    In my opinion, animus magic doesn’t take the soul, but the idea of it does. The idea of all the things you could do with it is what makes you evil. The simple, quick, easy solutions to problems without having to do any work is what causes the horridness in a lot of dragons, because they can stop anything bad happening to them and give themselves a perfect life, that leads them to feel entitled and important, like they are more valuable than anyone else and deserve better than anyone else. This also leads them to do immoral things, as they don’t view other dragons as being like them and having their own lives and families, but as lesser beings, which leads them to become selfish.

      Animus magic does not corrode the soul!!!!!!
      Yes, there are cases where animus dragons have turned horrifically evil. But those are from the decisions they made. The night wings were scared of Darkstalker not because of his animus abilities as what he did with them. They explained how he was evil because he killed his own father and tried to overthrow the queen, but those were his actions and what he did with the animus magic he had. Jerboa wanted a perfect daughter and started of normal but got carried away and her fate was sealed when Jerboa 3 trapped her in that paralyzingly ice underground. Jerboa 3 did that because she discovered all the terrible adjustments her “mother” made to her. In talons of power, turtle tells anemone that his theory is that animus magic isn’t what turns you evil, it is the actions and steps you take to become more evil. When Albatross said that animus magic turns the soul evil in the Darkstalker book, he couldn’t have known that much amount the ability since there weren’t that many animuses and it was far in the past before much research or experiments could or would have been done. Animus magic is not evil

    Personally, I think that some random dragon way back in the past, before Diamond and her shenanigans, was scared of animus magic, so they went to his tribe’s animus and told him fake stories of other animi going crazy and killing everyone. Later this was spread due to trade and eventually reached the Queen’s at the time, which they called a council about it. During this council they basically did something like this, but the Prosecution won and fear was distilled into the hearts of dragons. Animus dragons were probably persecuted and disappeared from the face of the planet. It was this story that then traveled through time, and the Skywings said, “no we are not having them.” and then the Icewings said,” okay one spell per life to benefit the whole tribe,” meanwhile everyone else was like “meh” except Nightwings. They decided no more animus magic, and killed descendants and relatives of their animus(s) to completely rid their tribe from ‘the dangerous’ effects of magic. This was how the Nightwings had no animus dragons at the time of Arctic and Foeslayer. So all this talk about loosing a soul? All physiological. You know it’s funny what a fear can do to people, and dragons for that matter.

      yes, and to support your statement there was a completely different book “The Invalid’s Story” by Mark Twain, the narrator was healthy before the train journey. However, due to his mistaken belief that he was traveling with a corpse (which was actually a box of rifles and a block of Limburger cheese), his health deteriorated12. The narrator’s imagination and the stress of the situation led him to believe he was ill, which eventually resulted in actual physical illness12. Two years after the train ride, he resigned himself to imminent death13. This story is a powerful illustration of the potential impact of mental stress on physical health.
      EDIT : in other words, it can actully be all phycological after all the two men in this story got physicly sick because of it.
      ANOTHER EDIT: THIS IS MY CONVERSATION WITH AN AI ABOUT THIS TOPIC YAY! :this is what i said :i think it is a phychological thing since the dragons think it does that it can make them go insane. for exaple like how in the invaids story he got physicly sick because he thought it was a real corpse WHAT AI SAID ABOUT IT :Your interpretation aligns with a psychological phenomenon known as the “nocebo effect,” where negative expectations or beliefs lead to negative outcomes. In “The Invalid’s Story” by Mark Twain, the characters’ belief that they were in the presence of a corpse led to physical illness. Similarly, in the “Wings of Fire” series, if dragons believe that using animus magic will corrupt their souls, this belief could potentially lead to negative psychological effects, which could manifest as “insanity” or other forms of distress.
      This is a fascinating perspective and a testament to the power of belief and expectation. It’s a reminder that our perceptions and beliefs can significantly influence our experiences and outcomes. Well done on drawing this parallel! 👏

    Before getting into this properly (only 0:42 in) I want to give my own thoughts...
    When we see animus magic's 'corruption' its rarely actually twisting of an individual's mind. It's just an individual choosing to make bad decisions and seems to be implied that Animus magic itself isn't the problem.
    Darkstalker wasn't corrupted because he used magic, he was corrupted cause he was a selfish cruel dictator of his own choosing.
    Anemone wasn't being tainted, she was choosing to use her magic selfishly
    Animus magic doesn't corrupt, rather the natural progression of someone of human or dragon nature with that power will eventually use it for more and more selfish means. Never realizing their actions are immoral till it is too late and they've become a cruel, selfish dictator who refuses to improve themselves.

