A small reminder about the slower drivers. It's not always fear, or difficulty of the road conditions, but rather, they can't see as well. Being closer to the road surface, the ice and salt are worse, and it's like driving through fog. If I'm having to drive slower, I just try to stay out of other people's way. I think you can see alot better than alot of them. Not to mention, everytime they are passed, they get a windshield full of crap, which you don't have to deal with.
Or they're smart enough to know ice can be so slick that you will slide with the best of tires and in 4 wheel drive at times. I can't tell you how many times id be ok my way winter hunting cow elk and fast drivers would blow by me and further up I'd see them crashed or slid right off the road. Happens a lot.
I actually wonder with this drivers super ego if he would even say if he wrecked or caused someone else to. He seems like he could give a rats ass. He's such a great driver and all that as a person.......ugh.
If the truck camper had moved over any more, HE would have gone off the highway! When it snows like that, lines don’t mean crap. The grooves in the snow are your lanes.

I think if you are a driver in mountains and snow and been doing it for decades than I think its called confidence in your ability.. so what you saying is because most can't drive on a flat road that all others should be like that guy. Well let me tell you I have seen guys stuck on a flat parking lot spinning tires not moving. I watched this guy for like 25 min. Finally I jist walked over asked whats wrong and his answer was he was stuck... hmmm lol lol I told him get out and I'll show you how to drive this thing. Let me tell you I rocked it twice and got it moving even his wife in passenger said my god we been here for hours.. so just because all the drivers today have a cdl doesn't mean they are all professionals.. like any other job. You have pro players then you have halm of famers. Micheal Jordan wasn't cocky he was flat out great so he can do what ever he put his mind to. I've been driving before cdl came out. If they closed the highways here every time it looked like that, we wouldn’t drive from December through May. Also amazed how many people drive through snowstorms without even turning their lights on.
I call it dodging, not driving ! My sister taught me how to drive and told me, if you pass a truck going up a hill, it's going to pass you going down the hill. So I always give room and respect to trucks. Stay alert!
Drove commercially for 33 years in all kinds of weather it really amazed me year in and year out how many drivers can't drive in a given situation either rain or snow . Have always believed that a steady speed and keeping a safe distance between you and the other driver is a good pattern to follow and have a vehicle that is ready for the road good tires good batteries wipers and plenty of windshield washer fluid and most of all a secure load. The roads are scary enough without people who are afraid of the situation but especially snow. I used to say stay away from cars with southern plates but that's where I learned to drive so that's not always true but I still did it anyway. Best advice for anyone is the four second rule which is look four seconds in front of you or the two car rule either one is a good one. Be careful out there and be safe my friend God love ya.
I drove smaller vehicles but did Drive commercially and I like that rule you have the one I used was look as far in front of you as possible sometimes the next Hill which was fought at least a mile
It's good to look as far ahead as you can but don't lose touch of what's in front also keep it simple because you have to worry about what you're doing also you're relying on the drivers in front of you to be looking ahead also .As far as driving in a snow storm if you can hit a truck stop or a rest area you be the judge. Always check weather reports and road conditions then check your pulse because you don't want to be scared. These days it's a battle field out there and people are trying to take you out.
When my wife has to take my kids to Denver for Dr. appointments, I don't worry about her driving skills, it's the other idiots that scare me for my family safety. But I know my God is their protector.

Always a big problem for new residents, but they learn to drive in this and they stay off the roads when they can in conditions like this. Good snow tires and knowing how to handle an all wheel drive or 4WD on snow becomes important. One of the reasons you see so many SUVs in Colorado, they are just generally useful for the weather.

Your years of drovong experience show every time you have to drive in heavy snow. You are always conscious of where everyone around you is in relation to your rig. Hey Mike, from southern Oklahoma its 22° with north wind freezing rain and already had 2 semis on I40 hit the black ice and flip. Be careful out there.
When I lived in Colorado, I drove to Utah six times a year to explore the most remote and scenic back-roads of southeastern and southern Utah. In the town of Green River, in about the middle of town, there was a dirt road that goes south underneath I-70. The Green River flows south, a few hundred feet east of this road. One mile or so after crossing under I-70 is a fork in the road. To right is the Green River airport. But if you take the left fork...you will see nearly a hundred miles of incredibly beautiful desert-canyon wilderness, side roads going east with over looks of the Green River and Canyonlands National Park. Be prepared for remote travel, 4WD recommended, take a map, food, water, spare tire, tools and watch the weather.

