Testing the Luna and Magura brake rotors against the stock rotor. I know I need to bleed the brakes and adjust the caliper more to install the luna, please excuse that mistake. Here is where you can get these rotors:
    Stock - lunacycle.com/...
MAGURA MDR Floating Front Rotor - lunacycle.com/...
Luna Floating Brake Rotor - lunacycle.com/...

floating rotors are designed so that the braking surface (the ring) can expand independently of the "carrier" for less warping at extreme temperatures, like during long steep descents. they DON"T dissipate heat better, for that you'll want icetech and similar finned rotors

Ice tec shimano rotors de laminate after time the aluminium center oxidises under the thin stainless surface. Salty road conditions speed the process up even more. Speaking from experience ther to delicate. 👍

I think u could try re-adjusting the pistons, they were set to the stock rotor thickness. It’s not just the caliper and pads that need to be aligned but the pistons within the calipers.

some of these rotors require an upgrade in caliper also its usually best to use a rotor with the same brand caliper just for best compatibility you would get away with most of the standard rotors but those 2 are special and are not compatible with everything

One thing Sur Ronster doesn't do (probably because he is switching things around) is putting Blue Loctite in the holes before you put the screws in and make sure you rotate the caliper against the rotation direction before you tighten.

Great vid and sic bike. Not to sound negative, but I feel like where you will see the performance of a floating rotor over stock is prolonged heavy braking. Say a steep hill, with an unexpected hard stop at the end. I just upgraded my rotor to the Magura MDR-C non floating in my ebike, but it's a lot lighter than the sur ron. Una Mas thing I like to mention, is bedding in the brakes is super important for performance.

One thing about the upgraded Luna rotors is if you go with the upgraded shimano pads, it is a real bitch to get them installed, very very little space on either side of their thicker rotors. I had to take the brake caliper apart and barely squeezed everything back together. Cheers.

Yeah someone deletes any posts that shows any issues with their products or anything on that facebook page. And people get kicked for weird stuff too. But its such a good resource. Someone deleted a few of my posts when i initially got my bike and had issues with my front caliper being broken on delivery.. im still running no front brake 1000 miles later. If you ride technical terrain I think the floating rotors would be good as you use brakes alot more with less airflow, etc so they need more capacity(thicker rotors can carry more heat load dueto higher mass). For casual riding you conclusion is correct. Also in theory floating rotors should have less drag but obviously you were having issues with that so something was off. I didnt realize Luna was calling theirs floating until the thread of the broken one and I cant believe they would design a rotor that way. One piece of metal should not float lol bad for concentrated stresses and fatigue

The thicker Magura rotor was very useful for me in the hot desert sun, but I have it on my mtb and gravel bike. I got mine in the $40 cause it was the storm control 2 rotors, which are 2mm thick but not floating. Much better than the stock sram rotors on my bike.

I don’t see why you’d have to bleed them?? Just take the pads off, push pistons all the way in, put em back on, and re align the caliber. Don’t let those “mechanics” talk you into expensive service work, it’s all just nuts and bolts. If you can watch a RUclips video, follow the instructions and somewhat mechanically inclined- you can do it all 👌🏻👌🏻

@@SurRonster I might be using the wrong term but it's like breaking it in by slowly working the new rotors in, otherwise you can mess up the rotor/pads. So how I was told to do it is just to get going and hold the break lever down and lightly apply pressure a couple dozen times for like 100ish feet and slowly working up the amount of pressure you apply to the brakes. It's like a metal on metal contact thing that needs to be done to keep both rotor and pads in good shape. I know I've seen a couple videos where they talked about it but I forget who it was, buddy who helped me bleed my breaks was telling me about it otherwise I'd have no idea lol