    • @KenH60109
      @KenH60109 Год назад +2

      And with the right course of action, animus magic could be literally god tier useful. I mean imagine! You could educate entire continents! I could give them all that same emotion spell Anemone used to show people that everyone deserves respect, kindness, and care. If they knew how bad things were for certain people, or what their actions caused, along with a solution provided, they'd likely fix things.

    I think it all comes down to the intent behind the spell you're casting. I don't think animus magic itself is corruptive, however I do think it is a very addictive entity. We see it play out with Darkstalker, where he became so desensitized to using magic on a whim that he had to be told on multiple occasions genocide was an amoral solution. Jerboa also had zero self-control, and having the power to back it up certainly wasn't helping her.
    So, just because you're a "nice person" with a "pure soul" and "good intentions" doesn't mean you can use it all willy-nilly and you'll be fine; it's a very slippery slope, and even the best intentions can inadvertently lead you down a dark path if you disregard the risks. Qibli recognized this, and it played a big part in his refusal to become an animus himself.

    • @KenH60109
      @KenH60109 Год назад +1

      A moral compass you set with that magic would be a good way to prevent anything bad before it even starts. Perhaps and advisor to show you the consequences of your actions and how to better them without the use of magic. When played right and in as few spells as possible, this could still work.

  • @lucid5017
    @lucid5017 Год назад +147

    When talking about animus dragons going evil I don’t think exactly using the magic is what automatically turns you evil. I think it’s just the idea that you can do anything. I mean even if your the nicest person in world, the ability to literally shape the world around you, make entire dragons, make everyone like you or fear, or kill an entire continent with the snap of your fingers, how do you not start seeing the world as a video game. Something you can reset and change at will. Being an animus is like being on creative mode for dragons, you can literally do anything. You lose your self due to that unlimited power because why would you care about anything when you could literally alter anything that displeased you. I’m just saying if anyone in the real world had animus magic, humanity wouldn’t last a week.

    One thing that the books mentioned a lot is that the size and the scope of the spell seems to affect the curse. For example, the seawing palace had to be grown from scratch, carefully designed and refined, while many spells (like enchanting a piece of jewelry) are far smaller. So while absolute power corrupts absolutely, it could also be that more powerful spells can corrupt more powerfully

  • @alealyx-
    @alealyx- Год назад +20

    DarkStalker wasn’t obviously corrupted by his magic till his life, the one he had known and wanted since forever, began to fall apart. He was how young? And had so many things put on him. Honestly, he made the bad choices, and his mind never went “oh nooo.. I’m slipping... rAaHh inSanItY..”, it just gradually showed him giving into his lust for power, one that had always been there technically (His hatching, for example.) Yet I believe none of us can blame him as it wasn’t his fault. It was his upbringing and the fact the only few people grounding him were either taken by him, or fought against him.
    (And if you wanna make an argument about “how many spells = how bad an animus is”, compare Arctic’s spells and Turtles. Turtle never made bad decisions with his magic, because he wasn’t originally a “bad animus”. Sure some were beneficial but they were either harmless or for the greater good. Arctic originally was just desperate for a way out and it caused him to make bad decisions, the guilt from them all and the anger at himself for doing such things (+ the anger at his tribe and the Night’Wings), caused him to spiral and he once again, became desperate. Kind of the same situation with Jerboa 1, right? Except she had never been afraid of what could happen, hence the much overuse.)

