Lots of talented guitarists in the '80s. Most of them weren't given their due respect. There were just so many of them! Stevens was one of the overlooked ones. I knew he was good, but this is beyond the level I knew about. Great pick. Great video, Fil! Amazing!
Since "Rebel Yell" people talked about Stevens as a great guitarist, but all I ever saw was the commercial playing with Billy Idol. I mostly believed he was pretty good, but holy hot damn! This is fire! Wow! Good pick as always Fil! And you're absolutely right. Definitely not bored listening to this.
After seeing a few interviews with Steve Stevens, he struck me as much more a complex dude than the 80s glam would have implied. He explained how he used to listen to various styles of guitar on the radio growing up, and how the intro on Rebel Yell was inspired. Also dig the "Over The Hills And Far Away" quotes.
I love Steve. He is the epitome of playing what the song needs. And definitely one of my favorite guys to watch being interviewed. He seems like a really cool guy. When talking about songs, he will say this sound goes well with Billys voice. That's awesome! And one of my favorites was talking about the Ray gun, he said "it's my thing, it's my schtick." I think it's funny. He's one of those I appreciate more and more. And I have watched this several times and now you analized it! Awesome! Great video!
I always knew him from Billy Idol, then from his solo work, Atomic Playboys. This is a side of him I haven't seen before. It gives me even more respect for him. Thanks for sharing this video.
Wow and holy shit! Steve Stevens is so much better than I realized from listening to Billy Idol songs on the radio. I had no idea. Thank you Fil for continuously expanding my mind.
One of the greatest guitarists of this generation, he made Billy Idol shine in the 80's with his great work, he won an an Oscar for the movie Top Gun. He is one of many favorites that I have on my list, Randy Rhodes, Jimmy Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen.... I don't want to get into it. Great clip, I will check out the rest of this performance.
One of the most versatile and hardest working guitarists in music, and a super chilled down to earth guy as well when you meet him. I honestly can't say enough good things about Steve, he's one of the greats for sure.
Quite a departure from the wild stuff he plays with Billy, great picking technique and guitar tone. You know your good when you can smoke🚬....and smoke on the guitar🤘🏻
Brilliant choice Fil, I was mesmerized by Steve's playing and you did a great job on the breakdown as always. Thank you so much! I always appreciated Steve but I had no idea he could spin something like this off. Rock!
This was fabulous, Fil! Thanks for the analysis and explanation of the set-up and the midi. For certain I never got bored with that melody soaring around! I don't remember ever hearing this sound with nylon strings!♡
Fil, good review sir. Like that you gave Steve Stevens his due. Steve is so underated, one of the few gutarist out there that can play all different styles of music. And of course we can't forget his undeniable guitar playing and contribution to Billy Idol.
Oh that silly Brooklyn boy. I love it when people say he is UNDERRATED but he's catalog is 2nd to none. "Dirty Diana" Theme of "Top Gun" wins Grammy ,45 MILLION in the bank AND I hear he is the sweetest man ever.Fil we need you in NYC! Oh look up Flamenco a go-go ! The man goes full tilt GITANO! BTW AMAZING assessment. I LOVE you went technical. I am sure musicians will appreciate IT! THANKS Fil !

