"With autumn closing in." Wow. That one line adds a whole dimension to this song, which is otherwise about carefree teenage horniness. But that line is a cold-water reminder that those times don't last forever.
He writes such descriptive lyrics, poetic really. " I woke last night to the sound of thunder , how far off I sat and wondered. started humming a song from 1962 , ain't it funny how the night moves , when you don't seem you have as much to lose , strange how the night moves , with autumn closing in" . Poetry.
Bob was talking about more than just losing his virginity, the whole song is about that teenage experience (backroom, alleys, or trusty woods). and then about getting older and trying to recapture those feelings "with Autumn closing in"
I was a high school senior in 79-80 and my boyfriend (later husband) and I did a lot of night movin'. And just like the song, now I can hear a song from that time and it takes me way back, before it all got so, so awful
"With autumn closing in" is a man approaching the latter part of his life and thinking back about his high school years and the girl he dated then and the times and experiences they shared.

Best part of the song - you think you’re listening to a song about coming of age, exploring your sexuality as a teenager - then, in that break - suddenly, the whole song isn’t just a reverie about youth - it’s a meditation on the entire life cycle.
Losing his virginity, yes, but now looking back many years later, as autumn is closing in, he is remembering. I remember this song as a teenager, and now, as MY autumn is moving in, it is so sweet to remember the time when anything was possible and I was so excited about my future. I remember.
When I was a student at U of M nearly 40 years ago, Bob came into a bar that had live bands and just sat a table by himself to enjoy the music. Then, I thought it was cool of him because I went there all the time and the music was good. Now, I would freak out because his songs are more meaningful to me than when I was in Ann Arbor.
"I woke up last night to the sound of thunder. How far off I sat and wondered. Started humming a song from 1962" This to me is the pinnacle of the song. Totally agree. Just a spectacular song. No one tells a story like Bob. It's a shame "Like a Rock" was sold and run into the ground by Chevy. It's a masterpiece in being a teenager and early 20-womething.

Saw him in San Diego on his farewell tour. His voice has actually mellowed & smoothed out quite a bit. Still nice, but no mistaking that old raw sound. One of the great songwriters of our time.
It's not so much about losing his virginity as it is the song of life. When you're young/ preteen that is your Spring. As you grow into your teens/ 20's that is the Summer of your life. As you enter midlife (50's) you enter the Autumn of your life. The time in your life when you realize you are closer to the end than the beginning. When your health starts failing and you are more aware of problems facing you. Waiting on the thunder. The Winter.

Listening to Bob now-a-days for me is like a punch in the stomach combined with getting a new puppy... bittersweet cuz I'm really starting to get older(Autumn closin' in), yet reminiscent of those teenage + years, carefree days and nights with nothing but the bright future ahead(Sweet Summertime)... Thanks Jamal!
I was very fortunate to see Brother Bob :) twice. Both in the Boston Garden. He loved Boston and recorded songs for one of his live album at the Garden (Boston not NYC). This is my favorite song. He didn't play it. I was crushed. Then he came out for a FIVE SONG ENCORE (!!!!!) and Night Moves was the fist encore song. Tears were shed. I have never cried at a concert before or after. He is SO fabulous!!
Funny how our life cycle matches seasons. A little kid in spring just waiting for the good times to start, summer time is your teenage years and 20s, autumn comes in your 30s-50's then winter comes and it's all downhill til death.
The summertime of life, moving from childhood to adolescence to manhood in a snap, learning as he goes... and he is getting older and feeling nostalgic because he thinks autumn is closing in, and his best days may be gone... kind of melancholy imo.
That's the thing. When you are young, you hear Bob singing his soul out and say: "Yeah, that's pretty good." When you get older though and have experienced some things in life, you listen to Bob and say: " I fell you, brother! I feel you."
Jamel_AKA_Jamal, you're going to have a ball with Bob Seger! He's one of the greatest storytellers when it comes to music, and every one of his songs are amazing! I look forward to seeing more of your reviews of Bob Seger!