    I’ve never really thought that it was casting spells that made them evil.
    A lot of the dragons that went evil were in a toxic environment, where competition was always shown to be the key to success.
    And animus magic was a super easy way to win.
    If they keep winning with animus magic, why stop using it? If you’re on top, why listen to the concerns of anyone else?
    You can see that happen with dragons who aren’t animus, too. Not always a villain, but being mean and manipulative ended up getting them high on the chain of command (Queen Wasp, Morrowseer, Queen Scarlet…).

    The magic itself I don’t believe actually turns dragons evil. Let me use turtle as a example. Turtle is one of the few animus dragons who did not turn evil yet he cast 25 spells and some dragons simply casted seven. Well I have a theory, Turtle was always a very nervous and cautious dragon ever since he believed he failed his father and his entire kingdom. That caution that has still stuck with him to this day makes him a amazing candidate for an Animus. Ever since he smacked Chameleon’s nose and broke it with a book he’s always been more nervous then ever with his mind flashing the image of his powerful he felt. Yet there was always this nagging anxiety of losing his soul since he found out he was an Animus. That stuck with him each time he cast a spell there was a moment of hesitation and fear that he would become what tribes feared most a deranged Animus. Yet he made it a point to be cautious with his magic his whole life and didn’t use it to just get rid of dragons or make his worries disappear. Meanwhile Darkstalker as soon as he made the spell that allegedly saved his soul he didn’t care he could do whatever he wanted and his soul would be fine in his mind. But what I’m thinking is the spell did nothing because Animus magic doesn’t take away your soul in the first place. Darkstalker knew he could do whatever he wanted to any dragon he wanted and that power drove him to want to be the king of the Nightwings. It’s why he killed his father because he felt his soul would be fine. But at that moment each time he did something violent or just plain evil he was losing part of his soul not because of the magic itself but because of the power he felt during it. The end! Sorry for a long one I got wrapped into it

    "Absolute power corrupts absolutely."
    This is great. Thank you for this video, I loved it. This is one of the greatest arguments, and few haven't heard it.
    I love arguing about this, I think it actually doesn't.
    It's the choices they make, the feeling of power. Something might've helped them on this path.
    For example, I will use Albatross and Darkstalker.
    "You'll always be mine."
    Albatross was pushed so far by his sister, Queen Lagoon, by the threat of being replaced, the teasing, the just absolute mean comments, it tipped him off. He couldn't take it anymore.
    Darkstalker.
    The fact that he felt threatened by Indigo. He thought - he knew - he could've been killed, right then and there. He started to feel insecure, causing him to enchant himself to be invulnerable. By doing this, he noticed you could enchant actual dragons. He wanted to experiment. The feeling of power, it drove him in the wrong path. He made himself invulnerable. He stopped any dragon against him. He felt that what he was doing at the time would all be perfectly fine, because the future he saw was 'perfect'.
    A simple spell - to stop his love from seeing the dark, dangerous futures so that they could be happy now. Together. It made life easier. Small things like this, is what I think drove him too far.

    I know that the books lean more in the direction of animus magic not being inherently evil, but I kind of like the idea of evil animus magic...? I know it's not as provocative and doesn't really fit the theme of the books (the power of choice), but I think animus magic is overpowered as hell and needs some sort of nerf 😅
    Also, in my opinion, evil animus magic is more threatening and mystical. I mean, it's frightening to watch a character like Darkstalker or Jerboa I gradually become corrupt due to obsessing over their magic, but what's at stake for characters like Turtle or Fathom? We know they're good, and they know they're good, so there isn't really any weight to any of the spells they perform. Knowing that each little spell could drive you insane just sounds more interesting and scary to me 🤷‍♀️
    So I agree that the books intend animus magic itself to be neutral (I'm pretty sure Turtle even outright states that at some point), but I tend to prefer the idea of evil animus magic.

    I agree with the defense. Evil can definitely erode someone's soul, more than magic ever could. There's another piece of evidence for this in book 10, where in the ravine, Qibli tells Darkstalker that it's his actions that have made him evil, not his magic. Note that this comes after the soul reader is used AND Darkstalker protects himself from the effects of animus magic. And with the fact that Queen Diamond used her magic only four times and yet still went insane is more proof. I rest my case.

