- Growing up as a fan of The Rolling Stones, KISS and David Bowie, Gilby Clarke fell in love with guitar at an early age while living in Cleveland, Ohio. While working at a gas station one summer afternoon, he discovered his very first Gibson that would end up becoming his go to guitar throughout his entire career.

Gilby learned all GN'R songs in like two weeks. Miss him in the band, very good combo with Slash and great stage presence. Seems like a nice dude
Great story. Gilby always seems like a really good dude.
i meet Gilby yesterday and i can confirm is a really good dude
axl: "the man with a new corvette" 😅

Trogly my main man good to see you!
Nice to see you here Austin!
Wheres miss piggy?
Now you can see how much power gibson has over the 'new' media.
Alot of youtuber made a video about gibson removing there videos, great advertising.
Gilby Clarke is an underrated guitarist and above all an underrated songwriter. His playing style maintains the classic spirit of 70's Hard Rock in his composition. He and Izzy Stradlin are definitely very underrated.
Gilby looks like he does not get old at all! I would say he still looks like in '92 when he was playing with GNR.
Ahhhhh, loved watching him in the Use Your Illusions concert recordings
And that other Les Paul, the one that was burned, he played a lot as well on "Live in Tokyo"
@@gfgranja Or is this that guitar refinished maybe? I loved that LP to man, used it at Wembley.
Rob Tyler Black It is not the same. He played both on “live in tokyo” .
@@robtylerblack2617 Search on google images "Gilby Clarke burned Les Paul"
@@gfgranja Have done bud, hope Gilby see's this message.
I recently bought my first Gibson. An SG Standard, enjoying it very much.
70's Gibsons are underrated.
Yes, they are, BUT, I did sell my '79 SG so I could buy a 2017 SG Standard...and the 2017 blows the '79 away, its not even close...
What a great story. I always love this kind of stories about special guitars
Glad your back Gibson
Glad your back Gibson.
I know you're busy with your daughter's music and choppers, but Gilby please record more albums !!!!
His Pawnshop Guitars album is still one-of my favorites, play it all the time!
So fortunate to see Gilby live shows in México Rock City:GNR,Trio project(Adika, Singer) & Kings of Chaos.🤘🎸
I bought a black Les Paul because of this guy!
Same here ahah
Should've bought a music man.
I remember that guitar well. Glad to see you and it are still playing together!
I'm getting one just like that from the factory its shipping on the 27th can't wait for my bucket list guitar😜
Pawnshop guitars and swag are such a GREAT albums. This guy is a really good guitar player and artist.
I LOVE Pawnshop Guitars. Going to dig it out now. 🙌
Great video! Gilby's Pawn Shop Guitars is still one of my favorite albums.
Its in beautiful condition you really took care of it good job and this video was awesome thanks guys
Great story. Very cool. Reminds me of that movie " The Red Violin". Thanks for sharing Gilby!
Welcome back Gibson! Another great upload with a story. My guitar picked me too.
Glad you're back
Gilby's story is hella romantic. It has that mythic rock and roll feel to it.
Slash: "can you play GC&D"? Gilby "yeah man" cool your in.
LMAO !
i'd play G,C&D for that type of pay check. any day
What’s GC&D?
@@omithehomi8568 chords 🤦♂️
@@dannye3325 oh shut sorry I thought it was an acronym for a song, lol those are mostly what you need to play rhythms for sweet child o mine
Wow amazing
Thank God this channel is back. Gibson addict here 😁
Same as mine except mine’s a Custom. Love it....and I’m quite happy with the original pick ups and set up so don’t want to change it!
I madly love and respect you Gilby.
Kick a*** Awaiting your next album. It's been a f*** while
Great first Gibson story❕
There is a certain reverence that comes with saying”My Les Paul”. No wonder Jimmy Page, Peter Green, Bloomfield, Jeff Beck, Gary Moore, Phil Keaggy, Neal Schon, John McLaghlin, Neil Young, Al DiMeola, Zappa, Freddie King, Robert Fripp and Santana played them.
