As a Chinese person who visits Hong Kong and the Guangdong Province on a regular basis (where dim sum originated), I can legitimately say that Vancouver's dim sum is top notch!

A lot of restaurants don't even include prices on menus they list on their own websites. Why? Because prices are subject to change at any time. in mandarin chinese its shao mai and in a lot of American restaurants its spelled shumai, so honestly the pronunciation depends on where shes from I guess

Chef Tony is great but technically it is in Richmond which is a suburb of Vancouver. As a Richmond resident I must say they have the best dim sum restaurants in our lower mainland. As it is where our airport is located very easy to get to and for our jet lagged foodie probably should have been the first stop. Mikey would have a food Fiesta here for sure.
That all looked fantastic...especially Chef Tony! A friend and I are headed to Vancouver in July, so this was a welcome video! Unfortunately, we will be tied up for most of the day while we are there (doing some yoga training). Any other suggestions for places to go later in the day/earlier in the evening would be great! We are training on Granville Island and staying in Yaletown.

The day that I go to live in the USA and decide to go to a Chinese restaurant, I will have to make friends of that origin so that they can recommend me and accompany me to eat some of their gastronomy. What I just saw in the video I really liked, and also with her on board, who has a good sense of humor, I enjoyed the video, the presentation of those three Chinese restaurants was phenomenal. Great dim sum journey. I would suggest trying Red Star in the South Granville/ Marpole area, which is similar to Chef Tony. A homier and authentic dim sum place would be Western Lake Chinese Seafood Restaurant.
If you come back try Kirin's Richmond location (which I think might be the best) and Fishman's terrace! Also I have a big soft spot for Cindy's Palace in East Van - their taro dumplings are bomb because they put a bit of the mustard/Portugese sauce in around the meat.
I grew up in Vancouver, and moved to NYC. In the 17 years I've lived here, I have gone for dim sum less than 5 times in NY. I just wait till I visit home to Van for my dim sum fix. There's many more good spots to go to than these too!!
I lived in Fairview Slopes for 27 months. It's between Cambie & Granville going East to West & 16th & 6th St going North to South. Broadway is the main street that cuts through the neighborhood.
The dim sum at Pink Flamingo is top shelf, been eating there for 35 years, Easily one of the best in Van ! They moved locations in the past couple years, due to a fire I believe. Down on kingsway ave.
And order the chicken bun . Black pepper pastry , sweet and sour pork with dry scallop fried rice my fav items at dynasty ..... u need to go back there and try these delicious things
To really know how well a dimsum restaurant serves its food u really need to order the deep fried dishes not the steamed one which is easy to master. The fried and and stir-fried dishes are really hard to make decent.
Even though Chef Tony looks interesting, and it would taste good, it looks like a great way to charge A LOT more. I'd likely want to try it, but I'd go back to my 'regular' stuff. I dunno.. maybe I'm gettin' old.
Great video, going to Vancouver next Month for my annual food trip. Next time try Sea Harbour Seafood which is across from the front entrance of the River Rock casino. I have been making a pilgrimage to Vancouver for many years trying out all kinds of restaurants and types of food. Sea Harbour is one of those places that I plan my return flight home around so that I can stop there on my way to the Airport. now for the interesting part... Seafood Harbour IS Chef Tony! It was his first Restaurant that he opened with his brother, still there, I believe?
I went to Tim Ho Wan in Las Vegas couple months ago. While it was ok , they only have limited amount of dim sum to choose. Price is expensive compare to most dim sum place, 7 items came out to $72.

Let me tell you how NOT to basic if you are new to Dim Sum. DO NOT under any circumstances, show up after 11 am if you do not want to wait forever for a table and never like after 2 (because they tend to close midday). People are waiting outside the door at 9: 30, and you will get the best top notch and quick service rolling in between 10am and 10:30am. After 11 the waiting area of most Dim Sum places on a weekend looks like an airport waiting area after a snow storm that's grounded an entire airport during Christmas week. Wake up, get there early, and you will not be sorry.

I love dim sum. It is the perfect meal and beats any western food style brunch buffet.