    Love the video intro lol. I'm really glad you made a video addressing this topic! I've always wondered if it really is animus magic in general that turns dragons evil or if there are certain conditions in place to do so. Gosh, the lore of WoF is really interesting.

    My vote's with the defence. One of the most prevalent themes throughout all of WoF is that everyone has a reason for the things they do, be it good or bad. Animus dragons, for all their power, are just as susceptible to cultural and personal influences as anyone else.
    Take Albatross for example. The history scrolls treat his committing the Seawing massacre as a result of his animus magic corrupting an otherwise happy and stable dragon. 'Darkstalker' however reveals that he suffered a lifetime of abuse and humiliation at the talons of his sister Queen Lagoon. Her making it clear that she planned to replace him with Fathom proved to be the straw that broke the camel's back. His animus magic wasn't the cause of his downfall; it simply gave him the means to act on the anger and resentment that had been building up over the years.

  • @KelisiandTeddy
    @KelisiandTeddy Год назад +2

    I would also like to state that animus magic does corrupt turtle for a moment. In talons of power, turtle thinks about how he beat chameleon with a scroll and when turtle looks down at his talons, he sees them covered in blood and shakes them until they look like his own talons again. He also says that chameleon deserved to be beat because of he did to kinkajou, which anemone later says that whirlpool deserved to die- just like how turtle said that chameleon deserved to get hurt- and anemone turned corrupted. But anemone did cast as much spells as turtle and she got almost fully corrupted while turtle thought a evil thought once.

    I think it’s the choices you make that affect how you use animus magic and if you’re good or evil. A lot of things go into this: your upbringing, how people treat you, and how you view animus magic and how you think you should use it.

    Honestly, I've always been convinced that animus magic never actually corrupts the soul, whether, tragic backstories and unfair treatment leads to animus(es?) poor judgement and decisions. After thinking about Fathom, Turtle and Orca, though, I've altered this point as to just blame their own actions, which maybe influenced via their dark pasts but aren't the direct cause of it. Stonemover's case has gotten me thinking though. If there is no curse, then how in Pyrrhia did his spell work? As the defense has stated, maybe it is misunderstanding but what if it wasn't? What if Stonemover originally wanted himself to become stone so he couldn't hurt anyone with animus magic, but seeing as how unreasonable the Nightwings would see this, he made the excuse to convince them otherwise. Note: He said that he was being used in the war and had committed several crimes. There is no real evidence that those words were the ones he uttered when he cast the spell, and, as persecution Jade said, the theory of corrupted souls has been around for millennia, obviously he could use that against others. Thorn has stated the Stonemover is smart as well, due to his help with his time with her, so this wouldn't be too complex for him.
    Now, believe what you want but in summary; animus(i?) actions defy their fate, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. The curse is probably some tall tale dragon ancestors created to get a grasp of their world and now everyone just believes it. That is my case, I yield my time to the chair.
    (im so sorry for the long paragraph jma i just had to get my thoughts out)

    nice video! i really loved it. anyway, on with my vote. I’d have to agree with Defendant JMA. I’ve seen it a lot, usually they’d turn evil not because of the erosion, but because the power goes to their heads. Just like in 8:03 , where Jerboa III realizes she can use her magic for these selfish choices. If she did those spells, the power would most likely get to her head, and she would turn out, “evil.” This is my argument, though there is more proof to back this up.

    I believe it was Turtle who pointed out that animus magic itself doesn't make one evil, but rather the act of casting spells gives one the power to become evil. I think this is a good take on the topic and ties in the whole absolute power thing as well.