Hi, Watching this from the UK I think your videos are fantastic. Pre-covid, my wife and I have taken our vacation every year in the USA since 1986 and have driven on all but a couple of roads on your videos. As we normally take our vacation between June & Sept the weather is normally a bit better. Last time in the US was Sept 2019 when drove west on I-70 from Grand Junction, glad we went in Sept with no snow and temps in the low 80's.

Thank you for recording this. I know you were questioning whether or not to record, but you always provide so much worthwhile information for all when you are driving in extreme conditions. We all may not be truckers, but the 4-wheelers can use the information on how to be safer drivers, especially around trucks. When I was a driver, I would get so angry at all the 4-wheelers that would cut me off and then either slow way down or hit their brakes. Among the few choice words I called them, I would yell at them for being such idiots to think a 40,000 lb vehicle could stop on a dime. I am so happy that more truckers have cameras in their trucks to prove they were not tailgating or driving reckless if they rearended someone one. I know lots of drivers that were ticketed for it, yet they did nothing wrong, the 4-wheelers should have been ticketed. Stay safe out there!! You have a beautiful family waiting at home for you!!! @Lone Cuff. @24:53 "Minivans and Prius'". I thought really? 2 big trucks, pacing each other for 10 miles when neither one can hit 65 (the speed limit was 75.. On I-75 in Northern Michigan) so the dozens of 4wheelers in need of a lesson are the aholes? How about those 4 wheelers who are pacing each other on a downgrade while a 50k lb big truck is ridding their ass wanting them to speed up flashing lights and blowing it's horn. Sucks I'm sure. We all share the road, we don't own it, rather it's your profession to drive it or not, feeling invincible is very dangerous thing and b1tching about being pulled over for impeding traffic (that 10 mile pacing thing), is well earned time out on the side of the road. I give big trucks as much slack as I can but it's annoying when they can't keep the fuq over when they know darn well they can't pass in a reasonable length of time and are holding up traffic. Not just bug trucks are on a time line. Just saying.. Cheers.
I am 85 years old and I love riding shot gun with you because I’ve always wanted to be a truck driver but I never had a chance. At only 5’ tall, I was a kindergarten teacher In Pennsylvania, and retired in Utah where I drove in snow. I love to hear you explain all sorts of strategies of driving. You make my day!
Happy new Year 2022 from Germany.🎆🎍🐻 The landscape looks like a Fairy Tale, but what is under the soft snow? It was better to return at the truck stop. 32 degrees Fahrenheit is 0 degree Celcius. At this point starts the snow melting. Under bridges and windy spots is Black Ice possible. I was happy to get company's holidays between Christmas and New Year. At monday we are back on the Autobahn doing maintenance and renewing the Drainage systems and Rain and Floodwater bassins in the Ruhr Area.

No matter how fast you go, someone wants to go faster. No matter how slow you go, someone will always want to go slower. If you are on a time line, someone will try to make you late. All I can say is, slow down, live with it. And live to drive another day.

