Nearly 30 years later and this song still sounds awesome
Its timeless !!
Nearly 30 years old....Time flies....
I never thought about the day I could say that was 30 years ago...time hauls ass on by..great song, fantastic band...
They’re way ahead of their time. It still sound new, fresh.
My neighbors don't listen to The Cult but they do when I do.
This song never gets old, nor does it fail to give me chills. Love it.
Otherwise known as a classic.
Timeless
Absolutely brilliant!
Ist time I heard it was one week ago. 2022
Heck yeah. Wish I could jam like Billy Duffy - makes that guitar weep.
Too cool for glam, too soon for alternative. They never seemed to fit in....and they were brilliant.
That's what made them stand out. They had their own sound
very
Absolutely
I agree with all except the were I'd say are brilliant ;-)
Absolutely! Love em!!!👍🍺
I'm 59 years old and jam to the cult in a heartbeat!! They are to blame for at least two of my speeding tickets !!
You’re not alone mate I’m 59 too and been with The Cult the whole time! Keep on rockin
I sadly am stuck forever within gen z, but that won’t stop me from rocking out to the cult!!
2022: I got my grandson to listen to this song on Bluetooth in my car. He said, "Grandma this is a great song and outstanding group". He said he would put it on his playlist and listen to it when he gets back to San Diego to the Marine base and let his fellow Marines listen to it.
Very cool.
Semper Fidelis
One of the most beautiful and saddest songs to come out of the 80's
Few people remember who Edie Sedgwick was today, but this song is about her and her demise.
She was an actress and model and heavily under the direct influence of Andy Warhol during the "The Factory" years
Edie had a whole life and bright future ahead of her, right up to the day she died in her sleep on an overdose of barbiturates. (prescribed as medication)
There is a whole lot more to the story, but regardless, the story is a sad one and the Cult gave her an honoring with this amazing song.
Edie appeared in Vogue in August 1965 as a "youthquaker," as well as a fashion layout for Life magazine in the September 1965 issue. On February 13, 1966, Edie (along with Warhol and Wein) were photographed for The New York Times Magazine. With the glamorous Edie in tow, Warhol made the rounds of parties and gallery openings, and the dynamic duo generated reams of copy and free publicity. Thousands of fans mobbed them at an opening at the University of Pennsylvania. Originally an outsider, Warhol was now wooed by wealthy socialites and becoming a major part of the art establishment.
In 1966, Warhol approached his musical "discovery" Lou Reed with a proposition. According to Reed, "Andy said I should write a song about Edie Sedgwick. I said 'Like what?' and he said, 'Oh, don't you think she's a femme fatale, Lou?' So I wrote 'Femme Fatale' and we gave it to Nico."
Read a book about Edie years ago
@@cathyskywalker77 her story is a strange one, kind of, she was very sensitive and not really suited/strong enough for the drug-filled life she fell into.
A sad story too, of a girl who had the world in her hands and didn't know it herself.
@@j0hnn13K Very true...
A wonderful tribute ❤
A brilliant band. I am 61 here in 2024 and I listen to The Cult all the time. I miss the early days of The Cult...Sweet Soul Sister

The Cult tight as hell, so underrated.
All of their music is solid!
Still amazing in 2023! Deeply touching on a soul level. Rock lives and I love it still!!!! Still beautiful ❤️
"Why did you kiss the world goodbye. Dont you know paradise takes time" beautifully written lyrics
I named my first born Edie. Love this band so much. Can't wait to see them play Sydney Opera House in November. Got tickets today. So pumped.
This is really a masterpiece. A culmination of all their amazing songwriting and this is where Billy Duffy really gets to shine. I don’t understand why people of my generation don’t appreciate this music for what it is, but Im just happy that this band was introduced to me. (Billy Duffy is one of my idols)
I sure fucking do
@@milieu675 Hell ya!
Billy Duffy taught me more about songwriting in 3 songs than my previous 4 years of writing. "If you didn't write something that people can tap their foot to then you didn't write a damn thing". Read that in an interview in the very early 90s.
I'm with u on Billy Duffy he was a Kool guitarist he knew what he was doing he didn't get recognized like everybody else but that's okay I know he's real
Totally
In my all time top 5 favorite songs. The guitar riff gives me chills.
Ciao Baby
Billy Duffy one of the most underrated guitar players ever