I still have my first Gibson that I got in 1980 it's a Firebrand the Paul still love it to this day
I had '79 'The SG' and just sold it to buy a '17 SG Standard. I did not think I would ever sell 'ANGUS' (Walnut body/Ebony Fret-Board)......a Real MONSTER ! That is till I picked up the 2017 SG Standard. I was surprised, the 2017 Standard is an all round better guitar.
Great guitarrist, a true inspiration for me.
wow video gibson come back❤❤❤
Man! A great guitar with a great story, and one that has been played as these guitars should. I do have to say, I'd have loved to hear that thing with the original P90's 🙂😉👌🙂👍
I remember the first time I picked up a Les Paul, back in the early 80s when I was just starting to learn guitar. It belonged to a friend's dad and up until that point, I had only held junkie guitars. It was this amazing combination of elegance and power that just stuck with me. Anyway, I'm really enjoying these videos here... just wish Gibson would mix more guitar playing into it :)
@Edward Oliver Hey Edward! Yes, I'm trying to put out one video per week, mostly tutorials of well known solos, but finding time can be challenging. :)
What an awesome video 🤘🏻🕶🤘🏻
Wow that’s awesome he still has it. Love Les Pauls🔥🙌
So cool! I still have my first LP copy and my first real LP. It was many years before I could afford to get a real Gibson. I think it’s true how guitars find you!!!
Great Stuff Gilby!!!!
Great story
Gilby never seems to age!!!
Mr. Clarke maybe the guy knew your situation and knew you loved playing guitar, & wanted to spread some love.
Love that worn in look on a Les Paul!
My first guitar was a 1975 or 76 standard Les Paul tobacco burst. My parents got it for me for 400 bucks when i first started playing in 1980. Thanks mom and dad. The guy was also selling a white custom les paul for 500 bucks but he didnt really want to sell it. I really wanted that white one, as it sounded better. Snotty kid i was. Now I'm an old asshole but i can play a mean guitar...
I totally had the same experience with the Gibson's neck but not on my first Les Paul, unfortunately. My first LP is a Les Paul Classic 1960. It has a slim neck. I didn't realize that it was too much of a problem until I purchased a couple of 2014 Gibsons, and LPJ and SGJ. The necks on both are PERFECT .... more of a 50s profile I guess?
You gotta love this guy, checking that it wasn’t stolen. Fair play.
Love the 3ps maple necks of the 70's Les Paul...
Bring that back...
Cool story!!! You rock!!
Thats whats up rock on
My first Gibson was pretty special. I was 16 in 1986. It was a 1955 Southern Jumbo. Cost $1100 NZD saved up from my paper run money and then my apprentice wages. Had quite a few since. Current one is a 1997 Les Paul Studio. It was intended to be a stepping stone to replacing ones I had sold. But I ended up sticking with the Studio because it has such a good tone. I always like to have a Strat around too, because they have a sound a Gibson does not do. They hardly get played, so i always end up selling them for the next gear purchase. Next one will be a Squire so I do not get tempted to sell it due to infrequent use. One that somebody has maintained frets on and modded etc.
I like SGs too and want to check out the new original series ones. Will have to wait. Just woke up and my active studio monitors are crapped out. Transformers I think. No juice. Listening thru AKG phones and only the right side is working. Annoying because my amp does not have a cab. I do the load box to DAW thing. Is going to take some time because I am laid up getting treatment for busted up spine and I am not going to be able to go back to my old job they say. The SG will have to wait. Next year maybe. Pissed off, but that's life. If it was easy we would live forever.
What a great story
Another great first gibson vid
What a cool and down to earth guy 👍🏻
I like him..... some Rooooolling Stones for you 😆
Gilby is still the man.
I'd like to hear a similar story from Izzy as well.
Great story! Wish I still had my first Les Paul but I lost in a trade forever ago. 😒 My new 50’s Standard makes me feel much better about losing that guitar. 😁
In a late 70s deluxe there were no single coils. Maybe he means the mini humbuckers.
Could it have been a pro deluxe with p90's ?
@@graemero5532 you are actually right, i forgot about that! and ebony was a standard color for the model, too.
@@graemero5532 Good idea, but the Pro Deluxe had an ebony fingerboard (along with P-90's). Gilby's has a standard rosewood. He probably didn't think he'd like the mini hums. Lots of players did that back then. I owned a Pro Deluxe for a long time. Great guitars, though heavy, and the P-90's howled playing live.
