I use both Amazon and kobo and I use calibre to remove DRMs and convert formats so that I can both back up my purchases and put them in whichever device I choose to
This is wonderful news to people in Canada, as we have access to most of our libraries using the Kobo and integrated Overdrive app. The fact that the Kobo Libra is now in colour, the note-taking capabilities, as well as the reasonable pricing - I for one will be ordering this!
I preordered the Clara Colour before doing my research - I didn't realise that Kaleido 3 screens require the frontlight to be brighter to match the contrast of B/W screens. As someone who only reads plain text books rather than graphic novels or comics, the benefit of colour book covers, highlighting and interface is not worth the potential trade-off when it comes to the actual experience of reading. So I've switched to the new Clara BW version, and super excited to receive it!
Who cares. I've played gameboy advance with a lamp accessory attached as a kid. The front light is not a big deal, it's like playing gameboy sp. I preordered Libra Color, I think Kaleido 3 is a huge improvement from Kaleido 2
@@brownwallet942 you make no sense. your gameboy in childhood has literally no meaning in e-ink devices market. most people care as the reason people go for kindle and other good brands is because of good carta displays which their white and black colors are similar to book and dont force you to use frontlight to read properly in good lighting condition. so yes, people care as it's the whole appeal of good eink display for black-white content.
@@tttyyy949 No, you are missing the point if you think I'm buying the color because I miss my Gameboy childhood, fool! I'm from Canada and I have the original Kobo. The screen of my Kobo Touch looks like paper when reading books, and the Libra's screen appears brighter by default. The Kobo Libra Color uses the third generation of Kaleido technology. People complain that the screen is dimmer compared to bw screens, but you simply have to adjust the brightness to 10-25% to achieve the same readability as the Libra and Kobo Touch, with the added benefit of color. So what are they really complaining about? What about front light is dislikable when it still looks like paper? Plus I'm bought not just because of the screen. Kaleido 3 technology is a significant improvement over Kaleido 2. It’s faster and has less ghosting, making for a better overall experience
I have to admit, I clicked on this prepared to be unimpressed. By itself, I've never seen color as a big premium feature on e-readers, because the color always looks relatively washed out. But a color, *pen-enabled* e-reader for less than the cost of the Scribe does get my attention.
I know you generally are more in the non-fiction sphere but Ithink one of the main benefits of a color display on an E-reader is comics, webtoons and colored manga. These all take up much more space than books. I have single volumes that take up the equivalent of 100-300 books depending on size. So I think storage on these should be very important for anyone that reads these regularly.
I love Kobo. I’ve been using their devices since the start. The Elipsa is my current go to. I would love to see colour technology reach the bigger screens.
I have a Libra 2, and I'm not totally in love with the page turn buttons, but it's for a slightly different reason. I find they activate fine from whatever position my thumb ever lands on them, but sometimes the reader itself lags and it takes a second button press for it to actually respond, and then I have to press the page back button to get to the page to which I was originally trying to turn.
Exactly! I’m honestly blown away by all the hype and interest in a color ereader. If you’re wanting color that bad in an ebook, then nothing can beat an iPad with a matte screen protector.
It’s not for everyone, I imagine people Who I like graphic novels/ comics will want this. But it is cool and has a spec upgrade for those looking to upgrade from older kobo devices.
Thanks for making these videos, as someone looking to get onto E-readers, you have made it a much easier journey. I was set on getting the Kindle basic as people seem to love the size and feel. After reading more into Kobo, I feel the ecosystem is more for me. I'm now stuck on size as I feel the Libra screen would be great for comics but I worry about losing that comfort factor with that extra size. As we don't have them in stores to look at, could I get your opinion on comfort and portability of the Libra vs the clara/kindle basic size. Thanks again
Hey there! Thanks so much for the kind words. The Clara is much more portable than the Libra, but that's not to say that the Libra isn't portable at all. I guess it depends on how much portability you need. If you're going to be putting it in your bag or backpack, it won't matter much either way. I think a bigger factor to consider is if you need/want the page turn buttons. At the end of the day, they both help us read books, which is what matters. If you don't read color, I will say that the black and white Clara is probably the best bet for clarity and comfort.
