Forbidden Door is truly the living embodiment of Tony Khan playing with his toys. Where were the stories going into this PPV? What are the stories coming out of this PPV (besides Danielson breaking his freaking arm)? What long-term effect will this PPV have on AEW's televised product going forward? There's no answer to any of these questions! It was all just "wrestler A vs wrestler B to have 5-star matches". And AEW's base ate it up like they eat up everything that company gives them. It is really a shame. I watched New Japan religiously as soon as they began putting shows on Ustream many moons ago, but stopped watching when Kenny got his main event heel push (couldnt take his seriously in that position, liked him as a junior). I missed the whole downslop of Tanahashi. I only have his main event prime in my head. I would have loved to see Tanahashi of 12 years ago vs MJF of today. But alas... Im not sure if he has already in Japan, but it might be time to transition him to the opener old timer 6 man tags they do at beginning of the show with the occasional singles match if they need him.
@johngallagher72 true. Luckily for me, i have all those shows from those years on my server. Funny thing is the day after Forbidden Door, I put on Wrestle Kingdom 7 to get the bad taste out of my mouth. Great Tana vs Okada main event plus Ayumi Nakamura epic live performance for Suzukis entrance plus his actual match with Yuji Nagata
Absolutely agree, the jungle boy tied up in a ball spot was where i switched it off. The four way previous was testing my patience then this just made me say hell with it. I dont understand how people enjoy this phony crap.
Pro wrestling is phony as a general rule. MMA proved that ages ago and the number of "Here, let me show you why you don't see this 'wrestling' hold in MMA." videos offer pretty damning evidence as well. Irish whips shouldn't work in real life. People don't magically bounce off the ropes and into a waiting opponent just to get slammed. The figure four and Scorpion require a LOT of cooperation, as do most non-limb stretch/choke submission holds. People choose to accept it as a show, a spectacle and that's fine. What you enjoy and don't is up to you. Getting all hot and bothered and calling it "phony" is a bit much though.
MJF v Naito is the match Forbidden Door needed on any year last, this or next. Two heels, omg breaking all the rules. Has MJF finally met his match? As Naito spits in MJFs face, will the crowd cheer? Japanese trailer trash vs Preppy Boy is the match we need. Naito can still work and give MJF the match he needs
Naitos heel shit is alright but almost every other match was a multiman jus to cram as many japanese guys in the show, card would been better n prolly shorter if it was jus singles n sum tags esp w no trios belts on the card
Can we also just realize how unsafe it is to work at AEW? Punk got elbow dropped in the dick and Danielson got hir forearm fractured from an elbow drop. Its a fucking miracle that Omega isnt paralyzed from the neck down. If I was omega i would have words with Ospreay
Punk, Danielson, and Omega all wrestled guys not a part of AEW. Punk got elbow dropped by NJPW’s Kojima. Danielson hurt his elbow against NJPW’s Okada. Will Ospreay is the one that hit the tiger driver and he’s also a New Japan talent. If you want to hate on anyone for being unsafe hate on strong style/New Japan.
Why would he have words with Ospreay? These 2 idiots came up with that stupid spot together. That wasn't an accident, that was a Japanese legends move. Omega chose to do this because he's a clueless mark.
@@jvgoat6725 I mean...what they said is still true. They were working for AEW when these things happened. It doesn't matter what company their opponents are signed to.
I liked the ppv. Wasn't blown away by it. I actually really liked osprey v omega match. It was wicked. I popped for Naito because he's one of my favorites from njpw. I always enjoy anything with zach sabre jr because I'm a sucker for technical and mat wrestling. The main event was absolutely fantastic. I did not expect Okada to lose but I wasn't mad. I liked the submission finish and seeing Okada bend the way humans don't normally bend. The girls match was passable. Im starting to get into Willow Nightingale. My big criticism is what should be one of the most prestigious belt in wrestling being challenged by a mid carder. SANADA should have had a much bigger star for an opponent. CM Punk match was good. Wasn't anything to write home about but it was entertaining. MJF and Tanahashi match made me cringe a bit. Tanahashi is my other favorites but man i felt bad. But it was decent for what it was. Good show. Way too freaking long but I was entertained 😊
I was watching the Moxley vs. Ishii Dynamite match that had the "sharing chops" spot last night. My son walked in the room during this and just laughed at it endlessly. it just came across as two guys slapping each other to him-silly, not painful or hardcore. He does get into some wrestling moments (his favorite wrestler is Elias because of the guitar shots), so his reaction isn't an "I hate wrestling" thing. I'm more of an AEW fan than Jim, but I agree they need to limit how many matches contain the I-slap-you-you-slap-me sequence. At least slow down the chop rate or sell the chops a little more.
