  • What are you wearing? Where was it made? "Made" probably makes you think "stitched," but what happened before that? Where did the fabric come from? Did your shirt start on a farm -- as a cotton plant, sheep's wool, a silkworm, petroleum, or a recycled plastic water bottle? These questions matter. Why is it that we can walk into a grocery store and make all kinds of choices about how our food is made and what's in it, but we can't make any of those same choices about clothing?
About Heather Franzese, senior manager at Fair Trade USA:
Heather has been working for more than 12 years to improve the lives of vulnerable farmers and workers in global supply chains. Last year, she launched Fair Trade USA's Fair Trade Certified™ Apparel & Linens program in the U.S. Heather brings together industry experience managing CSR for Columbia Sportswear Company's licensed and collegiate categories, a fundraising track record of channeling $4 million in social impact philanthropy to Fair Trade certification, and field experience working with small-scale farmers for the Peace Corps in Mali.
This talk is part of Session Three: Money for TEDxFruitvale, which was held on October 14, 2011 at Mills College in Oakland, CA. The conference's theme was Harvesting Change, and it focused on farmworkers, labor and other social justice movements, and fair labor practices in business.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event:
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I'm more likely to support the workers that are being paid/treated right, no matter where they are....I just hope for a very exceptionally reliable way to guarantee that their treatment and wages are audited regularly and, thus, confirmed to be fair...

"They don't say 'we're paying all of our unskilled workers a living wage across the board regardless of output or productivity'. Instead they say "we're gonna give our workers the best training and opportunities for advancement so that they can receive their highest income potential.'"
Uh...this is a good thing how? When is a lack of minimum wage EVER a good thing?

No one thinks it's a good thing. We just don't have the money to pay more.
I buy 1 1/2 pairs of shoes, 4 pairs of jeans, and like 4 new shirts a year. The rest second hand. That's about a yearly budget under 200 dollars. Until I get more money, they cant get more money.
Until these clothing stores managers open up banks, their stuck.

Lol....is it just me or is the fact that my environment here (9 yrs later) is reflecting the very abnormal sound/tech issues a pretty weird thing? Just me? 🤷‍♀️....just thought I'd ask...

Bonuses instead of a fair wage isn't good... it's BS. Not buying American Apparel.
