- This Fir Tree take down was for Alligator Creek Falling Ltd in Sooke B.C. The tree had extensive decay throughout the lower stem, a large cavity in the top quarter of the canopy and a prominent lean towards a house. A large section of the standing stem will be retained as a wildlife pole for the next 10 years at least. Thereafter it may be shortened a bit more. 2 of us completed the work by early-mid afternoon. We were able to discharge the woodchip at the base of the tree to lessen the impact and deflection of falling logs throughout. The whole area was logged in the 60s I believe. But this tree was evidently left standing because it was comparatively a poor specimen of little commercial value.

Great stuff as always, thank you Reg - thanks too for including the story of the tree in the description, I like that. These trees have lived a life much longer than our own; although trees are very everyday things, as individuals they're also pretty remarkable really. I think it's good for them to have a little epitaph to mark their final day. Or maybe I'm just a sentimental old fool 😉
agreed with your last sentence
Thanks for pointing out the description. Would have missed that. 👍
@@austindenotter19ur a bit sad aren't ya mate
That was some sublime, transcendent music.
I don't think it is an understatement to recognize that you are the quietest and most low-key tree guy I have ever seen.
And I mean it respectfully.
Thank you for the vid and setting a good example for the rest of us.
Reg you are an artist of our craft. I pride myself on being by far the most adept climber in my area but you sir are far better than I am. My hats off to you my friend and I hope to someday progress to the prowess and calm you possess. Most of what I deal with is 75+ foot elms and 100+ foot monster cottonwoods. Not much softwood where I am. I am not afraid of heights I respect them and work comfortably but most my work has to be rigged out.
Well said. Respect.
Over here in england we do a lot of rigging. And nothing really above 100ft
Anytime someone makes it look this easy they’re very experienced. I enjoy seeing you using your new device. I’m excited to see it go into production.
It's always great riding with you Reg. 👍
Description adds value, thanks for taking the time to include it.
Just getting my eyes open to a new week and this is a nice start for it watching this! Nice and calm! 👍🏻🤠
Reg, your videos are always worth waiting for and for a non-tree guy totally fascinating. Keep them coming and stay safe. West Sussex 🇬🇧
Thanks Reg. Much appreciated. Chris 👍
That was at times tense - and then also relaxing. I especially enjoyed the re-direct. Those branches floated right into place.
Awesome job, the calming music is so much deeper than the headbanger stuff some people play with their videos as to get you psyched up!
Here you can relax and enjoy concentrating on your technique.
Well done.
Excellent vide Reg. The editing and music flow so wonderfully. Pretty nice rope work too.
Beautiful work as always reg . Bless stay safe my friend
Man, I truly love your work and have learned a lot in my career watching you work. Thankful that you have put out great content for the observant fellas on here. You can truly observe and see why you do the things you do in the day to day work. I remember 2015 I came up to talk the talk and I asked for a job. One day I’ll make it up to bc to just groundy for you. Maybe I can get Lawrence to come with.
You are an artist mate… absolutely awesome
Great video. 👍 🙏 love the haunting soundtrack.
Thanks for all these years sowing us your way to do the important things. I was seeing your videos since 2008, and I improve my level and skills higher than I thinked. My name is Álvaro Mejías from Gran Canaria island (Spain). Apreciated the effort doing the videos. A bigthankyu MAESTRO de MAESTROS
The cut and lower at 5:26 was just buttery smooth. Great work as always Reg and really nicely edited film. Enjoyed watching it. Thanks
Wow that backing music was making me super relaxed. Thanks for sharing more work Reg.
Great video and treework. Those new Husky electric saws are awesome.
Another great upload. Thanks for sharing 🙏
Sweet , speedy take down😉
Always nice to see snags left for the critters, well done.
You climb like no other Reg, Thanks for another great vid. Have a good evening!
Nice work Reg. Precision at its finest right there. Love it. Thank you for sharing. 🌲❤️🌲👊🪓
The speed line at 5.22 is just perfect almost zero wobble on the stem.
Love the scenery and imagery. I love the whole process as a whole. Its very calm relaxing and puts you closer to nature.
You are so cool Reg.
Wow man you got some big trees there here in the US New England Connecticut are tallest trees are the white pines 150 maybe 170 feet
Always enjoy seeing you. Great video
Reg, you are the best my friend. Keep them coming, Excellent they are
Well done I Love watching your video's Reg.... Thank you ❤
You are an artist.
The music made it very Zen, great to wake up to a Reg Coates video, thanks!
Tnx Mr.Coates, always a pleasure 😊. The device looks nice, compact and simple 😅
Nice job. Thanks for the videos.
This guy climbs, cuts, rigs, & stacks wood from the tree😂👍
Get it Reg!