@@Maneetpaul amazing thank you for getting back to me. I think because I have so many comics I always want to get through, I'll give the Lebra a go. Then I can always pickup a bw Clara when I can justify it. Keep doing what you do buddy.
i have my eye on the libra 2 but i'm waiting for more reviews. I thought i could read graphic novels and comics. and allowing my son to borrow kid/picture books from the library 🤔 i also wonder if another stylus can be used
I ended up canceling my preorder. I wanted it I love the idea of color, the screen size, and stylus use. But, I have so so so many kindle books, audiobooks on audible that link to my kindle books. On my iPad the ebook and audio follows along with it I don’t have to turn pages. I just feel like kobo books and especially audiobooks are expensive! I have 200 audible books and am not impressed with kobos version of kindle unlimited and I was gifted 2 years of KU for Christmas lol . But man, if I had th extra cash, I’d maybe get one but I really hope Amazon gets it together.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. When I saw this on the Kobo website, I got very excited! But I only bought a new Clara E last year (when my 10+ year old predecessor died - your reviews were really useful!) so I don't think it's worth switching. In addition, I don't read graphic novels on my eReader. Maybe by the time I need to replace this one (in 9+ years hopefully), the colour screens will be even better and may even work without the front light.
Definitely looking forward to your review of the Libra Color. I love the idea of color book covers but other than that I really wouldn't take advantage of the color layer! Would love to see your analysis of the trade-offs
my interest are: 8-10 inch (because PDFs), and B/W only. I own an Inkpad 4 since 4 weeks, and i-m quite ok with it, but next year i would gladly upgrade to something newer, speedier, or bigger, in pace of max. 260 euros.
Definitely disappointing they didnt improve the Sage with all of its issues. Color is more used with bigger media like magazines or comic books and an 8 inch should be what they're pushing out for this.
The only issue Sage has is that people don't like the shorter battery life. It's not a big deal and I'm a heavy reader, usually reading 1-3 books weekly. It honestly surprises me that people who use cell phones get freaked over the idea of hooking up a device to a charger a couple times a week. Yeah, it's not what people are used to from e-ink, but it's a trade-off. I don't want a HEAVY 8" screen device, I want one that I can hold and read on comfortably. Sage rocks! I've owned a baker's dozen e-ink readers, (Nook, Sony, Kobo, Kindle) and Sage is the best of the whole lot. I don't particularly want or need color on Sage either. Most books don't use it, other than the covers. I'd rather they stay with the glorious Carta screen than go color. That said, I love my Sage so much I might be willing to get a color one if they produce such. But I'm hoping they continue to produce a BW version as well. An 8" reader still isn't large enough for PDF or magazines, so really, an Elipsa Colour would be the best for those use cases. Can't speak to comics or manga, don't read those.
I'm hoping they just didn't want to release too many ereaders at once and the sage color, sage bw, and libra bw will be coming out in a few months.. They released 3 ereaders so makes sense that they might be splitting the releases between two releases?
@@joshgiraud I'd probably buy BOTH a Sage BW and a Sage Colour. Sage BW first though. My eyes are old and fussy. Text quality is a higher priority for me than color.
Color is great if you read comics or manga. I just read books, so a color screen has never been a desire of mine. I have an older Kobo that still works, and the library lacks the books I like to read, so I will stick with my Kindle. It will be interesting to see how Amazon responds.
Does the new libra with pen capability need a kobo pen or will it work with my other EMR pens? I have S Pen and staedtler digital noris. I think boox and Kindle scribe should sell their devices without pens for people who already have compatible pens to reduce the price and e waste.
I'd love to have another eReader, but my last nook purchase soured me. It died 2 weeks after the warranty expired, and after that, I just use my Fire tablet or phone for reading.

Preordered the Libra colour and I’m so excited to get it 😍 I’ve been so disappointed with Amazon. I love Kobo and Boox.
Why would I want to buy a Kindle? Filled with ads, proprietary, and DRM. No library connection. Oh...and not color.

I justified preordering this because Kobo has onedrive built in. Once Amazon delivers color e-ink, it's a wrap.
