I like the conversation of figuring out how to find your needs being fulfilled in the working world.

Well, I have one thing in common with you. My first backpacking trip was in Hawn State Park as well, but back in the mid 1980's. We went to the Alpine Shop which was in Webster Groves if I remember right, bought our gear and off we went,. That trip started a life long backpacking obsession. My wife and I never did any long trips, but we inched out every bit of our vacation time to do trips all over the western US, Canada and Alaska. I retired early and did backpacking mostly in the Sierras (Summers) nd Utah (spring and fall). We also did several years of backcountry ski trips in Idaho and the 10th Mountain hut system. But I have fond memories of Hawn and other areas we backpacked in the spring and fall. I estimated one time that I have spent well over of year of my life in a test. Thanks you for reminding of those days. I am now past the age that backpacking is possible so it's nice to be reminded of those happy days.

Hawn... ok. Another site to add to my Missouri bucket list. Long drive from KC area, but no doubt worth it. I love Bell mountain area, and the Irish wilderness. Hercules Glade is nice too. I'm hoping to do a hike or 2 down in that area before it gets too cold

Good to hear from you! It's been said that after a PCT/CDT/AT there's alimony like a depression, like the day after Christmas but worse, that going back to your regular life afterward seems weird and disappointing. Maybe there's a video in there....

How excellent to get a new video!! I really hope these continue. Georgia is always calling you I think. Maybe you can do the End of Days hike again in December? Looking forward to whatever you do. Thank you!

For a lot of us we only have these weekends to explore and that helps us get through the week. I enjoy the overnight small trips as well. It’s what you make of it. For our thru hikes , we live vicariously through you and others. 😅

Thanks for the blast to your past. I used your and Hollywood’s vids as reference for my daughter who just finished NOBO at Callahans last week. At 70 I may do some pct Sections. Your vids will be helpful. Note: I started backpacking in 60’s via scouting. Gear has come a long way. I had an REI membership under 2000.😂

Miss the fall colors in Missouri. Oaks and hickory trees. PLUS, no bugs. Maybe a bit color will still be there when I come through at the end of October.

    • @lilchaphikes

Should be plenty of color the end of this month, we haven’t hit peak yet.

If you need another excursion. The Battle of St. Louis in 1780 basicly occured in the shadow of the St. Louis Arch, as you may know. On the same day across the river George Rogers Clark lead a group that defended a small cabin that was also attacked by the british. I am trying to find out if this cabin was on Cahokia Mound or Cahokia, IL. If you are not a history buff, you might not want to turn this into a hiking adventure - but I hope you can find a way to do so.

On the road again... oops, I mean on the hiking trail again. Get that stamina built up for the ridges around Simmon Knob! 🏃
