      @@PhenomSage I think it’s really hard for any anime to top Sora Yori in this decade (specifically these recent years). I mean, the last anime that clicks with me that is a 10/10 is Hunter x Hunter 2011. And among all animes I watched i only have 5 animes that i give 10/10 including these 2 animes

    I lost my mother. It was so fast, in just three days she was gone. I couldn't accept it. Looking around me, I saw my sisters and nieces crying, I knew I must be strong, or at least that was what I had learned from my father's death, ten years ago. I didn't cry, not even a tear ... I was so wrong.
    I kept my pain and sadness deep inside me and tried to move on. Some years went by and unfortunately, it started to poison me slowly, more problems came and a voracious loneliness took over my life ... I was in a dark place, for a very long time.
    When I started watching "A Place Further than the Universe", I knew from the beginning that it was going to hit me close to home, but I thought "I'm an adult, can I handle it" right?
    It was then that Shirase was confronted by reality, the unread messages accumulating, making clear the time she lost in denial, the confirmation that her mother had indeed died. Something so familiar to me, I was shaken.
    Then, alone, she started to cry and scream, calling for her mother ...
    In that moment, she was my voice, and I finally found my tears.

    Shirase shouting in front of that laptop may be the most moving moment I'll ever experience in my life. I know when my mother dies, the pain will be overwhelming, but it won't be MOVING. It's something I've come to terms with (she's not dying or even sick, OK? But she will die one day) and it's part of life. But to see this kid going through that pain to come to terms with her mother dying when she was so young (I'm 54) is incredibly MOVING. It's one of those moments that elevate an anime to the heights of the greatest works of art humanity has produced. And to anyone who says it's not real so I'm just a manchild, I freely admit that my mental age may be something around 15, has always been and will certainly always be. However, I firmly believe that if you can't be moved by a great piece of fiction, you will certainly not care for the problems of real people either, unless they affect you personally, and that doesn't count. I for one nearly cried when I saw some miners being rescued in Chile, and that was not fictional, it was a demo video for the company that provided the equipment that helped rescue them. The point is that whether in real life or in fiction (which is in a way part of real life), we can and should be moved by deep human dramas, so we can keep our own humanity.

    • @PhenomSage
      @PhenomSage  6 лет назад +6

      I completely agree, I think someone's ability to empathize will generally lead to enhanced enjoyments of all fiction, and generally a happier life in general. It feels really empty not being able to care about something.

      This is the same reaction that I had when my grandfather died, and me being far away from him physically. On the day he was buried, I asked a close friend to come with me by the river north of our town. Upon settling down by the riverbank, I played the song that we his grandchildren chose as a sign of gratitude for him (Dan Fogelberg's "Leader of the Band"), and when the line "Papa, I don't think I said 'I love you' near enough" (of course, the 'papa' here played in my head as 'Grandpa") the words hit me so hard like in Shirase's scene that I just broke down and wept. My friend there lent her shoulder for me to cry on. It was own Shirase moment, a final "see you soon" to him despite the physical distance half a world away. And this scene just cause a flashback that I had to watch just the scene thrice and listening to the insert song by itself before I was able to to move on and finish the series.

    What I really love is, the show really feels realistic, the drama is not too fussy, the friendship is not too clingy, and like mari the character have their own personality and role, I mean other than shirase the other character doesn't have much strong cause for the journey but they're all doesn't look like mere side character, and the anime amazingly work on drama and comedy without overdoing it. And the ending is satisfactory enough which I don't think any continuation is necessary.

      Necessary no. Desired yes. Specifically I wish for a 3 or 4 episode OVA about Megumi's adventure. But after that I do not want anything more to ruin this special anime. At that I'm even scared that a Megumi OVA might ruin the original but I think if done right a Kurumi OVA could add a lot to the original.

    This is definitely my favourite show this season. I think it could be a little deceiving for some viewers before they start the show (like seeing the key art and character introduction and such), like, "meh, the main characters are all schoolgirls, so probably one of THOSE shows, I'll pass". But nooo, this show has one of the best character writings in the season. I expected a lot about the show pre season, but it gave me more than that.

    Shirase's mother's body was never found and likely buried under tons of ice and snow nor was there a funeral held for her in Japan. Shirase still had a small sliver of hope before the actual journey(with no remains found, there was no official announcement of her mom's death) from the volume of emails she sent. Shirase never had a period of mourning and strengthened her resolve to go to Anarctica to get answers and closure for her heavy emotional stress. I could imagine a sequel with the girls reuniting as adults on another adventure paralleling Shirase's friends leading the Anarctica voyage in this anime's tv run after Shirase's mother's disappearance.

    jeez, man. I really liked that you did more of an essay than a review, because it does sum up what made this series so great. When I started this, I never thought it would have such an impact on me. Episode 12 was brutal, in the sense that it was brutaly realistic. That last scene was a punch from reality to Shirase's soul... and mine as well. Im glad they ended Shirase's arc with such sensibility for her character, and it really demostrates that the writers really love and respect this characters. Im sad this journey is over, but Im glad I got to see it and experience it with this goofy and lovable girls. This is an anime to remember, and I'll be watching it again some day... Though not soon. My soul still needs to recover from that punch. Because yes... I wept too.

