- Is there such a thing as a good rain jacket that can keep a tree climber dry when rubbing and scraping against branches, and brushing through the canopy?
Unlikely as it seems after many years of searching, we may have just found the answer! Could there be a holy grail of climbing arborist rain jackets?

I keep coming back to this video after a rainy day to remind myself about the Kuiu jacket. My favorite part is watching you struggle with the Arbortec and your helmet. It's much easier with all three zippers open.
Bro... the sena "hello" got me. That was gold.
That’s gonna be a regular feature from now on
Come on Dean, is it large?
Geez, I wish all reviews were this thorough and went through this much testing. Thank you sir.
Glad it was helpful! 👍
The Sena intro extro is spot on.
Thanks for sharing and wool is the best tip of the video. Comfort is the key to the misery of rain days.
The Sena audio is the perfect soundtrack to every climbing arborist out there 😆
Wool sweater for the win 👍
Awesome video. I'll just jump past the Arbortec. You saved me some money 😊
Every time you say descend on a rope, I have flashbacks of muddy water running down my arm. If the cuffs can keep the water out, it's worth the cost of that jacket.
Cold muddy water down the sleeve is the worst
Thanks Dan for that video. I’m looking for a solid jacket for ground work. But for climbing in heavy rain I highly recommend a Wahler stratos EBX overall.
I don’t like it when my jacket moves up under my belt. And climbing with these rubber rain trousers? That’s nothing for me. The overall stays perfectly in place. It fits nice and tight with a good range of movement. That one’s made for industrial climbers. So you can wear a helmet under the hood. The material seems to be a solid cordura gore tex thing. It perfectly stops Wind, keeps me warm and as a quick sweatin guy I love the good working membrane. But yes this one needs some care or a refreshing from time to time. I do it once in a season. And yes wool power under it.
Arbortec orange one we had was very good, for working in heavy rain amd anow days in Estonia only thing that kept upper body dry even when i was up in the tree no worries from getting wet and i talk like heavy raim not that lousy little rain when mist people say end of the day nothing stoped us from working and couldn’t aay any bad word about arbortec
I have hummed and hahed about getting a decent rain jacket. I think you just sold me on the Kuiu. Total side note, but I'm geordie and when I came across your channel it took me longer than it should to figure out that you were not in the UK. It was not my finest moment when that particular penny dropped.
😂 not in the UK but a proud Yorkshire man
Thanks Dan, I've tried a few over the years, using the SIP keiu atm, seems good also
Great you have found something you are happy with 👍
Ta wełniana bluza to chyba z czasów króla Artura 😉
A tak poważnie to interesujący materiał na temat kurtek przeciwdeszczowych. Pozdrawiam
My uncle from BC introduced me Kuiu after he used it for years on back country hunting trips. They're expensive but their gear is top notch. He also does SAR and has been complaining about the lack of hi vis options as well.
Kuiu is amazing, it is a real shame about the lack of bright colour options, but makes sense considering their target market
If you need hi Vis how about a road workers sleeveless vest to put over the top!?🤣🤣 Not that that's making it even more complicated or something to catch on branches 🤔
There are some expensive solid ones that we use. They re quite good to save your high quality rain clothes from damage.
Climbing Arborist has a good video on rain gear. He recommends the Kuiu Yukon.
I like the canswe. You need the next size up and it comes with awesome bib pants. Good for 3 seasons in west coast
For a tree climber they are very bulky, terrible fit, very wide open cuffs, restrict movement and so on….
Cheers for the video Dan. It's a shame arb companies can't design a jacket as well as a hunting company, then we could have it in bright colours. Unfortunately a deal breaker for me, we have to have hi-vis. Was the helly Hansen that you wore a lot waterproof before it stated to wear out?
I think for the price the Helly was the best I’ve found. It was a medium weight in their range of jackets, not the really thin type but not the super stiff and heavy type
I use a paramo fuera smock, it’s water resistant but if it’s raining heavy I’m moving enough to keep warm that being wet isn’t an issue 😂 either way super breathable and any damage is just a stitch and a wash away from comfort again.
Thanks for this Dan. One question: Where is the Kulu made?