STAY SAFE
Zipping the first top, it looked like it loaded so hard when the top came off. I went back and watched, the camera moves and it makes it seem like the spar moved way more than it did. Woke me up early lol
Stay safe brother, quality as always.
Great job Reg I like those battery saws good on the lungs eh mate
As always great work
simply fantastic work
Nice work. 👌Thank you for sharing, cheers. 🙂
Man wicked fast. Can't believe you did the whole tree, except the bottom stem, in 9 minutes.
I dont believe it either, but you can watch it in 9 minutes, that much is true
@@Recoates it was meant playfully. Your videos have been an instrumental part of my life for about 6 years now. Thank you.
Thank you for the post big man🤙🏻
That was a gnarly one . Nice touch with the music
I could just watch this for hrs on end . Thanks for sharing .
Good choice in music, turned it into a mystical event😊
Great video and loved the music that went with it
Enjoyed the video.
That’s a good video Redge I appreciate it and I particularly like the husky battery. Saw good day.
Thanks, I'm having a very good day. I hope yours is even better.
Life is simple Reg uploads i watch job done .
Nice work!
Nice little sneak peak of the new srt device your working on!
Well done Reg, that’s a big tree
Thanks Reg Cool mindfulness
Great to see ya well 👊
I don't think most of the Canadian and American watchers on here will realise how sarcastic the title of the video is. But it made me laugh more than it should have done. From a Southern fairy.......(Kent)
Southern fairy would actually make a good RUclips name. Even if many wouldn't get it.
Thanks, Reg!
Thank you for posting your work and another fine job. It is nice to see your methodical and efficient work for maybe one day I can reach such proficiency. I doubt I have time to achieve such a level as such skill and motion elegance in going up and working the cuts with rigging and coming down has to come from many many ascents. Can’t imagine how many trees you have climbed but your work shows in videos the care and precision for the tree and yourself and your ground crew. I can only imagine the challenges in working the north west damp or wet trees. I like d the backing music also. Very nice. The video seems to allow one to get a glimpse into how tree work can be calming and zen like when you know what you are doing as you demonstrate in your videos. Appreciate you showing and taking time to produce the west big tree work. Great content. Interested in the gear also. I think you may have discussed it in prior videos. If it is available I may have missed the news.
Dang man u make it look to easy nice video really captures how tall them trees are and how big
Nice work
Amazing work as always Reg, those trees with decay can be a bit nerving at times.
Thank you reg
Great job reg you are always inspiring to watch you have taught me a lot 🙂
Any news on the release date for your new mechanical climbing device bud
This has to be one of the best uses for electric chainsaws! So much less to worry about.
It’s crazy you have a reliable landing zone for wood on that slope! No roots or rocks! I wonder why they would leave it so tall. Great vid, yet again!
It was full of Rocks. That's why we fired the chip in that patch to bury it all and create a softer landing.
Thanks for the video reg, it's a nice change to hear calming music on tree videos these days. Will the new device have a specific carabiner attachment point to use for drt, similar to the zig zag? Or will you just need to attach back onto your bridge once the ropes over a branch? Cheers again 👍
I look forward to your videos Reg, also brings back memories of home. I used to work and climb trees on Van.Island. I believe you know Troy at VI tree? He used to be my manager back at Davey Tree days. I really like your video’s in and around Cathedral Grove. I’ve done some work there as well.
Thank you for sharing your journey’s, I enjoy watching.
John VTS
Yes John, I get on well with Troy. Haven't seen him in a while but he's doing well I believe
@@Recoates he’s doing very well, busy as usual haha. Take care out there Reg. I’ll be following along!
Man I love ambient music.
Gotta love that music. I'm surprised you walk down the final spar. I guess it's just easier than rappelling and then trying to retrieve hardware, with the chance you'd have to climb back up if it gets stuck.
4:40. The kids laughing was great. I love it when people watch, and I feel like I do better. Unfortunately, I’m almost always alone. Oh, well.
I can’t wait for the reg Coates device prototype when it’s available for sale @reg Coates
great video thanks Reg. Is that dynamic rope used for your loop sling on the end of the rigging line? Thanks
That was poetry. 🤝
They need to name a super laid back weed strain after Reg
U are the Man Reg. Great job
Thanks for sharing Reg! How are things coming along with your climbing apparatus I mean no disrespect I can't remember what you called it! Stay safe and keep the chips flying!
tel me bud !!! wich saw you got ther (model) and she handle good until wich size of cut ? thx man great work
Superb work Reg
Headcam makes trees look thinner than they really are!
""""Nice""", Love Watching!!!! I Was waiting For Something To Pop Out Of That Hole On The Way Up!!!😁🙂😎😎😎😉. Is Someone Waiting To Use A Crane To Take Out 1Or 2 Logs??? Or Is That For Bird Habitat Stuff???? Love Your Choice Of Background Music!!!!! You Have A Real Good Ear For Music Mate!!! 🙂😎😎😎🤗🤗👍👍.
