I have oats for breakfast almost every morning, here are some of the healthier ways I like it prepared: 1. I try to stay away from sugar and sweets, but if you have to have it, try drizzling a little maple syrup over your oats. 2. Add a spoonful of cocoa powder to the oats while it's cooking, and serve with banana or other fruit, and top with a few chopped pecans or walnuts. 3. You can also top your "cocoa" oats with a little peanut butter. Who doesn't like chocolate and peanut butter! Yum! 4. After cooking your oats, stir in a little peanut or nut butter, and serve with banana or other fruit. 5. Stir in some cinnamon, vanilla, and diced apple, the apple will soften during cooking. Then top with a few chopped pecans, or walnuts. 6. In a separate pan, heat some blueberries and a little water to boiling (adding more water if needed). Then simmer the berries until they cook down and the juices start to thicken a little. Serve this as a homemade blueberry syrup over oats, pancakes, or dairy free ice cream. *Bonus tip: My father was diabetic and loved sweets and pies, so I used to make him blueberry pie. It's very easy, just wash/rinse the fresh berries and remove any stems and dump them (1-2 pints) into a pie shell and pop it in the oven. When the berries cook down, the juices will thicken, and it's naturally sweet, so no sugar is needed. Dad liked to top his with sugar-free whipped cream, but there are vegan options available. I hope you find these ideas helpful, and are inspired to try some of your own combinations.
Thanks! Just a point: doesn't make much sense to me to be afraid of putting some sugar, and instead putting nut butter which contains so much more calories than a bit of sugar.
I eat oatmeal everyday. I love it! In the morning I top it with blueberries and chopped pecans. Since one of the comments says that oatmeal also helps with sleep, I might consider having it for dinner with vegetables!
Great points! I top my oatmeal with PB2, cinnamon and banana! 10. Cheap 9. Hot or cold (eat any time of year) 8. Sweet or savory 7. Travel well 6. Overnight oats (can prepare ahead) 5. Just need hot water 4. Fullness without bloat/easy to digest 3. Different types: rolled, steel cut, groats, instant etc 2. High carb and fiber 1. Beta-glucan (feel full/satisfied)
Today I tried savory quick oats with diced celery, sautéed mushrooms nutritional yeast and a bit of soy milk (as you commented in your video) I seasoned it with salt, pepper and oregano. It was delicious and tasted similar to mushroom risotto which is my favorite. Great video and ill be eating the savory oats for sure!!!
Frozen blueberries with lots of cinnamon, a splash of almond milk. With all my oatmeals I always include some vanilla extract since it helps it enhance the sweetness of the fruit without adding sugar.
Toppers for my Bob’s Red Mill GF (no sugar added) oatmeal are one tablespoon of ground flaxseed, pinch of sea salt, 3/4 tablespoon of cinnamon, one heaping cup of frozen blueberries, organic raisins and raw walnuts. Best meal ever! Thanks for sharing. Loved this video!
I read about this idea and love it. Add 1/4 cup of red lentils to 1 cup of whole oatmeal flakes and 2 1/4 cups of water. Takes longer to cook than instant oatmeal….. but you don’t see the cooked red lentils and you get a bonus of more fibre and more protein. Win Win!
Also oats are high in tryptophane which can help having a good sleep, and with a good sleep you have a better digestion, less hunger if your goal is weight loss, better recovery is your goal is muscle gain.. and well, you spend a better day haha !
Great video! I have oats every single morning after my workout because I realized a long time ago that on the days that I eat oats I have no cravings or desire to snack between meals. I put 1/2 quick oats in a bowl and add boiling water and usually put 1tsp of ground flaxseeds, 1 tsp of hemp seeds, sprinkle a few chopped pecans, goji berries and cacao nibs. Then I top it with frozen blueberries, fresh strawberries and raspberries, 1/2 a banana for sweetness and 1/2 apple because I like it crunchy. 💥 bam, Best breakfast ever!
I love oats!! I have them every morning!! I top my oats with 1/2 chia seeds, 1/2 banana, and a tlb of crunchy peanut butter... oh and almond milk. Keeps me full and craving free all day.
I eat Gluten Free Oatmeal every day for breakfast with a banana, cinnamon and for topping I use grapes, berries and flax seeds. Now and then pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds. I love it😋😍❤
Oats are truly the best! I top mine with blueberries, grapes and a modest blob of peanut butter (except on weekends when I have an immodest sized blob). But I'd wolf it down with no toppings. In fact I've been known to munch on handfuls of raw oats. Nom.