    Actually, this story has more and more deep meanings than you know.
    “Shirase” is a family name of famous first Japanese explorer for South Pole; Mr. Nobu Shirase. Japanese knows it has meaning that her mother gave this name to her.
    And this family name “Shirase (白瀬)” is meaning as “White ford”, but other Japanese word “Shirase (報せ)” has meanings as “News”, “Information”, or “Notification”.
    Her name is “Shirase (報瀬)“ that has “Information” and “ford”. So, she could recognize her mother’s actual dead at Antarctica from several informations.
    And her birthday November 1st “1101” has other meaning in Japan. At 1990s, it is popular to use pager services as “Pocket Bell System” in Japan. At that time, Japanese has common meanings to special numbers with near reading pronunciations toward other Japanese words. “1101” has meaning “I want to meet”. And last number of unread count on her mother’s laptop is “1101”.
    Japanese stories have deeply volt lines and several Japanese can feel these tricks and magics…
    This is Japanese Animations.

    I once called this show a 'K-on but done right' two episodes in. I've never been more wrong. This is much more than that. Truly, this proves a show about watching grass grow can touch hearts, win awards and change lives as long as the characters are well done. Plot be damned.

    Many anime have made me tear up , some even managed to make me cry , but no anime made me Blubber like the scene of shirashe seeing her mother's laptop..... the rush of emotions of both coming to terms with the fact that the journey was over and the fact that shirashe had come to the cold hard realization of seeing her work of countless years in front of her very own eyes was to much for me, i dont think any media ever made me fell like this but im glad i watched this scene alone in the house because anyone would have heard the lound hard sobbing that just could not be contained

    This is the greatest anime ever. Everything it's achieved, in terms of writing, direction, characters, music and literally everything else, deserves to be praised as much as it has. I've seen a lot of anime, but no anime has taken this much care in developing it's characters in believable and relatable ways. Everyone needs to watch it.

    Amazing series! This anime took me by surprise, as I thought it would be the typical "cute girls doing cool things", but I was wrong ... the plot, how real the characters feel when they interact with each other, the development of everyone and their personalities , the story(although simple)is very well told, that light comedy, the suspense, the animation, etc..
    Just one doubt: you favorite girl of this series?

    I am a genius. I thought of a soon comic series that is so much like this (despite they'll be some epic moments), only it take place in Norse and Celtic mythology.
    Seeing lives of young school girls that were changed forever by a young man and how his tragic life affected them all. Now all they want to do is protect and love him as much as he wants to protect and love them all; teaching them how to be grateful, showing them how to not take life for granted, and even giving hope to those who want to end their lives.
    I know you guys will enjoy it, all I hope is my soon comic would do well for the Norse and Celtic Nations

    huh...i didn't know you wrote video essays. After making such a wonderful video nailing what goes into good character writing, can you understand a bit better why I find the quality of such writing in a show like darling in the franxx to be average to mediocre? I mean come on; you paint a pretty damn good picture here that illustrates the disparity in the basic tenets of great character writing that is missing with the darling in the franxx cast.

    • @PhenomSage
      @PhenomSage  6 лет назад +2

      Believe me dude I completely understand your perspective, it's part of the reason why responding to your criticisms was difficult because a lot of them hold merit for me too. I definitely don't think Darling's character writing is anything special, my enjoyment on that front is pretty superficial, I'm mostly enjoying the show for how fun it is to speculate on each week in terms of world building and where they'll take the narrative.

    • @MrMoises621
      @MrMoises621 6 лет назад +1

      Hey don't get me wrong, i think its fine to love the cast of a show like darling in the franxx; I'm just glad that you can see where I'm coming from, especially when you're capable of making a such a well-articulated argument like this for what entails good character writing. Here's looking forward to more videos from your channel. You strike the perfect balance between casual and niche tastes in anime while having the intellect to talk expansively about shows. I was sleeping on your channel at first because i thought you were a typical weekly review channel until 1. I realized that even though you're not completely reviewing an episode (their more of discussions), you actually have relevant things to say about them; cohesive impressions that effectively describe what you believe to be the strengths of the show and how it engages you to continue watching, 2. you respond appropriately and maturely to your audience and 3. You're more than capable of writing essay pieces to explicate further on the appeal or lack thereof, of an anime you're watching. I'm very interested to see growth of your content and your channel

    • @PhenomSage
      @PhenomSage  6 лет назад +1

      Can't tell you how much this means to me, especially coming from you since I know how articulate you are yourself, so thank you man, I'm glad you mentioned wanting to see my content grow as well as my channel because that's exactly what I'm trying to do with these video essays, I can count the number of them I've made on one hand so I want to make more and get better at them since it's content I'm really proud of. Thanks again bro!

      Darling in the Franxx is not Sora Yora level but I think it is better than most. And Darling in the Franxx is SCI-FI and a mystery along with action three things that most often dampen character writing. I think this weakness is part of the reason lots of College Literature types dismiss, SCI FI, Fantasy, and mysteries from serious works of art.

    • @MrMoises621
      @MrMoises621 6 лет назад

      @RedRocket4000 "And Darling in the Franxx is SCI-FI and a mystery along with action three things that most often dampen character writing."
      Hmmmm...I actually don't really agree with that. While stories such as sci-fi and mysteries thrive on their high concept narratives or the complexities of its mystery respectively, it's how those elements of the genre's explore character motivations and actions that make really great mystery and sci-fi. Some of the best sci-fi and mysteries are remembered for how their concepts impacted the characters of those stories. College literature types don't dismiss sci-fi, fantasy, or mysteries from serious works of art for those reasons. Besides, Darling in the Franxx may be a sci-fi mecha series, but it is being told through the lens of a character piece and that's probably why i don't vibe with the series all that much. I don't think it does its character writing well enough to warrant presenting itself as an explorative piece on stunted human adolescent and sexual growth. Still, there's time for the show to impress me. Darling in the franxx is not bad, but all the pieces aren't quite falling in place for a truly compelling show. It has a certain speculative draw that makes it enjoyable to watch and the characters are ok for the most part (not really a fan of how they're writing futoshi), but past that I don't find myself engaging with it the way i'd hoped