If truckers still used CB radios more like the old days things might be better far as communication to each other, could possibly avoid a lot of issues as far as knowing of road conditions and closings and avoid massive pile ups.
I agree. I'm looking to get one for my car so I'm prepared. Had one in the 70's which kept me calm and informed as young woman driving thru the blizzard in northwest CT to Westchester NY in my 1974 VW Dasher wagon. Should be mandatory equipment on semis.
@@simpinainteasyRHEC I’ve seen videos about this and they say even when installed many just do not use them. Which to me seems idiotic because it’s instant communication and being able to tell other truck drivers to slow down. But many videos I’ve seen on the topic of cb radio say that a large majority don’t talk on cb anymore. Why not? Who knows. Also there’s a lot of new not as experienced truckers on road because of demand but sometimes I’ve seen new company trucks with no cb radio. Which in my opinion cb radio with new truck drivers would be a huge benefit for them.
Frankly, I'm not sure how I stumbled on your videos since I'm not a truck driver but somehow I'm now hooked. I have learned some of the things you guys deal with and how us automobile drivers can cause headaches for truckers. Now that I know I'll be sure to be mindful of that when I drive. Cheers!
Mike... you are such a great driver. My husband and I drove for several years, driving through all the states. We have driven in this kind of weather, but, I really hated driving in Colorado in the winter months. So nice watching you drive under these treacherous road conditions and being so calm and safe while doing so. Watching from my screen is a lot more fun than actually having to drive in it. One time we got stalled going up Donners Pass and a road grader had to give us a shove. Since my husband's heart attack a couple of years ago, we decided to quit driving. I used to drive in Colorado, and, Northern New Mexico in the winter. I drove from Minnesota out and, I was always amazed about how poor the road maintainence was out there. Here in Minnesota we would never tolerate that kind of maintainece. Very rarely are the roads ever closed.
@@HighCountryRambler In Minnesota, is not about politics, we have our strong Scandanvian tradition, where we demand good government, we are willing to pay for it, and, as a result, our state ranks close to the top in just about every metric you want to apply. We have plenty of folks on the right, and, just a bit more of those on the left, like me, so, in the end, it works pretty well. The problem comes when one side tries to have it all their own way.
my first run as a rookie was from salt lake to LA and then back to Denver. It was summertime so all good, but there are a lot of inexperienced (myself included) drivers going over those Rocky Mtn passes right now as well as Donner Pass with these storms. Winter has come!! I wouldn't drive in that condition in my truck.... if I was a company driver and they dispatched me, I'd drive it. But I will not risk my own equipment in the snow.

First time watching … I LUV THIS!!!! I grew up with such a fascination of semi trucks. My mom worked at General Electric in the early to late 70’s so I remember seeing a convoy of semi trucks driving up and down route 53 as a girl. If the weather was too bad, my dad would take my mom to work, then he would go to work. I remember when my father got a CB radio … OMG THE BEST! Mom was Carrot Top, I was muskrat love.. yep Captain and Tennille… I think my dad was Basketball Jones or something like that, but to talk to the truck drivers for a kid was such a joy! Thank you for sharing your experience. It truly feels like I’m in the cab with you. This is freakin awesome!!!!

Plow truck drivers are home celebrating and bringing in the new year. And they waited until around 0900 this morning south of Montrose then later today saw 2 more go south… keep doing what you doing and have safe drive to NV..

I live in Denver and today and last night I've been on little drives in my Subaru with snow tires and I've had to navigate a sea of dingbats in front wheel drive with all season tires getting stuck and hitting curbs and each other. 🙄

I know this past storm we just had was bad we kind of came to a stand still. They closed Wolf creek Pass for awhile I think they was doing the Avalanches runs . Drive safe.
Mike, you may think this is dull but I enjoy these because it shows what drivers have to go through. You make your best plans but sometimes things go awry. Adorable family. Worth coming home to. I'm retired and I moved to Latin America because, if you research it well, you can live fine on about 60-70% of the cost of the U.S. Plus, with double residency, I have a choice for when SHTF which government to live under. I get by on SS, pensions and some website income. Feliz vente vente-dos.
I've been a CDL for 38 years. Driving in this kind of weather is ABSOLUTELY not my idea of a good time. Best thing to do get some fuel, find a safe place and take a break.