Habitat tree
What were you using for the quick rigging instead of tying a running bowline?
When is stein releasing your climbing device? Thing looks badass
There's actually 2 seperate devices. This one and another that I haven't shown yet. They are very different. I think the second device is going to be first to hit the stores.
Spiking down with nonchalant ease just because you can class 👍
It's a lot less effort than spurring up. But long gaffs are important
@Reg I only have 8 min but lesss go.
🤘😎✌️
Cool
Hi Reg, Do you have the new stein Elevate spikes? They comfy?
I suppose so. I've worn Stein spurs for years so they all feel quite similar. I certainly prefer them to my old geckos, especially on the sole, but I can't say how they compare to other popular brands at the moment.
nice to see this , a lot of the youngbloods don't spike much.
been watching you for a bit, and we share similar methodologies. i dig it.
you don’t give yourself enough credit. title reads: “watch big tree removal in 9 minutes”… you actually did it in 8:22 minutes.🤣
Very random but what brand is your sweater looks mighty comfy.
Stanfield
What device are you using
Just from the screen shot, you have ten times the tools I have on my saddle, and spurs, but I’m sure yours weighs ten times less than mine!😆My fault!
Excellent work as usual. I reckon you dropped that big stem in one piece? Would have been cool to see that too!
No Jeff, it was left standing as a habit pole. Might just have to be shortened again years down the line
@@Recoates thanks Reg!
I have heard you've been working on a mechanical prusik? Is that what your using in this clip. And what's it called? I almost thought it was the bulldog bone but can see its a little different.
Yeah, theres to coming, different designs. No name yet
@@Recoates awesome bro that's good for you.
Mesin nya pake batre ya, kami menggunakan mesin dengan bensin
I'm having 2 two hundred and fifty year old oaks that are 6 feet girth at the base removed as we speak !
Hy Reg ! saw 535 i ? battery type ? chain type ?
👍
A skill. A craft. An Art. Thank you.
And was that your climbing device I spied? I'm aware you developed a couple of products with Stein (the trolley and lowering bollard?) Would be curious to know what kind of deal you got on those, though totally respect your privacy if you'd rather not share. As a carpenter I've come up with a few ideas, looked into the whole patenting and licensing thing and just got overwhelmed. I just like making stuff and they make it so hard: business and legal shenanigans. Anyhoo, thanks again. Mark
I've got about 7 or 8 products with Stein. We have contracts in place and I get paid commissions on every item sold. I am not at liberty to disclose my % per item. The patent process is very expensive and you would really need to hire a patent Lawyer to work through the process with you. Registered design is much less expensive and might be applicable depending on how simple your designs are. They tend to protect the appearance or shape more than functionality, but obviously the shape might be the very reason something works well. My experience with these matter is the further you can advance ideas through the process on your own, the more you have to bargain with. If all you have is an idea or a half baked untested prototype, it's highly unlikely any manufacturer will be at all interested. But if you have something that's been field tested for 6 months; documented, refined where needed to the best of your abilities, Intellectual property rights in place or applied for where possible, and non disclosure agreements with anyone associated, then they will likely pay attention. But before all that investment, you need to be sure your idea is saleable and will in fact sell. I would suggest you get some opinions from local, reputable tree workers if possible, for starters. Have a non disclosure agreement at hand, download them dirt cheap off the net. Thinking you have a great idea is worthless if nobody else agrees with you. So you really must do a lot of research on work place techniques and already available hardware before you start getting in deep with an idea. It's not easy, but it is doable and profitable if your on to something good. At worst you could be throwing 10s of thousands into a bottomless pit quite quickly. Best of luck
@@Recoates Thank you so much for such an in depth and helpful reply. Has definitely given me food for thought. I'd come to that conclusion regarding patents but was still stopped in my tracks reading, a design shouldn't be made or exist until a patent is filed for. I didn't know (or had forgotten) about "Registered design" and hadn't considered "Intellectual property rights". The couple of ideas I have are for the carpentry/building world but all you say is totally applicable: research and development. I know of NDA's and I guess it's question of taking myself and my ideas seriously (while bearing in mind the potential money pit). Massively appreciate you taking the time to write all that. Time to kick myself up the arse. 😁Wishing you all the best, Mark
P.S. 7 or 8 designs..? Already had enough respect for you. Guess I'll have make room for more. 😁
@@Recoates WEll said REG, very well said.
Would love to see a raw video of the tree removal in black and white one day
reg, never a disappointment....
What is that new srt device you are use on ?
It's one I made
@@Recoates ...!?! Great Inventor in action again 😀 I will look forward some more information about it. Stay safe Reg.
