Mt 23:7-8 Jesus taught to call no man a Rabbi because he is the ONLY teacher (didaskalos) and in 1 Tim 2:7 Paul calls himself a didaskalos. Even if one would like to argue as KJV mad onlyist the problem is for them because even if in Mt (kjv) 23:7-8 uses the word Master for Kathigistis, the very word didaskalos in John (kjv) 1:38 is translated as Master too.
I just think we should be more easy in our conversations and stop mocking one another. There are talibans in protestantism and they exist also in catholicism.
    God bless you all

The term 'father' in this context is a political superior, and in that sense it is prohibited, because we have one political superior, our father. That is the context of Mat. 23, and its address concerning the political superiors of Jerusalem, who would be destroyed.
In 1 Cor. 4, Paul is writing as the planter of the church in Corinth. He addresses them as brothers, and points out that they sought to rule as kings, to which he applauds and included himself as then attaining that status with them, while observing that even the Apostles were the lowest in rank. He responds to their ambition with a tender appeal to his beloved children, as his offspring in the faith. He begat them, so shouldn't they treat him at least with the respect of a natural father who produced them? That is all Paul asks them and all he asserts in that passage, he claims no political superiority or title.
1 John 2 refers to fathers and little children and young men as situations in life or faith, not as titles of power or authority.
Stephen addresses the Sanhedrin as brothers (equals) and fathers (rulers). This is not any of his doing to grant them this status.
The Roman Catholic pope, however, does claim very specific title and authority, of superiority in power to interpret and rule and apply teaching and power. The pope, meaning 'father', is exactly the title of political superiority that the Lord prohibited. The problem is not the word, it is the title and the power and superiority claims asserted in the title and the authority structure built around it.
The kingdom of God has a very specific power and authority structure where all men are brothers and none are fathers. The head of every man is Christ, 1 Cor. 11. Men as equals, as brothers, assemble as assemblies or congregations and exercise authority in congress. The authority of elders and overseers is not over the assembly, but to administer and execute the decisions and policies of the assembly and to oversee the funds and servants of the assembly. They may also preside over and keep order in the assembly meetings, but the collective decision making resides in the assembly itself, who are responsible for discernment and judgement, including of the overseers 1 Tim. 5:17-25.

Yes, I was wondering why the full context of 1 John 2 wasn't taken into consideration, especially when Dr Pitre emphasises the importance of contextual reading. I do like Dr Pitre's teachings very much, but very occasionally (as in this case) I have to partially disagree.
I do agree that Jesus isn't talking about a blanket ban on the title "father" (as scripture shows) however the claim that Jesus was using hyperbolic language here seems to me to be a bit weak.
I am in no way condemning any church that may use the title "father", however I doubt that this explanation from Dr Pitre will convince informed and well-studied "protestants".

The Hebrew Matthew shows Jesus said "the Scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses seat. So, wharever he [Moses] says, listen and do. But don't follow their [the Pharisee's] works and deeds." Jesus was saying we have to follow Moses, not the works and deeds of men - in this case Jewish laws and traditions (in Hebrew, the takanot and ma'asim). But the same principle applies to every religion departing from the Law, the Prophets and the Writtings, such as mainstream Christianity - Catholics, Orthodox and Protestants alike.
Furthermore, when Stephen said "fathers", it is pretty obvious he means 'ancestors' in both instances. When Paul says he is their "father", it is also pretty obvious it's a figure of speech. 1. In the entire 23rd chapter of Matthew, Jesus is exposing the evil ways of the Pharisees, saying:
    a. "They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on people's shoulders, but will they lift a finger to move them? Not they! (Vs. 4)
    b. "Everything they do is done to attract attention, like wearing broader headbands and longer tassels, like wanting to take the place of honour at banquets and the front seats in the synagogues." (Vs. 5)
    2. Now, in verses 7, 9, and 10, Jesus criticizes the Pharisees for their use of religious TITLES. As Jesus said in those verses:
    a. "[The Pharisees like] being greeted respectfully in the market squares and having people call them Rabbi." (Vs. 7)
    b. "You must call no one on earth your father, since you have only one Father, and he is in heaven." (Vs. 9)
    c. "Nor must you allow yourselves to be called teachers, for you have only one Teacher, the Christ." (Vs. 10)
As you can see, in the context of Matt. 23:9, Jesus instructed his followers not to copy the ways of the Pharisees by applying to themselves such religious titles as "Rabbi," "Father," and "Teacher." Did Jesus' followers obey his words? Well, ask yourselves, where in the Bible was:
    a. Paul referred to by the title "Father Paul"? Answer: NOWHERE!!
    b. Peter addressed as "Rabbi Peter"? Answer: NOWHERE!!
    c. Luke called "Teacher Luke"? Answer: NOWHERE!!
One last thing. Some uniformed Catholics will say that if NO MAN can be called 'Father,' then, no one can address his paternal parent as 'father.' But is that reasoning correct? Not according to one Catholic Bible that says in a footnote for Matt. 23:9: "[Jesus did not] mean that the title 'father' is never to be used by a son to his father."
So, when Jesus said to call no one "Father," he meant that the term should not be used as a religious title the way the Pharisees were using the word. Catholics do not have a Biblical precedent for calling their priests 'Father' because NOWHERE in the Bible were Jewish priests ever addressed as 'Father.' It was only the scribes and the Pharisees that were calling themselves 'Father' and 'Rabbi.' Clearly, when Catholics call their priests 'Father,' they are imitating the Pharisees and the scribes, not the priests of ancient Israel, who were NEVER addressed as 'Father.' In fact, not even Jesus was addressed as 'Father Jesus.'

