yes! a lot of books in the topics that sarah reads can be filled with academic language and emotionally heavy, it’s really nice to hear them reiterated for a larger audience by someone who fully read and understands the content
You are preaching to the choir about sustainability and that contamination OCD. I have OCD, ADHD, and Autism and how I feel about and deal with germs changes from day to day and moment to moment. Sometimes Im in too much pain or dont have enough executive function to clean something or do something, so I have to live with it and then I end up going over board on other compulsions to conpensate for what I cant do. OCD is so hard to cope with, and there are so many types of OCD and OCD symptoms can vary so much from person to person. I swear every time I am struggling with something one or both of you talks about it or something pretty close to it, and I just feel less and less alone. So happy to see you guys talk so openly about stuff like this, its so important. And its so tough to go through, so knowing Im not alone is sick as heck.
i really fucking love you guys. i’m constantly feeling dread about the state of the world and people’s lack of empathy for others and listening to this pod makes me feel better, you two speak so openly about things you’ve experienced and have such good heads on your shoulders i really appreciate it 🩵
Also, Kendahl you are such a badass for living in NYC with OCD, I literally could never. The thought of living in NYC makes my OCD brain hyperventilate. Idk if you think of that as a big accomplishment or a big deal, but I think so 😊
Sarah! I wrote a book about my experience being misdiagnosed with “conversion disorder” (aka, it’s just anxiety, you’re not actually sick) as a teenager, but I actually ended up having a brain disease. I had to fight for my life as I got more and more sick and everyone thought I was faking it until I got a proper diagnosis at 16. If you feel like you would be interested, I would be honored to send you a copy!
another classy vs trashy: shopping bags. As a middle schooler, everyone would take their lunches in the reusable lululemon bags that you would get from buying clothes there. But if you carried around a grocery bag, that would be trashy despite the lulu bags not even being reused enough for it to be sustainable.
for kendahl being stressed about reusable straws id reccomend glass ones because theyre the only ones i can use because you can literally see if theres anything in it
I also have contamination OCD and my main fixations are mold and insects. I recently moved into a very DIY, not well looked after apartment with three other people (i can't afford anything else) and there is mold in the shower and roaches in the kitchen. because of the literal constant exposure therapy, i've had to get really good at dealing with mold/bugs in real time, as opposed to worrying about the possibility of these things existing. discomfort is key when it comes to managing ocd it seems!
YES to the OCD contamination intrusive thoughts - mine have gotten so much worse in the pandemic, and I even struggle with my own reusable water bottle. It’s so frustrating because I want to be sustainable, but I will Lose My Shit in certain situations (I also have the thrifting fear)
I’m a law student in the UK so I can’t comment on squatters rights in the USA, but in the UK, while Adverse Possession (the technical name) is still possible, it’s incredibly hard. It’s illegal to squat in a residential property, and you can only gain legal title through squatting if you have been in possession for at least 10 years with no interruption and without the actual owner trying to do something about it
This is a very basic and shitty answer that really doesn’t explain the whole concept of squatters rights well, but it’s what I’ve got off the top of my head haha ❤😊
@@La_1E_TJbroker in the US here- basically the same here, varies by state to state. But essentially you must prove “ocean” lookup the acronym meaning in regards to real estate
Idk if this was mentioned because I zoned out for a bunch of the podcast but mental illness and stuff is classy if you're rich and trashy when youre poor. I'm a black and poor woman with mental issues like i cant commodify my mental issues of market them for ✨relatability✨
13:10 my mum worked at a school with like 50 kids and she got one a birthday present and because of that she got called into a meeting under suspicion of grooming
Going out on a limb here for Kendahl: with what you’ve shared about being a people pleaser, I think that might tie into the perceptions & guilt you’re putting onto yourself about your sustainability efforts not being enough (which isn’t true) or your fear of being perceived as a creep for talking to kids (which is also not true). Both things are heavily talked about in the media and on social media, but most often times in misinformed or conflated ways. You know you’re not a creep and I can assure you that you’re not a creep. We know people perceive gay people as such and unfortunately that’s a trope that’s being shouted from the rooftops by conservatives, but *that’s certainly not the case they make it out to be.* That’s just homophobia at play, my friend. That Grandma knows how talkative her granddaughter is and I would imagine they’ve talked to her about safety things when it comes to others. It’s a good thing she felt comfortable talking to you and that you talked back to her; if any judgement was to be had in this scenario it would’ve been if you had just walked on by and ignored her, you know? 😂 Kids need to know that they can ask adults for help if they need it but that if an adult needed help then they would ask another adult and not a kid like them. You know sustainability is important to you and you do what you can but I can assure you that people getting upset about straws might not have the biggest worldview and certainly not the biggest grasp of the issue at hand. You’re aware of the issues regarding waste and you do what you can - that’s certainly more than most. Know yourself, know your worth - and remind yourself of it. You’re always doing the best you can. 🤙🏽
The whole older people / adults shouldn’t talk to kids is stupid imo, as someone with alcoholic unpredictable parents there were some safe havens of adults out there for me. Shout out local librarian Marsha. Shout out to the queercoded art teacher who picked me up from the highway as I walked 10km to school when my ma was asleep. Like what happened to the whole “it takes a village” thing??
yes american consumption is concerning and a problem, but the fact that so many tonnes of clothes that get thrown in landfills with the price tags still on them proves that supply is no longer tied to demand or consumption, there is no amount of boycotting meat or fast fashion that will convince companies to not over-produce in hopes that they can make infinitely increasing profits
respectfully i have been a huge sarah fan since the vine days, i loved VCG and i like this podcast. but i feel like as time goes on i can’t explain it but how sarah explains things is just intimidating/matter of fact. they are very abrasive and since they started reading a lot of books at a short time it has made me feel weird because who has the time to read so many books. i love both of them but im just not feeling this podcast anymore which sucks
I love Sarah’s insight. It’s the kind of things you’d find in a “dummies guide for ….” What ever topic they’re discussing
yes! a lot of books in the topics that sarah reads can be filled with academic language and emotionally heavy, it’s really nice to hear them reiterated for a larger audience by someone who fully read and understands the content
She’s so knowledgeable!
It’s the adhd hyperfixations lmao it’s so relatable

