Larry Bird. My man. Maybe the most underrated athlete ever. Hell, nowadays he might even be the most underrated player ever. These kids just don't know.
These kids don't have a clue - Bird was from a different planet. Whoever leaves him out of their TOP 10 all time - just walk away from the conversation. He gave EVERYBODY "that bizness". In his prime - He could pass like Magic, He could score like Mike, he could play every position like Lebron, He could shoot like Steph. He could do everything and anything on a basketball court. He would have been a Top 10 player at 4 positions.
Larry was solidly athletic before injuries slowed him down. Obviously he didn't soar like Jordan, but few did. Conversely, Magic Johnson didn't exactly soar through the air either, but no one questioned his athleticism. People buy too much into stereotypes. Some think Bird was this guy who couldn't walk and chew gum at the same time, yet used his powerful brain to rule over the NBA. Bird was smart on the court, but if brains was all it took, the NBA would be full of players from the Ivy League, and Stanford. Bird was blessed with many physical gifts that allowed him to be an dominant player. There's more to athleticism than straight ahead speed, and vertical leap.
GREAT description. LB was a solid, if not spectacular athlete. As good or better than half the league, esp for a pretty tall guy. Who could also adjust his shot in the air or turn it into a pass.
MJ and Bird are very close friends and MJ always said the toughest player he ever played against was Bird!!! Bird was the def the most exciting white player ever.
Anyone who EVER believed Bird couldn't run or jump should watch this, as I saw pretty much everything here as it happened, and yes...he was was that fucking good; He would throw it down on ANYONE.
ah man Big Daddy Kane with Larry! man the memories when the NBA was fun to watch....and we'd go to the park after watching and have long live the kane in the deck
Pistol 8 Kev I think in fact he wasn't too much athletic, fisically talking. He was too strong, tremendously smart and with a great ability. in fact he is one my favorite players, or even the most. But I think he could apreciated the gym work and that could helped him against the impacts in his body and the injuries. Sorry about my english.
His back got fucked in his prime, the dude was broken and could barely move yet played out there. That's the memories people have of Bird, his broken body with no pain killers, hobbling around.
@@someguy4046 listen man, you don't make it to the NBA if your not athletic... Bird could dunk from the foul line coming into the league... Bull Russel and Pat Riley both saw him do it.
Before the double ankle surgery that robbed him of lateral quickness and some of the vertical he did have, Larry Bird, especially from late 79 to about 85, 86 his first step and quickness was respectable enough that you could move him to " Two guard," alongside Tiny Archibald, with McHale, Parish and Cedric Maxwell as your front line; Not a bad team. Another thing for people who don't realize that " hand-eye " coordination is part of athleticism, Bird had the best EVER, and many of contemporaries like Bernard Kind and Dr. J have said this many times. It's a shame people missed out on such a once-in-a-lifetime talent, like Jordan, Chamberlain, Magic. Basketball was really amazing to watch then, and Larry, along with Magic and Micheal made it " Fantastic " to watch.
@@Hoopfan83 yep, and energy conservation.. coaches don't endorse dunking when a layup will do, it takes a lot out of you to dunk, looks great, but doesn't win you rings.. even Jordan slowed down on dunks when in the 90's , pretty rare in his prime, especially in the playoffs, but he was fresh for that 4th quarter, ready to make a clutch play when the opposition was exhausted.. so cool to see Larry throw down on his opposition here though.. he was way quicker than people let on ..
Today's science is shit hype mostly unless they gotta put you back together. Maybe they coulda done something for his back. Or maybe if he just didn't injure it.
Damn it!!!! Once again I missed out. Bird Dr J Magic Michael and those early and mid eighties stsrs made the game awesome sauce. I hate that I was poor and only got this guy at the end when he was already the Evil Kineval of the hardwood.
Bird was quite a good athlete in his younger days in the NBA. He had the athleticism and intelligence to dominate the league for a number of years, until injuries slowed him down. He was a bigger Luka Doncic with a better shooting touch.
Larry's back hurt him in his later years. That's why he rarely dunked after 1987. He was 6'9", so he had the height to go along with a decent vertical.
Yes, kids, one of the best kept secrets in NBA history is that Bird could facialize your bigs. We're talking about elite bigs, that 99.99% of adult men couldn't dream of getting any kind of a shot off against. Video don't lie.
Bird had a 28" vertical jump which was well above the NBA average at the time. But I guess it was more fun for announcers and reporters to say he couldn't jump.
From 1979-1983 Bird was in his athletic prime. He wasn't the highest flyer (28 inch vert) and he certainly wasn't the fastest runner (5.17 40 yd time) but he used what he had better than most players and rarely did any player put as much effort on the court as Bird. He got the the job done. It wasn't until he got the back injuries from paving his mothers home when he had a massive drop off in his athletic ability due to the immense pain he was constantly in. Like I said Bird was never a stand out athlete but I'm tired of the narrative that he was "just some unathletic white dude."
I don't think Larry Bird dunked much because he had a bad back for a lot of his career, and most people wouldn't even play in that condition . If his back was good he would've have played with a lot more athleticism.
Surprised? Y’all act like the man was paralyzed from the waist down. Why in the world do you think he is considered a great? He was a highly skilled athlete.
It's because for a 6'9 small forward he didn't dunk very often, or drive to the basket. He's definitely athletic but obviously in comparison with a lot of other player's it's not his strength.
Larry dunked like he was carrying a lunch pail to work but that's who he was as a player, he gave everything he had and with his high basketball IQ he was second to none on the court.... Get Er Done....
I think you got to give a prime Larry Bird a nba2K rating of 75 for his dunks and give him the straight arm dunk package and a 84 his contact dunk ability
Stop talking basketball. You are a joke lmao. Magic can actually shoot mid range and 3pt shots unlike Simmons. Magic was a great free throw shooter too