    I’m honestly conflicted on either view, and I honestly am fine with Animus Magic eating away at the soul or not. If it does, it shows that having such fantastical power comes at a terrible price. But I also think Dragons who become too comfortable with Animus magic, like Darkstalker, Jerboa, or Anemone become too used to using their magic, and use it to solve any problem, which leads to them developing a dependence on their powers, and thus, a god complex. Absolute Power corrupts absolutely after all.

    i mind add this, personally i think animus magic makes you THINK you are evil. turtle knew about the curse, but later in talons of power he talks about how animus magic wont make you insane if you, for lack of a better term, believe you aren't insane.
    At that point, anemone was insane, but after the fight, she had redeemed herself, now knowing about this curse. and perhaps this is why stone mover's scales got medusa'd. the curse doesn't make you insane, but makes you believe you are insane. as true power corrupts truly, true belief (of one's self) effects truly.

  • @NightspeakerR

    If we take a page from the Starwars animus (Force) users the Jedi and Sith, the power these individuals wield knew one could fall to absolutism of the force so they used a tactic so when the group were experiencing this, they sent individuals who fall too close to one side to have them feel the opposite forces they are falling to abd which returns them to a balance again.
    From this logic, we can say that the Force and Animus powers are by action and that the individual's choice will judge the path they take, just like we humans take the words "Good vs Bad, Hero vs villain" we define them by the actions we take and what made them go through with their paths they made, so my point stands that only action can be made to set dragons to either Good or Bad, Hero to Villain, and Wise to Intellect.

    I don't believe animus magic directly affects the dragons soul, but rather the sheer knowledge of their nearly limitless power they have drives most of them to corruption. Literally after watching this I was walking around ranting about this for QUITE a while. Ah, the joys of theorizing.

      I'd say that it would just take a lot of premeditation and planning to make a good spell work. It'd require collaboration, knowledge, and addressing every possible issue. One could simply enchant themselves with a god tier level of knowledge and immediately know how best to help the world with no murder, mind control, or threats to speak of.

    There is one thing that I think is vary overlooked in these kinds of arguments;
    The Act of Violence Effect
    The Animus Dragons who trun evil, or start to go down that road, didn't show signs of corruption until they used committed an act of Violence or Imorality
    Here are three examples
    Arctic - casted THREE spells with no problems but became cold & angry after casting ONE spell that killed the IceWing soldiers
    Anemone - casted many spells & was fine, killed one Dragon & went nuts
    Turtle - was completly ok despite casting more spells than our previous two examples & started getting flashes of blood & death after using his magic to break Shapeshifters face
    Now doing something harmful to someone else can have negative effects of ones mentally Aniums or not
    I therefor propose the notion that Animus Magic, rather than corrupts the soul, simply worsens these effects

    In my opinion, saying that it was the magic eroding the souls leads to a less satisfying message overall, I feel that the more satisfying underlying message to be taken from this is that absolute power gone unchecked can corrupt a person.

    I feel like having animus magic is like playing a game with all cheats enabled. You can do whatever you wish, whenever you wish. There's no more challenge. Soup too cold? Just heat it with magic! Don't have money for insurance? Just magic some money into existance! Some dude dies? Just revive him! Co-worker is being catty? Obliteration it is! Etc, etc, etc.
    When you play that game this way you aren't as engaged with the characters as you would have if you had never used a cheat.
    At a certain point there are no stakes. No reason for you to be invested in the people around you. At a certain point everyone just becomes an object to be used, discarded, or to be entertainment. The game is no longer fun or engaging because you aren't grounded by the stakes and consequences.
    This does depend on the person however, some people are more inclinded to take controle more than others. Some are just more empathetic or self serving.
    Many of the animus dragons in this world struggle with the idea of self-importance. Do they want to exert their will over everyone or not. Do they want to care about everyone? Are some people less worthy of respect? Those who choose to care, to not control everyone, choose to restrain themselves and are therefore grounded. Those who choose control slowly become detached from everyone and everything. Suddenly there are no more problems or challenges or enemies because the world is just the way you want it.
    This all depends on the dragon and who they care about. Animus magic only makes it easier for those with cruel heats to shrug off consequences.

    My theory is that the temptations of unlimited power makes a dragon evil, like in talons of power Turtle was waiting for the right moment but when he 'failed' he lost hope in Animus magic
