  • A shrub Rose named after the world renowned naturalist geologist and biologist Charles Darwin,
    “ Charles Darwin” is a fairly large shrub rose bred and introduced by @david_austin_roses in 2003
    Like Dame Judi Dench this shrub is ever so slightly wider than he is tall which when fully established means you have a lovely perspective of its huge custard yellow blooms ,
    Starting flowering quite late in June this rose will work hard for the rest of the year flowering all the way through into the back end of September and October
    Making David Austin‘s best for fragrance list the scent on these deeply copped large blooms which Measure around 3 1/2 inches across is really very lovely it’s clean strong and smells of green tea and fresh citrus
    In its first few seasons it’s a little on the floppy side until it has the time to produce some strong Woody growth capable of holding up these large flowers

    Interesting to hear you describe your blooming season. Here in South Carolina, USA, we've already had two flushes of blooms. It's not unusual to have blooms from April through November. Of course with the heat and humidity we battle blackspot constantly.

    I just added this rose to my garden this spring. it's still quite small and hasn't produced any blooms yet, but I'm excited to see this beauty grow.

    My rose is a peachy color when it opens and turns a parchment/cream color when it's fully open here in Texas. I actually prefer the peachy color to bright yellow. I agree about the scent, absolutely blows me away, so lovely. Similar to Golden Celebration, although I'd say Golden Celebration is a touch stronger for me. Thank you for the lovely review :).

      I could imagine it’s colour bleach is quite quickly in your warm summer days here in the UK. It stays much more of a custard yellow but does bleach out when we reach around the mid 20s

    Im so happy to hear that Charles Darwin Will established thicker cane. My husband and I purchased him at our local nursery last year because of its performance show casting a bouquet in its pot. I really enjoyed the numerous unique pastel colors he gives and cannot wait to see his performance this year. I currently have him in a large container and it growing long cane and buds are popping out from ever note like a climber and I’m wondering if I need a cage or something to have it climb or wrapped around something. Or would it be happier staying in a short tight shrub. I’m curious with what I can do with him. I would love it either way a bush or a small climber

    I really love this rose too. Curious if you have found it more happy in full sun versus partial shade? The DA site says both. I was having trouble with my Port Sunlight rose and it was remarkable how quickly it changed after following your advice. Thank you for your honest reviews, love your channel!

    • @the_gardenerben
      @the_gardenerben  Год назад

      I’m glad that you found the advice on Port sunlight. Helpful, I have my Charles Darwin planted on the east facing aspect which strangely enough gets quite a lot of sun around five hours. A day seems to suit it nicely

  • @doris2793

    I like DA roses but my Charles Darwin was a letdown... it has an amazing fragrance but its colour fades to a mirky cream and doesn't repeat flower for me... It is in its third year so we will see if that changes...

      By the sounds of things you’re living somewhere warm or is planted in full or direct sunlight does that sound about right?

  • @Sindri27

    Here in Florida where I live my Charles is rarely that color in the video or it changes over the day. In the US I think they need to update the picture and give info that if you live in the hotter areas it will change color. Many people are confused and disappointed theirs doesn't stay yellow. It definitely is a great bloomer. My second favorite after Scepter'd Isle

      I hear you I feel very strongly about this matter which is why I don’t filter or enhance any of my pictures that I use especially on Instagram they can be so misleading just by changing light levels and pigment

    I am looking for a yellow rose to plant it in the ground with purple wisterias as a brackground. So… between charles darwin and vanessa bell, which would you choose? Seems VB blooms have lower petal count, doesn’t it?
    Thanks!

    • @the_gardenerben
      @the_gardenerben  2 года назад +1

      Yes that’s correct do you want them to be in flower at the same time?

    • @wikicamara
      @wikicamara 2 года назад

      @@the_gardenerben yes, looking for the colour contrast 😬 of purple wisteria and lemony yellow. I don't know if I shall have a look to any other variety a part from Vanessa Bell and Charles Darwin...
      The spot is located in a patio with hydrangea incrediball in the sade and yellow hibiscus + cypress tree in the sunny area. The spot of the rose has some shade in the central hours of the day. I'd prefer the rose to be virtually thornless, it is a transit area; the rose (or roses, I might put two together) would be next to the stairs that head down to the pergola covered with wisteria which is around 7ft lower lever. (sorry for the long explanation and, thanks in advance for your advice!)

    • @the_gardenerben
      @the_gardenerben  2 года назад +1

      No need to apologise knowing the full situation is always much better than not knowing I would go for a Vanessa bell Charles Darwin doesn’t start flowering until much later in the year so if you want them to be in bloom at the same time Vanessa Bell starts this season very early have you watched my full review of her yet one of the first posted at the beginning of June

    I bought this rose because of its yellow color on the tag. I felt very disappointed when I saw with its first blooming that it is not yellow, it is a creamy light peachy color....and costed me a lot of money. I would not recommend to anyone that is looking for yellow roses. I regretted 100 percent buying it.

    • @the_gardenerben
      @the_gardenerben  2 года назад +2

      I’m sorry to hear that I really am, it’s an issue I feel strongly about which is why I never filter or enhance any of my photos or videos so you get a true idea of the proper colour I will just say that the blooms on several including this one do change depending on the heat if it’s was excessively warm when it opened it will be lighter than usual -the lady gardener is the same so do give it time

  • @Sami-Nasr

    Man you behave as if you were a sale agent for David Austin, I love those roses and they are the best, but don't try to find excuses for a disease susceptible rose, after growing roses for many years, any rose that is disease susceptible gets shovel pruning, you will turn people off roses doing that

    • @the_gardenerben
      @the_gardenerben  Год назад +3

      I’m sorry I’m not following. I try and talk about the things that I’m passionate and believe in there are several poor reviews here for roses that I don’t like and believed to be weak and disease prone. I have to ask other people to share their opinions of those roses, so you will get a balanced opinion.