Minot AFB North Dakota heading in my dad's 1978 Dodge Monaco Brougham to the BX. He was driving I was front seat passenger. My dad actually said when Bob broke down to the speaking part , " Nice how he did that. " my Dad was not a rock-pop guy so it floored me he was even listening. A quiet military officer who let us control the station selection in the car. A good dad, indeed. Missing him since 1995. Does not seem possible a man so strong had one massive heart attack and was in the next realm.
He sings "waiting on the thunder" The next line "I woke last night to the sound of thunder". This shows that he is reminiscing about his youth which is now gone since now, Autum is closing in.
The song was written about him pursuing a relationship with an Italian girl who’s boyfriend was in the military while he was a teenager. The boyfriend returned & she Married him leaving bob with a broken heart. The song is about him as a teenager but remembering it as an adult.
A few weeks ago I heard this song stripped down an it brought me to tears. Dunno why it hit like it did,I've heard it hundreds of times. Autumn is definitely closing in as I get deeper into my 40's.
This is back when artists were “artful” now a pop/rock/rap singer would just go straight X rated with the lyrics without any poetry Being a bit older now, I see and understand other aspects of the lyrics for example when he sings “with autumn closing in”. The song is a nostalgic celebration of the “summer” of life and all too soon we experience the “autumn” of our lives

In the early 60's here in Farmington, MI. I was at a basement party and the band was Bob Seger and the Last Heard. Had no idea what he would go on to be. Good Times!
First heard this in the 1970’s - now that I’m in my late 50s I think I truly understand the lyrics toward the end of the song. God bless all - thanks for the reaction to this amazing song 🙂
That's definitely a scorcher. I know we all thrust a ton of requests and suggestions Jamel's way, it has to be over-bearing. Yeah, I'd love to see his response to "Against The Wind", "Travelin' Man/Beautiful Loser", "Mainstreet", "Roll Me Away". Jamel seems more than game on any band, so maybe we'll see more Seger here. :)
All y’all are reminding me how many damn good songs Seger has. Legend, and under-appreciated big-time in critics’ circles. He’s basically America’s Van Morrison.

@@HappyHumanist369 I'm not sure if Glenn ever sang it. A couple of producers/songwriters wrote the song for the movie. That's why Bob gets co-writing credit on the song with the two producers. After it hit #1 Glenn sent Bob a message saying he's glad the #1 hit was from another Michigan native. @Zac Sharp I feel you Zac...
wait till you change it to winter closin' in.
Awesome!
The transition of the meaning of "night moves" makes this one of the greatest songs in Rock.
Thinking about your teenage years and the angst...at almost 70...this song means more each passing year.
OLD TIME ROCK AND ROLL From 1978 ,, One of Bobs BIGGEST SONGS
The term to describe Bob Seger's voice is a "Whisky Voice"
With a hint of cigar smoke.
Well said men!
And the faint rustle of worn leather
Saw him in San Diego on his farewell tour. His voice has actually mellowed & smoothed out quite a bit. Still nice, but no mistaking that old raw sound. One of the great songwriters of our time.
@@GlowingBentley He most certainly one of our greatest songwriters. 100 percent.
"She was a black haired beauty with big dark eyes..."🎶🎶
Love me some Bob Seger😍❤
And points of her own, sittin way up high. Love me some Bob Seger too.
Seger's "Down on Main Street" is sweet and sad and just might make you cry.
His song Like a Rock was used for years in Chevy Truck commercials, so you've heard his voice for sure.
Like a cock, I was strong as I could be! lol
I remember those commercials I thought they were badass
It's not so much about losing his virginity as it is the song of life. When you're young/ preteen that is your Spring. As you grow into your teens/ 20's that is the Summer of your life. As you enter midlife (50's) you enter the Autumn of your life. The time in your life when you realize you are closer to the end than the beginning. When your health starts failing and you are more aware of problems facing you. Waiting on the thunder. The Winter.
Thunder in the winter?
Absolutely!
Couldn't have said it better! 💖
Yep
@@ProMrLecoq01 you've never seen a snow srorm with thunder and lightning? I've seen 3 or 4, it usually ends up dropping a shitload of snow.
They're best at night, saw one of those. Many years ago.
My favorite aspect of the videos this man makes, is that I get to watch him experience songs for the first time, that I've heard a million times. It's like I get to hear them for the first time again!
