    WHAT'S UP MY PEOPLE! Back with another video but this time I wanted to compare photos taken with some more affordable lens options. On the Canon R system, there is the 35mm f/1.8 STM, which is an entry level lens priced around $500. I'm pairing it against an older option from Sigma, the 35mm f/1.4 Art Lens, which is the main 35mm lens I use even today. The point of this video is to show you all, you don't need the most expensive gear to get the job done. Thank you all so much for watching!! REMEMBER TO LIKE, COMMENT, AND SUBSCRIBE! I appreciate you! Take care. - MD

    Got it all correct. I have Sigma Art 35mm 1.4. and I can tell it by basing on bokeh and DOF on the pictures.

    Got all three shots correct . The bokeh is the telling story. The RF 35 1.8 STM Macro doesn't resolve round OOF lights as well as the Sigma. Not that's it's bad but not that its great.

    The bokeh balls on the canon were the shape of a cats eye and the sigma bokeh balls were fairly round so it was pretty easy to figure out which lens took each image....and just figure out which out of focus background generally looked the best, it was always the sigma...its pretty clear which lens is better

  • @mikebanks4796

    Even though you were at f/1.8 for both, the bokeh looks a lot better on the Sigma @2.31. The Canon has the “cat eye” look and the Sigma is actual bokeh balls. Might just be splitting hairs here though. I see a Sigma on sale for basically the same price as the Canon, but IS (I shoot a lot of video), not having to use the adapter (I’m on an EOS R) and dealing with that Sigma dock makes me lean towards the Canon even though I like the Sigma image better.

With that said, I been battling which lens is next, do I want the 85 or 35, maybe even the 70-200. But I think if I go 35, the RF is solid enough to save the $300 difference. Great comparison.

  • @AllieOnPointe
    @AllieOnPointe 2 года назад +4

    I have the Sigma (from my mkiv) but now that I have the RP I’m debating the RF 35. I actually guessed right in all of these because something I’ve noticed in my sigma that bothers me personally I that the edges of a subject are not as sharp even when not at 1.4. (Like feet or hands are sometimes blurry) I noticed in your photos the canon kept the sharpness throughout the shot and the colors look great…not to mention it’s much smaller and lighter. So I might be getting that lens next.

    • @mariodevon_
      @mariodevon_  2 года назад

      I think the RP has a different autofocus than the R. The 5DIV has the superior sensor and autofocus motor. Do you get the same sharpness issue from the 5D or did you see this happen with the RP?

    • @AllieOnPointe

      @@AllieOnPointeWhat do you think. for RP is it better to take Sigma ART or still Canon RF? Opinions were widely divided. I own a 6II, but I haven't bought the Sigma yet. Here in Brazil, Sigma is the same price as RF. I will buy the Sigma. If this problem appears, I disable the camera's IS. Just go to the menu and disable it. Its Sigma at f1.4 has a cinematic personality. Remembering that the R5 has 45 megapixels, making these details more visible.

    Budget-friendly camera gear is nothing new. That’s actually the bulk of the market. Pros are traditionally conservative and reluctant to adopt new gear for fear of upsetting proven workflows, so they represent a relatively small segment of the market-but they are important in that they provide visibility for brands at sporting and news events. For this reason, manufacturers launch systems with a functional set of those budget options in place alongside a pricier, higher-spec set for professionals. There was, virtually from the start of the EOS system, an EF 35mm f/2.

    Great video, but shooting both at 1.8 isn't an even playing field, it's hamstringing the wider lens! I wanted to see if I'd miss the Sigma by moving to the Canon, and the most obvious question mark is would I miss the extra bokeh from the wider aperture. Significantly reduced the utility of the comparison.

      @mariodevon_  3 года назад +2

      That’s the point of the comparison. The Sigma is obviously better. It’s an older lens but it’s built with superior components. It’s very comparable to the 35mm L lens and even Sony’s 35mm G Master. The point of this video is to show early shooters that although the 35mm RF isn’t quite as good as the Sigma, it’s still packs a nice punch for what it is.