Cale Charlie. anyone see the batman symbol?
..and with the awesome Matt Sorum on drums...who later went to Guns and Roses :(
One of the top 5 male rock vocalists of ALL TIME!!!
And sexy too
Very underrated for sure 🎸🌃
Ian Astbury should have been bigger! Totally underrated. He rocks me to my core!
100% agree
I really agree! It's one of the most bands ever next to the Cure and Sisters of Mercy and the Mission and so on......
I'm not saying he should replace Adam Lambert with Queen.... But he totally could if he wanted to 😁
Billy Duffy was a wicked G player too!!!
@@zootius his voice has gone now.
Can't hit those power notes so he just skips them.
I don't always listen to The Cult, but when I do, so do my neighbors!

The Cult is timeless man. Timeless.
Such a beautiful tribute to Edie and I'm here for it. This is the kind of rock that lives in your soul forever.
Well said. Many of the best rock songs have been inspired by women and this is one of the best examples. Edie Sedgwick was cool, if for no other reason than putting up with Andy Warhol's nonsense.

This song Rips my heart out 😢
I remember back in 89 I bought the cassette of this album. Firewoman was the first hit at the time but when I heard this....this was it....one of best songs I ever heard. Still sounds great to this day 33 years later.
FABULOUS🙏Music, IAN, Culte song for « CULT BAND »
That was the first introduction to the Cult that I had. Saw the video on MTV.
you got that right!
I love this comment for the pure nostalgia. My first ever music purchase was a Bon Jovi single (‘Always’) on cassette and I wore that damn thing out. Not a fan of the song now but back then? Ooft…
Edie definitely stands the test of time much better! ♥️
Sounds great live too. Im about to go see them live again in May. Didn’t know what this song was about til I stayed at Hotel Chelsea and now it’s made me love the song even more. I was 16 when the album came out and just didn’t have a clue 😂
This is not only The Cult's finest song, it is one of rock music's per se - a true masterpiece !
The cult...just like van Halen is one of the most underrated groups of all times
Very good song but u r leaving out too many other great songs off Sonic Temple also Love Removal Machine
Indian Woman too
Edie Sedgwick is buried in a small cemetery in the Santa Ynez valley right behind the mountains of my town of Santa Barbara. Gonna visit her grave one of these days. Ciao Baby.
was she one of Andy Warhol's girls?

Love Ian's powerful vocals and the amazing guitar sound of Duffy. This song gives me the goosebumps. One of their best. A masterpiece without a doubt. Peace.
you got that right! Ian has a such amazing voice at all times!
Saw them last year and Ian's voice was phenomenal. He and Duffy still got it!!
I've never been a fan of The Cult, as I like thrash/prog metal more. But this song is bloody epic, just can't stop listening to it. And just read about Edie at Wikipedia, poor soul, I hope she is resting in peace now.
Arguably one of the most underrated bands in Music History!
Bollocks mate.
only thing underrated is your stupidity and nothing more!!!!
Remember Edie Sedgwick and try to figure out what she coud be alive today. Gone so soon. Great hommage here. Thanks Ian!
I love the song but Edie Sedgwick was just a spoiled rich kid strung out on Andy Warhol meth. Never get the appeal of that terrible NY scene.
Tragic...she paid the prize of losers
when i was little my dad would always play this song and it would always make me sad, now understanding the lyrics it completely breaks my heart.
Gosh, how I loved this music, him and his...beautiful hair..

In my opinion, The Cult was a band with their own ideas and style ...Something difficult to find in those years ...Cheers for them!
pretorianteacher
The fact that Ian Astbury sang for The Doors says it all!
not true, another great hair band...
Lance Cohen nope.. they have punk/goth roots, but Billy Duffy was exposed to both 70’s glam/hard rock and punk/gotg which influenced them.. they had something more than Poison and their ilk.. oh, they started out as Southern Death Cult..
@@lancecohen9950 LOL they were a british hard rock band with roots in gothic rock and punk. Nothing to do with the silly american hair bands...
Well I think even the band would admit they didn’t have a single original musical thought in their heads.
But when it all came together it was masterful.
Amazing story about Edie Sedgewick, one of Warhol's Super Stars! She died at 28 of substance abuse. Ian Astbury became enchanted with her story! & What a video! One of the BEST VIDEOS EVER!!!
Great song!! That riff! I’ve heard this song literally HUNDREDS of times over my many years of being a fan and it always gives me goosebumps. The Cult forever!