I really really like Zack saber jr the problem is he shouldnt be in matches like this Danielson would be an ideal opponent for him or anyone really technical i think if booked right jim would enjoy some of his work like his match in DC with Tom lawler
I dont know why they insist on putting zack sabre jr in these garbage matches, he's such a good technical wrestler, and i think jim would actually like him if he seen an actual match where he gets to do what he does best.
If only Dave Meltzer gave out stars for feuds/angles, instead of matches... That WM III Hogan vs Andre match was spectacular, because of the feud/build/implication, even though Andre was far to banged of to do anything in the ring at that point.
I say the biggest Forbidden Door PPV that would make AEW and Tony Khan a lot of money would be playing nice and crossing over with the WWE. That's true fantasy booking because it's a dream PPV that will never happen considering the surface level competitiveness between the two companies.
I don't think the WWE sees AEW positively or negatively. They definitely don't see them as competition, and they wouldn't want to elevate the name by being in league with them. Not to mention, WWE doesn't mention AEW every show.
He spoke multiple times in his previous show, that Tony S retired and left the business after WCW ended and came back to have fun after Tony paid him more money so Tony S don't give a sh*t anymore
I live in Toronto and probably would have went but my first reaction was .. how in the hell am I going to get home on a Sunday night and how I am going to get to work in the morning.
3 hours 24 minutes of bell to bell action on the show, that's not including entrances and promos. You could have had 7 matches (Danielson's, Punk's, Omega's, Elite's, MJF's, Sting's and Storm's) in 2 hours 24 minutes, leaving 36 minutes for promos and entrances on a 3 hour show. Cut Omega's time in half and you easily get a 3 hour show and a much better match than you got in 40. No-one could name me another match off the card in its entirety anyway. Superfluous.
Thank you Jim for your review! Your always honest and I like your point of view. Went to the show with my Girlfriend both nights for collision as well. It was a bit drawn out but I’m still a fan of both wrestling networks. They did some stuff right but it could’ve been put together a bit better to not feel as long or rushed for the main events. Cornettes Drive Thru will still always be the best wrestling podcast, thanks again Jim you continue to tell the truth and keep it legit. Wish you were still commentary on smackdown, it wouldn’t be as lame right now cause you get to the point.
Funny hearing Jim talk about the CM punk match and wondering if everybody in njpw is super old when later in the card Kevin Kelly would talk about the rise of young talent in the company
When i was a kid i always wondered why Vince didn't book an interpromotional ppv of his wrestlers going up against the CMLL or AAA or NJPW or AJPW wrestlers. Now i know why.
Uhhh what about the SWS joint shows in Japan? Remember, the ones with Kouji Kitao throwing a tantrum against John Tenta and not cooperating? The WWF never did these shows with most promotions because there was no real money in it for the WWF at the time. If anything, he'd be doing the other promotions a favor. They were just too big and without the internet, it would be hard to get eyeballs on the shows States-side. SWS had the kind of ridiculous money to do pretty wild things at the time. Cross-promotional events in the territories were a mess due to egos and immaturity, not to mention the carny nature of a lot of old territorial folks. Could you trust the Memphis guy to do the job to the Texas guy? Were the AWA guys big enough to warrant the win? Who's losing to whom? Too many screwjobs?
As much as some of my personal favorites were here at forbidden door(Naito, Suzuki, Punk, Eddie) Forbidden Door has Mark Booking written all over it. It could be a fantastic cross promotional event, but 1. TK cant book and lets himself get walked all over at the media scum 2. As good as MJF is, shitting on New Japan feels tasteless and it comes off as being low hanging heel heat. That said, Danielson and Okada did in fact steal the show, i will give it that. 7/10 overall
I'll add that the build was poor, too. Don't understand why American promotions never want to give Japanese wrestlers mouthpieces/managers, either. Even great talkers like Flair was set up by and then paired with Bobby Heenan.
What do you like about Eddie Kingston? He's a big fat slob that chops people and isn't believably tough. Some of the Japanese guys were doing SUPER MEGA DEATH CHOPS or whatever the announcers were calling them, which seemed to be incredibly lightly tapping people repeatedly. If I was a wrestler there's no way in hell I'd agree to sell that shit. It's like seriously selling Orange Cassidy's kicks.