When millions of listeners can say, “This song is about me” you’re doing something right. I always change the year to 1992 when I sing it.
1972 for me.
1967 for me...good time!!
1982 for me.
@TheRecalcitrant1 Nicely stated..you hit the nail on the head...that's the same way I feel :)
Yes it does mean something different than it did when I was a kid in the 1970's
Indeed ! Bitter sweet memories !
Very well said
@@donjohnston4215 Thank you sir! I appreciate the kind words
Everybody knows that Detroit audiences are best rock audiences in the world lol. Two live recordings one in Detroit and one in Boston.
"Ain't it funny how the night moves with autumn closing in." Think the autumn of your life.
Yeah, and Seger was like 30-31 when he wrote "Night Moves."
Funny how our life cycle matches seasons. A little kid in spring just waiting for the good times to start, summer time is your teenage years and 20s, autumn comes in your 30s-50's then winter comes and it's all downhill til death.
He did they Chevy truck commercials back in the day, "Like a Rock".
This line always makes me shed a tear of the bittersweet sadness :’-)
Autumn closing in I wish. I got winter coming at me and a lot of regret.
The summertime of life, moving from childhood to adolescence to manhood in a snap, learning as he goes... and he is getting older and feeling nostalgic because he thinks autumn is closing in, and his best days may be gone... kind of melancholy imo.
Yet it happens to us all. Life.
Nobody could sing and tell a story like Bob..what an extremely talented man..I wish I had appreciated him more when I was younger.
"Main Street" Is one of MANY other great Bob Tunes...
I was 17 when this song hit the radio. I experience it like I was there every time.
I've always loved this song but as my autumn moves in I appreciate it even more as I reminisce about mine.
My Autumn done here waiting on winter.
You probably recognize his voice from "Old time rock and roll", the song Tom Cruise danced in his underwear to in Risky Business
Great movie. I hate that Pizza Hut commercial. Only Tom Cruise can play that part.
It's crazy that the song is 42 years old. Rock that came out at that time would be considered old now.
or the Chevy Truck commercial "like A rock"
The song was written about him pursuing a relationship with an Italian girl who’s boyfriend was in the military while he was a teenager. The boyfriend returned & she Married him leaving bob with a broken heart. The song is about him as a teenager but remembering it as an adult.
i don't know if that's true , but dam it sure sounds believable.
A few weeks ago I heard this song stripped down an it brought me to tears. Dunno why it hit like it did,I've heard it hundreds of times. Autumn is definitely closing in as I get deeper into my 40's.
“Like a Rock.” At 51 years old, it hits hard...
Bob it hits me right in the gut at 52 but we had our day in the Sun!
Just turned 50 😳, I can’t believe it
Americana
It’s worth being old now to have been young then!
I'm 52 so I'm with you on that
Mainstreet. That would be a good one if no one has mentioned it yet.
oh my god one of his greatest.
I grew up on Bob Seger. Super dope, white guy soul. Detroit shapes it’s people.
Yes.
Yep
The 'song from 1962' he's referring to is Be My Baby by The Ronettes.
This is back when artists were “artful” now a pop/rock/rap singer would just go straight X rated with the lyrics without any poetry
Being a bit older now, I see and understand other aspects of the lyrics for example when he sings “with autumn closing in”. The song is a nostalgic celebration of the “summer” of life and all too soon we experience the “autumn” of our lives
Amen brother. Its all downhill after labor day.
Spot on friend...the seventies were my high school years... great artists and great music.
Today's music is god awful.
@@davidhapka5483 I graduated in 2001 and we were all listening to your music then too. 56-76 was the golden age of American music. It's been a slow decline ever since.
‘I used her, she used me but neither one cared....we were getting our share’. Perfect embodiment of those carefree teenage years!
Have you done Mainstreet? My favorite of his.
Mainstreet is lyrically and musically amazing. You'll like it. It tells a story, like all of Bob's songs.
Main Street as his best song I think God what soul!
It is amazing again he is a master storyteller.
1976 - 14 years old, listening to Bob nailing it... with the Eagles, Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac, Boz Scaggs, Rondstadt, Tom Petty, Steve Miller, James Taylor, The Doobies, Frampton, all around us on FM. Golden times...