When I was younger I would Hitchike, Ride the rails, backpack and ride bus if I had the cash or sometimes to save money plus the time! The Husband actually picked me up after quick snowstorm and being Kansas the sun quickly melted it! He was going home about 2 more hours and the town he was going to was on my list of top 5 jobs that I wanted but needed to go back north for both temp and part time work to get a work history and a full time job there! Then move back down after applying and getting the job! I would usually save enough money and when worked slowed would head south after putting my things in storage did that for three years! The trucking couple later became my neighbors due to age stopping their driving! I never told them that I was a homeless so they would not worry about me! I lived therer for 13 years with over half being neighbors plenty of dining together, shopping and trips in the country so I think about that almost has much has relatives! Have a nice year!
I was driving WB on I-80 in Nebraska doing about 45 MPH and was not slipping at all. I observed a car in my lane ahead of me doing about half of my speed, I signaled left, checked everything then moved left to the left lane. The snow was POWDER, so I let off the accelerator and let my truck slow down to about 35 but continued. The car had his high beams on, which is actually a good idea during the day when its snowing. When I could not see his headlights, I counted to 15 then signaled and moved back over to the right lane. About 5 minutes later, the same car must have thought he can do better than a 78500 lb truck per my cat scale ticket. The driver pulled back into the right lane....and kept going, if the guardrails were not there, he would have been in one of those ponds where the dirt was dug from to create the Interstate Highway, the car bounced a few times from rail to rail. Since I had started gently braking when this crap show started, I saw the driver crawl out of the upside down car. I couldn't stop safely, so kept going, minutes later, I heard State dispatching a patrol unit to the incident. Never go stopped as I was NOT at fault! If you are in ANY southern BORDER state and it starts snowing, get the hell off the road,. 95% of those drivers DO NOT know hoe to drive in the snow! The other 5% are transplants from northern states or truck drivers!
From a veteran of northern tier snow and ice driving: Your speed is too high. If you start to lose control, try to correct, and go into a skid, you'll end up in the ditch. In these road conditions, the turtle wins the race. The DOT trucks should be out there. Its a major traffic artery.
Actually there is someone in a higher power is in control, you aren't. It would only take one little spot and it would be all over. Go the speed of road conditions.
Theres people who want to get to their destination faster n they go faster n make it more dangerous for others , people it is always better to go slower when conditions are bad n not speed past others , all kinds of things can happen

Always a big problem for new residents, but they learn to drive in this and they stay off the roads when they can in conditions like this. Good snow tires and knowing how to handle an all wheel drive or 4WD on snow becomes important. One of the reasons you see so many SUVs in Colorado, they are just generally useful for the weather.

Your years of drovong experience show every time you have to drive in heavy snow. You are always conscious of where everyone around you is in relation to your rig. Always enjoy watching you drive in the snow and explaining why you choose the lanes you choose. Love your compentaries. You are right. There is always one driver who wants to control the pack.

When I lived in Colorado, I drove to Utah six times a year to explore the most remote and scenic back-roads of southeastern and southern Utah. In the town of Green River, in about the middle of town, there was a dirt road that goes south underneath I-70. The Green River flows south, a few hundred feet east of this road. One mile or so after crossing under I-70 is a fork in the road. To right is the Green River airport. But if you take the left fork...you will see nearly a hundred miles of incredibly beautiful desert-canyon wilderness, side roads going east with over looks of the Green River and Canyonlands National Park. Be prepared for remote travel, 4WD recommended, take a map, food, water, spare tire, tools and watch the weather.

As an "Original Transcon RR fan", I visit artifact-sites from the 1860's...Andrew Russell's photos are great, and a resource is Barry Colmes "Westward to Promontory" from 1969. Also, the Oakland Museum of CA has digitally enhanced A.J. views...just gotta' get past their W.oke fest...LOL.The image at the Green River shows workers, along with General Jack Casement present, as they construct the bridge, who's abutments were still in use 100 years later. Hi, Watching this from the UK I think your videos are fantastic. Pre-covid, my wife and I have taken our vacation every year in the USA since 1986 and have driven on all but a couple of roads on your videos. As we normally take our vacation between June & Sept the weather is normally a bit better. Last time in the US was Sept 2019 when drove west on I-70 from Grand Junction, glad we went in Sept with no snow and temps in the low 80's.