Big fan of Steve's work. As a young man, he was actually trained in Flamenca guitar, but he adapted the flat pick emulation later. He always amazes me.
Another great informative analysis. very cool performance and runs by Steve Stevens. have a good ole Rockin' good time on your live streams Tues/Wednesday Fil.
I've got one of the same kind as Steve uses and it is so versatile since one can use cross-over techniques and sounds. It is a very, very recommendable guitar.
Oh my word!! I discovered SS by happy accident in 1989, my senior year of high school, and not one single person I knew had a clue who he was! I bought Atomic Playboys that year and I wore out copy after copy LOL! My top 2 favorites are Desperate Heart and Run Across Desert Sands (instrumental) and I would love to see your analysis on either one, but it would serve you well to hear the whole album!! Thank you so much for this 😍
I have to admit I was a little annoyed with the cigarette in his mouth but as I continued to watch and listen ......he is actually pretty amazing .. He did finally ditch that cigarette that that was so distracting !!! I really enjoyed this video .
And that little bit of Led Zeppelin he threw in. "Over the Hills and Far Away" I think? Anyway. The song and video of Steve's I always find myself going back to, besides all his great work with Billy Idol, of course, is the title track Atomic Playboys from his band Atomic Playboys. The original video to the song is pretty badass. Vocally, lyrically and...shredically. Just made that word up. And so much energy and adrenaline. And that song brings to mind Vince Neil's solo album and the track "You're Invited But Your Friend Can't Come," from Exposed, Vince's first solo album away from Motley Crue, which Steve also played guitar on. ☺ (The video taken from the movie Encino Man is the best version.) Great review as always Fil.
The "Rebel Yell" beginning is another bit proving he is under-rated. I've been playing for almost 40 years and the rebel yell beginning is still hit or miss
Thank you Professor Phil I like the way you explained that one little mistake that's what you hear when you go to live concert it's part of live music and the explanation of the Two Jacks and the technology used to create his sound technology doesn't make you better it can take you to places where no one's ever been before more creativity good job bro
I don't think other commenters have realized that this comment section was visited by the man himself. I'm a big fan and a student (playing over 50 years) of your work, Steve!
Fil, you might enjoy the classical playing of Roxane Elfasci. She only has a few things on RUclips but plays a beautiful guitar rendition of Clair de Lune and also Fuoco. I must also thank you very, very much for turning me on to Molly Tuttle! Keep of the great content.
Anyone who wants to hear Steve at his best should listen to the Bozzio Levin Stevens albums with Tony Levin and Terry Bozzio. The musical chemistry and creativity on those albums are insane.
Steve very much helped Billy Idol become popular with his playing. Songs like "Eyes Without A Face" were and ARE awesome. Coming from the punk band Generation X made Billy Idol popular among punk fans who listened to The Sex Pistols and The Damned and other punk bands. Steve made Billy Idol popular among "The World".
After checking out a few of your vids, I am now subscribed! Really enjoy your take on subtle techniques, etc. BTW those nylon strings sure do add a different flavor to his playing 😎
The plectrum is no more "classical" than it is "flamenco" though.... Am I being stupidly nitpicky? Forgive me. This is another great music appreciation class, as usual, Fil. I remember when, in the 80s, I first heard that "the guitar guy" playing for Billy Idol was really great, and me being very skeptical.... then just being slack jawed once I got a chance to check him out.
also wanted 2 mention that 1 "mistake" he made. steve's one of a RARE breed of players that possesses the ability to tranform those moments in2 embellishments when performed properly. the end result being the piece actually sounding BETTER than intended. dig it.
Yeah Stevie is one of my favorites. He can shred but most importantly knows how to write some of the greatest melodies. And I have to give him bonus points for weaving Led Zepp in there all while smoking.

Good choice and analysis! Steve is amazing and I'm glad to see him get his due. Listen, there is a kid named Feng E. He's 12, I believe, and was hoping you'd check him out. He jams the ukele like no one but plays guitar too. I haven't heard a bad cover from him and his own compositions are amazing! Tonight I watched this ruclips.net/video/gybFmv9p-hg/видео.html "Silent Storm" on his guitar (he composed) but there isn't an uke song on his channel that isn't good. So young and he truly feels the music he plays.
Great job. Is there a jack that makes you a better player or should I say "a" player? I would love to have the knowledge some of these guys forgot. That there would make me at least top 100. Wow👍 Honest question-do a lot of guitar players end up with carpal tunnel? That’s got to be hard on the hands/wrists...

"Better to ask a dumb question than to make a dumb mistake", as my tradesman printer brother says.
Basically, I can think of four string types used these days, two acoustic, two electric.
Both electric and acoustic have two types, a single solid cross section one, and one with a core taking the tension but with another (metal in both cases) wire wound tightly around it, mainly to add weight.
Thus we have: -
1. Single strand of thick nylon. Acoustic high end.
2. Hundreds of strands of really thin nylon, overwound with brass sometimes plated with various white metals. Acoustic low end.
3. Single strand of steel, also usually plated with something. Electric high end.
4. Single stand of steel, overwound with brass (I think) as in 2. Electric low end.
As a nod to bass players, the 4 type can be smoothed off on the exterior, and the windings are not obvious.
Oh, forgot, 3 & 4 are also used on acoustics.