Its funny to me that both remaining members of Jurassic Express are now heels, shoot if Marko stayed they might've turned him heel too now that I think about it.
Bryan Alvarez and Vinny Vegas used to rant incessantly on how professional wrestling used to be mostly not hurting your opponent while he acted like he was being killed, but changed, for the worse, to actually hurting your opponent and your opponent hurting himself while he acted like it was all painless. But you see, Bryan and Vinny were criticizing TNA. Now that AEW is the subject of their reviews this criticism has largely disappeared. Dave Melzter used to give the Tokyo Dome stars, but he also stressed how the Japanese men needed to protect their heads more. I guess Omega just has some built in biological cushioning for his brain that Meltzer forgot to tell us about.
I mean to be fair to Alvarez he definitely talked about Kenny getting dropped on his head and has talked about how dumb that is a ton. For instance Naito vs Kota. It still gets ranted and talked about.
@@christopherpatton1964 I'll admit, Alvarez and Vegas are still easier to listen to than Meltzer, not only because Alvarez in particular is a little more consistent and a little more willing to criticize AEW, but because the two are easier on the ears in an oral format. Still, AEW has to nearly kill someone before he takes it task in the manner he took Steen and Generico to task in ROH for being safe by comparison, and he's yet to rant on AEW to the level he did TNA for say, Elix Skipper's cage walk. Dangerous, yes, but Skipper did it safely, unlike Matt Hardy falling off the forklift, Nightengale power bombing whoever that was off the stage and missing the table, Guevara cracking Hardy's head open with the chair, Alli being tossed out of the ring inside a body bag filled with tacks, etc. He once declared he was ready for TNA to go out of business and hopefully be replaced by The Urban Wrestling Federation! I'm not even saying he was wrong for having that opinion, but where's that vitriol now? But yes, Alvarez might be the best out of the Observer quartet for now. I haven't paid attention to Dr. Lucha since Dr. Wagner Junior lost his mask. Maybe Doc's still his old self.
The length of the show is a problem in another live entertainment promotions as well. UFC has a pre-show and a pre-pre-show. If you haven’t been to a live event before and turn up at the time it says on the ticket you’re there for 6 hours and asleep by the time the main eventers are on. Same with the big marquee music acts, the opening acts go in and on forever and they don’t tell the crowd when the actual show is gonna start. Not sure the exact reason for this, it might be that tickets to live events are so expensive now, they feel they have to try and give people there money’s worth by doing longer and longer shows.
I'm glad JC is finally bringing this up about the ridiculousness of the modern Machine Gun Chop. Every time I see it I think about pink belly torture which isn't all that intimidating in the scheme of things.
I would love to go back to their discussion of Dave revealing Shibata had his brain removed. I have no clue what video that was. Having it in a compilation would be helpful.
The reason for Okada and bryan being in the immobile submission is Okada was meant to tap out to the yes lock, but danielson realized with one dead hand it didn't look good, so they were calling an audible. Bryan used only his legs to bend back Okadas arm and only then did Okada tap out
I’m pretty pissed filthy Tom couldn’t even get onto the pre show like make one of them a triple threat and have him win. I’ve seen him several times at my local Indy mudshow and since I was a fan of his from his mma days I was waiting for him to actually get onto this.
Remember when the AEW fans pre-AEW bitched about how WWE ppvs were too long. Then AEW started and every ppv has been either 4 or 5 hours long. Yet I don't hear any of them bitch about ppv length now.
I'm surprised Cornette has been so quick to forgive Nightengale from power bombing whoever that was off the stage and missing the table. He's still chastising Athena for those two incidents of injuring people. Can't remember if it was two different people or the same woman at two different times. Is it because Athena defended herself by talking about what Moxley does?
The problem with wrestling fans both from aew and wwe is they will cheer and praise anything they do and if you disagree or voice your displeasure they will call you a mark. They believe every match is good and that everyone is a good wrestler
Not true friend, I love wwe but only watch the ple's cuz their shows are so long and boring,I don't watch aew at all but I don't hate it either I just listen to the reviews cuz cornette says wild and funny stuff
Not true there are some WWE diehards that will defend the WWE because they believe it can be a great global promotion but at the same time they will accept voices of displeasure about the WWE because 80% of the time Vince is at the center of it and even some WWE diehards accept “yeah we know the problem the audience of 1….Vince….”

