It's not "why aren't the trees falling," it's "why are the trees being sliced?" Normally you wouldn't be able to cut a tree in half like that. It's animated that way to show the bruit force and strength of the warriors, otherwise there would be no way to see just how strong Zed's opponents are. This is an epic battle between bruit strength and precision. The little detail of the trees being effortlessly sliced is BRILLIANT on the part of the animator. This whole thing is just brilliance.

THAT WAS AWESOME! Seriously, where do I even begin?! This has quite possibly some of the smoothest movement that I've ever seen in any 2D animation! I can't even imagine how many frames this had. It also has a decent amount of visual flare considering the limited color palette. It also flows very well, the fight choreography is great, the effects are incredible (Those weapon sparks in particular!), and the sound design is on point! Whoever worked on this should be proud of what he/she/they have created!

I don't think they're Ionians, If they were probably Zed would leave them, after all he's not a third force who wants to conquer Ionia but one by the Ionian side in the war against Noxus Invasion, that instead of fight defensive alongside the Kinkou, Karma Irelia and Master Yi, Zed and his order chooses to fight back aggressively in order to expulse Noxus. The enemies that Zed is fighting clearly look like Noxian soldiers in a recognition mision. Although If some Ionian tried to stop him from doing the things like he thinks are the right ones. I have no doubt that he will kill them to prevent any danger to his vision of protect Ionia
League animation "workshop" is very fitting.. you can see zed dont have his armor yet during this fight, implying that his also in trainin and as soon as he killed his enemies, he earned his cape meaning additional knowledge or skill have been learned..just like the animators who went through the workshop...just my two cent
It was his shadow fighting and he swapped with the shadow for the final kill :P That's what the cape represents, since only HE wears it, not his shadows
