I'm getting back into the Cult after years away and can't believe that I had forgotten just how brilliant they are. In fact, the more I re-listen to their back catalogue I can hear similarities with many more modern artists. Brilliant.. and this is one of the best.
brilliant until America tried to turn them into money makers. Fortunately those Europeans failed. Thank you Ian. Duffy was the rotten fruit, though a brilliant guitar player.
What make him so astounding are those incredibly musical guitar riffs he has written and plays so deftly.... He is one bad ass.... And to be so talented, I would think he would have to possess the tortured artist syndrome, but he is very accommodating and ground when he speaks.... But, he is never distracted and always on the mark with the guitar parts.... He is locked onto the kick drum... Ian looks like he has cleaned up some in this performance......
FYI: This song is about a woman named Edith Minturn Sedgewick or "Edie" who was a muse and then exploited by Andy Warhol ("Warhol's Darling Queen") in the 1960's. "Ciao" is a reference to a movie she made called "Ciao Manhattan". She had a horrible childhood even coming from such a rich (historical & financial) family, and had a serious problem with drugs and mental illness. She was dead at 27 years old in 1971...
Edie was already headed down the road to pill junkie-dom before she met Warhol. But hanging around the Factory turned her into a major speed freak and then there was her eight months hooked on heroin while part of Dylan's inner circle. Booze and smokes were non-stop too. She had one foot in the grave during the making of Ciao Manhattan.
And in reality, she WAS referred to as a "Youthquaker" at the factory..... I've always had a monster crush of Edie Sedgwick and the Cult (and Death Cult... and Southern Death Cult) were always one of my favourite bands, so this song strikes quite a chord with me, also. Though for me it's the last line. "Why did you kiss the world goodbye? Ciao, baby..... Don't you know paradise takes time?" Damn. All I can say is....... "Damn."
These guys are so underappreciated imo. So incredible! Though i don't care much for what Ian was doing with all the pauses. My guess is it had been awhile since he sang cult songs regularly and they take A LOT of breath control and practice or you'll just get winded and lose your voice. My vox have gotten stronger since i started singing about every other day for the last 2 years. Cult songs were always a blast for me, but whooo, if you don't breathe right, yer effed
That's just Ian being Ian... I'll never forget him in Atlanta back on the Sonic Temple tour (opening for Metallica - summer of 89) coming out with a rebel flag and yelling, "Let's hear some of that southern rebel spirit!!!!" Obviously, the crowd went nuts. Not the sort of thing you expect an English bloke to come out and yell... hehehehh Just another part of what makes Cult show so much damn fun.
I got interested in this song when I heard it years back. I realize her names was Edie like mine but this song is sad. Learned that it was about Edie Sedgewick and what a mess up life she had. Beautiful but I think although she was special she was too messed up. She killed herself. That's very sad.
🎼👍🏿❤️MAGNIFICENT🙏2022.👋listen and listening always » CIAO BABY »💁Bad choice Edith, RIP 👋☮️no MODÉRATION for me👋3.03 Chills, IAN Sensitivity 💥❤️MAGIC song🙏💙here, so great than yesterday 😹🤷🏻♂️
Man the mid eighties were there best live period when Ian was drinking the energy he put in was the best band live in the world at the time!!!!!! Period. He would go of about drugs and addiction and earth mother an this an that. To see them now you're not going to get that error. Ians voice is not the same and don't move around but still worth seeing. Best live band I have seen
Had, still have, a '79 Trans Am which was my senior year car, '88. Used to drop Tim and Chris off at home after hanging out at the bowling alley and giving the waitress a fiver to bring us pitchers of Michelob. We were coool. After Tim was dropped off I'd throw this tape in my Super tuner 3 and wind it up. It was 11min to my house. I could listen twice.
28 yrs old. discovered this song randomly. fucking EPIC.
55 now and this was my youth. Fucking awesomeness
The summer this album came out was pure magic
Brings me back to 1989…. Long gone days…
Had the 45 of this.....glory days... powerhouse
When Summer MEANT something…..the world has changed so much that it is hard to describe….not for the better either.
@@jefflanham1080I couldn’t say it better myself.

They are so dang good.
They still delight. Love them 💖

This song motivates me when I have no motivation, I just put it on repeat. Love it.
Pezzo bellissimo. Ian Astbury uno dei front men più carismatici mai visti nei miei 68 anni di vita. Voce sempre stupenda.
This song always moves me to tears ❤💔
I love Ian's voice. Very unique.
Is there a better guitarist than Billy Duffy around? The man can make a guitar sing like few others. Simply brilliant.

He's rated exactly where he should be.

I love Ian usually but the placing and weird pauses was bugging the hell out of me
@@Sindollx666x you've no adventure in you.

Thanks for the background on the song. Never knew this. Did Warhol get her into drugs, etc.?
misterjameswest Just read her story on Wikipedia. Sounds like her and her family had a very sad life.
misterjameswest I think that She was with Bob Dylan... and He got herself into drugs.. It's a sad history.
Edie knew the factory crowd before she ever met Bob Dylan... the Factory crew got her into drugs. Read the book "Edie" by George Plimpton!

My favorite CULT Song!
That first line that Ian rings out.. "You said you were a youthquaker, Edie..." always gives me chills. Sounds so haunting
Vogue magazine dubbed her that in 1965 at the height of her fame.
Good to see you can still smoke and play the guitar...! Outstanding work.
What a bass line sustaining all the voices around. Big fan of you. Very glad to saw you in Brasília.

@Perle Pinpin I was so excited when I got to see them live in a small club in Seattle back sometime around 2012-2014
