    You are a very talented filmmaker. The creative process is different than the administrative aspects of making a film. They are two separate and distinct activities that require different skill sets and even different parts of your mind(brain). Business is business, making film is making film.
    All your past efforts were focused on making film. You had no business background. Now you are starting a business, and realize that it is unrelated to making a film. Just as your film making skills kept improving, so too will your business skills.
    You are a smart person, and talented. Keep learning, and pushing. The best producers, actors, writers, filmmakers, all experienced the difficulty and struggle, and almost did not make it. They pursued. When you have a talent, and you do, it will be discovered and you will be highly successful. Keep letting the world know, and see what you can do.

    Spike Lee once spoke about the expectations he had after winning his first award out of film school. He thought would sit by the phone and the calls would roll in. After several months of nothing and not being able to eat or pay his bills he realized he had to start making his own calls and knocking on doors before anything started to happen.

      Leftcoast Media House I learned that making your way in this industry is hard, really hard. But is totally worth it because it's the most regarding job ever!

    • @anonymous_friend
      @anonymous_friend 7 лет назад +25

      I believe the industry is heavily saturated. Cameras are cheap. Sound kits are cheap. Drones are cheap. People will always work for cheaper than you. Everyone is a film maker.
      What sets you apart? The STORY. Can you convey emotion and make it believable?
      It's also the people you know in the business that matter more than anything. The people are you connection to the industry. The lead to your next job. I wouldn't be as successful as I am in my freelance career today if I hadn't have met certain people along the way.
      First impressions are everything. You really have to show these people that you are passionate about doing something. You have to be well defined like you said. Specializing is key. Do you want to be a producer, director, DP, sound mixer? I tried the whole I'll do anything approach, but that doesn't get you professional work. I kept my cool under high stress situations, and was easy to get along with, and a good communicator. I said yes to every opportunity early on.
      Experience gets you further. Knowing how to negotiate makes you better money. Knowing when to turn a job down is important too. You will accept jobs, then get a phone call for something else that is happening at the same time. I look back on several critical moments that influenced how my career shaped itself. What seem like small details end up making a huge impact later on.
      If you freelance. The hardest part isn't the money. It's keeping your head up when work is slow, when you lose that big job, when the client doesn't pay, your competitors underbid you, etc. It's a journey of highs and lows, and some can handle it, and some can't. It will take its toll on you. Try not to let it burn you out. You have a great attitude and the motivation. I think you are going to do well. Good luck.

    What I've learned since I began my business back in 1994 is to be proactive I really have to get off my arse and get the business in to produce. Remember this if you're not in their faces regularly, those potential clients will forget you. You have to be out there pitching your ideas on a regular basis, call them up tell em you have a great idea which will be perfect for them to launch this Spring and can work for them each month or each week or each season. Do some live broadcasting for them direct to their subscribers etc. Be relentless and tell them this, Left Coast Media is the" Right Post" Media for them. Why? because "you know" their products and their target markets inside out.....Remember be Relentless and be Persistence. That phone ain't gunna ring if you sit on your arse waiting for a call. It's a tough business and if it was easy, well every one would be doing it. Anyone can pick up a camera and get a great shot. To be a good film maker you need to understand the emotion of the story, that slow zoom into a face to capture that tear as it slides down a cheek. That word someone says which is going to be deal breaker, a good film maker will hear that and focus on that. And really it doesn't matter if the story is 30 sec or 3 hours, they all have a beginning a middle and an end. I punch out a lot of TVCs and company videos but I treat them all with the respect they deserve. The people who have contracted my company have placed their faith, loyalty and invested their money in me to create my vision of what their audience and buyers will respond immediately to. I have met cameramen and editors in the past that do a job which may be simple to complete and call the job "polishing a turd". They forget how lucky they are to be in TV or Film. They could easily be at the other end of that scale, fishing turds out of a sewerage works. We are very lucky to be in the industry we love. Stay happy be persistent be relentless believe in yourself, believe it will happen... and guess what..it will! Cheers John

    Thanks for sharing, new subscriber here. Do you know which is the film you made that is showing at around 18:44?
    Also don't know if its too much to ask but, do you mind sharing what are these adjustments that you had to make in the middle of the year grow the company and start getting more clients? I would guess increase social presence, start cold calling/emailing possible clients, but you might have some other interesting ideas that can help the company grow :) Thanks!

