What’s So Special About The South Africa Jackal? | South Africa v Wales & Scotland | Rugby Analysis

  • South Africa’s game plan is heavily defence dominated, but right at the heart of that defence is the way they approach the tackle area. The Jackal is the jewel in the South African defensive crown and provides them with the platform to play their game!
But, what’s the secret to the South African Jackal? Well, there’s more to it than meets the eye and in this analysis I provide some insight into the many aspects of play that revolve around the jackal. To do this the Autumn Nations Series matches against Wales and Scotland are drawn upon. Players like Siya Kolisi, Damien De Allende, Lukhanyo Am, Kwagga Smith, and Steven Kitsoff provide a number of excellent examples of how do it!

He's crucial in the try scoring too. Both tries in the world cup final went through his hands.
The brilliant no look pass to Mapimpi of course. But most people don't realise he is the one who picked up the turnover, gave it to PSdT, who in turn passed to Willie, who then passed to Cheslin.
I've been frustrated that he doesn't get the ball enough, but watching Geraint, Squidge, and WIbble break down sequences, has shown me how all of it is deliberate. Damien's job, and to a lesser extend Handre's, is to consistently attack near the breakdown/ in the middle of the field, drawing defenders, and creating that overlap/ mismatch/ split second chance where usually Willie comes in at the last second, redirects play to the side with the overlap, suddenly we're scoring.

@@monunyabidness5949 I watched an interview on that second RWC final try. He saw the ball come loose, saw Itoje about to pounce and deliberately paused before going for the ball. He knew in that split second that if Itoje had caught him with the ball he was toast. His delay caused doubt, Itoje played the wrong option and the rest is history. What a genius.
I met him shortly afterwards and he is so good to fans. What a great ambassador for the sport.

This entire year he has been brilliant at disrupting the ruck. I have proclaimed to all who would listen that there is no one who is more destructive at the ruck than Siya Kolisi. Sure, Duane and Marx get more actual steals/ turnovers at the ruck, but Siya gets those AND counterucks to allow his team mates to get those steals.
He and deAllende are *superb* at doing the little things in the ruck that get you ball. Or make the other team commit defenders to the ruck to protect the possession. The side benefit of that is it allows your defense to set.
I'm glad i'm not the only one who noticed.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the best game of the RWC in Japan (for me) was the SA v Wales semi.
Sure, it wasn't as flashy as some of the other matches, with tries flying in from all sides. But so what? This was titanic rugby, two top teams, well matched in ability, with game plans that very effectively nullified each other, going at it hammer and tongs with never a backward step.
_Proper_ rugby! Both teams could walk off that field standing tall with their heads held high.

    • @monunyabidness5949
      @monunyabidness5949 2 года назад +5

True fans of the game understand that what the Boks do is play *high IQ rugby.* Sure the box kick is tiring but when you understand why they do it, to maintain ascendency with defense, you begin to realise the genius at work in the Bok system.
They don't just spread the ball wide and throw it around. They deliberately use Handre, Damien and Duane to attack in the center of the field and suck in defenders, opening up space on the wings.
WIllie then comes into the picture at the last second redirecting play to the side with an overlap. The defense is fixated on Handre and has to mark near the ruck because he WILL run into that space. Willie's playmaking ability is highly underated. I'm not his biggest fan, but I understand WHY he is on the field.
Cheslin's try in the World Cup final went through two crucial sets of hands, Lukhanyo's at the turnover, and Willie immediately reading the overlap and attacking that space. Both Lukhanyo and Willie are underappreciated in try creation.
(Lukkhanyo gave the brilliant no look (he actually did look) assist to Mapimpi for the first try of course.)
Willie was crucial in Mapimpi's first try against Scotland as highlighted in the video. DeAllende and Kolisi had to do their part of course, run straight, hold the defender, pass at the last second.

They don't just go for the steal everytime, that's an easy way togive away penalties. They wait for the perfect stiuation; a ball carrier with no immediate support, a strong or dominant tackle, ideally behind the gain line.

For me this is the primary reason almost every team looks so sloppy against the Boks on attack. The breakdown just makes it near impossible to build an attack through phases. I'd love to see you break down the Boks "shooter" (it's been Pieter Steph, Faf, and lately Eben) and how it destabilises/ disrupts offenses, and gives the defense the time/ opportunity to now get those jackals.

I think another aspect of our "jackal" that contributes to its effectiveness is simply the shear number of players who have shown a knack for it at lower levels and carry that on to the test side. And its not just our loosies but across the centers and front row we have quite a number of turn-over merchants. Even Habana on his day was partial to having a go and its not unusal to see Kolbe or Mapimpi have a stab if the opprtunity presents itself out wide with little support.

Ah at last what were are named for, the Boks Kicks.
I must say I am impressed you did the video based almost entirely on the game that Wales lost. I take it you are Welsh which means if you are a rugby fan like me then this couldnt have been the easiest game to analyse. Although I suppose you dont see it like that but rather all the best parts of the game. And i appreciate how you saw the skillset of the Boks as a positive thing. Not "boring" like some have argued

Great analysis Butt...that was well put together. It starts with a premise...pulls you in and then sets about explaining how starting with small steps (I find Squidge overwhelming--tries to cram much in)--and adds layers and by the end the best compliment I can pay you is that I can get up here and explain to someone exactly how SA's Jackler works and they'll get it. Well done--I'm subscribed

@@GeraintDaviesGDD Cool man...I've played (flyhalf) and coached at provincial level (in the 80's). These days rugby is far more tactical--then you played what was in front of view (1974 Lions were the best at this). Todays rugby when played intelligently is high impact stress chess....its easy to be tactical till you get hit by a Kolisi and a Etsebeth in a double tackle then its just survival. Whoever keeps their head best in that situation wins (Richie McCaw was a master at this). Which is why its difficult to play against SA when they are switched on. You might know what the tactics are supposed to be but there's a huge difference seeing the moves on a whiteboard in the shed and trying to execute them when you see a D'Allende in the corner of your eye lining you up with Smith or Marx behind them ready to Jackal. I could go on forever about rugby. When's your next video...AB French game?

As a SA'an I tend to criticize our players by kicking away ball possession, but you made me realize there is more to it. It's all about risk management and if such a strategy works more often than not, why not. At the end of the game it comes down to that one extra point. Love the sport. Love the tiny Island nations that brings it all and the British Isles (plus France) that raised the game again just that little bit more.

You have the coolest accent ever good sir! Great analysis so much more to the bok gameplan than what it gets credit for. A lot of kicking, forward and breakdown dominance yes- but have a look in the tries column at the end of every tournament, Boks are always up there with their killer backs too. Next years World Cup going to be epic at least 5 sides can win it!