    Question - If you shoot wide open at an f1.4 aperture in bright daylight... the shutter speed hits the 1/8000 limit very easily! (clips, can't go any higher) with a Canon R6 or a Sony a7iv Electronic shutter limits also 1/8000. Do you use a ND filter to get around this issue? thanks
    With my Fujifilm X-T3 in MS + ME mode, it auto switches when needing above 1/8000 to ES mode up to 1/32,000 - thus never had this issue before!.
    On my Canon R6 if I choose iso 50 L (from 100) to help, this just blows out the highlights images look yuk!!!. I don't want to just raise the aperture to say f2.8 to stop this happening - Canon and Sony need faster Electronic shutter speeds... maybe a firmware fix?

      Great question. You’re shooting in some seriously bright sunlight. I personally have never needed anything faster than 1/8000. But yes, the ND filter is your best bet. Some cameras only stop down to 1/4000 shutter, and ND is necessary. Good thing for photos, you can shoot RAW, so you can compensate for any color shift from the ND. If you’re willing to splurge, look up the Nisi True Color ND filters. Minimal color shift. Hope this helps!

    Wait what? You shot them both at 1.8? Doesn't that defeat the point of lens comparisons? If the Sigma goes to 1.4 then show what it can do! You're dumbing down a lens for a comparison on which lens might be better. Well than show the better part! 🤦🤦🤦
    And your comparison photos are framed differently.

    Man, I love this formula of the review - instead of overly focusing on technicalties, you took 2 really good lenses, put them side by side and asked people - Can you see the difference? That's exactly what I needed. I work for Leica and am responsible for color calibration firmware, so I'd say my eyes are pretty trained, and honestly, in half the cases I couldn't tell which lenses are which. I want to go to Hong Kong for the first time in my life next year and was looking for just one lenses to take there with me. After watching this video, the Canon ones win for the trip, because the difference is negligible, only they're so much lighter!

    I absolutely love my Sigma 50 and 85 on my R6, but I have not been loving the 35 Sigma on my R6. On my Mark IV it was my favorites. I have read in lots of groups I'm in that many people have not been liking the sigma 35 on the mirrorless so I'm wondering if it's just something to do with the mm. Overall, I love the sigma lenses for my specific editing

    Let us know if the focus on the 50mm f1.8 is faster and locks-in to a perfect focus better then the 35mm f1.8. I was considering getting the 35mm but some reports say the focusing is slower and perhaps some missed shots. Is this true. Not all reviews claim this. I suspect the 50mm however is faster. The 85mm is slower to focus :(

    • @mariodevon_
      @mariodevon_  2 года назад +1

      Thank you for your comment! As an owner of both lenses, the 35mm 1.8 gets the job done but it’s slower because of the STM motor similar to the Nifty Fifty. The Sigma lens is definitely faster. No question

    I shoot on an EOS R and I do love that Canon 35mm... the 85mm RF is a great lens for Macro too, without the crazy price tag of the RF L series glass. Found your channel because I'm considering upgrading to the R6 and using the R as my second body and found your R6 one year review. I do more photo than video work though, so I'm really trying to decide if the 20.1 (like you said, the .1 is important... LOL) is going to be enough for me. MrRaduso I love it. I’ve got a couple L series EF lenses that work great with the adapter and I’ve bought the 35 and 85mm RF lenses which are solid too. I’ve been shooting full time with it professionally for about two years and I don’t really have any complaints on the photo side.

  • @Kelvinjan

    I’ve got the sigma 35 and love it. The big differentiated here was the bokeh quality and bokeh balls. The canon bokeh balls were more ellipse shaped and sigma was more round. I just bought a R6 and will adapt the sigma on. But, it’s tempting to buy the canon for video if I choose to do hybrid coverage.