I love having oatmeal as a breakfast, a pre workout snack, or just for cravings. I love to add plant based protein powder, fruit, cinnamon, honey the combinations are endless!!
I make my oatmeal using a fruit tea like blueberry and black currant then stir in some frozen or fresh berries with cinnamon. Top with a little yogurt and chopped nuts or seeds. Delicious and no added sugar.
Hi MsVNG, I'm not sure what the guidelines are for Mary's Minis, but a few comments after yours, I listed 6 different ways I like my oats. Maybe these will give you some ideas to help add some variety to your breakfast.
I cook my oatmeal with mashed bananas and shredded zucchini, then top with whatever kind of berries I have in the fridge. Also add in cinnamon and ground flaxseed.
Sunday nights I get a big bowl and put in two cups of oatmeal and a bag of riced cauliflower then I add a ton of cinnamon and a mixture that I have made up of flaxseed hemp seed and chia seed about six scoops. Then I dice up for apples and add four cups of water. Then it goes in the refrigerator and it lasts me all week. When I scoop out a bowl in the morning I had a tablespoon of freshly ground almond butter and a few chocolate chips then cook it in the microwave for 6 minutes then I add a ton of frozen fruit to cool it down.
I have enjoyed oats pretty much my whole life (and I am 70 years old!) I usually top it with fruit (berries, apples and cinnamon)and nuts, but I have yet to use it in a savory meal. I can't seem to get my head around it being a savory dish. Great video!
I cook my organic quick oats in water on the stove with frozen sweet corn till some of the corn cook down and some stay plump. It doesn't take long. The corn makes it creamy and sweet and add texture. When done I add slices of banana and cinnamon on top. Don't need any sweetners and sooo yummy!
I mash a banana up and use it to sweeten the oats then usually top with blueberries and cinnamon. Although lately, with peaches in season, I've been adding them, too!🍑🫐
Excellent Emmie thanks again for another brilliant explanation...yes l have it everyday with blueberries, banana, ground flaxseed and cinnamon...I would literally be lost with oats (that's what we call it in UK but same difference I believe) xx🧡😹
Thank you, Emmie, for your wonderful videos! I have oatmeal for my first meal of the day with ......!/2c. wild blueberries, 3/4c. frozen spinach, 1 apple, cinnamon, vanilla, ginger, and 1T maple syrup. Totally Yummy. I look forward to it and it keeps me happy for hours. And, thanks for reminding me about savory options. My fave savory is: soy sauce and a bit of tahini (I pour the top inch of oil off when I open the jar. This means that I have to stir the dry-ish tahini and soy sauce together before I add the cooked oatmeal to the bowl.) I also cook this oatmeal with some frozen or fresh greens. It tastes a little bit like a really good mac and cheese.
Craaavvvee oatmeal every day. I add in a ton of frozen riced cauliflower, cacao powder, frozen berry cherry blend, 1 frozen banana, almond extract and some ground flaxseed. Yummmm!!!!!
I just like my oats raw, with alittle bit of chia seeds, some grapes cut up, or tiny bit of apple juice, as I can’t stomach milk, a texture thing!! Also savory, with oat groats, spinach, tomatoes, nooch, spices…Yum!!
I top my oatmeal with mixed berries But my trick for cooking it is that I instant pot enough for four days worth. I take a portion out and put it in a pot with a frozen banana and a little bit of almond milk and put my cinnamon and a bit of Stevia and as I am cooking it. I also put a variety of extracts depending on my mood. It becomes a huge delicious bowl of creaminess.
I had oat groats for dinner because my huge main salad meal at 3 pm was ultra satisfying and I will be hitting hiking trails in an hour, no need to be digesting food while hiking.👏🏻😉
Handful of walnuts, 1/4 cup of berries, 1 tsp cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice or cardamom , 1 T ground flaxseeds, 1 T chia seeds, 1 T balsamic vinegar, mint leaves, splash of plant based milk.
ok, this lady makes me wanna be humorous.... my first thought when she was saying you can have your oatmeal anytime, i thought she was going to say you can put oatmeal in your morning coffee..lmbo. seriously where did that come from in my mind...?!!! im laughing so hard... I just found you, and love this..If Emmie cant get me to get myself back on track to lose weight i dont know who can... problem is i dont know where to start..I want ideas for breakfast , then lunch, then supper in that order...I need to lose 40 lbs.
