For a while smartphones weren't integrated into cheaper services so people were left with only what could have provided..... usually a shitty flip phone or something like a blackberry.
They really do! Many people in Japan use flip phones, but I've been told they are still smartphones. (but even if not, nothing wrong with not having a smartphone, I hate them even though I have one)

@Black Rod why? Does zubaida have a particular meaning? It would have been *particularly* funny for the joke if Kumail had said that the women's name was Rashida, because that name means righteous or faithful in Arabic. But Kumail is Pakistani so maybe he doesn't know what.

I am extremely sorry to say that Kumail is just a guy who is not even a practicing Muslim (practicing in terms of knowing how to respect the rudiments of a religion). For me that is completely fine, whatever he does I am not concerned with his lack of allegiance to a faith he claims to have. Simple is, If I believe in something, I would only believe if I truly think it to be right and that I can protect it.
I do not find Kumail credible enough to be even quoted now. None but himself is ridiculing a nice and peaceful religion. If Kumail is that smart and bold, he should have researched to find a well educated cleric, a nice person who could have read his nikkah (the formal agreement for marriage).
I am a pakistani myself and I am a peaceful and practicing Muslim (Thanks to Allah). I strictly condemn Kumail's view, his derogatory comments about Islam and the way he portrayed it while knowing that people with no background of Islam; could interpret it the way they like. By this, he is not providing any correct information about a subject.
I am not saying that his story may be incorrect or that its a made-up story but all I am saying is that, international media is no way to hi light these issues. If Kumail is so educated and well -versed with Islam then he should have complained about this cleric in the Islamic Council and proceed to bring a change rather than exploiting the issue to be in a limelight. I am sorry but to me, Kumail sounds not genuinely plausible or credible from the perspective of his views about this specific issue. I also condemn the inadequate knowledge of the cleric and his behavior to such a situation. The Council/ Authorities registering him as a cleric should question him about his knowledge, clearly.
Precisely, the ONLY DIFFERENCE between THE CLERIC AND KUMAIL was that the CLERIC HAD INSUFFICIENT KNOWLEDGE for the religion, ISLAM and KUMAIL NANJIANI HAD INSUFFICENT RESPECT for the religion Islam.
That makes both of them to be on an equal footing.

I mean, you're definitely entitled to your opinion, but his relationship to Islam is pretty much the same exact relationship I have with Christianity. I'm not a practicing Christian, but if anyone asks me, I'll shrug and say 'yeah, sure, I'm Christian.' And to make my parents happy, I'll most likely have a Christian ceremony for my wedding. When you grow up in a religion, and end up not being a fully committed and practicing religious person, it's mostly cultural/familial. And it's unfair to ask someone to either be in it 100% or don't because that means 'either be with your family or don't' to us.
I can't separate Christianity from my family because doing so means not being with them at all. And so when they pray, I bow my head. When they ask to pray for me, I let them. When they invite me to church, I'll go, etc. Yeah, it's not 'the correct way'. I agree. But to us it's more about keeping our family than it is about representing our religion. And to make people outside of that understand or be more accepting about the concessions we make for our family, we make jokes. It's not meant to be disrespectful --- it's a more a survival tactic than anything else.
I honestly don't think he said anything bad about Islam. He smack talked the cleric, not the religion. Which is what I do when I address ignorance in my own religion; I smack talk the ignorant, not the religion.

@@shubhamsarkar124 we do chill and crack up every now and then but obv there are boundaries for everything. If done within the boundaries nothing wrong with it. For example we both sit and laugh on many topics but if we start making fun of your mother and saying the worst things about her then surely you won't accept that no matter how funnt it may sound (if you have respect for her). Similarly God religion etc are out of the boundary. Your making fun of the One who gave you everything you have rifht now whether it be your eyes, legs etc Look at those who don't have these and more then you'll realize His value and when you do, joking would be far away from it. How ungrateful is one who gets so many favours from someone and then talks bad and makes fun of him. That's what this guy is doing.

That rule doesn't apply anymore because it is believed their religions have been extremely diluted to the point where their originality does not exist anymore. The closest you can get is the orthodox variation of their faiths, but even then, their religions are nowhere near to the original.

This happens in my family. My grandad is a member of the Nation of Islam but has been happily married to my grandmother, who is Christian, for 40+ years. Then my dad, who is also Muslim, married my mom who is Christian.

+Joseph P It's all relative. None of my married south asian friends have had their wedding ceremonies without major major compromises, capitulating to family demands. This is wayy minor in comparison
I agree it's 'minor by comparison,' but it's still 'not good'. Being a lesser of two evils doesn't change that it's a sad example of how authoritarian tendencies and practices, and people, are still dictating people's lives. If love can't make you override that, isn't it sad?
It probably meant a lot to his family (and him) for them to get the blessing, no matter what stupid cleric gave it. Also there were probably friends and relatives who put in effort to be there. And it took effort and money to organize the whole day. They'd probably have to change the location to thange the priest. That would take a lot of time. It's not just about her. If I were in her place I really wouldn't mind. I'd preffer the day to run smoothly and everyone be happy. She got another (her) ceremony anyway.