    Hi levi
    his is a fact of life for many. most times it takes around 5 years to establish yourself in any business. You are talented and you have youth and the future on your side. try doing an add for say a car company for yourself and if they like it charge them. Its a bit like the photography industry on a whole. there are 5 billion professional photographers and they all want a piece of an ever decreasing pie. email me if you would like to chat mate. but keep going you will break through. you have a calmness and positivity and talent. great combo. like listening to your tutorials as well. Another avenue is teaching face to face. great income producer

    Hi
    I really love your videos.
    You obviously know what you are doing behind the camera :) but i have
    one question why is it that all your vlogin material is always so dark.
    do you just like it that way or why do you film like that?
    greetings from a fan from germany

    • @Levi_Allen
      @Levi_Allen  7 лет назад +1

      Mainly because I use auto settings while shooting (if there is anything else bright in the frame, it brings down the total exposure making my face darker. For example the bright sky behind me in this video. I should have set up the shot differently). I could fix some of this if I spent more time on grading and other things, but my goal is to not get to nit-picky with how the image looks, if I did I wouldn't put out vlogs at all because it would take me too long.
      Hopefully they can be brighter in the future.

    I don't mean to be disrespectful but, here is some constructive criticism. Composition, lighting and editing could use some serious improvements. Any lessons there that you have learned that you can show in your next video?
    I mean this is your video where you talk about lessons you learned in filmmaking and present your brand and yest the footage looks pretty unimpressive to say the least, with basically setting your camera wherever it could fit and setting it to auto. No sense for composition, lighting or editing rhythm.
    I can't tell if you are out of focus in some shots in your yard, or is the strange choice to back light yourself the reason while you seem out of focus. Just about any other composition in the overcast yard would work better, so I don't know why you chose the probably worst one. Either your are blissfully unaware of your shortcomings or you just don't care about getting better. Either way sounds like a very strange thing to show in a video about "Lessons Learned my First Year Full Time Filmmaking" Also other shots seem to be in lower resolution than your main presentation. Why is that?
    I am probably not the right audience for your content, but your title made sure Google recommend me the video so I feel I should comment because "your are so talented and awesome" comments won't get you any better I can tell you that much.
    Cheers and I hope you learn something about the things I mentioned. Your enthusiasm is great but your skills are not. Sorry.

    • @Levi_Allen
      @Levi_Allen  7 лет назад

      +Krunoslav Stifter - Hey Krunoslav, thanks for taking the time to comment. Truly appreciate it, and don't find it offensive at all.
      For me, I use RUclips as a place to share the raw journey and what I've been learning along the way. I don't really intend or expect the quick videos I make to share on here to represent fully what I do in my client Work or full films.
      If that's not really your thing, that's totally OK and I get that.
      There's always things in videos like this that I make that I wish I'd taken the time to do better, but the truth is, if I make the process too complicated I wouldn't have time to do it at all.
      Some RUclips videos i make have higher production quality, and others don't. The truth is RUclips was never meant to be representative of my skills as a filmmaker, or what I do in my client work. I hope that makes sense.

    • @KrunoslavStifter
      @KrunoslavStifter 7 лет назад +1

      I understand. Its your channel and your choice what you post and in what way. So I understand. I would however share one quote as food for thought. "Every job is a self portrait of the person who did it ... Autograph your work with excellence.” ― Vince Lombardi Jr. ....just saying. Either way, wish you good luck. Cheers!