We're in the same boat, grab an oar (I haven't touched them)

forever love the way sarah’s mind works ❤
As a proud NA member I definitely would buy “please don’t do crack in the bathroom” for our meetings 😅
Also, Kendahl you are such a badass for living in NYC with OCD, I literally could never. The thought of living in NYC makes my OCD brain hyperventilate. Idk if you think of that as a big accomplishment or a big deal, but I think so 😊

Oh boy, that sounds rough. Is it published? Can I buy it online?
Sarah I'd love to hear more about the books you're reading! Please do recommend them in the podcasts!

Nothing grinds my gears more than people using OCD as an adjective and saying “I’m so OCD about ___”
for kendahl being stressed about reusable straws id reccomend glass ones because theyre the only ones i can use because you can literally see if theres anything in it
crying laughing at kendahl having lived in nyc and thinking the hamptons is upstate
I hope Jordan's foot gets fixed soon ❤
I could listen to a podcast of them just talking about what they’ve been up to/reading. They’re both so insightful ❤
We need a book club!
Sarah? Do you have a goodreads account?? I would love to keep up with what she's reading I need non fiction recs!!!
I’ve been thinking that every episode! Then we can all follow each other! 😂

Looking forward to another episode of my favorite podcast. You two never disappoint
You guys are so on point with your discussions i absolutely love it. Thank you !!!
I loved this ep!! Definitely gonna read the books Sarah recommended, they sound so insightful

Lmao I love how you talked about getting a library card like it’s a mj card😂
as someone with OCD i feel her
Anyone w OCD(any type) I went to rogers behavioral health for my OCD. It was life changing so if you want treatment I did the virtual program.
I went there too! They have a good program for OCD.
Interesting! Thanks for sharing. Definitely going to screenshot to look into later!
Would you mind sharing what book on OCD you’re reading? I have a friend I want to understand better.
it’s kind of disturbing how many times i’ve seen every episode of this podcast- which i discovered like a month ago
13:10 my mum worked at a school with like 50 kids and she got one a birthday present and because of that she got called into a meeting under suspicion of grooming
sarah start a book club !!!
i hope i can join the class revolution with you guys
did they ever explain why they dont do character skits at the end of the episodes anymore?? i kinda miss them 🧍♀️

OCD club 🙋🏼♀️
I think Kendahl just made me realize I have OCD 😟
When you guys were trying to remember Elon Musks kids name 😂

i think its actually just sarah feeling comfortable enough to not have to make themselves "pallatable" which is a big thing when unmasking
This just comes across as you’re insecure you don’t read
Looking forward to another episode of my favorite podcast. You two never disappoint