Thank you for recording this. I know you were questioning whether or not to record, but you always provide so much worthwhile information for all when you are driving in extreme conditions. We all may not be truckers, but the 4-wheelers can use the information on how to be safer drivers, especially around trucks. When I was a driver, I would get so angry at all the 4-wheelers that would cut me off and then either slow way down or hit their brakes. Among the few choice words I called them, I would yell at them for being such idiots to think a 40,000 lb vehicle could stop on a dime. I am so happy that more truckers have cameras in their trucks to prove they were not tailgating or driving reckless if they rearended someone one. I know lots of drivers that were ticketed for it, yet they did nothing wrong, the 4-wheelers should have been ticketed. Stay safe out there!! You have a beautiful family waiting at home for you!!! @Lone Cuff. @24:53 "Minivans and Prius'". I thought really? 2 big trucks, pacing each other for 10 miles when neither one can hit 65 (the speed limit was 75.. On I-75 in Northern Michigan) so the dozens of 4wheelers in need of a lesson are the aholes? How about those 4 wheelers who are pacing each other on a downgrade while a 50k lb big truck is ridding their ass wanting them to speed up flashing lights and blowing it's horn. Sucks I'm sure. We all share the road, we don't own it, rather it's your profession to drive it or not, feeling invincible is very dangerous thing and b1tching about being pulled over for impeding traffic (that 10 mile pacing thing), is well earned time out on the side of the road. I give big trucks as much slack as I can but it's annoying when they can't keep the fuq over when they know darn well they can't pass in a reasonable length of time and are holding up traffic. Not just bug trucks are on a time line. Just saying.. Cheers.
I am 85 years old and I love riding shot gun with you because I’ve always wanted to be a truck driver but I never had a chance. At only 5’ tall, I was a kindergarten teacher In Pennsylvania, and retired in Utah where I drove in snow. I love to hear you explain all sorts of strategies of driving. You make my day!

Happy new Year 2022 from Germany.🎆🎍🐻 The landscape looks like a Fairy Tale, but what is under the soft snow? It was better to return at the truck stop. 32 degrees Fahrenheit is 0 degree Celcius. At this point starts the snow melting. Under bridges and windy spots is Black Ice possible. I was happy to get company's holidays between Christmas and New Year. At monday we are back on the Autobahn doing maintenance and renewing the Drainage systems and Rain and Floodwater bassins in the Ruhr Area.

If truckers still used CB radios more like the old days things might be better far as communication to each other, could possibly avoid a lot of issues as far as knowing of road conditions and closings and avoid massive pile ups.
I agree. I'm looking to get one for my car so I'm prepared. Had one in the 70's which kept me calm and informed as young woman driving thru the blizzard in northwest CT to Westchester NY in my 1974 VW Dasher wagon. Should be mandatory equipment on semis.
Why aren't they being used now? I probably sound ignorant, but i cant imagine why someone wouldnt want to use them.

Which to me seems idiotic because it’s instant communication and being able to tell other truck drivers to slow down. But many videos I’ve seen on the topic of cb radio say that a large majority don’t talk on cb anymore. Why not? Who knows. Also there’s a lot of new not as experienced truckers on road because of demand but sometimes I’ve seen new company trucks with no cb radio. Which in my opinion cb radio with new truck drivers would be a huge benefit for them.
Because of who some of these carriers are hiring. They hire anyone who shouldn't be on the road

Mike... you are such a great driver. My husband and I drove for several years, driving through all the states. We have driven in this kind of weather, but, I really hated driving in Colorado in the winter months. So nice watching you drive under these treacherous road conditions and being so calm and safe while doing so. Watching from my screen is a lot more fun than actually having to drive in it. One time we got stalled going up Donners Pass and a road grader had to give us a shove. Since my husband's heart attack a couple of years ago, we decided to quit driving. I used to drive in Colorado, and, Northern New Mexico in the winter. I drove from Minnesota out and, I was always amazed about how poor the road maintainence was out there. Here in Minnesota we would never tolerate that kind of maintainece. Very rarely are the roads ever closed.
Minnesota drivers are above average drivers, truckers four wheelers alike, courteous and fast.
That's how Colorado WAS, before the invasion from the left coast...
@@HighCountryRambler In Minnesota, is not about politics, we have our strong Scandanvian tradition, where we demand good government, we are willing to pay for it, and, as a result, our state ranks close to the top in just about every metric you want to apply. We have plenty of folks on the right, and, just a bit more of those on the left, like me, so, in the end, it works pretty well.
The problem comes when one side tries to have it all their own way.

my first run as a rookie was from salt lake to LA and then back to Denver. It was summertime so all good, but there are a lot of inexperienced (myself included) drivers going over those Rocky Mtn passes right now as well as Donner Pass with these storms. Winter has come!! I wouldn't drive in that condition in my truck.... if I was a company driver and they dispatched me, I'd drive it. But I will not risk my own equipment in the snow.

