Managing expectations… one of the hardest things I find many guys struggle to do!

Geez... we run sound from stage w/a 3pc Turbosound Milan setup, a couple of older Alto 10" for monitors, and an A&H CQ-18T on a stand (recently upgraded from a Yamaha MG10XU) - so nothing like what you do running REAL FOH sound for the "middle market" events, but the experienced advice you're offering in these videos is GOLDEN - thank you again !!!

Just now watching this. Good stuff!
I’m a weekend warrior of almost 40 years. Have a nice rig and follow, without knowing why, most of your recommendations found on this video. I guess we were of the same guild. I was a musician in high school band played clarinet, contra-alto clarinet, bari sax, timpani, concert bells, and started flute. Never played a string instrument, however.
I’ve used the Presonus rack mixer for quite a long time until they stopped supporting that model. You know the one, you could tie two together to get 64 channels out of it. Can’t do the new stuff that way. Too much wrong with the firmware. So, I went with the rack X32. But, I still have Presonus CDL12P speakers. Two on each side for the time being. Sound really clean and they carry a good 100’ before my delay speakers take over. I’ve got the 728 JBL subs on 2kw amps. Good for what I do.
I’m such an organic mix guy that I don’t use the DCAs. I don’t see the need for them. Some guys overuse them. Like a bass channel into a bass dca then also the bass in the “band” dca. That just never could make sense to me as an analog guy turned digital.
Anyway, wanted to say you’ve got a great channel here and I really like your demeanor. I could really like working with you.

I watched this video three yesterday. I use the M32C with two DL16S. I do sound for a wedding/function band that has 4 to 5 lead singers, depending if the people hiring want a female singer for their function. One of the 4 male singers has an incredibly strong voice with wide dynamics but has very poor mic technique. I applied the compression advice in this video and OMG!!! what a difference. I used the 7:1 compression on his channel and 4:1 in the vocal sub group. All I can say is THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!! It's been a couple of years of trying different settings and last night, for the first time anyway, worked great! Keep up the great videos.

Yeah there's a fairly big difference between:
A touring show where you've got a show and are just running it in different venues.
A bump in, run a show, and bump out with a generic system.
The former you can automate and go to town with all the effects.
The latter is a game where you are trying to not dig yourself into holes you can't get out of - you are usually flying on the seat of your pants, so your making quick decisions and have a quick workflow. You might work multiple shows with a band but usually you don't have the same sort of bump in/out & rehearsal time as the upper end sort of shows.
The SL3 makes me want to cry - PreSonus keep shipping firmware that hard crashes the console. There plastic PA speakers I've found are decent.
Oh on a side note of compression if you are sharing the same console for FOH & Monitors you really really don't want to over compress on the channel strip because that often leads to non-professional talent inability to judge there dynamics and/or wondering off key.
    Anyway grate video.

Sir, I truly enjoy your videos. I find that we share the same mindset on so many aspects of a mix, system set up and end product goals. In one of your videos I heard you mention that one of your friends was out with the stones. Did I hear that correctly? That would not by chance be Jim Ragus would it?

Not a personal friend. It was Dave Natale I mention him from his interview with Rick Beato. We are not friends. Thanx for the support tho. 😊

Love your content, very informative, keep up the great work! So, are you compressing all vocals at the channel strip and in the sub group? Or only back up vocals in the sub group and lead vocal at the channel? Thanks

Would you consider making a video on running sound from stage for a typical 4pc "rock band" running a typical "3pc system" (2 x 12" mains, 1 x 15" sub) to get the best (not loudest, but best) sound those systems are capable of reproducing most effectively ???