Turn The Page is a classic song that tells a great story. And I see you are doing it now
"Was my man talking about losing his virginity?"
He most certainly was
As for Bob's voice sounding familiar and that you might have heard some of his material before, the chances of this is pretty good if you've seen a commercials for Chevy Trucks and heard the song "Like A Rock" or watched the movie "Risky Business" and saw the scene of Tom Cruise dancing around the living in his tighty-whiteys to the song "Old Time Rock'n'Roll"
For the record: you did pronounce his name correctly
for the record, I lost my cherry to this song. :D Okay okay. TMI
Working on mysteries without any clues ....
@@sirhoopalot1 strange how the night moves, with autumn closing in
His songs are on a lot of movies/tv shows/commercials
What a great reaction, I grew up listening to this music. It puts a smile on my face to see the younger generation grooving to this . Rock on brother
"with points of her own, setting way up high - way up firm and high" ... one of he top 10 rock lyrics ever
We've got tonight and Shakedown from Beverly hills cop
It’s a great lyric but not top ten lol
In the early 60's here in Farmington, MI. I was at a basement party and the band was Bob Seger and the Last Heard.
Had no idea what he would go on to be. Good Times!
Be glad you experienced the 60s! Would give anything to see all that music wonders playing, especially Hendrix
First heard this in the 1970’s - now that I’m in my late 50s I think I truly understand the lyrics toward the end of the song. God bless all - thanks for the reaction to this amazing song 🙂
Thank you for liking my aspirations and being one of my biggest fan, hope you don’t stop someday?

Since we're on a Bob Seger kick, try "Rock and Roll Never Fogets". One of my favorites, especially since I'm "a little bit older" now.
"Points of her own way up firm and high" is there any better description.
It's actually "with points all her own, set way up high."
Plus it could be a reference to those "bullet bras" back in the day. You literally could take someone's eye out with them.
@@sallyphillips9175 Whatever it was the points are beautiful!
"Beautiful Loser" and "Roll Me Away" are are my favs.
NO-N-R-G Beautiful Loser ... one of his best!
Roll me away and you’ll accompany me. Yessir!! My daughter who is 34 now told me years ago I made her hate Bob Seger because I played his music so much when she was young and made her listen to it. 😂😂
Main Street, Kathmandu and of course Turn the Page.
...and come to poppa and sunspot baby and feel like a number and we could do this all day and not even make a dent in the list.😎✌️
Sunspot Baby and Come to Poppa
One of my favorites.. "Against the Wind" is another great one.. Along with "Main Street", "Hollywood nights", "Ramblin Gamblin Man", "Fire Down Below", and others..
In my case, this song is so beautiful and personally so deeply meaningful that I wouldn’t mind if it was played on repeat while I died. This song perfectly describes my summer of ‘76, when this album was released. Man! That summer I LIVED this song!!
I am not ashamed to admit I was in my mid twenties when I realized "Points way up firm and high" was about boobs....
Nipples. Lol
Kitten Katt my husband told me in my 50s. Lol.
🤣🤣
Come on guys.... “Points” are boots popular in the 60’s.... not nipples 🤦🏻♂️
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
His song "Shakedown" was on Beverly Hills Cop 2.
Great song. A #1 hit that his buddy Glenn Frey was supposed to sing. But Glenn was having throat issues at the time.
Probably the best part of Beverly Hills Cop II.
@@qthelost Wonder if Glenn could of sang it another time like at concerts? I'm sure he had the right to. Glenn Fry was a great man and songwriter too.
@@HappyHumanist369 I'm not sure if Glenn ever sang it. A couple of producers/songwriters wrote the song for the movie. They wanted Glenn to sing it because he sang "The Heat Is On" for the first Beverly Hills Cop movie. He had throat issues so they called in Bob. Bob liked the song but rewrote parts of it. That's why Bob gets co-writing credit on the song with the two producers. After it hit #1 Glenn sent Bob a message saying he's glad the #1 hit was from another Michigan native. Bob and Glenn had been friends in Michigan before Glenn even knew any of his Eagles bandmates.
When you listen to a song for 50 years and it's meaning to you continues to evolve the entire time.
