When it comes to hearing just the Klon in JM's performances, take a listen to live performances of Paper Doll, specifically the solo from 2013-2014, especially the 2013 Letterman performance. Also just the Klon is on for the main rhythm tone (on the middle pickup) for Going Down the Road Feeling Bad from the same Letterman performance. Just a couple professionally recorded instances along with Wild Blue
Those are two fantastic examples! I'm terrible and don't pay as much attention to some of those 2013/14 tones as I should 😅 your input is always spot on my friend!
I’ve fallen in love with his tone with D&C this tour. He’s not using a ton of gain like in years past, the klon is his main OD and kicks in the TS10 when he really wants to go crazy.
It's amazing it gotta agree, best he's sounded yet with them imo, and that is another video I want to talk about! I'm trying to keep his own stuff and D&C separate
I bought the Sonicake Blue Screamer and placed it after my Mosky Silver Horse Klon Clone and was totally amazed at the tone! Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a Klon clone and TS clone.
Funny thing is the "magic" germanium 1n34a diodes dont clip till about 1:00 or so. And that's really what youre paying for because all the other components are available and in many Klones
I just got my jhs NotaKlon the other day. I love it. Playing through the clean channel on a PRS mt15 with the jhs hall reverb. I'm not a great guitar player by any stretch but man im practicing and getting good tones sure helps motivation.
A clean boost could mean 2 things: boost the clean volume, or boost the clean gain. That being said, the Klon even when really low gained, still shapes the sound and the eq.
Great stuff, your posts on the Klon have been very informative on how "the real thing" actually works, your videos are a great reference for comparing some clones of both K-style and TS10-style drives. Stoked for the gain-stacking video!
*Update* I’ve actually learned to use the Klon (Tumnus) in the PERFECT way I wanted to. I love it even more now with its 3 band eq. Man I’m in love with that pedal, it does what I want it to do PLUS it does what my hero’s tone. What else could a man ask for??? The Tumnus Deluxe and my AnalogMan Sunface nkt red dot are my staple pedals. Small pedal boards are just the best! Man I’ve rambled on for too long jajaja. Any ways to conclude, the K Circuit is NOT for everyone, it’s a specific sound that can be sculpted into whatever you want it to be, depending your set up and desired tone. Any ways good luck, all of you tone chasers
This was an incredibly helpful video. I have a RYRA Klone and was struggling to get the right light gain took. Looking forward to trying it out again having watched your video. I have a Gladio to try and stack it with so I’m looking forward to your next video. Thanks bro 🤘
Tried to copy those setting for years. I think I got pretty close with the Soul Food! > Soul Food Settings to sound very similar to Klon: Vol: 12h30, Drive: 09h, Treble: 13h > Adding Mini Spark Before with knob at 11h30 gives you extra gain for solos (slow dancing, first solo, for instance).
My main drive pedals are a Cornerstone Antique, BB side of a Duellist and RYRA Klone. I'm using the Klone as a boost into the other 2 with the gain on my Klone set at about 10-11 o'clock and then Duellist into Antique. Not really aiming for Mayer tones, but it's still in the ballpark
I recently got the bluesbreaker and I have a ceriatone centura klon and a keeley TS 808. What I have found works for me is obviously using the 808 for my heavier overdrive sound, and then using the klon kind of as a tone shaper/boost. I feel like the klon really adds some fat and character to the note. It just makes everything I play sound thicker. I really like the bluesbreaker for a lighter overdrive compared to the klon in that the gain on the BB just feels a little bit more natural to me than on the klon. I dont know if this makes sense but when I use the gain on the BB it reminds me of a fender and when I use the Klon it reminds me of using a gibson or something (which is funny because the BB is a marshall pedal). When it comes to stacking overdrive with the 808 they both sound very similar to my ear. Overall really happy with my overdrive section with these 3 on my board.
@@Neontrain you keep calling it a "klon" when it has nothing to do with that brand. You have to earn the right to use the name by owning one. Otherwise you should refer to it as the "Ceriatone Centura". That way people aren't misinformed from somebody who has no real experience.
@@Pooch1069 if you think ima type ceriatone centura every time i refer to it youre crazy. theres a reason I correctly called it that at the start. im not trying to mislead anyone into thinking i have a true klon. fact of the matter is the ceriatone centura is the best klon clone that exists in the world today. if any pedal is going to come close its that one.
Interesting... I bought one of those cheap but sonically very close MOSKY Silver Horses and the settings I dialed in are on point(!) what I see here Mayer is using. I don't even listen to that guy... I am pushing it with a TS Mini with everything at about 2 o'clock, but that one I haven't really dialed in.
@@DerBullgod tried it this morning and it was like night and day! Totally amazed at the tone I was missing by going the other way. So I’m going from Silver Horse Klon clone to Blue Screamer by Sonicake. Wow totally impressed! Thanks!
@@musicman4christjesus Always try stuff! I am still unsure about the order of TS and Klon in my setup. I might swap that around again. And checking it, I have them both at uniform gain.
I personally really love the reverb. I think the amp overall just nails the JM thing so brilliantly well. No pedals, just plug straight in and it's the instant JM sound!
Great video Justin. I am trying to put together a Mini pedalboard to get that John Mayer sound. Any recommendations for a Klon Centaur like Mini pedal out there? What's your thoughts
Justin you should really put a Mini board video together on John Mayer’s pedalboard. LOL next question to get the best John Mayer sound which Analog delay “mini” would you recommend? Closest to the Aqua-Puss 😄
Been playing since like Junior High School but never took anything seriously or actively tried to improve my playing until mid 2018. Besides the odd Mayer or Frusciante licks I played pretty much exclusively GnR and Zep riffs lol.
i love this and hope you get the bluesbreaker mk1,i Personally i had the original bluesbreaker and the honey bee double trouble pedal at the same time let say the honey bee double trouble Remains :)
Great video man. I love the Klon. I also really like John Mayor's tone and he is just an absolutely amazing guitar player, I'm just not a huge fan of a lot of his songs in general. But thanks for the breakdown.
I really wonder why people are so obsessed with any guitarists tone. Klons are absolutely not transparent if you agree that a Morning Glory is. Which it is. Of course you can tweak a Klon to sound like it isn't there. It's so easy to experiment and create magic with pedals. Why bother copying John or Jimmi or Derek or ...... Try using a compressor as a boosts before your drive with light attack and chop the lows a bit... (Cmatmods Delux Signa Comp). Oh yeah!
Well tell that to Bill because that’s how he says the Klon is to be set for that result, it’s right in the manual. I just followed how he says it is to provide context people can understand, which is the point you’re clearly missing.