I noticed a long time ago that ALOT of their songs are played on the radio...but people don't bother to ask "who is this" , they just like the music. I even had a friend that was into metal tell me he thought it was Danzig haha. I was a little kid in the 80s but always liked this group right away. There are a great rock bank and were a great ...I guess punk or goth band. Sanctuary prob my fav song still.
Melodie Fowles they still are.

SONIC TEMPLE one of the best albums in that decade and there was alot of great albums within that decade!!

Another lost rock classic, from the time of 80s pop! Beautiful!
I love this video and the song. Ian is not only absolutely gorgeous he is at his best in performance. The Cult is a fabulous group and are no doubt the best group I have ever heard. I love Billy's leather jacket that says "Manchester" on the back. I know he is proud of where he comes from. I would be too. The live orchestra is an added special bonus.

One of my favourite singles. Can't go wrong with a bit of rock ballad and string section!..
my god what a killer tune! can listen over and over. never get enough
I do
Lately listening a lot.
I have good news and a clarification for an earlier commentator who is referring to this band in the past tense. Although it could be said that they were to cool for Glam and too soon for Alternative, I’m happy to say that the iconic Rock band known as The Cult has never permanently stopped churning-out it’s uniquely creative and powerful brand of Rock music. The great albums keep coming so keep your eyes and ears out for their newest release that’s said to be currently in the works. Ian, Billy and the others are still more than happy to bring their great music straight its’ fans around the world via the road so stay informed because I believe that those tours bringing their blistering shows are yet to come. It can truly be said that the band known as The Cult is “like a fine wine”. (Oh yea . . . . and they still manage to avoid fitting-in and that’s fine by me!)
It's rock for outsiders. All along, that's kinda what rock was always intended to be.
I absolutely love the Cult. But last time I saw them, Ian was horrible. He let the audience do 75% of the singing, he acted like he didn't want to be there, and was almost two hours late starting. He was a better front man back in the day.
Sonic temple, uno de los mejores discos de la historia del rock..
Tremenda banda!! Y que poco valorada
A such an iconic, beautiful song, and also so beautifully written and portrayed. Awesome!!

Touches my soul everytime I hear this song . Memories , people we'll never see again , until our end . Love this
This is one of the most beautiful songs of all time.
This is about Edie Sedgwick, a socialite who formed part of the artist Andy Warhol's Factory scene in New York in the '60s. Sedgwick featured in several Warhol films, including Poor Little Rich Girl and Beauty No. 2. Her final movie role was as Susan Superstar in Ciao! Manhattan, which was written and directed by John Palmer and David Weisman. This song takes the "Ciao Baby" part of its title from this film.
Sedgwick lived a troubled life that was plagued by mental health issues and drug addictions. In 1971, Sedgwick died of an overdose. She was 28 years old. The film, Factory Girl, starring Sienna Miller, is about Sedgwick.
Not only do I love the Cult, but I Love Eddie Sidgwick (that is who the song is about). I was saw them in concert twice back in 1999 and met Ian Astbury. Great time!
The Cult - An outstanding band and standing the test of time. God I love you guys.
This song will always transport me back to a time that I really, really miss... damn.
Nothing is eternal except the emotions we hold in our hearts. And every emotion, big or small, has its song.
Always said you were a youthquaker, Edie
A stormy little world shaker
Oh, Warhol's darling queen, Edie
An angel with a broken wing
The dogs lay at your feet, Edie
Oh, we caressed you cheek
Oh, stars wrapped in your hair, Edie
Life without a care
But your not there
Oh, caught up in an endless scene
Yeah, paradise a shattered dream
Oh, wired on the pills you took, Edie
Your innocence dripped blood, sweet child
The dogs lay at your feet, Edie
Oh, we caressed your cheek
Oh, stars wrapped in your hair
Oh, life without a care
Ciao baby
Shake it, boy
Oh, sweet little sugar talker
Paradise dream stealer
Oh, Warhol's little queen, Edie
An angel with a broken wing, oh
The dogs lay at your feet, Edie
Oh, we caressed your cheek, well
Stars wrapped in your hair
Life without a care yeah, yeah, yeah
Don't you know paradise takes time?
Ciao baby, yeah