I had a '77 Deluxe with the mini-humbuckers. They screamed! Too hot actually, bad for feedback. The tone was still pure Les Paul though. Anyone who took them out like this only did it for the look.
When's the book coming out, would be some classic gunners stories.
That Les Paul is the 100% twin of my 1979 Standard. The front of it anyways. Mine doesn't have quite that much wear on it.
he seems like a nice guy - pawnshop guitars is my favourite gnr solo album - not that that is a great honour !
They are baaaack
Saya suka Gibson Les Paul...namum belum memilikinya...semoga suatu saat bisa...👍🏼
i have owned about 20 gibsons my first one was a 1983 SG black it sat in the store months nobody bought it they were asking $999 i was 15 i saved up for it i got for $550 plus i traded in a guytone foot pedal it was the most costly thing i ever bought at that age and i still have the guitar and my bill of sale when i pass away i want in my coffin with me to play in the afterlife
Go gilby!!!!!
I have two a 2017 and a 2018 standard and standard HP awesome guitars😜
Good Man, the 2017 Standards marked GIBSON's return to form after the MIN E Tune and G-Farce disasters....You said it right, AWESOME GUITARS !
Gilby is my guitar hero and will always continue to learn from him ... A true guitar legend!
After 20 Years of playing a customized Epiphone Les Paul, I got my first Gibson Les Paul (Special), and it was pure magic, so just a few weeks later I got my second Gibson Les Paul (Tribute).
What can I say? I am saving all the Money I can to get another Gibson Les Paul (Standard). I guess I am addicted.
Still have my first Gibson. A 94 black LP studio with gold hardware won on an eBay auction in 2005. I will never sell it.
Love ya Gilby, great Story.....but what were those tuners? Did you
change those out, looks like you took off the Pickguard as well.
BEAUTIFUL Guitar.....Thanks Gilby
🎸💚
What Duncan Pickups are in that guitar? They sound great!!!
Cool guitar
17-yr old hesher guitar player working in a gas station has a friend in the police department and is so virtuous that HE initiates the background check which could cost him everything.
Sounds plausible.
Ha ha, much love, Mr. Clark.. I think Johanna's Chopper is the best song written in all of the 90s.
"It's still my first Gibson." How many first Gibsons can you have?
If only prices for Les Pauls were more affordable. Personally, I'd want a '58 Burst, '68 Custom Ebony, and hopefully a one off of my own someday. 🙏🤞
I kno, The '68's are the $#!T, but $6200 ! Imma goin for the 2019 Les Paul CUSTOM BB....just under $4K out the door !
I wish he wasnt turned down in every concert.
But he seemed like a guy everyone could get on with at a time when nobody was getting on.
🤘🤘🤘
Im definitely considering the honda fireblade
Dont forget come to Santa Cruz Bolivia to Play with your band in Hard Rock Cafe, this company search artist as you.
Gilby looks like 25 years ago!
Nice 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Why would someone want one with so much negativity attached to them in all reviews, But the single cut/les paul design is my favourite.
What Seymour Duncan pickups are on this 79?
Nice
But you didn’t say which Seymour Duncan’s are in it ?
Or a sound demo?
I’m backing up the mustang as this city has no heart
Well broken in, no doubt
Gilbys cool!
The Gibson channel is back. I knew everyone was overreacting...
@@rikkousa obviously, they are taking the classic ostrich approach and keeping their head in the sand. that is figurative of course. in reality they put tape over their mouth.
He said he removed the single coils, what Gibson Les Paul has single coils?
Yo tengo una guitarra que amo y la defiendo a muerte como gilby a esa les pauls
Which seymour duncans?
Nice guitar good deal lucky
Did Gibson ever make a Gilby Clark signature model? If not, they SHOULD! They make'em for these newer unknown hacks
He is a god !!!
My first Gibson is a Les Paul Studio 1983. It was awful. The neck had tar on it over the huge scratches in paint and it was brand new. I still have her though.
I believe his Deluxe originally had mini humbuckers not “single coil pickups”
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I love you