I grew up with such a fascination of semi trucks. My mom worked at General Electric in the early to late 70’s so I remember seeing a convoy of semi trucks driving up and down route 53 as a girl. If the weather was too bad, my dad would take my mom to work, then he would go to work. I remember when my father got a CB radio … OMG THE BEST! Mom was Carrot Top, I was muskrat love.. yep Captain and Tennille… I think my dad was Basketball Jones or something like that, but to talk to the truck drivers for a kid was such a joy! Thank you for sharing your experience. It truly feels like I’m in the cab with you. This is freakin awesome!!!!

I live in Denver and today and last night I've been on little drives in my Subaru with snow tires and I've had to navigate a sea of dingbats in front wheel drive with all season tires getting stuck and hitting curbs and each other. 🙄

I know this past storm we just had was bad we kind of came to a stand still. They closed Wolf creek Pass for awhile I think they was doing the Avalanches runs . Drive safe.
Mike, you may think this is dull but I enjoy these because it shows what drivers have to go through. You make your best plans but sometimes things go awry. Adorable family. Worth coming home to. I'm retired and I moved to Latin America because, if you research it well, you can live fine on about 60-70% of the cost of the U.S. Plus, with double residency, I have a choice for when SHTF which government to live under. I get by on SS, pensions and some website income. Feliz vente vente-dos.

I've been a CDL for 38 years. Driving in this kind of weather is ABSOLUTELY not my idea of a good time. Best thing to do get some fuel, find a safe place and take a break.
I can't even watch this guy because of his egotistical attitude and comments about other drivers. I thought this was recent and wanted to check out the weather then saw it was old. He will one day get what he's asking for. He may have already, but thats not something he would ever share anyway. Only "the best" for this guys channel. Nothing real.

Thamk's for the Video! Stay safe! You remind me of my neighbors who have since passed away a couple both truckers! When I was younger I would Hitchike, Ride the rails, backpack and ride bus if I had the cash or sometimes to save money plus the time! The Husband actually picked me up after quick snowstorm and being Kansas the sun quickly melted it! He was going home about 2 more hours and the town he was going to was on my list of top 5 jobs that I wanted but needed to go back north for both temp and part time work to get a work history and a full time job there! Then move back down after applying and getting the job! I would usually save enough money and when worked slowed would head south after putting my things in storage did that for three years! The trucking couple later became my neighbors due to age stopping their driving! I never told them that I was a homeless so they would not worry about me! I lived therer for 13 years with over half being neighbors plenty of dining together, shopping and trips in the country so I think about that almost has much has relatives! Have a nice year!
I was driving WB on I-80 in Nebraska doing about 45 MPH and was not slipping at all. I observed a car in my lane ahead of me doing about half of my speed, I signaled left, checked everything then moved left to the left lane. The snow was POWDER, so I let off the accelerator and let my truck slow down to about 35 but continued. The car had his high beams on, which is actually a good idea during the day when its snowing. When I could not see his headlights, I counted to 15 then signaled and moved back over to the right lane. About 5 minutes later, the same car must have thought he can do better than a 78500 lb truck per my cat scale ticket. The driver pulled back into the right lane....and kept going, if the guardrails were not there, he would have been in one of those ponds where the dirt was dug from to create the Interstate Highway, the car bounced a few times from rail to rail. Since I had started gently braking when this crap show started, I saw the driver crawl out of the upside down car. I couldn't stop safely, so kept going, minutes later, I heard State dispatching a patrol unit to the incident. Never go stopped as I was NOT at fault!
If you are in ANY southern BORDER state and it starts snowing, get the hell off the road,. 95% of those drivers DO NOT know hoe to drive in the snow! The other 5% are transplants from northern states or truck drivers!

From a veteran of northern tier snow and ice driving: Your speed is too high. If you start to lose control, try to correct, and go into a skid, you'll end up in the ditch. In these road conditions, the turtle wins the race. The DOT trucks should be out there. Its a major traffic artery.
Actually there is someone in a higher power is in control, you aren't. It would only take one little spot and it would be all over. Go the speed of road conditions.
Theres people who want to get to their destination faster n they go faster n make it more dangerous for others , people it is always better to go slower when conditions are bad n not speed past others , all kinds of things can happen

Wow, that’s pretty challenging driving conditions. I drove that section of I-70 back in May 2018, sitting on 75-80. That’s pretty much unrecognisable. You’re a braver man than me.
