  • This First Gen Toyota Tundra has been my favorite truck to own so far. It may not be the best at any 1 category, but it does everything well! This review we take the Tundra for a test drive, talk about towing, talk about the lift kit, and other modifications I have made such as wheels and tires.

I'm not very impressed with my '02 at all. I'm surprised how well it runs and shifts with 280,000 miles on it, but that's literally it. The brakes suck. The LCA/LBJ design is retarded. The steering rack sucks. The headlights suck. The seatbelt always jams up. The wiper switch, hazard light button, 4wd button, and AC recirc button are constantly getting bumped. Etc. It's a weird truck. It doesn't seem like it's great for any one thing. It's more like a LWB passenger car (Camry/Corolla) with a bed. I just don't get the hype about these things.

I just bought an 06 Tundra back in Feb 2020 for 12,800. Its an SR5 V8 2wd with only 86k miles. No rust and everything was perfect with even the timing belt replaced at 70k and a sound system. Love it so far

I have a 2006 metallic blue double cab leveled with a matching shell. We were looking for a double cab truck with a six foot bed and found a pretty good deal. We bought it a couple years ago with 198,000 miles on it. Has 225,000 now and still runs great. You're right about it not being the best at any thing other than reliability. Engine is still going strong and not consuming any oil. I haven't owned any newer trucks but this is the best truck I've had.

Ah yes... 1st Gen. Toyota Tundra and FRAME RUST, I know it well! I purchased NEW a 2005 Toyota Tundra like yours. I've treated it VERY well. Washing, waxing, cleaning, aggressive maintenance and on and on. I love this truck! Toyota has a Service Bulletin on Frame Rust for these trucks. They offered Inspection and one of two resolutions depending on what they found during the inspection. If the frame was in good condition they sprayed the frame with Rust preventative. If the Frame was rusted they replaced the Frame. I was told the Frame on my truck was only in need of the spray. Within the first year I noticed the coating they sprayed on looked to be coming off and the Frame under the coating was rusting faster than prior to the coating. I have tried MULTIPLE times to get Toyota to replace the Frame on my truck with a denied both times. I have 96,000 miles on it NOW! It was a much younger truck when all of this happened! They have a history of replacing the Frame if it was less than 15 years old. Why they deep dicked me is not known. We have nothing other than Toyota vehicles! All purchased NEW! Business must be good, or the people I had to deal with at the FACTORY level were not so good!
It's Toyota's loss! I went from a GM guy to Toyota(s). I'll be sure to let EVERYONE I can know how they didn't take care of a DEFECT. We are getting close to buying a new vehicle. Toyota will NOT be at the top of my list! Sad, so sad! Time to paint a sign and spend the weekends in front of the Dealers in my area? 🤔

I own 3 Toyotas. An 89 22re/5spd 1st Gen 4Runner, a 95 4Runner with a solid-axle-swap and a JDM sourced Turbo-diesel and full OME suspension and E-lockers and an 06 DC Tundra with the 4.7 VVTi engine. I love my 4Runners for trail work and the Turbo Diesel is amazing for road/overland trips but the Tundra is BY FAR the most comfortable and least fatiguing vehicle I own. 800miles put and back to our property in Idaho loaded to the gills... no worries. I just wish it got the milage my 1KZ-TE gets. The 4.7 barely turns 2K RPM cruising at 70mph and yet Im still only getting 18-19mpg on long hauls and 13mpg on average in daily driving to/from work (lots of rush hour bullshit traffic). Love my Tundra. Super glad I bought it.

      I’ve got an 03 4runner with the 4.7 L.
Put a magnaflow cat-back exhaust on it.
Magnaflow mufflers are the perfect balance IMO.
Sounds normal/no drone at idle and cruising speeds/rpms so it isn’t obnoxiously loud all the time.
But when you get on it, it roars and has a more “refined” (for lack of a better term) roar than a flowmaster.

These Tundra's have the 4.7 engines and are bulletproof as long as you take care of them. If you google a million-mile Tundra it has the same 4.7 engine. How many trucks can you say have reached a million miles? I believe these are the best trucks money can buy and I would take the 1st gen Tundra any day over the newer ones. You got yourself a gem buddy, especially with such low miles and condition. I would keep that truck forever!

I’M FINALY IN THE CLUB!😱 Just got my 1st, 1st gen Tundy and I LOVE IT!
Had it about 2 weeks and I couldn’t be more happy. 12K for an 04’ with 140K mls. Mostly garage kept, solid rust free frame, never worked out of Limited Ed. By the way apparently there were limited ed’s that had cloth interiors cause mine does. Also, it doesn’t have the faux wood trim. It’s 2wd which is the only thing resembling a downside but given where I live I’ll only regret it a couple times every 5 years or so. It’s worth that for the less hassle of 4wd drive issues and maintenance.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to adopting some of the mods you’ve done plus a cold air intake and magnaflow dual exhaust. One of your comments seemed to imply that act may compromise the engine’s longevity or reliability…do you feel that’s the case?