U.S. company but the jacket is made in Vietnam
You should do a video on rain pants. It's been a major struggle for me to find nice bibs I can pull over boots and not be MC Hammer pants
Thank you sir. I am currently on the market ( and have been for two weeks now) for a rain jacket for when I am climbing that can hold up to the daily life of an Arborist being that it has started to ran much more than the last decade in colorado on the front range when previously we had been in a drought situation and is flooding us every day now.I have about purchased a few now bu
I'm curious how a thin North Face windbreaker would fair if you treated it with NeverWet. Not for tree work obviously since it would wear off, but for hiking and the like.
Thanks Dan I'll look them up and see if we can get them in the UK! I've see Rain Gear Pro being praised by August Hunikie. It's a Canadian make you might be able to sample one of those. Safe climbing 😁😁
Second one he shows?
@@neild7971 could be it looks similar but had a different name?
Is it the Yukon rain jacket? They sell in the UK but boy it's expensive £417
Yeah the red jacket is the rain gear pro / CanSWE , it is a terrible jacket and can’t imagine any tree climber liking it
Yes, it’s the Kuiu Yukon jacket
Great review but I’ll never spend that on a jacket. Definitely will be searching the hunting section though
👍
That looks like the jacket I see everyone bragging about .that post man
Have you heard from anyone of the new arbortec heavy duty rain jacket is any good? Thanks for the video
I've got this, been running it for about 4 months now and it's the same as the other arbortec jackets, holds up for a few months but will need regular cleaning and recoating if you want it to stay waterproof.
My problem is I work in Australia and I don’t want to be warm underneath I want it to breathe, it doesn’t get very cold here in winter so you just end up sweating underneath and makes the jacket redundant..
When I’m working for my own, I wear a mammut eiger xtreme gore-Tex proshell. Keeps me dry
What size is the jacket please?
Did you have a medium or large?
You look a similar stamp to me
Looks very similar to the Ridgeline jacket I wear from New Zealand.
$279 for the jacket? That is not bad considering it actually keeps you dry. I remember being forced to buy a $300 gortex uniform jacket as part of my uniform around 1999-2000 (back when $100 would fill a shopping cart with food at a supermarket) and that POS would keep you dry for about an hour until you were soaked through.
The Kuiu Yukon is more like US$500
Interesting that some people would prefer the hi-vis clown suits over earth tones that don’t attract bees and Bugz but awesome review regardless. I’d have bought the RGPro if it came in a different color due to their aggressive marketing. Appreciate an actual unbiased (hopefully) review 👍🏼👍🏼
Bright colours is just preference to be seen easily by the crew. Don’t wanna be camouflaged. Definitely unbiased review
Dang, just got around to ordering one and naturally the Yukon is discontinued 😞
Would yo suggest getting a jacket oversized or your standard fit
Both Dan and Conor wear the size of jacket the same as they wear in tshirts, hoodies etc…
Which style kuiu rain jacket is it?
Kuiu Yukon
Size please?
Im getting kuiu now. But from 6:20 all the reasons you stated are exactly what raingearpro is made for, its just not comfortable/flexible
Have the orange Arbortec, fit and function is fine but like all things Arbortec the stitching has gone. Quality control is lacking.
👎👎👎
What size is that Jacket?
Please
Maybe a large?? Lol
Hello, do you know if the jacket you have on is a large?
Thank you
I bought the raingearpro jacket because all the good reviews, pretty disappointed with it. Stiff, boxy, and the snap buttons come undone all day while working. I don’t wear it while climbing, only on the ground.
Very stiff, very boxy, restrictive. It’s hard to imagine any climber would give this jacket a glowing review. Maybe for gardeners or loggers it might be ok, but it still seems a stretch for anyone to say good
Shame the Kuiu not in UK!
just take your normal gear or canvas jacket and soak it in silicone thinned down with naphtha. or wax your canvas jacket. waxed my canvas pants and they have been holding up well.
For climbing? That sounds heavy and stiff
You ain't working hard enough if you wear wool under rain jackets to stay warm at work. 😂
Probably not
I’ve Got the orange one. It’s 💩
I won’t argue with that
I’d rather be soking wet from the rain as soking wet from your own sweat when wearing those condomjackets 😅.
Change clothes twice a day, and if that doesn’t cut it then an arborist should be at home…
The best rain jacket is none and a change of clothes in the crummy
That makes for a miserable and cold few hours before lunch