Bird could jump as high as Karl Malone, and I never heard anybody considering Malone unathletic.
szeszesember Was fast on the break too, you can see him neck and neck with people then blow ahead of them to dunk.
Cuz he’s white and they have to play down how good he was. If he was a bit more athletic and a little quicker Larry would hands down be the best ever
The biggest difference between Bird and Malone is that Bird smoked cigarettes at halftime while Malone injected himself at halftime.

Larry LEGEND!!!!!!
So much for Bird couldn't jump huh? When he wanted to he could fly like the Bird he was before his back let him down. Thanx for the vid
His back didn't let him down. He injured it trying to repave his mother's driveway and property himself.

Nigga he was 6’9 with a 28 inch vertical
You don't have to dunk when you can light it up anywhere on the court, and Bird was definitely lighting everybody up.
One of the best dunking small forwards of all time :-)

bird was not a fancy player he was a tough player did not play for the glanm he played tough and got the job done baby a highly skilled legand.
Bird played like he was in the playground. So many trick shots behind the back fakes and step backs, tons of highlights of him playing with his food.
Bird and McHale would dunk a lot until about 1988. Parish always dunked when the chance presented itself.
I saw the dunk at 2:04 in person; he had a triple double that night in San Antonio.
Playing above the rim
The put back dunk at :43 was amazing!!!
At 0:14. That was my favorite dunk. I remember before he hurt his back how good he was on the break.

Bird had a 28" vertical jump which was well above the NBA average at the time. But I guess it was more fun for announcers and reporters to say he couldn't jump.
The dunk on Caldwell Jones is the one that shocked me at first I thought Bird dunked on Darryl Dawkins which really would have shocked me.

How are you surprised that a 6'9" 1/2 athlete can dunk?
Oh yeah in case you didn’t know, the goat 🐐 also could dunk as well. There’s nothing he can’t do!
Damn… an entire video of bird foo f what w shine says he can’t do.
Most of these are before he had his horrible back.