    • @Garagetopics

I have driven Toyotas all my life, and owned a 2000 Tundra for 57,000 miles. I don't know exactly what it was about it, but that truck was the only Toyota I have owned that I really did not like. No problems with it, except constant problems with the rear brakes warping and pulsing. I just did not like driving it. Probably my own fault, as I was used to smaller Toyotas and bought a full-sized Tundra when I probably did not need such a large truck. But I was glad to sell it at 57K miles, when I usually drive my Toyotas over 200K.

Bought my 05 double cab in 07 with 23k miles. just hit 180k, I've probably spent about 3500 in parts on it since then, everything that's broken was the usual things that break on them. steering rack, radiator, secondary air pump...I'm in the northeast.....luckily my frame is not rottted. Floor of the bed has some holes, really the only complaint I have in 15 years of ownership.....When it gets too bad I'll buy a new bed from the south and hopefully get another 15 years and 180k miles out of her. No doubt in my mind that this truck is a better vehicle than anyone I know has had. And I have no doubt that it'll last as long as I wish to take care of it.

Recently got an 05 double cab 4x4 with about 115,000 miles. Bought it from my dad who had it for 12 years for less than $5k. Had the frame replaced under recall a few year back and only has a small spot of rust in the back corner of the bed where the first owner jack knifed a trailer into it. I love the look of these Tundras personally, the front reminds me of older trucks from the 30's - 50's era. Maybe that's just me & my overactive imagination. Had a 2003 Tundra that I sold a year ago, looking for another one 2004 - 2006 double cab this time.

I purchased my 2002 Regular Cab 4WD V8 Tundra in 2003, it's my dedicated work truck and it has just rolled past 170,000 miles. I replaced the cracked exhaust manifolds with JBA shorties, the rest of the exhaust is stock. I replaced the factory front coil springs with a set off a 2002 4WD TRD coils, Bilstein 4600 series shocks and Michelin LTX M/S2 on a set of Toyota alloys off a 2005 Limited. I also replaced the factory tail light housings with a set off a 2005, and performed the always on fog light mod. I also have a 2007 5.7L regular cab Tundra, and as much as I like the additional power and tighter turning radius, the 2002 is a better looking truck with better build quality.

Great video...thanks for the info...I recently picked up an ‘04 DC. I want to lift it but I want to maintain factory rake. Would you recommend adding a 1” or 1.5” block to the rear to make that happen? Can the 5100s keep up with that extra lift in the rear? Also any thoughts on the Camburg UCAs vs SPC?? Specifically, any downsides to the exposed uniball? Thanks in advance!!

@@Garagetopics they do have auto climate control, they also have auto climate control for the rear seats, heated seats, auto closing mirrors, and they have 5,12 volt outlets and 8 cup holders lol, plus I only paid 3700 CAD for it, lol I love my Sequoia. I also have an 06 GX470. But the GX was 10 grand CAD.

Bought an 06 double cab xsp new, got 57,000 miles on it......stays inside.....mine had the same woodgrain..... didn't like it at all..... didn't think it went well with exterior color, silver sky metallic, or interior too for that matter, charcoal, so I popped it off....as you know, is kinda a flat black underneath.....looks tons better and I'm ok with the flat black look.....thought at one point ordering that trim in a silver/ brushed aluminum look, but never have.....love how the back window drops down.... popped the headrests off back seat.....more visibility.....👍

A local lot had an '05 Tundra double cab in great condition (no rust) and an extremely low mileage (10k miles, very tempting) '12 Ram for sale couple months ago. I passed on the Ram and jumped on the Tundra. Funny, I don't care for the squat look either even though I'm an NC boy. I love the interior on yours. I have a Ford with chrome wheels and a bed liner, but I don't think I'll mess with the bed on this one. I am leaving my wheels and tires stock too. The michelins are new and they don't rub. Full disclosure- I am a grandpa.

It's worth noting that this will work on areas that don't have deep cold and salted roadways. You're truck will rust away after 20 years. It's almost impossible to keep them newish unless you hide it for the winter

I just picked up a 2006 tundra sr5 4x4 with 142k. I traded my 2003 tacoma prerunner TRD off road crewcab with 160k miles for it. They offered me a 12k for my tacoma and the tundra was 15,5k..so technically I paid 3.5k for my tundra 4x4. Lol . I absolutely love this generation 1st gen...

Use a wax for rust protection (like GM puts on their truck frames) . Do NOT use undercoating. Undercoating will simply hold moisture and cover up the rust. I think these are great looking trucks.

If the wood is similar to Lexus then you can use a heat gun and peal it off and it reveals a nice black plastic finish underneath.
