    Paris RER is one of the most interesting suburban train system in the world thanks to its variety of trains and through-running services in underground tunnels. Can you think of any similar suburban rail system ?

      @ajf3202 2 года назад +3

      Tbf london has some underground mainline systems. We got crossrail which runs underground from Paddington to Custom House, Thameslink from Blackfriars to St Pancras, and part of the Overground from Surrey Quays to Dalston Junction, and Great Northern from Moorgate to Finsbury Park

      Almost all brussels RER lines also go underground in certain places. But usually it's only for 1 or 2 stops.

      The Elizabeth line and also Thameslink. It’s not as much as the Parisian network nor does it have a big variety, but it’s still nice.

    I know the RER is the commuter train service for the Paris suburbs. But riders can also use it within Paris like an express subway? Same fare?

    • @central-city

      Yes within the limits of zone 1 you can use the metro single ticket

    • @KyrilPG

      The RER isn't really a commuter train. It's the regional express heavy metro network (its original name was in fact "Métro Express Régional").
      It's like the Elizabeth line in London, except that there are 5 lines, and trains are mostly double-decker (on 4 lines out of 5, and all lines in a couple years).
      All lines run through the core city in deep underground tunnels, except line C, which runs in shallower tunnels and trenches through the core.
      When remaining roughly within the core, a basic metro ticket works for any RER lines, and interchanges with metro lines are included.
      The most "RER-typical" lines are A, B and now also E, with gigantic underground "cathedral" stations with large volumes, 225 to 260 meter long platforms (and trains), and double-decker trains on most lines.
      It's quite the epitome of mass rapid transit, with a particular emphasis on "mass", as some trains carry up to nearly 4000 passengers
      RER A is also the busiest line in Europe.
      The difference with commuter trains is that RER lines are all cross-city, they use massive fast accelerating / decelerating trains, and the frequency is like a metro, without mid-day interruptions, nor pendular scheduling.
      It really is an express heavy metro with regional scope.
      Also, several lines have autopilot systems to allow for short intervals and separation like on metro lines.
      The most impressive in this respect is line A, where you can frequently see a train entering the station while the previous one hasn't even cleared the platform yet. So, in stations during rush hour, trains can be separated by only few dozen meters.
      It was mostly built by repurposing former commuter lines that ended in central mainline stub stations, upgrading these lines for mass rapid transit services, creating new ones, and linking the groups of branches on each side of the core city with wide and deep tunnels, plus building huge stations on the new underground central trunks.
      All 5 lines have their own central section tunnels, except for only a portion of lines B & D in the center where they share the same tunnel between 2 stations (interlining).
      It's not like S-Bahn networks where multiple lines often share one or two tunnels through the core.

    Voici la chanson des RER:
    RER A, pas toujours à l’heure. RER B, souvent en retard. RER C, très lent. RER E, train supprimé. Mais RER D, toujours en retard, train supprimé, colis suspect, les gens sur les rails, c’est la pagaille !!!

    Looking forward to the day when all the trains running on the RER lines get the new IDFM livery so as to have a more uniform network. It sucks lookin at so many different types of liveries being applied to the exact same type of trains, that are serving the exact same route. It doesn't even make sense!
    In the coming years RER lines B, D & E are gonna get completely new latest generation trains, but it's a pity line C won't get any new trains.

    i only rode on the RER last July and it was only from gare du Nord to Jardin du Luxembourg i didn't notice but do the RERs have toilets ?, in Portgal we have a RER type for the the city of Porto "CP Urbanos do Porto" that connects to the Aveiro District since 2002 and the normal trains to my home town no longer stopped there, they were replaced by the yellow trains and they don't have bathrooms. and going from Esmoriz to Vizela it's almost 2h with one switch in Porto Campanhã the only chance to go to the bathroom :v.

      "Ile-de-France mobilités" is the new regional entity that supervises every public transport networks in the region. Its boss, who is also the president of the parisian region (and a gigantic a**hole), decided back in 2017 to repaint all the trains, buses and trams. It was a political maneuver that completely backfired by the way.

    • @KyrilPG
      @KyrilPG Месяц назад

      @@benjamin4919 In what way did it backfire?
      The livery switch wasn't a political maneuver, the point of the IDFM livery is to part with operator-specific liveries because lines will now be awarded to competing operators.
      It also unifies everything under a common entity that is the transport authority.
      This unification under a clear regional transit authority, the homogenization of the different liveries, and the standardization of comfort & air conditioning was also necessary.
