AMSTERDAM FOOD TOUR | Trying out INDONESIAN and SURINAMESE FOOD!

  • We've had our fair share of Dutch food in Amsterdam but we thought it was time to highlight and try out two incredibly popular cuisines in the city that have quite deep and dark ties to Dutch colonial history. We are of course trying Indonesian and Surinamese food in Amsterdam. The Dutch empire stretched across the globe and as a result of that, a sizeable diaspora from both countries have made their way into Amsterdam, opening restaurants of their home cuisines.
So in this video, we check out Albina in De Pijp for an epic Surinamese feast, and Desa to try the famous Indonesia rijsttafel (rice table)! We even have a few cheeky Dutch street food bites along the way!
    Enjoy!

For the rijst table experience I would recommend Tujuh Maret in the Utrechtsestraat for any new comer to Indonesian food. The presentation of the dishes is from mild to medium to spicy. They serve a small 24 veggie and meat dishes and it is more than enough to serve 3 people. There is a smaller version with a smaller number of dishes with only two spiciness levels. There is also a veggie rijst table. Minum is for two persons to order.

Moksi meti means "mixed meat". You can have it with rice or noodles and usually consists of bbq pork belly, cha sieuw, bbq chicken or duck and chinese sausages.

Sate with peanutsauce is like one of the unofficial national dishes of The Netherlands. Its everywhere, so not just in Surnamese or Indonesian places. Most snackbars (diner style cheal fried food places) , lunch cafe's and casual restaurants and so forth have it on the menu. Its usually eaten with fries instead of rice with of course plenty of mayo. All supermarkets have pre-coocked versions of it, either frozen or in TV dinner style microwave meals, although those are obviously not the best, but just to show you how omnipresent this dish is in the country.

@@locavore_eats Yeah, its just very tasty. That has everything to do with the... well... terrible actual Dutch cuisine. Part of it has to do with the Protestant religion that teaches that food is not there to enjoy but to provide nutrition. On top of this the reality is that most girls in the 19th century enjoyed education in the many "housekeeping" schools. These schools all had the same cooking lessons from the same book which taught them to cook healthy, seasonal and cheap which resulted in a very bland cuisine. Avoid Dutch food at all costs because it comes down to boiled potatoes, boiled vegetables and if you are lucky perhaps a meatball. All the actual good Dutch food comes from the colonies.

7:24 Sambal Piccalilli. This sambal has a fresh, sweet and sour taste, but at the same time is very spicy due to the addition of Madame Jeanette peppers. In addition to Madame Jeanette peppers, the sambal also contains vegetables, onions, garlic, mustard and vinegar.
8:20 Moksi meti is a popular Surinamese-Chinese meat dish - both in the country itself and in the Netherlands. It literally means mixed (moksi) meat (meti) and consists of roasted chicken, two kinds of roasted pork and/or sausage (fachong). Moksi meti is usually served with noodles or rice

When it comes to rijsttafel, I recommend Warung Padang Lapek in The Hague, they served THE BEST rijsttafel in the Netherlands! Me and my friends always go there every time we’re craving for Indonesian food.
Btw, rijsttafel is still common in Indonesia as “hidang”, usually it’s served in Padang restaurant and in special events such as wedding or celebrations.

Good choice. Albina is my favorite surinamese restaurant and I have tried many many many in the Netherlands. (although it was a little better 20 years ago) Piccalilly is my go to when eating moksi meti with tjauwmin. Roti is best with lamb. Drink with Dawet or pineapple fernandes. Bojo as desert. But good to see you got to eat some great food.

6:15 If I'm not mistaken baka bana is inspired by pisang goreng, yes. Which is also fried banan, but not necessirely in peanut sauce. Instead you usually get it with sweet sour sauce. And the banana itself is different. Also, peanutsauce is Indonesian, yes. But also very Dutch. We eat it on fries (or chips, if you Bri'ish) for example.
12:55 See? A good example of peanutsauce on fries. We call it Friet Oorlog, Translates as Fries War. Don't ask why, we don't know either. It's just how it is. Patat Frites à la Guerre :)

Sorry but that roti looks terrible. It looks like the sauce has cornstarch in it, which has no place in roti (unless it's made by Chinese). Please don't go to a Chinese to get roti, but go to a real Hindustani restaurant. But don't go to Roopram, it's overrated. It used to be great though (10-20 years ago).
