Its actually interesting that most people don't know that Rassie and Nienaber are very different as coaches.
I mean Nienaber believes that players must move the ball and get the job done in set pieces.
Where as Rassie believes in getting the job done, the style is not that important, he respects the DNA of a side but he will change it, if it doesn't work or suit the squad(Main reason he is the Director of Rugby).

I think Lancaster is wrong about our ability over the ball. Apart from Louw who won't feature of course, we have Vermeulen and our hookers Marx and Mbonambi who are world class over the ball. If they would come on either Coetzee or Van Staaden are also terrors. Even Kitshoff, Nyakane and in the backs De Allende are tough to shift at the rucks while, if there isn't much support out wide, Am and Kolbe have been known to poach a few or rather, play for the penalty.

I wish more podcasts would give the platform to in depth tactics as opposed to personalities and abilities and what a player can or can't bring to the party. Its a team game...It's a team game. Great stuff 👏😃

The fact of the matter is that the Boks under Rassie and Nienaber are still a improving/growing squad with incredible depth and many young players still to realise their full potential. Their defence has been for many years the best in the world. (No tries against the Boks in three WC Finals).
The emergence of many players of colour especially amongst the backs has added substantial speed and skill to the Boks backline.
It should be a good contest but I just cant see how the Lions forwards will compete with players like, P S Du Toit, J Wiese, Duane if available, the Du Preez Brothers, M Coetzee, Eben, Lood, Snyman, Mostert, Kitshoff, Marx, Mbonambi, T Du Toit etc.
The Boks might surprise and kick less than expected and retain possession for more phases. They have the backline to play attacking rugby and look even better/stronger and more dangerous with ball in hand than the kicking game.
Pollard, Allende and Am could make life very difficult in the midfield for the Lions by gaining the advantage line instead of excess kicking. As Stuart Lancaster said playing a full open game is suicide against the Boks as they thrive on defence and counter attack. Sorry to sound too pessimistic but the Lions are going to struggle in the lineouts and front row.
Notwithstanding the above, there are many unforeseen factors in the current game that have a major affect on the outcome of tests such as the yellow and red card rules and the interpretation of high, late, neck tackles etc.
The Lions itinerary is extremely and maybe even too demanding. Playing the Lions, Stormers, Sharks, Bulls and SA "A" in two to three weeks and then three tests against the Boks makes Hercules 12 Labour's look like a picnic. Whoever agreed to this itinerary did not consider the physical and psychological impact thereof on the players.
After all is said and done I agree with Willie John Mcbride that the Lions Tour should only take place once crowds are again allowed to attend rugby matches. Surely postponing the Lions Tour to 2022 is not impossible. With loadshedding in SA the chances are that millions of SAricans will not even be able to watch the tests live.

I didnt get why the Boks in the WC played such a negative game. So much ball on the front foot and yet they just kicked it away all the time. They called it the 'slow poison' but the could have scored alot of quick tries instead.

@@powerbite92 Yeah, it's strange. When Springboks do play direct ball in hand they can dominate teams quite easily. Best example is that home game against the All Blacks where they dominated the All blacks for 70 mins (until the subs came on).
I guess that gameplan was specific to winning the world cup because it thrives off errors and pressure.

I mentioned kwagga smith as an example as one of many. Personally i don't think he will be in the 23 but because he is versatile as he can play on the wings because of his sevens experience, and because they will go with a 6-2 split, i will not be at all surprised if he makes the 23 on match day. if not it might be van staden who is even better, if not him it could be coetzee if he proves fit. I think it is contestable that Boks don't have fetches. I think what is true is Boks don't play an out and out fetcher, but they don't have to because they have hybrid players who can carry and fetch. Marx is a Menace-better than Bismark who was no slouch. Vermulen can fetch, PS du Toit can do it, de Allende and Am both can. There was a time when I used to dispair that they would not play Brussow, he is the one out and out SA has had that I can remember and Meyer seemed to have had something against him. If memory serves me well he never lost a game against the Abs although he did not play that many. Probably his injury was the reason that 2011 ended as it did.

The Springboks haven't played as a team since 2019 but then the B and I Lions last played together four years ago. A settled squad and coaching staff with some exciting new talent vs a mixture of four home unions and an unknown quantity in the coaching staff of the Lions. There are a number of other variables combined with the English mindset in the Lions that a few points losing margin, as in Wales vs SA at RWC 2019, means you're competitve and the opponents are not so good while in fact you were dominated in every facet of play while being easily held out. Then add the belief since the early 70s that the only way to beat the Boks is to bully them physically with countless off the ball incidents while not realizing your own team then gets penalized which is going to cost your team points or territory and destroy any momentum yet your players persist with that strategy, means the Springboks will always be in the game with an even chance and the Lions will most probably throw away certain wins just like England did in 2018.