@@sliglusamelius8578 "[Jesus] literally said “call NO man father”, and that would include your biological father. Pitre gave other examples that you ignored."
Consider what I said that _you_ ignored. When Jesus said to "call no one 'father,' he didn't mean a son couldn't call his male parent 'father.' As one Catholic Bible that in a footnote for Matt. 23:9: "[Jesus did not] mean that the title 'father' is never to be used by a son to his father."
"A stupid title or name is not important to Jesus, is it?"
Wrong again. At Matt. 23:10, Jesus said: "Nor must you allow yourselves to be called teachers, for you have only one Teacher, the Christ." Do you honestly believe that Jesus felt that referring to himself as 'Teacher' was a stupid or an unimportant title? Absolutely not! Jesus also said that those who referred to him as 'Rabbi' was also proper. (Vs. 8) However, when it came to the title of 'Father,' Jesus made an exception. As he said at verse 9, "You must call no one *ON EARTH* your father, since you have only one Father, and he is in heaven." Now, where was Jesus when he made that remark? He was *ON EARTH.* So, while Jesus allowed others to refer to him as 'Teacher' and 'Rabbi,' he would not accept the title of 'Father,' which is reserved for God alone. Even Jesus' Jewish opposers knew that. As they said to him: "We have one Father, God." (John 8:41) Clearly, Jesus never accepted a title that was meant only for God.
Catholics believe the Bible gives them the reason to call their priests 'Father.' But, if that's true, can you show me a single scripture in your Bible where a priest was referred to by the title of 'Father'? You know you can't. Obviously they are below Him as He is God, but in terms of teaching authority and the continuation of His mission, this was given to them Further, the Scriptures do not confirm their own canon, since which books should be included is nowhere written in Scripture, and the Scriptures do not interpret themselves. So, you need both some authority that can definitively say which books go in the canon and which can interpret correctly the Scriptures. You only need to look at the diversity of Christian denominations who all claim to be guided by the Spirit but all disagree on major points of doctrine to know we need some organ of authoritative teaching.

Most people confuse family structure and (God's structure in the church) Jesus was pointing this Words directly to those who sits in Moses seat Wich means those who are in the leadership structure , those who are ministers in the church of God, those who are preachers , we must not call them Father... that is total idolatry. Those people are closing Doors for you to enter into the Kingdom of God. That is why Jesus said to His disciples "The Greatest amongst you shall be your servent"

The Catholic Church now claims to sit on the same seat Moses sat.
Pushing their Human-made doctrines that reject the actual core meanings and guidance the True Prophets (Masters) brought for humanity.
The church makes creeds that contradict the actual truth, leading people astray from ever having the opportunity to find any greater truth within their lives, by following this false authority forfeit their right to think for themselves and have a personal connection with The True Sponsor who made them.
This one single truth below is far greater than every lie the catholic church pushes with its false doctrine.
Our Sponsor by Creating us within the universe has left a question on our hearts why are we here.
To answer this is called our re-sponse. The individual duty of every conscious person to see for themselves.
How using the abilities we were given. Each person's ability is different, those with more abilities, given more responsibility.
As it is my responsibility to shed light on the false doctrines, half-truths the Catholic Church pushes were built on, seeing these lies for what they really are and were originally established for, we have a duty to expose these dogmas, for what they really are!
These man-made doctrines are no more than a lie, false claims that reject the light of the truth, greater truth always exposes falsehood for that it really is.

This is a long comment full of your own man made interpretations and standards, ignorant of the evidence available

You are the one who is a heretic! If you deny His Church, that He, Himself founded in 33AD, then you deny His Kingdom and you deny Jesus Christ!
You are in protest to the truth, just like Martin Luther and Calvin. So sad. You should learn Church History and learn the Bible. So unfortunate that protestants don't know the Bible like they pretend to.

“Exaggerate” = Liar 🤥 Jesus did not use lies to teach.

No. Luke 14:26 shows that Jesus can use hyperbole to make a point.

What does “exaggerate = liar mean? “. Jesus was talking hyperbole as proved on the video. Just like Jesus is not a liar telling us to cut off our hands and limbs if anyone sins. Stephen called Abraham father, Paul and Apostle John were called “father” they are also not liars