Omg - I saw that last night.... Sting looked like he was dying after the match laying in the ring... Like, I think he was safe (can't say the same for Sammy lbs) from the splash (was still wreckless n crazy); but all that action he looked almost like he was gonna go into cardiac arrest
I thought he broke knees

@@bash8387 yeah he did land on his knees str8 onto the floor outside; & it also looked like he hit his head/chin on the 2nd table.

Dude, I love Sting but wtf 😒 TK needs to stop letting/encouraging his talent to do all these ridiculous spots (& since there's multiple spots like that per show, it severely degrades the product & moments that should be memorable i.e Taker & Foley HIC)
Smh, that shit was just sad to watch for me.
Imagine actually having the sense of a wrestler to get dropped like Kenny did and knowing it hurt and looked like it hurt and just calling an audible and not kicking out just to work everyone..nobody thinks that way anymore.everyone expected him to kick out and match keep going as planned ..shock people have them interested curious if it was real or not! It's not that hard.
Yeah that move legit looked like it killed him. Totally should’ve been the finish.
but it wasn't the planned finish 😂 marks will always be marks.
Thats one thing I would actually change about wrestling if I could... not every match has to end with the accurate finisher...once and awhile let a motherfucker lose to Rollins giving a pedigree or his falcon arrow...much more unpredictable.
Forget the "Cult of Cornette", the AEW fanbase is essentially a cult at this point
Yeah! Exactly! Tig ole bitties!!!!
Then they followed it with one of the worst Dynamites all year. But man, "fans" love crowing about that long term storytelling😂😂

He stupidly thinks he knows what real fighting is supposed to look when he doesn't even watch it. Fool thinks 80s redneck wrestling looks real lol.
Yup that was my first reaction . I fell in love with NJPW at Wrestlekingdom 9 in 2013. You definitely see Suzuki and Takahashi's age recently.
My favorite parts of Jim's podcasts is reviewing AEW shows
And he knows that. Relies on people who have a weird obsession with AEW for the clicks.
@@Doddz321You mean people who follow modern wrestling?
You bought it to turn it off? Why? If you aren't into the promotion, you're only taking your time away hate watching.
I could of used 20 more minutes of analysis on the Beach Boys hit Kokomo
MJF v Naito is the match Forbidden Door needed on any year last, this or next. Two heels, omg breaking all the rules. Has MJF finally met his match? As Naito spits in MJFs face, will the crowd cheer? Japanese trailer trash vs Preppy Boy is the match we need. Naito can still work and give MJF the match he needs
Naitos heel shit is alright but almost every other match was a multiman jus to cram as many japanese guys in the show, card would been better n prolly shorter if it was jus singles n sum tags esp w no trios belts on the card
My buddy is an AEW mark but he said it was way too long and the crowd was burnt out
Can we also just realize how unsafe it is to work at AEW?

Okada, Omega, takashi are all overrated trash. Takashit isn't great either. Sick of Japanese style it's all the same.

Kokomo is the exact moment the Beach Boys became a lame dad band. Brian is crazy for defending that one.
Not only that but I believe it's when Brian Wilson went AWOL and had no involvement. Who would listen to the Beach Boys without him?

how can they complain about wwe doing 6 hour ppvs but turn around and praise aew for 5 hours of a new japan mashup circle jerk?

And punk is just as old!
I'm shocked that Super Smash Brothers didn't get sued by Nintendo. They are just about as litigious as The Mouse.

I know it's a way to get multiple people on a card, but there are way too many 6-man tags in modern wrestling
Now i cant wait for jims review of stings table spot on dynamite after hearing what he said about this nightmare
Couldn't agree with you both more!

It could be a fantastic cross promotional event, but
1. TK cant book and lets himself get walked all over at the media scum
I give your review a 3/10 so sorry better luck next time buster
A heel shitting on a japanese wrestling company that has over-gimmicked and over americanized itself? It writes itself, I hope he would. lol.
MJF shitting on NJPW was the only worthwhile thing. He's AEW's world champion and top heel, of course he should sneer at them.
So when do Punk, FTR and Starks turn heel together and take over Collision??
"The only one that's worth a shit, on this program...literally....is Takeashit" 🤣🤣
Tanahashi reminds me of The Iron Shiek in the legends battle royale
With the photo that Brie Bella put out, there's no way that Danielson's going to be cleared in time for Wembley.

The way Jim says Ishiiiiii sounds like air coming out of a balloon in a cartoon
The length of the show is a problem in another live entertainment promotions as well. UFC has a pre-show and a pre-pre-show. If you haven’t been to a live event before and turn up at the time it says on the ticket you’re there for 6 hours and asleep by the time the main eventers are on. Same with the big marquee music acts, the opening acts go in and on forever and they don’t tell the crowd when the actual show is gonna start. Not sure the exact reason for this, it might be that tickets to live events are so expensive now, they feel they have to try and give people there money’s worth by doing longer and longer shows.

The reason for Okada and bryan being in the immobile submission is Okada was meant to tap out to the yes lock, but danielson realized with one dead hand it didn't look good, so they were calling an audible. Bryan used only his legs to bend back Okadas arm and only then did Okada tap out
