  • Reigning Six Nations Champions Wales fell to a heavy defeat in Dublin to the hands of an Irish team full of confidence and quality.
    This rugby analysis drills down into some of the details behind Ireland's attack in an attempt to provide you with enough information to decide whether Ireland's attack is good enough to win the 6 Nations 2022!
    The experiment of Josh Adams at 13 doesn't appear to have worked as well as hoped! But Mack Hansen and Andrew Conway were both outstanding for Ireland. Sexton continues to pull the strings and it's hard to see an Irish backline without him!

    So, Ireland look like they’re continuing their form from the autumn. But what do you think about their chances this Six Nations?

    • @genericusername370
      @genericusername370 2 года назад +4

      I think losing Sexton will be too much to overcome in Paris. Carberry was good in the Autumn but I wasn't impressed with his cameo off the bench last week. At 78:32 in the match Ireland look ready to score another try but Carberry takes shuffles sideways and gets tackled and this wasn't the only moment he didn't look sharp.
      Would like to hear your thoughts on Ireland's chances without Sexton Geraint?

    • @kd2239
      @kd2239 2 года назад +5

      @@genericusername370 - Yes, as an irishman i agree. The key to irelands game right now is Jamison Gibson Park and Sexton combination. The speed of the recycle and phases is just devastating. Sexton takes the ball really flat and aggressive and defences just seem to freeze and struggle to know where the ball is going. Carberry sometimes takes the pace out of the attack probably because his lack of experience at the highest level means he cant think fast enough hence he sometimes just holds onto the ball drifts across and tries to use his pace to get around someone. That will never work against a set defence. Nowadays it takes multiple quick aggressive phases to pull defences out of shape, i dont think Carberry is quite at that pace to direct each phase perfectly in quick succession. Sexton is ruthless and fully understand how to pull defences and manipulate runners and fix certain defensive pods. Its a rugby intelligence thing and speed of mind. I've been a rugby fan all my life and honestly i struggle to follow it in slowmo with Geraint Davies breaking it all down for me. Rugby is a crazy complex game. Takes a big rugby brain to run the attack.

    • @genericusername370
      @genericusername370 2 года назад +1

      @@kd2239 Yeah Sexton is one of the best 10s to ever do it, I have my fingers crossed for Carberry but I think the gulf in quality between the two is too large, especially since Carberry hasn't played a lot of Rugby recently.

      Yes its possible that carbury my not be able to work the combinations but this is a well worked machine with each man known what he has to do so i hope he finds his comfort sone, if not jack is there to back him up and may cause the French a few headaches, whatever i think its actually a good thing we need to know what's wrong to fix it! better now than at the world cup don't you think?

    Even giving you you your dues as an absolutely top tier creator of video analysis, one small thing makes you stand out for me :
    When you highlight/describe something, you actually slow down or pause the action long enough for us mere mortals to see what you mean, but not so long as to make it boring.
    The number of analysts perfirming at your level (for free public consumption anyway) is tiny, but almost without fail I'd need to rewatch their videos or at least repeatedly pause them to catch what they're referring to.

      If you think of the standard Sexton overlap that gives the team an extra wide player in attack but then realise that it's actually happening twice in one move (with the SH or winger playing in field) it's really impressive. Getting isolated out wide is a huge problem in attack but if your men are drilled to fold around and at the same time provide one flat and one deep passing option it's no surprise that Ireland can find space to run into regularly.

  • @kd2239

    Been a rugby fan all my life, but rugby analysis like this just blows my mind. When its broken down like that and explained in such clear detail its absolutely facinating. Like how can any team keep their advantage when every little detail of their strategy is broken down and explained like that?! As an irish rugby fan i think thats why we never do well in world cups. We get a system going that works really well but then by the time the world cup rolls around we have been well and truly figured out. Brilliant video though.
    Edit: 3:37 - "Caelen Doris is square to the line and importantly passes over his outside leg which along with James Ryan running a sharp inward line fixes three defenders and gives Sexton and Keenan all the space they need". That right there is absolutely brilliant. Especially noticing he passed over his outside leg. Just brilliant.

    Hello Geraint, always spot on analysis and delightfull accent for my French ears. How yesterday's match is fitting with this video? IMHO aggressive rucking from the French madeIreland put more men in the first contacts, this slowed down the pass and reduced options for the next move.

    Good to see you back with some analysis, hope everything is good on your end. Ireland were very good, and far more adaptable than previous years, eventhough if you watch some of the previous years games, that the shapes and the lines are almost exactly the same, but just look under practiced and forced, this year those shapes seem much more natural and played much closer to the gainline. I think they definitely factored Josh Adams being played in the centre's into their tactics for this game, because he defended very much like a winger playing centre, so that try where they managed to isolate him on the one side of the scrum you felt that if the carrier coming back the other way held the ball long enough he would get caught too square, as he would normally try and keep the outside shoulder and trust inside defenders. Obviously the shape would have been challenging to any centre, but you wonder if they would have even tried it with a more traditional midfield.

France apparently did not show their hand much against Italy with a view to not giving away too much to the Irish for tomorrow. The sharp inward diagonal line that James Ryan is running at 3:43, must one always run a sharp inward diagonal line in that situation when you throw the pull-back pass? Because if I look at the way munster attack under Graham Rowntree and Mike Prendergast, the runner who place the role of James Ryan, doesn't run an inward diagonal line, he runs a straight line, as long as the line goes into the gap between the defenders eventually. Is that wrong to do? Must you only run the inward diagonal line? Or is it fine to run both types of lines?

New Zealand has always had great athletes but Ireland were smart enough to really build the best team game. So structured and accurate and lots of options building multi skilled players. I only hope NZ rugby drives the same. Despite the All Blacks knocking out Ireland in the World cup, Ireland are still the better rugby nation in my opinion. NZ teams are not applying this style rugby enough at all tier levels.