When I first went plant based over 5 yrs ago, oatmeal was my breakfast of choice. But I was always hungry a couple of hours later! Also now I cook my husband a weeks worth of oats on Monday and just reheat daily portions the Instant Pot each morning.
It's not really what goes on top of my oatmeal but what I put in it ..a VERY small splash of almond extract, vanilla extract, cinnamon, either allulose sweetener or a drizzle of maple syrup and strawberries on top
1/2 c uncooked oats, 1 1/2 c water, banana, 1/2 c berries, 1 tbs ground flax, 1 tbs pumpkin seeds, 1 tbs nut butter. That is my fruit for the whole day. Also, I experimented and the nut butter has made this meal hold me for 4 hours now. (without nut butter I was hungry at 2.5 hours) I’m in maintenance😄
That sounds SOOO delicious Amy & congrats for reaching goal & being in maintenance! Sometimes i feel like i'll never get to where u are. (but then other days it feels like its only been a minute! wierd huh) Do u mind sharing how much u lost and did u eat that yummy oaty recipe thru out your loss period too or just in maintenance? im pretty sure Emmie said u can eat fruit when ever u like? like not just 2 pieces a day? (hmm might have been in her other oatmeal video?) i myself eat 5 or 6 pieces of fruit a day ~ or more depending what season it is! Lookout when its mango & watermelon season! lol : ) i have lost 18kgs so far and i think giving myself permission to snack on fruit between meals or after dinner (or whenever i want really) has ERASED my desire for junk sweets. Stuff like cake or bikkies or ice cream or even soft drink or lollies or chocolate! (which AMAZES me & is SUCH A RELIEF) PLEASE dont think im criticising or anything, im just curious like..really interested to get your opinion on fruit regarding your daily limit? do u sometimes desire more? cos im thinking maybe i'll lose more weight or faster, if i too limit myself to a couple pieces of fruit a day? but then again i end up craving fruit, if i restrict myself...so maybe i'd end up wanting junk sweets again if i couldnt satisfy my sweet tooth with fruit. its hard to know isnt it? do u think it made a difference to your weight loss only having 2 a day? I'll shut up now, sorry to be a pain. thanks for listening.
Hey! ❤ your channel! I too my oatmeal with chia flax seeds or hemp seeds. Cinnamon, blueberries and a tiny drop or organic lemon extract! Omg sooo delicious! I look forward to eating it every day. I have an upcoming trip and I will be bringing my oats with me! 💕
if I eat it for breakfast, I put ceylon cinnamon, blueberries, and a tiny drizzle of date syrup or maple syrup on it. I have found, however, that I prefer a smoothie breakfast. So I just put 1/2 c of regular oatmeal in my blender with water, my plant milk, frozen bananas and blueberries, spirulina powder, ground flax seed, and a handful of spinach. It's quick and easy, I enjoy drinking my breakfast and it fills me up until lunch.
I like to prepare my oatmeal (dry) mixed with cinnamon, flax meal, and a small sprinkling of dried mulberries. Then in the morning, I pour almond milk on top and eat it like that with blueberries and half a banana. Do you think that eating it raw like that is still a good way to go for weight loss?
Having grown up in America, the first time I went to a Japanese hotel breakfast buffet, I thought "Where's all the breakfast food?". It was such a culture shock to see so many vegetables, salad, soup, fish, beef, tofu, rice, noodles, yogurt and pudding served for breakfast. There was a small section of pastries and fruit at the end of the buffet but only at the very end of the line.
Another excellent video and I love 💕 Oats and I even put Oats in a homemade crumble topping when making a fruit crumble or a vegetable crumble. Love 🥰 this video Emmie and love 😍💞 you. My oatmeal is topped with either cinnamon and mixed nuts or cinnamon with mixed seeds.
I get the Quaker Oats usually in the clearance rack that are in 30gram packets and have dehydrated fruit in them, SO good. I had a blueberry 🫐 flavored packet of oats just now because of this video 😂👏🏼
Totally agree! the same for potatoes - hehe Personally after a few hours I'm already hungry again after oatmeal .. Do you have a recipe for savory oats? I really want to try it.

Can you do a Mary’s Mini oats version? It be really interesting to see how you would get variety out of oats for 10 days.
